Trolling for Walleye Using Spinner Rigs - Tips for Using Crawler Harnesses on Lake Erie

  • We smoked the walleye on Lake Erie with crankbaits earlier in the day • Trolling Crankbaits fo... so we decided to switch to spinners. The crawler harnesses worked just as well as we had 3 or 4 walleye on at a time and achieved a limit within a half an hour.
    This early summer period is perfect for trolling spinner rigs to be able to get to the fish in the deeper and cooler Lake Erie water. I share a lot of tips for using crawler harnesses on Lake Erie. The most important is to slow down and be patient. I tend to use smaller blades from Silver Streak on Lake Erie

      Be very careful doing that. I do it now and then, but I don't like trolling alone and when I do, I make sure to be super careful and always hang on to something or stay down in the lower part of my boat when netting fish, etc. If you fall in while trolling on the Great Lakes you are probably not going to survive it. The boat keeps going and even if you have a life-jacket on, you aren't going to handle those water temps for very long. It seems like every couple years we see a story where a guy goes out alone and doesn't come back. They find the boat out of gas and in gear a couple days later. Jigging or casting alone is one thing. Trolling alone is another.

    Love a good spinner bite.Last trip got our limit of walleye and 25 sheephead that were hammering my spinners and doubling the rod and pulling drag like salmon would.

      Bigwater Fishing I think a video showing new guys how you set up your rods (braid, braid w/ leader, mono), reel calibration, how you run each program (in what order do you put lines out when running boards, jets, dipsys), what do you do when you are running 3+ boards/side and get a fish on an outside or middle board (do you run releases, reel the rest of the lines in close and then the board with the fish, drop the board back further and try and pull it inside of the rest). Also go a little further in depth on how you run inline weights. I know you are on the western basin, so it’s fairly shallow, but for us who have to fish deeper water this time of year between Cleveland and Erie (most fish are 40-55’ down in 65fow) I’d really like to know how you would target them. Is there ever a time or place for running downriggers for walleye in Erie? Lots of questions. I look forward to watching the videos you put out in the future. Hopefully some of these things will be addressed.

    I don't use trailer hooks,when they are swallowing your whole rig,a good sharp single hook is the way to go,and I use #6 hooks which are very small,but guess what,we land Steelheads on hooks smaller than a #12,playing a walleye takes patience and skill,small hooks are deadly !Fighting a walleye is a nice slow ride and enjoy every minute

    What tip do you have to keep spinner rigs from twisting the line while trolling...certain swivels, etc?

    • @Bigwaterfishing
      @Bigwaterfishing  4 роки тому +1

      I use a bead chain sinker...swivels on both ends of that are all u need

    • @slimshadycustoms
      @slimshadycustoms 2 роки тому

      It also helps to make sure your worm is straight. The top hook should be in the very tip of the crawler. I tie mine with 2 hooks, and the second hook usually goes in the collar of the worm or just behind it. I also add a ball-bearing swivel to the back of my in-line sinkers to make sure that it can rotate.

    Minnesota kid here. Just getting into trolling more with cranks and harnesses with boards. Couple of questions, since we can only use one line would you hold it or what would you do differently. Also do you strictly use 1 oz inlines or why and when do you switch to 2 oz?

    • @Bigwaterfishing
      @Bigwaterfishing  4 роки тому +1

      If u are using a planer board put it in a rod holder...if not u can hold it
      Faster you go and deeper you fish the heavier the weight you need to maintain depth

    • @slimshadycustoms
      @slimshadycustoms 2 роки тому +1

      Move to MI where we can run 3.... :). I go to heavier weights vs just going with longer leads for 3 reasons: 1) As the leads get longer, it is harder for me to know how deep they are running due to the line drag. 2) I don't like to have leads that are much longer than it is deep, otherwise you risk dragging the bottom as you are letting the board out. 3) With really long leads, it is much more likely that I will hook the inside boards as I am bringing in a fish from an outside or middle board. So if it is 30 feet deep and I am not getting deep enough with a 1 oz at 35 back, I will switch to a 2 or 3 oz and keep the leads the same length.

  • @steveon12
    @steveon12 4 роки тому +2

    How much line were you letting out and how deep were you fishing? I've heard ~1oz weight for every 10' depth, but that depends on how much line you let out too.

    • @Bigwaterfishing
      @Bigwaterfishing  4 роки тому

      Not a simple answer....speed and current really effect depth. Let them hit bottom for the depth and speed you are fishing and work backwards til you figure out diving depths for what u r doing

    • @shyman9023
      @shyman9023 2 роки тому

      That is a lot. I use the least I can and would say one half for every ten feet or less.

    • @slimshadycustoms
      @slimshadycustoms 2 роки тому +1

      It also depends on how fast you are going. A 1 oz in-line sinker will be roughly 1/3 of the way down as it is back at 1.2 - 1.4 mph. 30 feet back = 10 feet down. A 2 oz in-line sinker will be roughly 1/2 way down at those speeds. 30 feet back = 15 feet down. A 3 oz will be 2/3. 30 feet back = 20 feet down. If you are going 1.6 - 1.8 mph, then those ratios shift. A 1 oz will be 1/4, a 2 oz will be 1/3, etc. As your leads get much longer, they won't get quite to those ratios due to the extra line drag from the water. But those are good "rules of thumb" to start with. If I put my rod in my front rod holders, I can see them on the graph, so I know how far down they are running. I try not to have my lead lengths much longer than it is deep to keep them from dragging on the way out. So if it is 30 feet deep, I try to keep my leads no longer than 40 or 45. Any longer than that and I have to let them out super slow and speed up while doing it.

    Can you use a snap weight in place of a inline weight if needed? When fishing with crawler harness

    • @slimshadycustoms
      @slimshadycustoms 2 роки тому

      Yes, you can, but 90% of the time in-line sinkers are fine and much easier to use. Snap weights are good when it is really rough out, because you can separate the weight from the spinner and cut down on the up and down from the waves. They can also be good for your "down rods", because you can let out 50-60 feet of line and then attach the sinker, getting your baits further from the boat without a board. Otherwise, I use them when pulling cranks and I want to get the baits down deeper.

    why do you like using planter boards or not jets or dipsy

    • @slimshadycustoms
      @slimshadycustoms 2 роки тому

      I won't speak for him, but I will tell you why most of us use them. Boards allow us to spread out our baits, run more lines and get the baits much further from the boat. Many times the biggest walleyes will be up in the top 10 feet of the water column, even in very deep water. For example, I caught a 9+ lb walleye, 8 feet down over 65 feet of water a few summers ago in August on Erie. Those fish are going to scatter when the boat goes through, so if you aren't well out to the sides, you have no chance of catching them. Dipsey's and Jet divers are good for pulling spoons because we tend to troll those much faster and deeper. Dipseys will get your lines somewhat out to the sides (2 or 3 setting), however, we usually run Jets behind boards as well when pulling spoons. For harnesses, we are trolling slower, so in-line sinkers work better, IMO.

      @@joeholzman1271 Last fall on Erie, there were a couple outings where I was running my outside boards 200 feet from the boat and only 15 feet back (5 feet down). My middle boards were 150 and my inside board was 100 feet out. Even with those distances, most of the bites were on the outside board. The fish were up so high that we could only get them really far from the boat. My buddies joke that I run my boards so far out that I need an OH license for my outside board. :)
