- A common misconception is that Islam is relatively new in Africa, however, if we take a closer look, we can see that Africans are amongst the first non-Arabs to embrace Islam.
It is a sad tragedy that people think that people from Africa are new converts or they don't know Islam. In reality, the Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) sent his companions to Africa before sending them anywhere else.

Somali empire in the medieval times that dominated the Indian ocean trade. They belonged to the Somali Muslim sultanate [3][4][5] that ruled over large parts of the Horn of Africa in the Middle Ages. Through a strong centralized administration and an aggressive military stance towards invaders, the Ajuran Sultanate successfully resisted an Oromo invasion from the west and a Portuguese incursion from the east during the Gaal Madow and the Ajuran-Portuguese wars. Trading routes dating from the ancient and early medieval periods of Somali maritime enterprise were strengthened or re-established, and foreign trade and commerce in the coastal provinces flourished with ships sailing to and coming from many kingdoms and empires in East Asia, South Asia, Europe, the Near East, North Africa and East Africa.[6]
The sultanate left an extensive architectural legacy, being one of the major medieval Somali powers engaged in castle and fortress building. Many of the ruined fortifications dotting the landscapes of southern Somalia today are attributed to the Ajuran Sultanate's engineers,[7] including a number of the pillar tomb fields, necropolises and ruined cities built in that era. During the Ajuran period, many regions and people in the southern part of the Horn of Africa converted to Islam because of the theocratic nature of the government.[8] The royal family, the House of Garen, expanded its territories and established its hegemonic rule through a skillful combination of warfare, trade linkages and alliances.[9]
As an hydraulic empire, the Ajuran monopolized the water resources of the Shebelle and Jubba rivers. Through hydraulic engineering, it also constructed many of the limestone wells and cisterns of the state that are still operative and in use today. The rulers developed new systems for agriculture and taxation, which continued to be used in parts of the Horn of Africa as late as the 19th century.[1] The tyrannical rule of the later Ajuran rulers caused multiple rebellions to break out in the sultanate, and at the end of the 17th century, the Ajuran state disintegrated into several successor kingdoms and states, the most prominent being the Geledi Sultanate.[10]

JZK! This is astonishing SubhanAllah! I never knew most people thought this way. Yes, there were people who were surprised that there are Muslims in my home country (Ethiopia) which left me baffled. Specially, since Islam is the second largest religion there. So many African countries have deep roots of Islam and it’s sad to think that all/most Africans are reverts. It matters to know that’s far from the truth b/c as our brother said it’s our history and shows the lack of knowledge. And I am sure anyone who knows about the great sahaba and first Mu’adhin Bilal Ibn Rabah (RA) as well as the first Hijra would at least know the ancient roots of Islam in Africa.

Nabi Nuh (AS) or Noah, was an African and during his time the Arabian Peninsula was attached to the continent of Africa. The Red Sea did not exist at the time, there were two or three fresh water lakes there. Later the sea wall at Bab-el-Mandeb broke and the sea water rushed in to form the Red Sea. Adam (AS) was brought to earth in the region of Mecca, and at that time the whole Hijaz and the Arabian Peninsula was part of Africa. Also, the Arabian Peninsula was lush green, and with a number of rivers.

The first slave traders were black people selling other blacks to the Arabs.

There is a need to undertake a project to translate all the scripts of west African/sub Saharan Muslims. I once heard the library of Timbuktu has more scripts, books, texts etc than Oxford and Cambridge united. So much knowledge already forgotten we shouldn’t let the rest get lost
