Got my first kit in 1990. 5x14" Pearl Export steel snare. Still have it, just finished a refurbishment project on it like a week ago! Chrome was all pitted to hell.. Cleaned it up and painted it, replaced the throw off and butt plate.. just need to get some heads and snare wires for it now!

First snare: got it in 1964 a Ludwig supra.Rented it for band lessons at school. If you wanted to purchase the drum the price was $100.00. When I found out I could buy a 3 piece Kent drum set with a Turkish type cymbal from Sears and robuck for the same money we took the snare back and got my silver sparkle beautiful Kent drum set.The snare was know prize but I had a set of drums with a stack of 45 records and that's how I learned to play. Those were the days,2 other kids on my block had drum kits as well.Over the years all 3 of us learned how to play and all got into bands. What a great way to grow up.!!!

I still have my first snare drum that I received in 1979. It’s a 1969 (I believe) Slingerland with a Niles badge and a ribbed aluminum shell. It came with a fiber case, snare stand and folding music stand. Sounds great! It’s the drum that established my fondness for metal shell snare drums.

My first snare was a Taye snare that matched the kit, it was an beginner level snare, didn't really know how to tune that well and never got a good sound out of it. When I ended up getting a pearl vision kit years after that came with a Sensitone, learned how to tune, and it actually got me through a LOT of gigging. For a snare that just comes with most beginner/intermediate kits, it actually was pretty good!

I once had a $35 vintage made in Japan "Decca" 8 lug , Philippine mahogany 5x14 snare drum. I put a Remo fiberskyn ambassador on the batter side, and after I tuned it up, I used it for a recording session. After the recording was mixed, you'd swear it was a vintage slingerland or Gretsch. It was a thin 3 ply shell with re-rings. I later sold it to a a teen who was starting out. Just goes to show that some of those made in Japan vintage drums can sound great if the bearing edges are decent, and when they're fitted with brand new pro drum heads, they can sound really good.
    Great video as always. 👍

Your student is lucky to have such an insightful teacher!! I'd love to see you do something with making a cheap drum set sound good- a video where you just tune the stock heads, a video where you add some dampening from household items (tape and other stuff for muffling), and a video where you swap out the heads completely and show how versatile an entry level kit can be with a good set of heads.

Happy New Snare Day, Rose! Really cool drum, it’s sounding great. And of course you’ve got the best teacher a new drummer could ask for... Keep up the good work!
My first snare drum was a b/o Acro, before they were hip. Cost about $100. and sounded really good. I don’t have it anymore, but I still consider it a great drum. It’s also a good fit for a new drummer because it’s easy to get it sounding good, which inspires confidence.

My first snare was a stock Pearl Forum drum. I couldn't make it sound right to save my life. I only learned how to look for tuning and sound a couple of years ago, after years of different tuning methods and schemes. Right now my go to is a Starphonic Aluminum with Evans hydraulic heads (thanks to your video!). A massive sound.

  • @yelltempus

As always "GREAT STUFF, DUDES!" Surprised you didn't swap out the bottom head as well. Makes a huge difference. BTW, 13" snares are amazing drums that are actually hard to make sound bad. Something about that diameter of a 13" shell just works so well for snare drums.

I borrowed my very first drum from my teacher, it was a czechoslovakian Amati snare. I think it was 14x5 or 14x4.
And the first snare drum I've ever bought was a $80 Phil Pro. It used to have six lugs and a built-in dampfer, which (combined with a decent head) could make it sound appropriate for performing live, but I've never managed to tune it properly.

My first snare was an 80s Premier 1005 steel snare. Replaced the original (bended) 1.8 mm "clangy" hoops with some 2.3 mm, saved the original premier snare wires and replaced them with puresounds. All that and proper heads and it sounds killer. I also own a Starphonic brass, but I keep coming back to the Premier every other week. Both amazing, each in their own way.

If the implicit point of the video is how drummer should learn to get the most of what they have, that they should be ready to improvise in any situation and that the gear you own ultimately does not matter, then I totally agree 😊 Maybe it's a little far-fetched, but it's still good advice! 😂👍

solely when it came to changing the batter head, I actually preferred the higher David Garibaldi sound (it actually surprised me how similar it sounded to his snare) to the ringy-er, lower pitched tuning. That said, I'm not normally a snare-higher-than-the-clouds kinda guy, and I tune mine pretty medium with a bit of muffling.

with every adjustment it sounded more like... oh it sounds like a drum. NOW I GET IT.
going along with this, i'd love to see a "cheap" snare, optimizing from top to bottom. finding the heads it wants. finding the tuning it likes. really getting the ABSOLUTE most out of a budget drum, rather than "making a budget drum downright usable".

I love the "pop" the the HD Dry (double ply) gives me but often wish the head was a little more sensitive. I have fitted a Genera Dry but feel this wont last as long. I feel the G12 with holes in would be perfect bu5 alas this is not made by Evans . Have you ever experimented with making your own holes?
