Maybe the alt was indeed bad. But the behavior you describe in the beginning is normal on these trucks. These were the first of the "smart" charging systems that fluctuate voltage as the PCM deems necessary rather than holding a constant voltage like old school stuff. As long as it's not actually discharging, which it doesn't sound like it was, all normal
My alternator went 4 years ago. I was 657 miles from home. Luckily, I had tools in my trumk enough juice to go to AutoZone. Put in the new alternator in the parking lot. I was on my way. Their alot easier on Lincoln town cars and all other Panther platform vehicles. Thumbs up 👍🏻 on this. And have a happy 4th.
Let's hope and pray that alternator going wonky hasn't caused a domino effect of electrical chaos in other parts of that Suburban...such as the water pump, the spark plugs, the power steering, and the fuel pump! 🙏🙏
Tip I use to push those collars back out, use a mini c clamp, works great if you’re struggling to smack it out and are worried about snapping the ear off
Nice one of the things that is still relatively simple to repair! BTW WELCOME to the Suburban Tribe! I have owned 6 over the years. Currently have 99 5.7 2wd. 07 3/4 ton 4x4 6.0(keeper) and 16 GMC Yukon xl Denali. Still evaluating the Yukon!
Happy 4th of July, Rich. (Ya dirty rebel)...LOL Seriously though, nice to see an easy alternator fix. Ray had one a little while ago where he almost had to remove the engine in order to get it replaced. INSANE.
Good easy job. One tip, if I may...the main engine harness running up the driver's side runs over the top of a coil mounting stud. I've seen those studs wear into the harness and short out wires in that large wire bundle. The last one I had was towed in to me for a no-crank no-start and had a blown fuse for the starter. Took me a bit to find but that stud had rubbed through. There is supposed to be a plastic cap on that stud to prevent it from rubbing through the harness. It looked like that plastic cap is missing on yours, Rich.
Only have had two problems with my 09 Yukon. Both electrical and good shops had changed sensors and more to 6he tune of $1200 w/no joy. Turned out to be a sluggish starter and a faulty alternator. Local starter/alternator shop rebuilt both. Total bill about $150 kept my oem units and all is well in the world. Local gmc dealer wanted to change all of that plus replace an already new premium battery for $2100.
Happy 4th Boss! My compressor on my F150 went out so I bought the non A/C belt to bypass it. Because I have the old school design fan and shroud, I scraped my left arm pretty good trying to reach the tensioner. Newer vehicles like yours use electric fans so you have all sorts of room to do front engine repairs. I love my truck, but I gotta figure out a better way to access the tensioner. Maybe I’ll get a longer breaker bar instead of using my ratchet. Stay Blessed!
Happy 4th Rich I pull my alternator after I call the auto parts store to make sure they have it and and saves me a trip and also I can verify that they are giving me the correct one
I have a 2013 Tahoe and a 2013 Suburban both with the 5.3. It is normal for the voltage on these models to drop to about battery voltage for periods of time and both my trucks do this. There is a TSB covering this. TSB 07-06-03-009B
@@FordBossMeMy experience is that you may have to drive for an hour or so maybe more until it will with light electrical load. As I understand the TSB this is done to save fuel by unloading the alternator completely when possible. I could shoot you a copy if you tell me how.
I have the same problem but only when it’s hot like 90 plus outside and I put the AC on. The engine fan goes on high speed. Maybe the AC compressor is going out on mine. The vehicle bogs down a bit when voltage is lower but never shuts off or any warning lights
I know you aint talking bout oil filters in this vid but just a piece of info for people...i know fram filters are crap but i needed 1 in a pinch so i grabbed the Fram "Endurance" 20k filter from wally world it was the canister style i just done oil change at 7500 miles and when i pulled it out the media was torn and was like wet cardboard you could rub it with your fingers and the filter media would pull apart into fibers and it says its suppose to be a full synthetic media ??? and last for 20k which i wouldnt leave a filter in that long anyway but this filter is pure JUNK it was used with vavoline extended protection 5w20...will be sticking with my Purolator One from now on even if i have to wait couple days for it to come in.
Hey brother Happy 4th to you and your family. I wanted to ask you if you know anything about how to or where I could send my BCM to be repaired. it is a 2012 ford raptor, and I can not reset it. Started when I replaced the back lights with OEM . Keep getting a ground fault reading. Any thoughts
Take to a Ford Dealer and hook up to their system. Also ForScan may help. BCM (body control module) may need Ford Service reprogramming to get communication channels back. Doubtful it is a bad BCM. Go over each wire and look for insulation rubbing into metal causing a short.
I have an oil question for you, Ford boss. I just bought a new F150 with 2.7 and because it has a belt drive oil pump. Is there a certain oil I should use?
I swear there is a program in the computer on these chevy’s that just stars frying or making things break at set mileages ! Next will be the tranny , then starter , then evaporate canister , then the cluster , I’m I making sense !
Buying a used vehicle = Buying someone else's problems. -expect to spend some $$$ $,$$$ fixing a few things. -good reason to buy used and/or certified used with warranty from a good dealer.
Happy 4th of July everyone !!!
Glad you got it replaced without a catastrophic failure away from home!
Alternators always go out when you are about 100 miles from home don't they?
Happy 4th of July Rich! One of the advantages of GM trucks is the ease of access to the engine. This makes frequent repairs easier.
-replace that alternator. If the alternator output is off (not consistent) it will mess up everything. - cheap fix.

Beautiful fix. Electronics are subject to heat fatigue. Go thru it every year on my 1997 Toyota
Has to be one of the easiest, if not the easiest alternator replacements. Happy 4th of July!
Nice Rich. Hope you are well Brother.
Good morning Ford Boss. Great job and great socket wrench set.
I hope everyone has a happy 4th of July.
Hello from Las Vegas.
How hot is the sin city

Nice on the 5.3 the alt is right on top easy to get to.
Happy July 4 brother. Have a blessed day and stay safe. 💪💪🇺🇸🇺🇸🙏✝️

Get a 1983 etc GMC with the 6.2L diesel and Banks Turbo. (Must get the turbo though and Banks still makes them. Better than the 6.5L turbo.
Happy 4th brother. Thanks for your service
Hey HAPPY 4th of July Rich,, thanks for serving!! Well look on the bright side you are getting it all fixed up and you know how to do it.. FROM TOM..
HAPPY FORTY. It's raining where I live. Hopefully you don't get rain too. Nice vehicle 🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉
Get a repair kit new bearings, brushes, voltage regulator like mechanics use to do.
Happy Independence Day Rich! Excellent video as always!

Rebuilt both with new parts for $150 to cover the labor plus the parts? Didn't happen. 25 years ago? Sure.
Yep, last year. I took the starter out and brought it to the shop. The alt needed a new
regulator and r&r..
@@michaelmclester5133 I'm sure you did. But you paid more than 150 bucks.
Ima test the alternator on my Toyota seems to be running weak. TYVM for video.
New Subscriber here!! Love this channel.
Thank you brother

Use mechanics gloves and a long shirt or the mechanics sleeves (go on your forearm like a sock)
Happy 4th Rich
I pull my alternator after I call the auto parts store to make sure they have it and and saves me a trip and also I can verify that they are giving me the correct one
-they can also test your new alternator at the parts store. (Some are bad)
Algo 👊 bump.
Happy 4th Rich
all the best. MM
Great video!!!!
At least it was an easy replacement. It doesn't get much better than that.
Happy Independence Day, Ford Boss. 🙂
Happy 4th Rich, any update on vavoline protect&restore?
I ran the first batch now running the 2nd

With the new alternator it didn't do it 1 single time
Share with me the tsb

With the noise you mention, you may have had a bad unit.
I believe Tow/Haul bypasses that system. Put it in Tow/Haul and see if the voltage comes up. Or just turn on the headlights.

When you get the chance look up”it’s probably the alternator” on UA-cam

If your looking for a job as a mechanic...Buy a GM product ..it's not just a job it's a career....
For anything after the GMT 800 platform, truer words have never been spoken.
I have a 2009 Silverado I bought last years as a spare/work truck. I put a LOT of parts on that one.
That can be said for ANY make.
I've only owned one and it did not like me.
😮
I have a 2001 toyota with 200k, same alternator. Tested and running good. Should I change the alternator for preventive maintenance?
Ehhh idk honestly
Happy Independence Day.
It’s gonna do the same thing again. Nothing wrong.
I swear there is a program in the computer on these chevy’s that just stars frying or making things break at set mileages ! Next will be the tranny , then starter , then evaporate canister , then the cluster , I’m I making sense !
Have you heard of "alternator death" before?
happy fourth of july neighbours. 🇨🇦🇺🇸🎉🥳🍾

Voltage drop test that ground cable! I'm a gm tech and replace them almost daily
What about voltage drop after turning on AC?
That’s normal on those vehicles
