      The mosquitos can be really intense when camping near water during summer.
      Sometimes a slight breeze is enough to blow them Out of the sky as they are not the best aviators of the insect world.
      Thanks for watching 👍🏻

    Interesting that your dog loves to ride along. TENT SUGGESTION: Tarptent makes all their double wall tents so the inner tent can always remain attached to the inside of the rain fly. This keeps it dry when setting up or taking it down in the rain or wet snow a few some other tent makers do this as well. I have had 5 Tarptents over the years and they were all very high quality and have Henry Shires excellent design features.
    TARP TIP: on the support parador about 1 foot from the upper end of the tarp tie a short (6") cord so it hangs down. Rainwill drip down off it instead of running odwn under your tarp and on you.

    I’ve seen it where they put a basket or some type of crate on the back behind the seat for the dog to sit in and you could put all your gear on the trailer. You’d both be more comfortable and still get there fine. Also if your going to leash them to the trailer or wherever on the bike, you should do a harness instead of on the neck. Just a thought.

      If you go for a trailer like mine the biggest challenge is to get over that nervous stage of looking back to check on your dog. Ideally when towing your best friend you want both eyes focused on the road/trail ahead. It's the reason why I didn't fit a mirror on my bike.

      Thanks for the message!
      The trailer is a Burley Flatbed and I've owned it for a year and a half now.
      It's done 500km with me on and off road, solidly built and I would buy it again in a heartbeat.
      I've also used the trailer for towing goods and even tested the 45kg (100lb) maximum load and found no issues.
      I don't find the trailer design too wide either and find it easy to manouve through dense woodland trails. It does like to bounce around a bit on the rough stuff when you're towing light but that doesn't bother me much at all.
      No rattling noise, no noticeable rolling resistance and it takes only a few seconds to hook up/unhook.
      There is also a fat tyre conversation kit available that makes towing on snow sand or gravel a lot easier, but I can't vouch for that personally but it's something I'm eager to try.
      Two thumbs up for me

      I'm sorry to hear about your Cruiser being stolen. I've had only one bike stolen in my life and remember vividly that sick feeling in my stomach seeing my broken chain on the ground where my bike was secured.
      The experience alone taught me the importance of bicycle security and how vulnerable to failure any kind of lock on the market can be to a sophisticated thief.
      I invested heavily on three different locks and never leave my E-Bike out of eyeshot after my experience.
      I lost a lot of nonchalance having a bike stolen but gained a lot of knowledge and insight on bike theft and opportunist bicycle thieves as compensation.

      @@TheNorthOutdoorsUK it's actually humbling to be there, and because it's Ireland you're never actually in any real danger unless you do something stupid or come across a stag in mating season. I've never actually done winter camping, it's a next step up for me, I've started my preparations tonight actually, just noting really where things are. I'll have a tent and my supplies just incase but I wanted to build a little camp from tarp and paracord, I've my fire tin ready and my knife sharp, but it's a bit of a microclimate down there and it could be monsoon level rains so I'll be prepared for all weather. It's Ireland so I'm pretty much ready for rain 90% of the time anyway. But I'll be bringing some dry logs with me just incase. It's more for the scenery this time, I'll bring less stuff when I'm more experienced, no point suffering when I don't need to.

I have subscribed and looking forward to watching more of your adventures. I just had one concern about the dog getting some dirt or gravel thrown up in his eyes from the tyre maybe you could do with a full mud guard just a thought. This was one of the best solo camps adventures I have seen in a while this is what life is all about getting out and about. Keep up the great work.

    • @TheNorthOutdoorsUK
      @TheNorthOutdoorsUK  3 роки тому +1

      Hi David,
      Thanks for expressing concern regarding the gravel/dirt hazzard. It is something I'm aware of, has been on my mind for some time and have been keeping an eye on during the last couple of rides.
      I did a polystyrene shield test a few months ago at 25mph on gravel and wet terrain to see where the spray is going and results showed the average target point to be just under the horizontal trailer frame. Despite the knowledge gained it still didn't fill me with confidence.
      One solution I thought of was to attach a plexiglass motorcycle windshield to the trailer frame but I think a more elegant solution would be your suggestion which is a full mud guard or to extend the existing ones in some way or other.
      Glad you're enjoying the content, I'm out filming again on the weekend so the next video should be uploaded on Sunday Evening.

    Very nice video and it looks like you and your dog had a good time. I'm surprised that your battery only lasts 50 km. I just converted my high performance touring bike with an electric wheel. I've taken it on two rides. One ride was 48 km and the other was 65 km. In the first case, I mostly used the assist for large, steep hills and I only used about 15% of the battery. In the second case, I did the same on the first half, but then used the assist to keep my average speed to 32 km/hr all the way home. This time it used about 25% of the battery. I have a 48V, 500W motor and a 17.5 AH battery. I only had one pannier with some tools and repair supplies in it, so that would explain part of it. I assume you have a smaller battery. I'm hoping the extra weight doesn't make that much difference. I don't want to carry two batteries touring.

    • @TheNorthOutdoorsUK
      @TheNorthOutdoorsUK  2 роки тому +3

      There are so many factors that affect the range of an E-Bike, hardware, depleted cycle count, riding style, payload, environment..
      My bike manufacturer claims a maximum potential range of 96km with the 48V 17.5Ah batteries on pedal-assist mode.
      To haul the weight of the trailer, an adult dog, camping gear and 4 litres of water over 50km with no time in between for the battery and motor to cool down is impressive.
      Also worth noting is that my bike has an unladen weight of 32kg, not the lightest of frames but can withstand a lot of punishment and a payload capacity of 160kg.
      Since this trip I have upgraded to a 52 tooth front sprocket which has eliminated a lot of the ghost pedalling I encountered over 25kph and really helps the motor out.
      As for the second battery, I agree it is a bulky luxury for most but I rarely ride light and it is always good to rely on for those longer journeys.
      Thanks for watching!

  • @alafenetre81
    @alafenetre81 3 роки тому +2

    Nice and inspiring video, and a happy dog :-) Subscribed. I've just started bike touring with a conventional bike but I'm contemplating buying an e-bike. How do you recharge the battery on a camping tour like that? Can the weight of such a bike be a problem in some situations?

    • @TheNorthOutdoorsUK
      @TheNorthOutdoorsUK  3 роки тому +5

      Thanks for the sub! 👍🏻 If you're planning to tow a lot of weight like I do then torque is an important factor for E-bike touring. My bike has a 750w motor with 80nm of torque and performs very well on long distances and hills.
      As for the battery Dilemma, I extended my range by buying an identical backup battery. This would give me a potential unladen range of 160km.
      If I wanted to venture any further I would look in to booking a hotel/hostel for mains charging to continue for an extra 160km or the return journey.
      A full charge for one E-bike battery would take around 8 hours, so an overnighter in a hotel or dedicated camping ground with mains supply makes the most sense.
      I entertained the idea of solar charging my batteries with a portable panel and controller but this would be impractical, costly, added weight and the charging times would be rediculously long.
      Once you are familiar with an E-bike you learn it's potential range and can estimate how to get the most out of a bike tour.
      My method so far works best for me and I really don't mind the added weight whatsoever.
      As for the weight of the bike: If it's heavy, it's probably likely to perform well carrying a lot of gear. My frame has a payload capacity of 160 kilos which makes it a suitable and comfortable touring bike.
      The weight affects performance only slightly but the motor is there to assist me on the tougher climbs.
      Thanks for watching

      Firstly, Child trailers are specifically designed for children's safety in mind and usually have a seat or are shaped for upright position riding.
      I assume my dog feels more safer, confident and comfortable riding in a lying down position for 3 reasons:
      1: lower centre of gravity (stability)
      2: larger surface area (grip)
      3: relaxed position (comfort)
      My Burley flatbed trailer offers all three of these options and since my dog never really took to crate training, I believe he feels more comfortable with the open design. I want him to feel like he has the opportunity to exit the trailer should he feel the need.
      My dog is secured with a custom leash attatched from the rear of the trailer frame to prevent him sliding forward during braking or in the event of a fall.
      This is by no means safe and an accident with any type of trailer would be unsafe to some degree, however I feel I have the right balance of functionality and safety to suit both our needs.
      As for stowage, I get all my camping gear and more safely loaded in my panniers and dry bags so I don't feel the need for more space for this purpose.
      On the whole, it's all about the trust I have in my dog to stay in the trailer and his trust in me to ride responsibly. The trust I have in the Burley brand to withstand long distances without coming apart which they do excellently in my experience. And lastly, it's my personal preferred way to travel; the right way for me but won't be for everybody.
      It's just the way we like to roll 🤙🏼

    Why such a cheap bike

      Why buy a golden spoon when a stainless steel one does the same job for a lot less money?
      Quite simply, I like the bike and cheap bikes are easy to replace/maintain. I'm in to my second year of heavy use and hard riding on all terrains and the bike still delivers on performance and value for money, I'd buy another in a heartbeat.
