Distraction-free editor and IBM Model M keyboard. This man is not behind. He is so much ahead we can't recognize it yet.
so Forrest Gump was written on a Model M???
Seems like a salt of the earth kind of guy. Down to earth, genuine, no bull. I come back here regularly.
Top 5 screenwriters of all time.
I just watched The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Thank you. Such a tender story.
It's something a lot of us, command line users, are familiar with.
That's why Linux is so popular. No fancy UI, no distractions.
It's a matter of "getting to the point". Loved it. :)
I can see this guy use vim or emacs.
Absolutely love this one, I think Roth's technique and process may be the best that I have seen so far.
Three books a week is absolutely insane, I don´t get how people can read so fast. Yes there is skimming or skipping, but those techniques don´t park anything in my long-term memory.
LOVE how he chooses to stick with what works for him 😊
You can print to file, create a virtual LPT port to print into a flat text file. Done it before to extract data from old MS-DOS POS systems.
This video will be my anti-procrastination anti-indiscipline *pill.* Daily, maybe.
Thank you for Forrest Gump!
"I use MS DOS over Windows XP because it's unhackable"
Meawhile the hackers: "We will see about that"
Seriously, he had better not have that thing connected to the Internet. There are ransomware bots roving the net day and night looking for those extremely vulnerable and unpatched Windows XP machines to infect and extort. God help us all if Dune Part 2 is stored in there 😳
@@MikeTrieu It looks like he uses two different computers (or dual boots, but I'd doubt that). You can see Windows 7 at 1:06
edit: at 0:51 you can see two computers. One next to him on the left, and another on the right. Guessing he has a KVM switch setup and does not have the XP machine connected to the net.
He has no internet access on that computer, so good luck for that :)
SO GOOD! Man, I love his writing. Thank you for the video.
A real IBM buckling-spring keyboard. That's what I'm using as I type this.
Huge fan of them as well. I have restored some and use daily ad work and home. Nothing better keyboard wise for me. I'm happy.
"The truth is if I was to really analyze myself, I'm probably a frustrated novelist. But never really had the guts to write a novel." Ouch.
I wish Eric Roth good luck on turning Frank Herbert's DUNE into a film-able opus, maybe two or three films... give or take; With Denis Villeneuve and Brian Herbert, I really think he will get it right.
This comment aged well.
And he did.
He smashed it
I'm definitely saddened that he didn't return for Dune part 2, but I have no doubt that Denis and Jon will succeed artistically with Mr. Roth's blessing.
Baeutiful and honest documentary.
MOST INTERESTING PART(for me)---> When he bought the picture and the ASTRONAUT died the next day.... If that didn't get your attention I really don't know...
this dude is going to write the new movie adaption for DUNE
and it turned out fucking amazing
I'm at the moment where this comment was 4 years ago and the first comment in this comment was 4 hours ago, I was hoping to wait as 4th to comment but who cares?

Inspirational!
Six scripts nominated for best picture. Was good friends with Jim Morrison in film school. Got completely ripped off by Bernie Madoff!
Have to admit, his name never really hit my radar until learning just now that he will be penning the script for Denis Villeneuve's Dune. Well that's two home runs from Legendary and that can't be all bad, at all. :)
it wasn't
@@cldpt it wasn’t what
I love the figures on the book-shelf (3:55) , where can I buy it?
I can't believe he still uses a DOS program.
I really wish I could find that software.
'finally know who you are, well, you know, as a Writer (: Thank s for posting this Eric.
Best episode! #IMHO
Gold.
Please someone help me to find that software. "Movie Master" which is Eric Roth using.
I've looked and couldn't find it, however I'm happy running WordPerfect 5.1 on FreeDOS, which is great for distraction free writing.
Beautiful. The wallet given to the actor, wow.
there is no need to rush upgrading to windows11 i see.
DOS!!!!
I enjoyed this one.
Please can you make a Creative Spark Video with Woody Allen?
Why? What has Woody done that was good in the last 30 years?
@@Nautilus1972 Magic in the Moonlight, Match Point, Midnight in Paris, Cafe Society, Irrational Man, A Rainy Day in New York, Blue Jasmine, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Cassandra's Dream, Deconstructing Harry, Everyone Says I Love You, Bullets Over Broadway, Manhattan Murder Mystery, and Husbands and Wives for starters.
Just unplug the network card, and that's that, a computer not connected to the internet, no need to do so on an old computer, if it's not connected to the internet in any way and it has no wireless module then its physically imposible for it to connect, then add a printer that works by cable with no wireless connections and done, air tight.
I'm trying to sell old computers myself in fact... and no one wants them 😅
Someone tell him that he can increase program memory limits on windows xp, then his DOS text editor won't run out of memory
He was friends with The Door's Jim Morrison? Is that true? Anyone? Sounds like a smart, really down to Earth guy.
An IBM Model M !!!!!!
Es Como usar una máquina de escribir además le de vida a una pc por más tiempo buena idea encima gana dinero con eso genial
🐐
"Religion and the Decline of Magic"
Damn, where the hell would you even get Movie Master these days?
He likes his ellipses....
Who doesn’t love a good ellipse? 😜
What writing program is here using?
1:30
I only do 2 to 4 hours a day. Usually 2 to 3.
real men use an ibm model m
Please, I want your honest opinion people: did you really like the script of the new Dune? Cause in all fairness, I am sorry to say that I did not
да всем пофиг.
Such a shame that the Dune's script ended up being so horrible
All I see is another Boomer unwilling to change with the times.
Then you must be blind, lady.
