I think Sondae is the best example of someone who praises God throughout his music! His songs are fully directed at God, super scripture-based, and insanely high-quality. While his genre isn't traditional CHH, it captures the essence - it's more like a fusion of lofi, Afrobeat, and hip-hop. Even his songs about himself are directed towards God, which is beautiful to see! Another awesome CHH artist is Jackie Hill Perry - her new album "Practice" is all about work ethic and God, not flashy or self-centered. It's all about glorifying God and continually preaching His message!

    Tip: Read the lyrics first.
If you’re listening to a new song that you think you’ll like, pause it after 15-30 seconds to read the lyrics. If it’s safe, listen to the rest. That way you won’t struggle to let it go, or be tricked into believing you’re missing out on a “good song” that is actually harmful to you. There could be times when you think it’s okay, until you finally hear the Holy Spirit telling you to turn away. Be obedient to that discernment, pray and read the bible if you’re still unsure. Don’t question how God will provide the answer before you’ve tried asking, He’ll surprise you.
    Remember: Words matter more.
A good beat to back them up is a plus. People are realizing that the songs / artists they listen to were encouraging spiritual harm or disrespecting God (Matt. 7:15;18-19). So if someone recommends a song to you, even if you trust them, read the lyrics first. Cause at the end of the day it’s YOUR journey alone with God. Songs can have heavy influences (Prov. 18:20-21 | Matt. 12:33;37). We can’t be eager to agree with what our friend group has on repeat if we feel the song is problematic. Desire to lead people toward the true Good News that is Jesus Christ (Acts 5:20) and consider Matt 7:3-5 when you do. Don’t trip alongside them if you’re given the gift to see / hear what they can’t. May you be reminded every day that Lord Jesus paid for your forgiveness in full. Glory to God, stay obedient to His will!

As a Christian Artist myself, I low-key get you but i’d say it’s not more so being boastful but testifying of the goodness of God even in those materialistic things. There is songs where I rap about spiritual things and Jesus how God saved me from a spiritual point of view, but there is also song where i rap about the blessings and struggles of being a Christian in the physical world. But it’s never to exalt myself but to testify to those who think God won’t do that for you and you should sell your souls to become wealthy because with God he just wants you to suffer to be come holy. I remember even as a secular artist that used to be my mindset, And i became a believer before a Christian Rap but discovering the Hulvey’s showed my that the dream God gave me can still be lived out as a Christian.

@imsotumelo I totally understand. Yet again, my point is that too many of these christian rappers focus on blessings and not salvation or redemption. Not everyone is call to the 'worldly success' however Jesus's heart is for all to be saved. That's what I would love to see more of. More of salvation and building up of the faith

@ I feel you, was also saying this the other day on Christian Rap blog post about “What need to changed in CHH” and i said we need more worship in CHH because we most make testimonial music and it can come off self service because it sounds like what God does for you all the time and not repentance and loving him solely for who He is.

I think it’s definitely having a heart to worship the LORD has to start either the individual. The problem is instead of stepping back from the mic to allow the LORD to prune many artists who are in the Christian music industry still put out music anyways which is wrong. Souls over numbers. That shows the selfishness within the person that must be addressed. How can an artist be on lukewarm , a lack of discipleship , still drinking milk though the LORD desires for them to eat meat ,or even worse on their way to hell and still claim Jesus is truly LORD? Not saying every artists is like this. Some really love Jesus ,but a lot of the music is being watered down for views, likes, and comments.

@@JustStheshCHH is at the best it’s been in a while bro and I’ve been listening for more than 10 years. We are so quick to say something is worldly but we have to understand we have the power and ability in what God created. Understand different styles of rap and even the aspect of just making music as art. My point is that most people you mentioned share the gospel and speak on it enough not to say there isn’t some who need to change. It’s better to say that it may be a small problem but not a big one CHH is expanding and we are in a new era we have to accept what’s coming because of the change in music in general. Love the points just don’t thing it’s that relevant when artist shouldn’t be held to the same standard as pastors.

“speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord,” Ephesians 5:19 my personal problem as a former secular hip hop/rap listener is idolizing the artist and certain songs to the point of overplaying them, wanting to be like them. Being held captive to the lifestyle. Not good. I had to lay down rap until I got a good grasp in the Word. Newly born Christians can be great artists for the Lord but I’d strongly encourage to not release your songs of praise until it is word proofed. “Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” -Matthew 5:19 We don’t want to least, we want to be GREAT! No one sets out to be least especially for the Lord. We want to be GREAT! A persons heart can be right and loving the Lord but the knowledge and wisdom might not bee seen through their words. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6

Been listening to CHH for about 2 decades and what I will say is that there is a spectrum that exist that can appeal to different stages in your personal walk but the music is also perspective on where that artist is in their personal relationship with Christ

    • @joshua-wh6eg
      @joshua-wh6eg 3 дні тому +2

I agree, I also think that not all music has to be entirely Christ centered and referencing scripture at every step, if an artist wants to express a human experience in the context of his faith, I don't think that's a problem. for example, if you started off in bad situation and God took you out of that with the gift he gave you and you decide to make a sort of victory anthem, while thanking GOD and keeping away from any abhorrent prideful statements, I'd believe that to be a wonderful thing.

I've read through the comments and most people seem to be on track. rare stuff.
I've been listening to CHH for a decade plus now and this video is spot on. Another thing i see CHH artist do which shouldn't be encouraged is "always reflecting on their past". what I mean by this is:
1st album - talked about how you were in sin, depression, God saved you.
2nd album - reminded us about you were in sin, your vices, how you were saved,
3rd album - still reminding us of your past life, where you came from to where you are now.
~ do you see the pattern?~
As the voice that you are, you need to recognize that growth is a very important part of your music. you must lead your audience, fans to growth. your listeners should grow from being saved - to be babies - to worship - to a personal relationship with God.
As your career advances you must go deeper, your fellowship with God must become better for you to be the channel for something more with your music. Otherwise you are just a secular artist without cuss words.

We have seen what happens if you don't differentiate the two. People become lost, confused, double-minded, or straight-up uninterested in trying to purify the music or activities that they entertain. I do Christian Rap too and sometimes listening to someone who talks about his journey with God in a Song edifies yourself too, because we as Christians share the same struggles and blessings. But listening to a Christian Song about blessings would be wrong if you are in a sad state in your faith, so it depends where you at and the perfect Bible verse about this topic is this:
    James 5:13-15
13 Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms. 14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: 15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.

as saved ex rapper and current preacher I completely agree with you and personally. The reason I did not transition to Christian rap is because it did not come out as natural as secular rap came out. Another reason is that I was not able to separate myself from rap culture as a whole when listening to Christian rap, I just had something connecting me to secular part, but it is completely possible to make Christian rap work
Many secular artists do include Christian aspects in their songs, we can clearly see they're lifestyle they portray online which plant certain seeds in new believers. we can guess that these artists truly are fighting a battle and we can just pray for them but as a Christian rapper you are portraying to be of the lord and have an strong influence on those of the lord therefore you have to be sensitive with what you plant in their minds, you do not want to deprive your brother or sister who lack knowledge as this could lead to sin. Let us not be of this world but be renewed by the spirit.

I noticed this recently listening to one of the rappers you mentioned. I think people are blinded by the fact something is christian labeled, that it must be good or "at least they're not rapping about xyz" but theres a way to do things. If believers dont speak out about it from a pure place and a place of love (if led to) then we'd be doing new believers a disservice by not exposing light on something that can allow Christ to convict them or the artist themselves or as a warning to those who want to get into that form of artistry. Thank you for your commentary and your editing is very good and the intro intrigued me to keep watching.

I completely understand where you are coming from and thank you for your humility in sharing your 2 cents dawg.
Though I believe it's important to remember first of all that CHH is music i.e. art. It's not a sermon. These artists are not pastors nor preachers when they enter the booth. People will express themselves in their most authentic manner while still staying faithful to God wherever they are in their faith journey. I think we need to give our brothers and sisters the space and the grace to do that. Not every Christian rapper sees their music as ministry and some do. And that's okay because there's nowhere in the bible where it explicitly says one's artistic expression must save souls. The artists that do however, those are the ines we can share with new believers provided the doctrine is sound. As for the others--seeing these guys as regular people who just happened to be Christians, that make music, will free us of alot of scrutinizing and energy being wasted on people who we don't even know personally, instead of focusing on our own problems in our own lives.
As for the gun metaphors, we see quite a number of warfare metaphors used in scripture in a positive way, so I think these guys are in the clear.
I just felt the need to leave my own 2 cents here because im really passionate about CHH. Not all CHH is the same and that's fine. As long as each artist is being faithful to God and their conscience. God bless mfowethu✊🏽

The Lord opened me up to a whole new world of music that’s ultimately glorifying his name no matter how it may come off to some. At the end of the day, none of these artists are cursing and glorifying violence or negative topics of the enemy. These rappers/artists aren’t pastors so we shouldn’t be judging or expecting the same mission from them. As I mentioned in my comment above, the scriptures is full of various themes such as worship, war, love, intimacy, lament, history and not just the death and resurrection of Christ. CHH is better than ever before because of its diversity in its subject matter. Its not perfect, because you will have imperfect people make mistakes in their presentation, but thats the beauty of art! We grow, and we learn and through that we get more creative works of art. Every artists, as long as they arnt directly breaking commands in the scripture, have the freedom to navigate their creativity (Rom 14).

I’ve been on a similar journey, I think as you grow by God’s grace your appetite for God’s word grows as well and tbh it’s not very prevalent in most of the Christian rappers songs. Even in their videos too, as you said, except two that I’ve found exceptional, (Holy Spirit by Hulvey and No longer bound by Forrest Frank are really amazing cause they’re focused on God’s power through people’s testimonies/baptisms). It’s a really important point to note what you have in this conversation, thanks for sharing :)

There was a time where you spoke up about it you were labeled as being “too Pharisee”. I’m glad to see we are ima time where men like yourself are speaking about it lovely and with wisdom. I guess part of the equation is how you see the music, Is it a Ministry vs An Occupation/Job,
Obviously we do all things to glorify Christ but you get what I mean.
And I would agree that boastfulness has become more of an issue.
But something to keep in mind is that a lot of these artists come from different backgrounds
and what's normal to them and the lens they see the world can be quite different to what you
or me might see things as, what I've found helpful is to give the artist/person the benefit of
the doubt If I don't fully understand what there saying but obviously if they're compromising
e.g Spreading false teaching etc then staying away is the way to go.
But for personal listening always go with your conscious, if you don't feel
uplifted or that they aren't glorifying God then listen to something else that you
    feel comfortable with.

As for Secret! I like his new album 'Holy Hits 3: Before The Finale'. I think the new drill album 'CCD2' was too fire to listen to. Almost every song was upbeat, there was hardly time to rest, but I guess that's what you should expect from a 'Christians Can't Do What' album. Well said brother. I’ve made Christian rap myself in times past and I made those similar mistakes as well. But the Lord showed me what I was doing and I repented of that movement to really make music that truly glorifies him and not the world. My stance now is Christian rap isn’t sinful. But compromise can be easy when you add worldly influences to the song that’s supposed to be used for ministry/evangelism purposes. Even down to the appearance and the sound of the track, it should match his characteristics and it should be rooted in love. Can’t mix the gospel message and words of adoration unto God with a sound that is influenced by the world, the works of the flesh, or made with the purpose to usher in unclean spirits to the hearer and not the Holy Spirit. We can’t minister grace to the hearer with Christian rap by sounding worldly and appearing to be worldly for the sake of having a draw. It’s the Lord’s draw and not ours. So it’s our responsibility to represent him rightly and not mix his holiness and righteousness with the patterns of the world in song form.

I ageee, but to be fair the secularism and “my life success means my relationship with God must be great”, is a trend amongst mainstream Christian churches/ preaching as well. I would argue that the root cause of CHH being the way it is is mainstream Christianity. The Mike Todd’s of the world has pushed this secular/ success message to the masses. But yeah great video though that covers a proximate issue. My point is mainstream CHH music is pushing the message of “the church”, and until that message changes… CHH won’t change.

I think the "gun" metaphor is supposed to be a modern representation of when the bible would say "sword of the spirit" metaphor. I don't think I entirely agree with you on that one since swords were always used for violence in the past and today, so making the excuse that we shouldn't say guns just cause its been killing people kinda says the same about swords too, since those have been killing people wayyy before guns became existent, yet the bible still uses those metaphors. I think still as a christian artist it is ok to be a little bit less soft in my music, but still there has to be a balance between being soft and being rough because there we're times where Jesus was not soft toward people, but he balanced being gentle toward people too. Anyways those are just my. thoughts, if I'm wrong, correct me, I will do my own research into any responses into this to make sure. But thanks! Very insightful video

As a Christian artist, I think people suffering from legalism will never fully appreictae REAL CHRISTIAN ARTIST who are well rounded individuals because it doesnt always fit in a "Church" box. Christian artist are still real people. We love the LORD, we worship God, we give him praise and we still go through things. We still have character flaws that need work, we still have things we struggle with and we are STILL talking about the Gospel, God & the way we are to live in this world in the fullness of what being a Christian is and means. Most people cannot appreciate that until they get off of their self-righteous soapbox & allow God to reveal to them the depths of our messages, which are Holy Spirit filled.

Let me give you some advice. I know it is unsolicited. NEVER look to music as the main thing that feeds your faith. That is as insane as looking to snacks for your main physical nourishment and not properly cooked meals with all the nutrients you need.
The main thing that feeds your faith should NEVER BE music even if it is preaching at you solid theology. I wish every person of faith understood this.
What feeds your faith is grace through prayer, study and community with solid loving believers and you having loving elders who are solid over you NOT looking to music FIRST.
Also Paul used metaphors like the sword of the Spirit and in his day they were the equivalent of guns that killed people so…
Anyway stop looking to music as the main thing for the nourishment of your faith.

Another issue that we might be seeing in both Christian and secular rap is that there’s bound to be a lack of humility and honesty on some people’s parts. We also see that it’s rare to hear songs about struggles and real personal conflicts just after making songs about how successful the artists are for most of their careers. The best possible example I can give is with Dax, an artist I’ve listened to for months now. Years ago, he made songs about his successes but he made a few mistakes and has gotten the ire of a lot of people. It was only until he released “Dear Alcohol” when his career had gotten a much needed jumpstart and his new audience had pushed the song to be his most popular one yet. The reason why it was so was because “Dear Alcohol” was different; it was a song about real struggle and a lot of people related to it. Little to nobody can relate to someone getting a million dollar mansion or super car or the company of the sexually promiscuous. If I were to release a rap song or anything of the sort, I’d wanna be real to others and to myself. I’d want to let people know, “I’m not the best nor will I ever be. I just wanna put my honest thoughts out there.”

You can actually hear the praise in hulvey and Caleb's songs, hulvey is more exhortation amd Caleb's songs are more of proverbs or ecclesiastical, Alex Jdan songs are pure praise and even one of them speaks about submission to God . They don't exactly use "worldly" language, you're point is valid but like you said they're trying to draw people in but there is a certain wisdom to it, they're using it in line with what the bible says like direct metaphors, nobigdyl, Andy Mineo and Lecrae do this very well. They also give advice and warning in their songs as well, like how to love as a Christian or how to stand out, the videos might need some upgrades in certain areas but it's not really for us to criticize at the end of the day, they're all put under someone by God and whoever that person is will correct them if necessary.
I've been listening to Christian rap for a while like it wasy first ontroduction to hip hop. So i get most of the questions that you have and I've come to understand that there is a place and a need for such music in The Kingdom.

This makes sense, thanks for sharing! It’s important for people to still have to be mindful and use discernment though. Especially when you want to continue to grow as a Christian. I agree w what this guy is saying. There are some great songs, but not every song fully evokes Christianity. Esp some of the artists you mentioned. Nobigdyl is pretty prideful and sometimes judgmental and arrogant. Lecrae even has a song with Ty Dolla sign in which Ty does say a few worldly things. I think it should be more about Jesus and the Bible versus being in line with the Bible, if it’s really all about God.
