  • This week Sarah and Kendahl take on their final form and turn into dogs and bark at each other for an hour. (JK - but that'd be pretty cool right?). They discuss the ethics of buying dogs from breeders rather than rescuing, and all the complications that often come with dogs who come from breeders.

Eggs that we eat are unfertilized and they only become chicks if a male rooster fertilizes them haha. It’s gross, but eggs are like chicken periods 😂

I remember my parents got my rat Terrier Sophie from a breeder online and she was HUGGEEE like fat and taller than most tall Rat terriers. We discovered that she had a weird genetic mutation thag made her not stop growing. She also had horrible anxiety that caused her to pick her legs raw to the point where we'd have to wrap them to make her stop. Also, developed dog diabetes and became blind due to the insulin prescribed to her. Wild ride but I loved her so much. Pls do the most research you can when looking for a dog from a breeder. I do not condone breeders and infact hate them, but if that ends up happening in life pls just give the dog the best life they can

one thing i learned recently thanks to tiktok is that there are "birth clinics" for dogs which translates to non vet tech people doing operations out of their own house.
The overbred dogs casnt even birth naturally most of the times so these inhuman people cut one more cost of not going to a vet to get their dog a c-section but some random ass untrained people who do it for way cheaper.
its horrid. im already very biased against breeders but if you want to tell me your breeder is "ethical" please have you requested their vet techs history? how did they dog give birth and where? see the paperwork.

You can absolutely find beagle mixes at every shelter, especially in the south. I’ve had soooo many beagle mutts over the years and they’re all wonderful. I have a rescue now that’s probably part chihuahua or pug, and she’s the sweetest girl in the world. Sure, she eats shit, but so do breeder dogs lol

honestly, as someone who has a breed dog when ppl get defensive about their dogs it’s bc they know they got it from an unethical breeder. i’ve had schnauzers my whole life and my last dog died at 12 and she was completely healthy: she was hit by a careless driver. my schnauzer now is also very healthy and super smart (im training her to be an anxiety service dog and she’s excelling!🎉 ) it’s so easy to get a good healthy dog, but it’s true that a lot of people just want to say they have dog without having the responsibility of giving them a good life.

I’ve lived with someone in college who bought a 4,000 dollar bulldog puppy that had to get eyelid surgery since they folded inward and their eyelashes would poke their eyes and tail surgery since it was deformed and also grew inward so she couldn’t properly clean herself. She was constantly getting UTI’s because of her tail. I honestly do think it says a lot about someone’s character when they support breeding, and although my roommate eventually took her dog to the vet about the UTIs, it was scary to see how long she let her constantly rub and itch herself while peeing everywhere before taking her in

dogs are my special interest (wellbred purebreds to be specific) i 100% want to show dogs as a hobby some day
the reason why dog shows dont have a mutt category is because dog shows arent "who has the cutest dog" competitions. each breed has a written and visual breed standard and the dogs who win match their breed standard the most. so its not like when a poodle wins its because the judge thinks the poodle is cuter than the bloodhound or golden retriever. its because the poodle matches the poodle breed standard better than the bloodhound matched the bloodhound breed standard. with mutts there is no breed standard (obviously its a mixed breed dog).
we need to have reputable ethical breeders. without good breeders many dog breeds would go extinct, or we would only have mixed breeds/poorly bred purebreds available to us. i want to know the lineage of my future dogs and i want to have my breeders support for the entire life of my dog. i also really only like rare breeds that there is 0% chance of finding at shelters.
    Adopt or shop responsibly!!

dog trainer here sooooo humping is not completely neutral behavior it can be because of overstimulation and often those dogs don’t have an outlet for that overstimulation. That’s why lick mats, and snuffle mats are really helpful. That’s a better outlet for your dog and not most of the time all of the time it is, the owners fault that their dog is the way that they are hundred percent guaranteed. We actually tell people at our facility. Bad news everything that’s wrong with your dog is your fault. The good news is also everything that’s wrong with your dog is your fault so you can fix it! (Obviously, that’s not always the case when people adopt dogs that had previous owners)

My cousin buys pugs from a breeder so all three of her dogs are related. So definitely some inbreeding happening over there. She had to get her newest one like a nasal widening surgery bc her snout is basically nonexistent. Oh yeah and the oldest one is morbidly obese. I only have rescues, but working in vet met, ethical breeders are so important. Ethical breeding gives us more healthy dogs in the long run. Unfortunately, rescue dogs can be unpredictable, both behaviorally and health wise. An ethically breed dog will be more predictable. Ultimately, I think you can do the work to find a rescue dog that will suit your life, but I will never knock someone choosing to buy an ethically bred dog. Backyard breeding, puppy mills, etc. is the problem, and people purchasing dogs from these breeders contribute to the problem.

Thank you for this comment. I was surprised that they were so negative about people buying dogs in general and not just those who bought them unethically. Some people want a puppy from the start, of a particular breed that suits their lifestyle & family unit best. I don’t think it’s bad if they took the time to research and get a dog from a genuine breeder. It’s not always about being lazy because they can’t train a shelter dog

As someone that grew up on a farm, chicken eggs are naturally unfertilized until/unless a rooster roots the chicken beforehand. Eggs won't just develop chicks overtime unless they are fertilized by the rooster.

Sarah you would hate haveing a beagle, they have been breed to bark/bay. They will overstimulate you on the daily. But a gray hound sounds like a good fit for you. They have like once daily zoomies but other then that they are pretty lazy big dogs. And you can rescue retired race dogs and they are usually pretty chill

Eggs are unfertilized unless a rooster is present. Just like women passing eggs during a period that aren’t fertilized. Also, when Sarah said she wanted a not high energy dog and the suggestion was “oh, like a lab?”. Labs are crazy high energy lol. They’re smart and trainable, but super high energy. Lastly, as someone who has a rescue, I understand why first time owners may want to buy from a reputable breeder instead of adopting. My dog, who I adore, is an 85 lb pit mix with a history of abuse and has dog reactivity. At the beginning of having him, it was very difficult. But I have had many dogs over the years and was prepared to handle him. He would’ve been too much for a lot of first time owners and they would’ve either returned him to the shelter or put him in situations that could’ve gone really badly because they simply didn’t know better. When you buy from a reputable, ethical breeder, they do breed for not only physical health, but also temperament. That can make a huge difference. I’m very pro adoption, but people adopting dogs they are absolutely not equipped to handle doesn’t help the people or the dogs.

When I did my Vet Assistant practicum there was an English bulldog that came for a c-section (side note - helping revive puppies is terrifying!) and the poor Mama had such difficulties breathing day to day that they kept the ET tube in after surgery because she could FINALLY breathe and was comfortable. And her owners were just breeding her to try for the rare/more expensive colourings 😢 they were planning to breed her again as soon as they could. ❤️‍🩹 People think they are better off with these pure breeds, but we are breeding these anatomical PROBLEMS over and over (like brachycephalic airways) so they usually have even worse health issues than any "mutts"

  • @wolf-gh2dz
    @wolf-gh2dz 3 місяці тому +3

this comment is insanely fucking long. sorry?
honestly instead of "adopt don't shop", the best solution is "adopt OR shop, after careful consideration and plenty of research into both breeders and rescues in your area". because there are really reputable and serious breeders who go to great lengths to ensure that their animals are taken care of and there are really scummy rescues / shelters as well. good rule of thumb for both: if they don't allow you to visit with the animal(s) before committing to buying / adopting one, don't trust them. also don't adopt or buy from those that support declawing cats.
if you're buying from a breeder, research the breed very thoroughly (when you think you've done enough research, do more) so you know what proper care is, what issues are common, and know what to look for and what to watch out for when visiting a breeder you're considering. learn what the most common issues for this specific breed are and have prepared questions about those issues to ask in person; if they seem annoyed, resistent, or offended that you're asking questions about their breeding practices and the health of their animals, they're probably not trustworthy. also, if they sell unsterilized animals or else don't require buyers to sterilize them at a certain age, i wouldn't trust them. obviously don't buy from backyard breeders. also obviously don't buy from breeders that breed and / or support breeding animals that aren't just more prone to certain health issues, but their entire existence is a health issue (brachycephalic dogs, those insanely inbred instagram bullies, scottish folds (looking at you tswift), munchkins, et cetera).
if you're adopting from a shelter: get in touch with shelter volunteers / the general animal welfare community in your area to sus out the rescue's reputation. how do they treat their animals? do they have a history of lying about or misrepresenting their animals' health and / or behavior? if they condone or encourage outdoor cats don't trust them. also i'm generally on the fence about rescues that promote or participate in tnr, but that's a me thing.
also if you live in the uk and are looking for a cat and you DON'T want to let your cat outside (aka you don't want to neglect your pet lmao), it's basically impossible to adopt because rescues there are insane. the vast majority REQUIRE that you let your cat out unsupervised, that you have a cat flap, and will perform random house checks to see if you're following these rules and if you aren't they can legally take the cat back. so if you're cat searching in the uk buying from a breeder or getting a cat off of craigslist or facebook or smth is basically the only way lmao.
edit: though i don't think they're taking into account that while cat breeds are basically purely aesthetic outside of a few very specific breeds, dog breeds are (for the most part) bred for specific tasks. and sure many don't actually perform those tasks in the modern day, but they are still highly specialized to specific lifestyles while any give cat will be fine anywhere. certain dogs are predisposed to be better at tracking and hunting, these ones for guarding, these for herding, et cetera. so i actually understand wanting a purebred dog a lot more than a purebred cat, because they are generally suited to specific lifestyles.
dog breeds are generally more rigid than cat breeds; you can find specific breeds of dog in shelters, meanwhile i don't care if the shelter volunteer said your cat is a maine coon, if you don't have the pedigree papers no it isn't. aesthetic qualities in dogs are generally limited to certain breeds, while basically any "moggie" cat can have the exact coat and coloring of a purebred. in a mutt, you can identify breed traits and make fairly accurate guesses as to what breeds its a mix of based off appearence and behavior, while cats tend to lose their breed traits after one or two generations being crossbred out.

100000000% we have the moooooost anxiety ridden lil baby who we got as a puppy from a rescue (her mom was pregnant and was the initial rescue). She only likes dogs, not people, so when we wanted to get her a friend because remote work was ending we decided to buy a dog from a (more) ethical breeder. I believe it would have irresponsible to adopt another dog who may have had just as many issues and that a bred puppy was a better bet, temperament-wise. Best decision we’ve made. When they both pass we will adopt again.
