There is a fairly easy rule to follow when buying an electric car: If it is an ICE (gas/diesel) car converted to electric, it is a compromise. You want a car that was built from the ground up as ELECTRIC.
Test drove this car today, AMG line. Though the overal feel is premium some buttons as well as the turn signal lever feel cheap. The adaptive cruise works well but can be a bit unpredictable. Lot of wind noise too. All in all a nice decent car, but taking the max range of 300km into account I think I'll wait for a bit.
Personally I quite like the GLA shape and would choose a diesel 4 wheel drive version over this electric version, I hardly ever venture into any big towns and there are no motorways in Mid Wales.
They should have just kept the design the same, like the bmw ix3, but the range needs to be improved, and Tesla’s leading the way with that. These traditional automakers need to step up their game on making electric cars
@@youraveragejoe1 I agree with you, but for a new company, they’re doing well, and when Tesla start building more and more factories, they can spend more money on Quality Control. Hopefully it gets better with Teslas built in Germany
The range is fine IMO. The EQA will have a bigger battery version later this year with a similar range compared to the tesla model Y. I agree more range would always be better but the carwow "range test" is actually pretty bad. He just drives a few miles and calculates the rest. EVs tend to heat up the cabin, the battery etc. and use much more energy early on. If you drive longer it would get easly over 200 miles and not only the 180 he said.
Mercedes should’ve been developing a new EV chassis years ago. These reengineered ICE vehicles converted to EVs just don’t ever work that well. Front wheel drive is disastrous in an EV because the weight is normally more evenly distributed than in an ICE car. That results in the inability to put the power down on the front wheels as the weight transfers to the rear under acceleration. A ICE FWD car at least has the heavy engine sitting over the drive wheels. An EV only has its electric motor, but all the heavy batteries are behind the drive wheels. That’s why VW went RWD with their new MEB platform. The VW ID.4 is a MUCH BETTER alternative. Not only is it larger, but it will offer more range and being RWD or AWD it won’t be susceptible to doing smoky burnouts every time you go to accelerate. Watch the Kia Niro and Hyundai Kona for examples of what FWD on an EV is like… it isn’t pretty. I prefer Tesla’s decision to make the brake pedal only do friction brakes instead of trying to blend regen and friction brakes like most other automakers do. I rarely have to even use the brakes on my Model 3 Performance because the regen when you let off the accelerator is enough for all but the most aggressive stops. Mercedes’ steering assist system sucks, at least it does on my mother’s 2018 E400. It struggles to read lane markings, will follow the car in front of you onto off ramps if you don’t take over, and it frequently disengages itself with no warning. On the Tesla steering assist is on until you turn it off and if there’s some situation it can’t handle it will visually and audibly alert you. All the Mercedes does is show a green steering wheel on the HUD when it’s working and if it can’t see the lane markings it briefly turns orange and then white. If you’re not glued to that little steering wheel icon you won’t know it’s turning itself on and off. The other bad thing is Mercedes refuses to do updates for things like the driver assistance tech. It’s just as bad today as it was then, because there’s no OTA updates for things like that. Tesla is constantly beaming updates to the car.
Apparently, Mercedes was designing the second A-class (W169) with some sort of electrification in mind. There was a small run of them released as BEV in cooperation with Tesla Motors, of all things. The car still has a double floor in D and petrol verions (in which it was supposed to have the traction batteries), only in real life it only has the 12V battery in the floor. Yeah, ask me how I know... Better still, ask my mom. And - the car doesn't have any door sills, and the placement of engine, and the engine itself, is massively over-engineered. Getting to belts and generator is however, a nightmare - only on a lift. Anyway. Mercs, as dumb as it might sound, are sometimes underappreciated.
I quite like this car, but black and with extra glossy exterior details. White and grey doesn't do justice for this shape. Thanks for the video btw! You are the best car reviewer out there. Fun, smart, sexy and sharp ;) Cheers!

The video is 14:33 long. You haven't even watched it yet. And you commented: loved the vid.
@@vencelzajtai6944 I actually watched the whole thing
@@mr_mistakesr.4456 in under 2 minutes??
@@vencelzajtai6944 you do know that for some other countries the video comes early right
This is my favorite Mercedes of all the time! Nice video!
The newer mercs really looking ugly in general. The older ones from 2007-2014 where beasts
Personally I quite like the GLA shape and would choose a diesel 4 wheel drive version over this electric version, I hardly ever venture into any big towns and there are no motorways in Mid Wales.
-Building an electric SUV which has literally the aerodynamics of an cupboard
-Lets put extra covers on the alloy wheels, it will improve air flow 🤣
Thus why practical Electric Cars should be Sport Wagons. Sleek and Low.
Hlo I just wanna say you are doing a great work carwow.

Wow - amazing : You found an Ecotricity charger that was working 😆
It looks better than expected. Design is going in the right direction, but isn't there yet. Probably perfect for its target market, which isn't me
designer: "so how much do you want to signify that this eqa is an electric gla?"
mercedes: " *B L U E!* "
I was quite impressed by the GLB I inspected. Wouldn't mind an EQB as well for that extra room.
They should have just kept the design the same, like the bmw ix3, but the range needs to be improved, and Tesla’s leading the way with that. These traditional automakers need to step up their game on making electric cars
True, but then you have to deal with Tesla’s quality control issues
@@youraveragejoe1 I agree with you, but for a new company, they’re doing well, and when Tesla start building more and more factories, they can spend more money on Quality Control. Hopefully it gets better with Teslas built in Germany
Wait for the EQS, that's the true flagship merc electric car. New platform, new exclusive EQ interior, and rumoured 450 miles range.
Next drag race new golf r vs rs3 vs a45 .....I can't wait Matt
Love that design.
Going for the numba too was gold
The more EV reviews I see, the less I want one.😖 (apart from the Taycans)
💖
I think the etron Looks Great too
So nice! Lovely EQA and the GLA is wonderful and one of the most reliable Benz
14:05 MB money truck left the chat!
No day time running lights?
It shows runnings lights several times
2:50 thanks Mat! now i cannot unsee it
Who needs lights when you’re driving right mat?
The part for the untrained eye was funny 🤣🤣. Made my day even better

I am indecisive between this one and tesla 3, which one would you choose?
That thing is seriously hideous. I hate the gla as it is, but this is definitely worse. 🤮🤮🤮
Im so glad you didnt break the mercedes this time
"Blue stitching.." Absolutely hilarious. I bet after your every car review some executive somewhere is like "oh mat here he goes again!🤪🤪"
It’s very exclusive and to be honest the gla is like the eqa but electric still very cool
It’s because they are the same car just they just took out the engine and fuel tank and added a motor and a battery
Yea
I'm the first to look, nice car
Feels like there is too much compromise because Mercedes didn't choose to have dedicated EV platforms, like with the EQC.
