What a luxury - being able to test ride a variety of trikes before buying! Mine is a 2001 Greenspeed GTO - test rode it and came back the next day to purchase it - no buyers remorse whatsoever. Stay informed and give yourself at least a day to think about these big purchases.

Realistically, if you want a true comparison, ride the Dumont and then ride a Catrike 559. Almost identical minus suspension.
After that try the 559 with balloon tires like big apple or big ben tires. Lower the psi on them and now you have sudo suspension.
That could make all the difference and at a lower cost.
Most importantly, get professionally fitted. Makes a ton of difference in the ride, especially over time spent on the trike.
First rule of thumb... throw out brand. Throw out cost, and throw out looks.
Go for what feels comfortable. If it’s comfortable, then it the right trike.

Trike shops always have extra wide 36" doorways to get the trike in and out. Homes and Apartments only have 32.5" passthru doorways. And most trikes are about 33" wide. The Pocket and the 700 catrike are narrow and fit without struggling.
    Take width into consideration.
Pick yourself up some Shimano SPD clipless pedals. That will keep your feet on the pedals if you hit a pothole hard. (and you will) you don't want your feet falling and getting drug under the trike...! It hurts..!

The Catrike Dumont is an excellent choice, the Scorpion Plus has a higher riding posture and wider front wheels. The ICE Adventure is a sure winner too. For very heavy riders, the Greenspeed Magnum XL is the solution because it holds riders up to 450 lbs. Not your situation though.

My wife and I are in our 60's with quite bad backs. She has a Villager and I have the Catrike Eola. We cannot ride bicycles due to our back problems. We ride almost daily over 20 miles. We love our Catrikes. One caution though, always use pedal clips. It's very easy to run over your foot.

Don't make a decision until you've tried the ICE Adventurer (full suspension) with Shimano E-assist and also the TRIOT made in Utah. I absolutely love my ICE HD Adventure. The boon is adjustable.

Glad you found an HP Velo Scorpion fs26. Another great option with it (at least a few years ago) is the Sram dual drive /24 gear. The internal hub lets you shift the “front” gearing even when you are stopped. Great to pull off the road in a hurry and then start up in first gearwithout moving. Mine has been very smooth and dependable. At the time it was one of two standard gearing options so no added $.

I can confirm your findings and got myself a fs 26. I am 6'5" and 260 lbs, and my decision criteria were 1. foldable frame 2. 26" rear wheel for a smoother ride, 3. a long wheelbase for directional stability 4. Shimano dual drive, so I can shift when stopped and do not have the mess with shifting between front cog wheels. Also I like the coupled hydraulic brakes. It is a fun vehicle, indeed.

  • @StellarFella
    @StellarFella 5 років тому +5

The situation with being 5' 2" is not insurmountable at all. If you get on a trike with a chain gobbler, you have flexibility with moving the boom in and out without having to add or subtract links in the chain. Don't be left out of the picture!. Find out the trike you feel most comfortable sitting in, commit, and have them cut the boom off for you. Simple solution!

I have a Catrike 700 and have owned since 2014. I was quickly up to riding 26 miles every Saturday and Sunday in a park on a 1.2 mile loop. After a multi year break from riding, during the lock down, I started riding it inside and now ride 30 minutes twice a day using a sport crafters roller in my living room.
A great way in 90 Degree heat to get toned and cardio in air conditioned comfort.

ICE Trikes also do a bracket that moves the seat forward 2" for people of a shorter stature. Most of their trikes range from around 5' 4"- 6' 5" as standard.
They also offer suspension an all bar the VTX.
You can also spec for shorter cranks.
One thing I would advise is use either SPD type pedals or toe clip & strap. If your foot slips off the pedal when moving it WILL get stuck under the frame (slow= very painfull fast= Hospital)!!!
Check out some videos on "Foot suck".
Good luck in finding the perfect trikes for you both & the dog.

Good observation on the Dumont front suspension is more of a vibration damper than it is a true suspension. Scorpion FS and Ti-Fly have the most supple suspension.

    • @funfitnessrocks7842

rollingrecliner I tend to agree. Of course, they all feel AWESOME compared to a normal bike! So, I’m getting greedy at this point! :-)

At: 25:58 The statement of the way a mountain bike's suspension is not as efficient as the Scorpion. The more expensive mountain bikes, the rear suspension shock which is horizontally or near horizontally mounted, is like that of the Scorpion. The Scorpion suspension is modeled after these bikes. The art of rear suspension was used on 2-wheelers mountain bikes before recumbents even thought about adding suspension.

They're harder on the uphill for two reasons,
      1 They're heavier
2 You use the leg muscles slightly differently compared to an upright (This will improve with time and use, around 500-1000miles).

  • @feversol
    @feversol 4 роки тому +1

Ny Catrike Expedition reclines at 39 degrees. I've ridden 82 miles with NO discomfort because of the distribution of weight across hips through back. My two-wheel recumbent sits at 45 degrees with backrest and after 35 miles, you are quite aware that you're sitting more upright with weight on the buttocks. For long distance touring, I'm certain you want a seat reclining more than 45 degrees and that should be part of your trike selection.

To better illustrate the importance of professionally fitting a client, when Jess rode the gecko 20, the boom was still out too far. She was def. reaching for the pedals. Hat causes you to hyper extend the back of the leg.
All of these things make the experience completely different on the test.
You could try the same trike at 3 different places. Be fitted differently at each place. And have completely different experience/feel each time. That could be positive or negative for which one you decide to purchase.
Another example would be that the suspension trike Jess was on, was definitely better fitted to her leg length.
Mentally better and ergonomically feels better, then more likely to buy the more expensive trike.

Most bike ridders on any type of bike or trike posses a noticeable gut. Why, because you are limited on the parts of the body which get exercised. Power walking has several benefits: helps bone density, balance, trims the hips and gut. Downhill, you can not coast, you have to walk. Uphill you are working most of the body where as on a bike/trkle mostly limited to the legs. The ultimate would be to do both. Ride on a bike pathway while getting off the trike and do power walking. I use a tether link so that I may walk my trike while power walking.

The Dumont suspension is too limited, not worth the extra money. Smaller people fit Catrikes better.
AZUB Tri-Con has rear suspension, it is a stiffer quality trike. The AZUB Ti-Fly has state of the art full suspension.
The AZUB models have a sliding seat adjustment for a custom fit. That gives a better overall fit. if your arms are shorter, slide the seat forward on the rail for better reach. The boom may still need to be cut. But the AZUB has a lot to offer for the money.
I spoke with the owner Honza before i bought. I new that was the best choice for me at 5'7" tall. Love my T-Tris.
ICE Adventure has optional front and rear suspension. All models ICE are amazing.
Not so fond of the HP Veloteknic because they are narrow footprint and tend to tip on corners at high speeds. SCARRY..!
I chose the AZUB T-Tris 26 (larger wheel is smoother on bumps) non-suspension, and put good Schwalbe Big Apple PLUS (balloon) tires for built in suspension.

@@jaditention1713 Sounds like your fit. Craigslist has many recumbent trikes to physically look at and try. Look for cracks in the frame (as those pose a hazard and are not really fixable). When you sit down, put your heel on the pedal and see if it can be adjusted to that length.. (some have been cut down for shorter riders and it's expensive to buy a longer boom). Just check over the brakes and try out the shifting.. Many older trikes need a new chain (3 chain lengths can cost $60-$100 to replace. Look at the teeth on the cogs and
chainring to see if they are worn down, drive trains are very expensive.

I ride since about 1996. Have had 4 bikes until today. 1sr Fortybike amigo condor and now m5-559. Get a integrated shifters-set . Like rohloff or 7 or 9 in the axis. Shifts easier. Less maintenance less dirt problems. Less suspension the faster the bike goes and is. Les loss of energy. When get a hard stuff suspension. With luggage and baggage or a trailer then the harder it is the leas problems you will have and the faster you could go. Then the higher models are nicer for less flexible users. Get electrical support.

When riding in rain or anow you need some mudguards and lights front and back. The tires mainly have reflection or choose tripled with reflection. After getting used to the seat sets more flat. Its more stylish. then many belly are less in the way. you catch less wind. Theoretical you catch less rain in a lying position while you cycle. daily use for commuting, then a covered roof is better.

There's a safety issue with recumbents on regular roads - they're low and not so visible. If you ride a normal upright bike you can wear a bright yellow high-visibility jacket or tabard, but this doesn't work so well with a recumbent as the seat-back gets in the way. The silly flags that you can buy are, frankly, useless. Keeping the lights on all the time helps but, in my view, it's not enough. The do-it-yourself solution is to cut up a high-visibility jacket and fit it to the back of the seat or the back of the bike so there's always a significant expanse of yellow advertising your presence to other road users - but recumbent manufacturers need to grips with this issue. Better safe than sorry . . .

Are these easier on the back? I've have a very bad back (1 surgery so far but multiple others to come) and four neck surgeries and just can't ride my bikes any more. Would really like to find something that would support both my neck and back while riding. I would imagine that something with a full suspension would be a must?

So you guys liked the Ice trikes the best? I think I might like one of those but with the prices they go for I'll have to build my own, that's just way too much to pay for a tricycle. Thanks guys.

Just curious. Did you guys buy trikes and if so, what brand/model? Nice video. The buying process can take some time if you do it right, and it was good to see you taking the time to ride several because they all look similar but ride a little different, which is good, since human bodies are so varied, too!

Buying a factory trike is like buying a pre-built gaming pc, some parts might be what you need and some might not, If you want to be a dedicated tourer, I suggest just buying the frame kit then take your time researching for the rest of the components, I brought the frame kit and a heap of parts to the nearest dealer and asked the mechanic to teach me step by step on how to put everything together...

Thanks - that sounds like a pro tip! I have been saying that I would like to participate in the build. If for nothing else than to know how to perform maintenance. We’ll have to see just how brave we are when getting started! And funny enough, I’ve built countless PCs! Great analogy!

@@funfitnessrocks7842 Disclaimer I have never ridden an ice trike, but based on what I have heard from people and seen on their site, I think they have more options/parts for their trikes that cater to different body sizes, more than the other brands, especially the ice adventure line, like forward positioning bracket that move the seat forward for shorter legs (also brings the handlebars closer I think), cruciform that gives a lot of clearance, and a smaller version of the deluxe seat you tried designed for riders shorter than 5 4 ( so she can use a dedicated headrest). In the video the HP scorpion seems to fit her quite well except for the seat length and the long crank arm, if that trike doesn't work out for her then the ice adventure + above parts seems to be the next best option. Mostly second-hand knowledges, call their customer service for details.

    • @funfitnessrocks7842

BOB - we’re definitely welcoming of all this knowledge! These things aren’t cheap so this is all helpful info to help get started right! Recumbent trike-land appears to be a relatively small community so information as detailed as this is harder to come by - so thank you! Much appreciated!!

With ICE and HP Velotechnic you can customise the build at the ordering stage (gearing, brakes, seat etc even dynamo lighting).
I don't know about other manufacturers as I have not dealt with them.
The best bet is to ask lots of questions before deciding.

This is a great vid of your experience trying out trikes!!! Of course I am biased as I think the HPV Scorpion fs26 is the best! (The Dumont a distant 2nd). I am 5' 1.5" and I had to have the boom cut. So like in one of the comments below pick the most comfy, ergonomic trike and you can always have the boom cut to length. The only thing I have to complain about is that you were not offered the extended handle bars!!! Looking at how your 5'2" frame holds the handles, I can almost guarantee you would feel more comfy, secure and in more control with the longer handle bars... it gives you about 2-3 inches. This is also better for those sharp turns. Please make sure to give this a try before you buy!!! I have even spoke to "regular" sized folks that like the extended handle bars better!!!

Question for the couple that posted the video. Which trike did you end up gong with? Roughly how tall is the guy? sorry didn't catch your name. I am in an area where I will have to drive 500 miles to take a look do you recommend doing so or chance it and buying online without 2 days of travel?

jared7211 Terry here :-) - we’re working on a long overdue video to highlight our eventual choice (which isn’t 100% final - but almost)! We can’t wait to finally get started in this new world (and it should be very soon)! As for driving 500 miles... goodness. Given the subtlety of each individual’s preference, and the expense, I feel like you may need to make a small vacation around the travel or something. Trying before buying can really change your original perspective. In our case, trying all of these models and brands definitely took us to make a different choice than we originally thought. Sorry to say that when you’re looking at 500 miles...but maybe it could be combined with a small (and perhaps needed :-) vacation!

Greenspeed magnums are the go for a taller and/or heavier rider. My magnum big wheel is great, and has much better steering geometry than my older gt3. Indirect steering is more stable at speed too. The standard magnums are 160kg limit and the xl limit is 200kg.

Pedro Angulo , I know you can order ones from the Performer brand on Amazon which they ship to you and you assemble yourself. However, I still recommend finding a way to try one as they do feel different from one model to the next. There are also budget considerations... there are plenty of people happy with the Performer brand on UA-cam, but I’m not sure how the quality and options stack up compared to other brands. From what I understand, they are good for the money you spend.

I was surprised to hear them say that height is a major issue. Shops will quite commonly adjust boom and chain length for shorter riders. The SunSeeker Eco Tad has a different approach - the seat adjusts, sliding along the boom, so you can not only adjust for a short rider but either share the trike with another rider or resell to a taller rider. See it here www.utahtrikes.com/PROD-11619618.html. By the way, Ginger, I'm 72 and shopping for a recumbent too.
