  • Hopefully this may help someone shoot a few crows. Everyone has their own preferred methods, but these work for me.

    Great video, super valuable tips. Nice to see that you manufacture things yourself, you can buy everything, but making it yourself is a nice part of the hunt.

    great video and tips, but reading through some of the other comments regarding choice of gun and shot size at the end of the day its personal preference and whatever gets the job done to the way you find best. I use a beretta silver pigeon 12g with 1/4 and 1/2 fixed choke and use clear pigeon 30g 6 shot or Hull fibre special pigeon 32g 6 shot both on crows and pigeon both work equally as well as each other and I have a good success rate with this combo. so keep up the good work.

    Really enjoyed your video! Been shooting clays for a year and only tried crows last week, great fun but boy their tricky. Changing my choke upped my game but still need to work on my lead. You need to do a video on this.

    very helpful mate, do you pick/re-arrange the dead birds during the shoot or leave them where they drop? I seem to find that the shot birds keep the flyers out of range but when i break cover and sort them out i get no more crows at all.

    do you just leave the dead crows laying where they fall during the hunt? or do you have to retrieve them before the next bunch of crows show up? loved the video thanks for posting

    • @sjb685
      @sjb685  10 років тому

      The crows are gathered up and either put on cradles or just have their heads raised by a wire stake.

  • @sjb685
    @sjb685  10 років тому

    The shot birds get put on cradle that I make. They look realistic. If the crows can see a dead one, they will either stay away or try and mob it.

    love your video, Introduced My son to crow hunting 2 or 3 years ago. We both love it but only get to go 2-3 times a year. Have you ever tried an owl decoy? Crows hate owls and really come in looking for a fight.

    • @sjb685
      @sjb685  10 років тому +1

      I haven't tried an owl. These were feeding but the addition of an owl could help maybe. I did wing a crow that landed further down the field. Before I could dispatch it, others came from nowhere to attack it. They are so aggressive.

    I have tried motion decoys and it seems to put the birds off. They have excellent eyesight. I know some people have success with them though. I would like to try a flapper though as these look quite good. Thanks for being the 1000 viewer ! Sorry, no prizes.

    Is crow shooting a big thing in the UK? I live in the states and have never heard of anyone hunting them. #1 Crows are not that plentiful and don't seem to be a nuisance. A few years ago they seemed to flock in a town close by and there was a major issue about them in the paper from there. They did a lot of abatement for them sticky goo on windowsills and nail spikes on roof edges etc. They must've moved on because the flap about it just died down then stopped. So, do you have a pest problem and its ok to kill them?

    I used a pump at first for everything for reliability reasons but with benneli/berreta/stoger using the inertia driven systems I made the switch and in no way is it as fast. I thought the same thing but it's just wrong. I did fine with my pump but getting doubles is WAY easier with a auto loader. Triples are possible but still really hard. As for your shot size you should try a high brass #8. You will be amazed at how much better you do. I started out the same as you and used #6 and they will leave large holes in your shot pattern.

    • @sjb685
      @sjb685  9 років тому

      jacobhwrd1 I would not dream about using #8 on live game. I agree with a previous comment that with 5's there is not so many in the pattern, but that's why you have different chokes. Dont forget im using lead cartridges and distances can be 40 yds. Im not convinced #8 will stop carrion crows effectively.

    • @jacobhwrd1
      @jacobhwrd1 9 років тому

      Go to crowbusters.com and read their articles. Bob Aronson headshot more pros than anyone else alive. 150,000 to be exact. He uses number 8 for a reason. Number 8 will easily kill a crow. And you will have less wounded crows and more dead crows. it will need Crow is not a humane kill like you think you're getting with your 6 is. Start using seven and a half or 8 and you will see more birth tumble then more birds get wounded.

      My tuppence worth; I have only been shooting for a year but near enough every day for a year so thats a lot of hours. In this time Ive been shooting clays, pheasant, grouse, woodcock and geese. FYI, I also shoot Turkey and Hog when im in the US and Bore in Romania. I have a large collection of Benelli shotguns but previously shot berretta and Winchester. In my opinion doubles are not WAY easier with a semi than a pump, they are the same speed depending on the shooters skills, in fact; the pump sets your brain up better for the next shot. Pumps are just better fun too.
      As for your comments on the #8 brass, these are completely no use for wildgame. I have shot these a couple of times and had to double tap my kill. I've played around with many cartridges and always come back to Clear Pigeon #5 for game, #3 or #1 depending on the type of geese.

      Crows are not that fast as they come into decoys so I just swing through and give them 2 - 3 foot of lead. Obviously if they are high or faster, give them more. Just need to practice.!
