Thanks for the reaction. This was just an introduction of Rhapsody. String instruments are real as well as the baroque recorder and Baroque oboe. Other wind instruments were keyboards. The keyboardist is also the pianist. They recorded a few songs that are completely in Italian. I will request them during regular requests. They are ballads.
It was a pleasure and great discovery Narvik. Cant wait to do your other requests. Interesting that the Strings are in fact real Instruments. I hope the band receives the love it deserves!
The sounds are mainly Italian Baroque and Renaissance. The classical guest musicians were experienced musicians who play Baroque. When you check the list of guest musicians below, you see that most musicians are from Germany or have at least German names. They couldn't find Musicians from their own country, Italy, except relatives of members of the band.
Between all the longest RHAPSODY songs, this is may favourite number 1: In February RHAPSODY (Turilli, guitar and Lione, singer) played this song... It was absolutely epic! And one detail is the off-voice: In the concert the voice saying "Go Mighty Warrior..." was deeper and added even more epicity to the song!! This band recorded songs with the legendary Chistopher Lee (RIP).
Lots of people discovering this with you. I bought this album I think in 1998... I was a lot into power metal at the time... This was the second album by Rhapsody (at the time they were not Rhapsody OF FIRE). And the album that made them more known in the scene. And it came very close to the 2nd album by Nightwish, Oceanborn, which was also Nightwish's "big" hit. Which I also got at the time. Gamma Ray, Stratovarius, Hammerfall... I was getting every album of those bands at that time.
I had the exactly same path. I'm Brazilian, if you're from other country, it's very interesting to see how the power metal reached different places with the same bands and albuns in the 90's. I was totally addicted to Rhapsody, even learnt English by myself, just to read the history told in the booklet of these albuns! And i was really into Nightwish aswell, started buying Oceanborn, love it, found Angels Falls First, love it too, and then started to buy all their records. The steam fainted for me though, after Rhapsody's Power of the Dragon Flame (I can't stand to listen to Symphony Part 2) and Nightwish's Once (same for Dark Passion Play, though, I like Dark Passion better than Symphony 2, at least, I like 2 or 3 songs in Dark Passion, and none in Symphony 2).

Hi Nick ! Never heard of this group. Nice opening then ... An Itailian Ronnie James Dio ? That's my very first impression of vocals. Definitely symphonic. Yes it has that Game Of Thrones vibe but then it did begins saying goodbye to a Dragon....The change was then very much on par with Richie Blackmore incarnation group " Blackmore's Night" which is heavily influenced by medieval themes . [ He & his wife Candice, live in a medieval castle ] Boy this vocalist has definitely got that Dio vocal range ! ... enter some Renaissance vocals ... Great changes. Dramatic stuff ! That was good Nick thankyou ! Byee ! Jim X
Fabio Lione is little bit more towards Eric Adams, very dark tenor, can pass as a baritone at will. Fantastic band. Go through the old stuff and into the new Luca Turilli and Turilli/ Lione Rhapsody, wich is more metal fusion than typical prog. ua-cam.com/video/1-DlF1H9Vro/v-deo.html Also check out Angra, a slightly earlier band that started this second wave power metal. 🤘
Wow! Another one I need to check out. Definitely some Celtic influences here. Symphonic Metal? By mixing all three things...it kind of fits the Prog classification. I'm gonna dive down the WIKI Rabbit Hole on this band! Thanks Nick and Kai again!👍
Nick, what a discovery! This was easily the best thing I've heard you play beside Allan Holdsworth on your show--just fantastic. This piece was a world unto itself very much like entering into the Lord of the Rings with wonderful ever changing complexity, a variable buffet of musical side trips while retaining cohesive as a whole. Inspiring.....
There's more... Just for starters, all the albums end with an extravaganza like this one, there are shorter, punchier songs, a few ballads. Also all the members except one are now in a metal fusion band that mixes power metal, classical, electronica and world music called Turilli/ Lione Rhapsody.
Let me tell you something about the lyrics. They tell a fantasy story in style of Lord of the Rings. It is completely fantasy. Altogether, the story is called LEGENDARY TALES. The story begins with THE EMERALD SWORD SAGA. This story is a series which spans over 5 studio albums. The albums LEGENDARY TALES 1997, SYMPHONY OF THE ENCHANTED LANDS 1998, DAWN OF VICTORY 2000, RAIN OF A THOUSAND FLAMES 2001, and POWER OF THE DRAGONFLAME 2002 are covering THE EMERALD SWORD SAGA. The final song of POWER OF THE DRAGONFLAME is the grand finale or conclusion of the EMERALD SWORD SAGA. It is a 19 minute song. SYMPHONY OF THE ENCHANTED LANDS II starts the new sequel of the EMERALD SWORD SAGA which is called THE DARK SECRET SAGA. It is a mixture of music and "Hoerspiel". THE DARK SECRET SAGA spans over the next 5 albums: SYMPHONY OF THE ENCHANTED LANDS II 2004, TRIUMPH OR AGONY 2006, THE FROZEN TEARS OF ANGELS 2010, THE COLD EMBRACE OF FEAR 2010, and FROM CHAOS TO ETERNITY 2011. They started a new saga with the album THE EIGHTH MOUNTAIN. The current saga is called THE NEPHILIM'S EMPIRE SAGA. Right now, they released THE EIGTH MOUNTAIN 2019 and GLORY OF SALVATION 2021 which cover the new saga. In order to grasp the lyrics you need to listen to the albums from beginning to the end in chronological order.
Thank you Narvik for the explanation. I will definitely get into the lyrics as I loved this. I did show the entire video to Alexia on the couch and she loved it. She did say she would have had a hard time doing it on camera because It did take me 28 min to get trough it all.
Each of the sagas ends with a grand finale song. They are my favorites by them. They aren’t too heavy. The EMERALD SWORD SAGA ends with the track: GARGOYLES, ANGELS OF DARKNESS off their album POWER OF THE DRAGONFLAME 2002. The DARKS SECRET SAGA ends with the song HEROES OF THE WATERFALL KINGDOM off their album FROM CHAOS TO ETERNITY 2011. Each song is almost 20 minutes long.
Hi again, Ok a recomendation but not music. For Lex but of course you will love it too Nick.... The tv series "Firefly" mixing Sci-fi with Western gunslinger themes but it's the gripping storyline of who is the strange girl [ Summer Glau ] . It's a series where you literally care deeply about the characters and then follow that with the movie " Serenity" that answers all the questions the series left us. An incredible movie but you need "Firefly" first. There was only ever one series, but it is soooo good. Byee [ again ] Jim X [ Maybe get the dvd's ...I've watched so many times I've lost count ? ]

Rhapsody is amazing until Power of the Dragon Flame. From Symphony of Enchanted Lands Part 2 onwards, they lost totally their quality, with the only slightly reediming albuns being The Frozen Tears of Angels and Dark Wings of Steel. But the first 4 albuns, absolutely Power Metal classics. This song you're reacting for, it's the usual long epic last song that they used to have in their abuns, and it's simply perfect.

Rhapsody is Symphonic Power Metal. It's closer to Helloween and Angra. Comes from the line of Iron Maiden and Manowar. Nightwish, though it is metal, has a lot more Goth influence. New stuff in this line is Unleash the Archers and Battle Beast. Glasya is a mix of Rhapsody and Tarja era Nightwish. Want any links, just ask! 😉🤘
I would say, kind of. There is a pretty big difference between them, and I think the symphonic metal genre (bands like Epica) was derived more from the Nightwish style. Rhapsody went more in with the symphonic/neoclassical side. I'm not really sure what modern bands I would compare it with.
That's how I have known of them; "Powermetal" (or Symphonic Powermetal, with Neo-classical/Prog Metal elements). I feel bad that I sold my "Lp" copy of this album that was still sealed, but at the time I was VERY picky with Powermetal bands. I need to hear more of the original band, and "Luca Turilli's Rhapsody" & "Rhapsody of Fire". You would probably love the German (early) Powermetal band *Blind Guardian,* whom most of the lyrics are Fantasy based, but also tackle Lord of the Rings Lore. And Hansi Kürsch, is a phenomenal vocalist! Giving some time to pass, before I request some more Extreme Metal bands that I follow(ed) that I hope others can get into, but I don't want to offend anyone trying to get their own requests in. Also some technical Thrash bands that were progressing more at the time, than Prog Metal was, when it was just getting on its feet (and more contemporary Tech-Thrash/U.S. Powermetal bands). . . . . but I hope you get to hear *Nevermore* at some point, awesome singing and solid musicianship throughout, and HEAVY, a bit progressive and aggressive with more topical lyrics. - I really enjoyed the Rhapsody track, thanks Nick & Kai! \m/ *Movie suggestions:* I'm a bit surprised that Lexi didn't like Sci-fi/Fantasy and Medieval/Historical films! 😮Though I know she likes Drama, Indie Films and quirky Comedies. How does she feel about the genres now? If you haven't seen these, I HIGHLY suggest; John Boorman's "Excalibur", Ridley Scott's "Kingdom of Heaven" (see the movie cut, then the Directors cut!), "Robin Hood", and his Fantasy film "Legend" (but watch both the Directors Cut and "U.S." Cut). And here is a quirky Sci-Fi; Jean-Pierre Jeunet's "City of Lost Children". - Breakout the popcorn and have fun!
I can't recommend the Luca Turilli's Rhapsody and Turilli/Lione albums highly enough, listen to them again and again. It's fantastic music, as good in it's way as anything the old Rhapsody did, but it's different and has to be taken on it's own mindset. It's power metal based but it's a crossover project through and through. It's a journey. You've gotta want to go there. 🤘🎶🎶
