it's so bizarre to me that companies are like "no one wants to work" when they are either 1. not paying living wages, or 2. don't ever respond if they pay well 🥴
this!!!! this!!!! 2023 has been bizarre because people are trying to hard to block out the recent past! and act like EVERYBODY wasnt just scared af & lowkey still is ❤️🩹
My bestie has been with her job for 18 months. Earlier this year she got an offer from another company for higher pay. Her current job convinced her to stay. Today they laid her off because the company is in a slump. No severance, no warning, they totally screwed her. I never trust when jobs say “we’re a family here” because that ends so fast.
okay but an episode on HOAs would be so great, i feel like i don’t truly understand them but i’m constantly hearing horror stories about being part of one, and i think you two would do a great job tackling the topic!
Usually they’re extremely mundane. Every neighborhood (3) I’ve lived in has has one and in 20 years I’ve only gotten like 1 letter and it was like “reminder to make sure your house numbers are visible” My current one is $125/year and basically states you cannot have a fence over 6’ You cannot block visibility of signs and corners That’s all 🤷🏼♀️ But I’ve heard the horror stories too and it’s always so confusing bc like I’ve never known someone irl who has encountered a bad HOA. Now, for condos, HOA fees are like $200-$500/month which is inSANE but they do mow for you and take care of your roof and stuff but still, they’re making a nasty profit
I know Kendahl won't see this but when she talked about her dad's passing and how there is so much pain when someone is sick is basically exactly how it feels when someone you love is in active addiction and not willing to get help. My sister passed in 2018 from her battle with addiction and when I got the call she had died it was heartbreaking but I'd also been waiting for it for so long that it was almost a relief to know she wasn't experiencing any more pain - and before anyone tries to debate that addiction and terminal illness are different (and I'm not saying they aren't), in a lot of ways we as a family knew she would likely never get better because she didn't want to and you can't force an adult to get better for you. My point in all this being I talk about her death in kind of a nonchalant way sometimes but it's because I had a decade of talking sadly about how much I wished she would just get better and almost pre-mourning the worst?
I work at Starbucks, and literally three weeks ago a woman and her entire family came through the drive through, SAID THEY HAD COVID, and still tried to pay at the window. We made our manager serve them, and she fucking tried to give us A CASH TIP and we all said “no thank you. Please leave.” People don’t fucking care about service workers. 32:06
omg i cant wait for this episode because even though just about every place is hiring- they never respond to you when you apply? I'm so sick of being ghosted by companies. (hopefully this mini rant applies to the episode LOL)
It’s insane the high level positions which won’t respond. I’ve applied for moderately high level positions and never even received a rejection email. Like wtf?
YES OH MY GOD even last year when I was working at Starbucks, people would go through the drive thru while coughing and sneezing in my face. They’d order medicine balls and I felt like I was just a robot to them. People would come through so much that we couldn’t make the drink anymore because we ran out of tea bags. They would be so rude when we’d tell them we were out of the drink and it’s like you’re coming here sick and you’re mad at me??? Then I got Covid 🥰
35:26 I will never forget the Thursday before Covid was pronounced a global pandemic I was in a college lecture (it was like some cultural class) and on Tuesday a lot of people had been out sick and on Thursday it was me and like 4 other students and the professor said “wow. They’re dropping like flies” And that was the last time I ever saw him because we went fully remote the following Monday
I’m 24 and my mom died from MS a year ago, she was sick ever since I was 5. I totally relate to Kendahl and my boyfriend and I were there when it happened I would always give my mom a million kisses whenever I said goodbye and whenever I heard an ambulance I always texted her. The fear as a child of your parent constantly passing / seeing your parent live in a painful restricting life is SO much for kids to handle I hope we heal one day haha love to anyone in a similar situation
Was honestly so nice to hear about Kendahl’s experience with her dad 😭 I’m sorry you went through that, it was so relatable tho and not talked about ever. My dad died when I was 11 and from then on I never was normal w my mom and always fearing her death, getting mad at her and fearing it being our last experience so suppressing it, etc…. So freeing to slowly release that constraint dread / fear
I have a million insane stories but once i interviewed at a cigar production place where an old white man berated his son in law (who was in the room) about his failed business and how he had to save him and his family who now work for him. He asked me if I was online at all and in the same breath assured me that he had a black friend once???? Also, his wife (who was roughly 25 years old and thai) was out working on the floor, there were two large dogs in the room while I interviewed, and i was told that if hired i would be required to PRAY with the staff every morning. At the end of the interview, he praised my parents for raising a good kid, to which i finally snapped out of my dumbfounded stupor and said,"they had nothing to do with it", and I left.
I worked an awful receptionist job at a doctors office during the pandemic. Pretty sure my boss paid me illegally lol. I quit at the end of 2021 after applying for over 50 jobs and only heard back from a temp position. The job market is WILD and I’m holding onto my current job for dear life even though I’m still not making enough to live in the city where I work
i was brought in for a 2 hour unpaid “trial shift” after months of no response for job applications. just when i think it went well i get an email saying unfortunately i didn’t make the cut. turns out the place has a reputation of getting young people in for free shifts and just never hiring 💀💀💀
That’s what “trial shifts” normally are, or the interviews where they make you do 30 minutes on the floor to “get a feel for the job” like no you just want me to finish someone’s shift that’s just clocked off early 😂least that’s what it’s like in the UK
Pre pandemic, I applied for a cafe baking job that I was overqualified for as a high volume pastry chef. During the interview the person asked “what’s the most important thing to have in a bakery?” And as a jokester, I said “butter”…she didn’t even smile?! I then said “time management and multi-tasking” but I knew right then I was not taking the job if it was offered to me. I got an email a week later saying they “went with another candidate” ☠️
My city was hiring so I did an interview with them and they said they loved me and invited me back for another interview. I have a chronic illness that fluctuates a lot with pain and fatigue and I was having a not very good day so I was using a cane for my second interview. The hiring manager looked shocked when they saw my cane, asked if I had the physical ability to do the job and then said they were no longer interested before we even started the interview. I was crushed.
i finally got a job at a small cafe that hopefully isn't going to suck but oh my god its a nightmare finding a job. either they don't ever respond to you or they have the most ridiculous ass requirements. i honestly have had a more difficult time finding a job after covid than before which makes no sense because way more people are hiring?
also bc i like to comment. i worked at starbucks before and during the pandemic and people were god-awful. I used to love working there but I would get yelled at and berated so frequently or have people dump their political views on me so often I started to despise all customers because I assumed they would be awful to me. the amount of times i had to tell someone to put on a mask and got called names for it. I also got covid from there because people would come in with it anyway, and I had coworkers who were immunocompromised. It was fucked.
my nan had terminal cancer where she was only given 6-12 months but she lives for almost 2.5 years, so i felt like we had to mourn her death so many times in small bursts, so when she actually did pass it was like i had moved through the almost entire grieving process
First of all yes please for the choosing beggars episode. Second, I’m so grateful to kendahl for speaking so candidly about her experience with chronic illness and having a sick parent. I relate to both and it’s very difficult to explain to those who don’t experience those things.
My grandma just passed last week after a 6 month stressful and painful battle with cancer. I was devastated when I got the call she passed but I’m so relieved she’s not suffering anymore bc she truly was in a lot of pain and I’m so relieved for my grandpa as he was her main caregiver. Thank you for touching on that it’s so relatable but u feel so bad for feeling this relief.
I work from home full time and also feel anxious when I need to leave my house now. I fear I’m becoming agoraphobic though I love never needing to go to an office again. Especially with winter cold weather coming. I won’t leave my house for days- which probably isn’t that healthy 🤷🏼♀️
people used to stay home in the winter for months alone with their family and stuff, living in log cabins vibe, i feel like you could spend this time productively alone, and use it to reflect on how to spend your outside/social/warm time more intentionally 🖤
I have an BSEE and work full time as an electrical engineer and everyone at my company has a Masters or Bachelors and we do similar work...we NEEDED that schooling trust... that is B.S
I worked at Walmart when Covid began, I had already been there for three years at that point and I stayed for about another year and a half. After that it was the worst I’ve ever seen it. The only thing I can compare it to is that every single day was like the day before Christmas with the amount of people coming in and screaming over every little thing. I work in a library now, and I love it
my agoraphobia came back bc of the pandemic and i work a job that has WFH capabilities but also my psych told me i should still try to go into the office at least once if not more times a week so that i could kinda develop more resilience
So the real reason a lot of companies do this (not saying all but the majority) are for 2 reasons. They already have someone in mind to fill those positions (usually higher up in the corporate latter) but they can't legally just give it to that person. Depending on where you are every job title needs to be advertised to the public. This is the government's remedy to try and make it fairer for people to get higher positions but the companies have realised they don't have to make it fair and by giving out these completely unrealistic demands for "entry level jobs" they can't get filled because they found a "better candidate" and can't disclose any further information. Second reason is just to fuck around their own employees "guys i know you have huge work loads, we are trying to find a new candidate I promise" but never do but you cant complain legally because they are still "looking" Could also do with government numbers to make themselves look good. Its very easy to fake statistics by asking big corporations to put out fake jobs just to say there are so many vacant jobs companies are crying out for workers when in reality companies have no desire to hire anyone but rather just squeeze their existing employees out of free labour.
Amazing episode! Glad you talked about pandemic and death as someone who lost their grandpa to it. Would love it if you would make that episode on beggars, and maybe even the conservative one you mentioned at the end!
This is somewhere around the 1hr mark, but sarah said they believe most people with GEDs don't have a clean record, and that made me really sad. I have a GED, the people I was taking classes with were mainly immigrants (they were there to learn english too), teen moms, people who had to drop out to start working in their teen years to support their families, and a few people who were there to just get highschool behind them. That last category is where I fell into. You meet so many different people in those classes. I think its a massive exageration to say most people with GED's don't have a clean record. Please take this with an open mind, I love the podcast a lot, that comment just felt really outta pocket. TL:DR GED good 👍u were a lil outta pocket but ily
I felt the same way bc I have a GED, I was forced to drop out due to my health problems and lack of support. I get that it has a bad rap but I wish people would take the time to learn what it actually entails.
4:18 i love kendahl so much cause like she’s NOT fuckin dumb! but i totally get her where my brain immediately thinks of like the dumbest reasoning and then i’m like no that’s absolutely not correct
some dude SNEEZED INTO his pile of coins when i worked during covid. he paid for a $30 order in sneeze covered coins and i just had to cop that and count it, and hope i didn’t catch whatever he had. working during covid was actually wild as a fast food server, the amount of people who would tell me with a full chest they had covid,,,, whyy are you here then 😭😭
The intro about undertones, dude I'm a medical mystery or something cause I have green AND purple veins. The undertone cultists have an aneurysm any time I say that
Drove through Laguna Beach years ago and they had a huge banner stating the city was completely smoke free outside... If you Google it the only places ppl can smoke are in their house or car...
Job hunting was a nightmare before the pandemic. After the pandemic is down right hopeless. My partner loved cooking and wanted to be a chef. But working in the restaurant industry showed them how the industry does not care about the workers and will let them die to sell food
As someone currently getting an engineering degree, anyone who says that you only need 6 months to become an engineer (equivalent or whatever) is literally out of their gourd. There’s so many areas you need to be educated in that literally can’t even fit in that time of you tried lmao. Obviously everybody probably knows that but man I had to say it haha
I have to work in office 3 out of 5 days a week even though 6 out of 11 of my co workers are fully work from home and don’t even live in the same state 🙃
The pandemic was and still is one of the most frustrating things that has happened in our lifetime for me. I can't believe how much literally everything changed just because covid got politicized and it became an us vs them issue when it came to prevention and healthcare. I could see the Trump Administration fumbling it way before it got serious and I was unfortunately right. I feel as though I'll always have a burning hot scorching rage in the middle of my soul. And I feel like I'm going to hold onto that searing rage for the rest of my life. That being said, I've been desperately looking for a job now in relation to how the student loan debt payments are now starting up again. I'm kind of scared I won't be able to afford them. I'm accepting most jobs now, even badly paying ones which I feel like is the worst thing I could do at the moment. But I can't afford being unemployed right now. But at this part of my life it really is feeling like all we're given purpose for on this earth is to work then maybe die in some capacity later on. But definitely spend most of our time working while we're alive. And it is the worst feeling to think about. I think about it constantly. The worst part of it is is that all of these are social constructs. We don't have to have the money systems we have now! We don't have to work like how we work now! Everything is all made up! We made up these problems for ourselves to have! It's just utterly agonizing. Edit: Okay I sat with this comment longer and I also keep on thinking about how I've seen online posts from people saying that employers now use AI programs to sift through job applications and that a lot of applications may be wrongfully discarded because the AI program sucks at finding good quality profiles for actual human eyes to look at. I've seen it suggested that people should basically copy and paste or move around some key phrases in the job post to get the AI program to pick up on exact wording or phrases and that it helps get your application seen now. I haven't tried it yet, because I feel weird personally about copying words and I have anxiety about it, but it might be worth looking into if you find you haven't been getting any kind of interaction from employers for a long time. I feel like in this social climate, more and more people are starting to use AI programs to deal with their own personal burnout or to make work for themselves easier but it isn't a good solution to the working problem. It's a bandaid solution to something that needs major surgery.
Okay I had a (male) hiring manager at a dinky deli and I had bad period cramps and asked to leave my shift at this dinky deli early. He said ONLY if I came back with a doctors note. I go to the doctor, tell them I have period cramps, and they ask me to take a pregnancy test. 🤨⁉️I get the darn note and am back at work the next day. What a bozo
🥲 as someone with chronic illness / chronic pain, I appreciate this entire episode so so so much 🥹💓 This made me feel so SEEN, and UNDERSTOOD, I can't even properly put it into words. I feel like I need to watch this every time I feel down on myself about my disease/pain to remind myself, my pain is valid and only we know our bodies best 🫶🏼🧿
it's so bizarre to me that companies are like "no one wants to work" when they are either 1. not paying living wages, or 2. don't ever respond if they pay well 🥴
i'm really happy you are talking about the pandemic because i think at this point we've all convinced oursevles we're fine and we're not
this!!!! this!!!! 2023 has been bizarre because people are trying to hard to block out the recent past! and act like EVERYBODY wasnt just scared af & lowkey still is ❤️🩹
@riley8866 I can't even remember the pandemic years anymore lol my brain blocked it out
I mean the quarantine not pandemic bc it's still happening
My bestie has been with her job for 18 months. Earlier this year she got an offer from another company for higher pay. Her current job convinced her to stay. Today they laid her off because the company is in a slump. No severance, no warning, they totally screwed her.
I never trust when jobs say “we’re a family here” because that ends so fast.
okay but an episode on HOAs would be so great, i feel like i don’t truly understand them but i’m constantly hearing horror stories about being part of one, and i think you two would do a great job tackling the topic!
Usually they’re extremely mundane. Every neighborhood (3) I’ve lived in has has one and in 20 years I’ve only gotten like 1 letter and it was like “reminder to make sure your house numbers are visible”
My current one is $125/year and basically states you cannot have a fence over 6’
You cannot block visibility of signs and corners
That’s all 🤷🏼♀️
But I’ve heard the horror stories too and it’s always so confusing bc like I’ve never known someone irl who has encountered a bad HOA.
Now, for condos, HOA fees are like $200-$500/month which is inSANE but they do mow for you and take care of your roof and stuff but still, they’re making a nasty profit
GIVE US THE CHOOSING BEGGARS EPISODE PLEASE!!
I know Kendahl won't see this but when she talked about her dad's passing and how there is so much pain when someone is sick is basically exactly how it feels when someone you love is in active addiction and not willing to get help. My point in all this being I talk about her death in kind of a nonchalant way sometimes but it's because I had a decade of talking sadly about how much I wished she would just get better and almost pre-mourning the worst?

good luck!
Good Luck! I worked at a grocery store once it was pretty fun!
good luck dude!!
Good luck!!!
you've got this!!! I hope it goes well and it's what you want
PLEASE do an episode on class consciousness post-pandemic!
This! I got so excited when they mentioned that, I'd love to see a full episode on class consciousness ✨️
I’m 24 and my mom died from MS a year ago, she was sick ever since I was 5. I totally relate to Kendahl and my boyfriend and I were there when it happened

Pls do an episode on begging choosers it sounds so funny

Hope your cat is okay 🥺
You should do a choosing beggars episode
CHOOSINGBEGGARS episode requested!!!!!!!! Please!
What a bozo
