66... and still crazy about bike travel

- Just like the previous film, this one is also about the beauty and simplicity of bike travel, probing for the drive behind this kind of adventures, and with a wink to the drive behind the lives of the people crossing my path.
The basis of the story into which all this is woven, is my recent 7-week bike journey in June/July 2023 out of Donauwörth, Germany, through a corner of Austria, and on into Czechia and Slovakia. And from there all the way back to Antwerp (3.335 km).
Just like the previous film this one also follows more or less the chronology of the journey, but is not a travel report as such, rather a kaleidoscope of impressions and observations along the road and of interesting encounters with other people.

80 and still cycling long distance... then you're my type of person too, mate! 👍Because I aim to get where you are, and beyond... Keep riding and enjoying...! 😊
This will be me, dead in my tent of old age LOL
I rode my bike from Germany to Portugal as a woman alone in the age of 62! 😊 And I'll do more of that for sure!
Love it!!!
@@65andbackonthebike namaste 🙏 and salute from nepal 🇳🇵
72 and riding more than ever! I never feel as alive as I do out on the trails. What a long, strange trip it continues to be! Be Well, my graybeard friends, and Prosper!
Good on you, my friend. Keep going and enjoying...! 🙏😊
Imagine my surprise to open UA-cam and see your video come up . I so liked your first one so had to sit down and watch this non stop . What a wonderful story teller you are and I always like your interaction with people you meet along the way . Plus us (old people ) can so relate to you . I am now 80 yrs .young and still riding as much as possible , got 2,500 miles so far this year . The one thing I remember from your first video was to take time to make love to Mother Earth and I try every ride . Keep the wheels turning .
Thank you, Robert ! It's a great pleasure for me to make these films and be inspiring to others - and especially the older generation - to keep on 'turning those wheels', to stay healthy and young of heart, and to not lose the drive to be alive. Keep on riding, brother ! And we'll see us again next year with another film... 😊
I was once asked why I ride bikes everywhere. I thought for a minute or so and replied "Because it brings joy."
Exactly! Keep on harvesting that joy, brother! 😊
I was asked when I was in my 40's why am I still riding a bicycle, 20+ years on, I'm still riding and loving it even more!

It brings health and freedom which means joy and happiness.
I’m 68 and have done two long distance trips in the last couple of years and plan on a bunch more.
Good on you, Jeff ! Enjoy them as if you were 25 ! 😊
High praise for your capturing nature sounds and storytelling. Truly one of the finest bike packing videos I’ve seen.
Thank you, David ! It's a great pleasure for me to make these films. 😊
Only 66 years young. Keep pedaling man! 💪😎
🙏
Super fun. I'm 77 and this year I cycled 3,567km around Spain, I especially love the mountains in Northern Spain and Asturias and Galicia. Next year I already have planned. Last year I met a couple from Belgium and they were 82 and still cycling! It's a lovely way to travel and find the Peace in God's Creation. God Bless and happy travels.
Couldn't agree more, Gerald ! 😊 Respect for what you are doing ! 👍 Where do you go next year ?
Both are respectful people to enjoy their life truely. I will do like you.
Here I am at age 77 and feeling in better shape when I was 17. Lost the car 10 years ago. I do not miss it. My rides are all day adventures. Been retired for 14 years now and enjoying every minute of it. Keep riding.
Nice to hear, John! 👍 Keep going!
Hello, great I’m 64 and I have found my Love bicycle tours. We are old men but we never give up
Let's never give up indeed, Josef. 👍But I don't consider myself 'old', just more experienced 😅
Just came across your channel! I turn 70 in a few days and we are leaving in May to cycle across the US again!
Sounds great, Tom ! Happy travels ! 🙏
I think I've just discovered the best channel on UA-cam. Chapeau!
Wow, what a huge compliment !! Thank you, David !! 😀
Hello, Sir. I think that you are amazing. I am about to turn 58 years old and I just started riding a bike. You are very inspiring to me. I am going to keep riding and maybe one day I will travel by bike. As for now I have just begun riding and beginning to strengthen my body. I'm so glad that your video came up. Thank you for sharing. You're awesome!
Thank you, Mariah ! I feel honoured by your words. 🙏Keep on riding that bike, and as you reap the benefits of it, the joy, the sense of freedom, the greater horizon, I'm sure you will be inspiring to others as well. 👍😊
What a joy it was to watch your bike journey, I smiled for 54 minutes. We experienced Germany this year and enjoyed the cycling along with the beer gardens and bretzels, it’s very different than the USA. You showed what’s important in life which is doing what you love, good food, friendships, and nature. Thank you for making this video
My absolute pleasure, Terry ! 😊👍
Amazing! I thought I would watch 10 minutes, and ended watching (and rewatching) the whole video. Apart from the outstanding countryside and intriguing narrative, this video is so well-edited and compiled. I have no idea how one would even do this. Instant like and subscribe. Many blessings for the future, Eddy!
Loved it! Had a smile on my face watching this. I'm 69 and still go off cycling with my tent. But not done an epic ride like this, maybe one day. You are an inspiration!
Thank you, Ken ! Keep riding mate ! 👍
Hi Eddy. Thank you for another inspiring film. May your wheels forever turn beneath you. Take care.
Thank you, Adrian ! 😊
What an amazing video - slowly breathing the world in your own rhythm. Really delicious for my eyes, ears and soul. Thank you!
Thank you ! Glad you enjoyed watching 😊
Hello, I'm 63 and grew up in England, I had my first bike aged 10 and have loved cycling ever since.
I now live in Northern California and retired at 62 after having a stroke.
I used my bike to aid in my recovery, and it's working wonders.
I have regular bikes and last year also got an electric bike.
I hope I'll be able to keep riding for many years to come.
It really is a wonderful feeling to be out on bike exploring and enjoying the scenery and the health benefits cycling brings.
Loved this video and will watch your first one next.
Thankyou.
Good on you, Mark. Wishing you many more years of enjoying the bike and the benefits that it brings. 👍
Thank you soooo much for sharing with this 70 year old cyclist from Maine, USA!
You're welcome, brother! It's my pleasure. 🙏
It's so nice to see real people living thier dreams, great ride out and don't ever stop.
Thanks Simon! No intention to stop whatsoever, as long as the body doesn't fall apart... 😄
I got doctor for you . Can maintain or rejuvenate knees and joints. Treat arthritis. Own blood vitamins and oxygen. Keep going . Lol.
PERFECT!
This IS bikepacking!
Thank you ! 😊
You have one of the best videos on UA-cam with a real to life love affair with a bicycle and adventures to ride to new places. 👍👍
Thanks, Luigi ! 😊
Respect "Simplicity is an advanced course"😊
Thank you ! 🙏
Been taking bike tours since 2019. I'm about to be 70 and still have plans. In 2021 I biked 2,000 miles form Buffalo NY to New Mexico. I met a lot of 60 year olds on bike tours. It's the last chance dance at our age. It kicks my butt, but it makes me feel alive and healthy. I love to find picnic shelters for the night. They are the best free hotels. Waking up in a tent in the woods is a wonderful feeling.
I agree totally ! Keep on riding, brother ! 👍
....very nice trip,thank you !
Thank you, Istvan ! 😊
Another wonderful adventure … thank you! As it happens I’m also 66, retired and so glad I rediscovered cycling! So refreshing to hear your easy going philosophical narration. A great inspiration for me as I continue the road cycling adventures that I began back in pandemic year one. Alas, I had a bicycle crash five weeks ago … only one more week before the cast comes off my broken hand and I can start riding again. Safe travels! PS: Beer, ice cream and Hazelnut spread … who knew! 🚴♂️🙂
Thank you ! Wishing you a good recovery and enjoyable rides... 😊
I’m sorry to hear of your accident but can I just say it takes a good while before your hand will be strong enough to allow you to put pressure on it enough to ride. You will experience a lot of pain so go carefully and give yourself a good 6 months. Sad but true.
@@lindseymyles5790 Thanks! Cast came off after six weeks … bones healed OK. Turns out that was the easy part. What I did not see coming was all the mobility and strength issues. Doing lots of physio but starting to believe that it will be at least six months before I’m back to normal! Who knew. Had a few rides recently that went well and have just started Zwifting … looking forward to getting back on the road next spring.
I am happy that I came across you and your journey, I have mixed feelings, one of sadness because it has been seven years or so! since I did some bicycle touring in Europe. I miss it so much, and now you have given me inspiration to get off my backside and pack my old tourer to the continent once more. I am 69 years of age but I know I can still tour.
The other feeling is that your story has also made me happy and I find some parts very comical, especially at 19 minutes, with all those tractors whizzing by in the background, sort of like a motorway.
Thanks for giving me the impetuous to get back in the saddle,
Michael Thompson
England.
Hey Michael, it makes me happy that I have inspired you to go bike touring again! I'm sure that you will still be able to do it and make up for those 7 'lost' years. I bet that from the first day onwards it will be so familiar that it will feel like it was only 7 months instead of 7 years 😊 Go for it, brother! And enjoy...! 👍
Hello Eddy. I am writing to congratulate you on your trip and your desire to share it. I liked your style of travel, the simplicity of those places and their people. Also the video is very inspiring.
I have in mind to do something similar in the region where I live and then who knows, continue to many more places.
I'll be on the lookout for a new video of your adventures!
I send you a big hug from the Pamps of Argentina.
Thank you, Franco ! 🙏I'd say go for it, brother, and let yourself be surprised by whatever such an adventure brings. Cheers mate ! 😊
Hi Eddy, loved your first video and this one also. It was a great surprise to see this pop up on UA-cam. In between your two videos I was diagnosed with cancer but was determined to keep riding even through the rough times. So far the outcome has been very good and I am extremely grateful. I would encourage everyone our age (I'm 69) to watch your videos and keep riding a bike, it just might save your life besides being a complete joy! Thank you Eddy!
My pleasure, Doug ! May riding the bike have its healing effect on you. I wish you a complete recovery ! Blessings, brother ! 🙏
Truly inspiring, looking forward to your next adventure
Thanks mate ! 😊
This video is so peaceful and relaxing, I like your laid back character, and that you are not making your trip about getting as far as possible within one day and rushing through it but are enjoying places around you, taking time to have small talks with fellow travellers and locals, I wish to be like you when I get to your age! I will try it even now- enjoying life for what it is, staying positive and peaceful. Thank you for inspiration and this beautiful video :)
Thank you for your lovely comment, Kat ! And yes, no need to wait until you get to my age to express the best version of yourself. 😊 Blessings to you 🙏
massivley inspiring, im 44 and sometimes think maybe ive left it too late
It's never too late, Graham. Just rekindle, and you'll be surprised ! 😃
Some people have the ability and knowledge to stay young even as the body ages. Sadly most never have the desire to learn this. With all the negativity in the world today, it’s inspiring to see those who have the keys to life.
Thank you for sharing this wisdom and your journeys for us to share.
With great pleasure, Rob ! And hold on to those keys...! 😀
Wise words.
You sir, embody the very open-hearted character we all so want to be. I am grateful for your thoughts and having the presence to capture some of them via your bicyclette. Safe journeys. Gary from Ontario Canada.
Thank you, Gary ! I feel very honoured by your words. 🙏 I do have my flaws though... 😄
Hey, what a wonderful trip, what a beautiful film.
Kind regards from Poland👋
Thanks, bro ! 😊👍
What a fantastic video Eddy - you are clearly one of life's good guys, and that shone through in this wonderful film. I discovered bike touring a few years ago and have been on many short trips in Europe since then - I often wish I had started when I was younger, but I'm only 40 this year so hopefully I have many more years of good health ahead of me to explore more countries!
I hope I bump into you on the road one day - I can tell we would get on well. You're a bit of a kindred spirit I think 😄
Thanks Joe ! Well, at 40 you have still sooooo many years in front of you. See you somewhere on the road, mate ! 😊
you are great inspiration for me ... and I am 55 and still crazy about bike travel 😄
Thanks, mate ! Enjoy your future bike trips ! 😊
👋 ❤ One of the best cycling adventures I’ve seen from a special man … wish you best with further adventures on your way … You confirm my belief that the future is in the present 💝 👀 moment
Thank you, Barry ! 👍
What an amazing journey! And what a privilege for us to share this experience with you - thank you for sharing it. You're not at all crazy, quite the opposite I think. I hope I can do something similar some time. My daughter lives in Slovakia and it's a dream of mine to cycle there from the UK. Now time to watch your earlier video! I'll also check out your son's channel too.
Thanks, mate ! I can recommend cycling all the way to Slovakia. Some beautiful cyclings paths to discover throughout Europe going into that direction... 😊
Eddy you inspire me too. I live in the center of Canada. I bike almost daily from spring thru fall and then comes winter which slows me down but I am determined to bike as long as the roads are not icy or snow covered. I also enjoy meeting people and and stay healthy. I’m 72 and started cycling at 64. I like your videos a lot.
Thank you, Rosella ! Good on you for being on the bike so often (more often than I am really!) Let's keep those wheels turning, sister...! 🙏
Lovely video, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you very much. 67 ... AND STILL CRAZY ABOUT THE ROAD is in my UA-cam notify list. Very inspirational. Again, thanks.
Thank you, Chris ! And "67... AND SOMETHING..." definitely coming up next year ! 😀👍
You must be crazy ... because I am crazy too (67 now, still bicycle touring and camping too)
...and life is so beautiful this way, isn't it? Enjoy the touring, Inge! 😊
What a wonderful adventure ... thank you for sharing w us !
My pleasure, Michael. Thanks for watching ! 😊
Oh mister you gain all my admiration and full respect, watching you i see myself at your age, now I'm 42 ,one year ago i found that I like to do bike touring, I done three travels here in UK and I'm planning for next year to do London-Istanbul by bicycle 🚲 ❤stay safe, enjoy your beautiful trips ♥️👋
Thank you, Robert ! Wishing you fantastic experiences on your way to Istanbul next year ! 👍
@65andbackonthebike thank you sir 🙏 ♥️🙌
Hai Eddy, heel erg genoten van je mooie en rustige video! Ooit in de buurt van Aalsmeer/Amstelveen...je bent altijd welkom.
Dank je wel, Remco ! 😊👍
What a treasure of a video! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you, Jürgen ! My pleasure. 😊
Bravo! So happy you shared your story with us. Looking forward to more!
Thank you brother! A real pleasure for me to do this and more is certainly coming... Let's keep on rolling hey! 😃👍
You live a truly beautiful life to the fullest. As you say, "follow your heart." Looks as if you're living those words. You also know how to make a great 54 minute travel journey film.
That's indeed so, Starry Night Sky, following my heart throughout my life has made me make quite decisive choices in my life, none of which I have ever regretted. My bike travels and consequent films are a reflection of this, which is hopefully inspiring to many... 😊
What a brilliant, life enhancing video. Thank you for sharing it, with amongst many others, this 66 year old cyclist! Inspirational.
Thank you, John ! 😊
So inspiring Eddy, wonderful films with great narration. I look forward to your next journey as I contemplate the pilgrim seed you've sown in my travel garden.....
You're an inspiration. I will do it a bike packing Europe tour too. God bless you paths! Ana from Brazil
Thank you, Ana ! And good luck on your European tour ! 👍
Just found your channel.Great video! What an adventure. I'm also 66 and still love cycling, hiking and long distance swimming. For me it started in Germany in 1975 when I discovered Volks marching with old people in theirs 50's and 60's lol.The German people took me in and showed me what life was all about. I can't tell you how love I have for the them and their country. I try to go back as often as I can. Too many people our age just kind of give up so it's great to see people like you out there really living life! God Bless from Northern California USA
Yes indeed, too many people our age fall in the trap of convincing themselves they are too old for any action. And that's like choosing a shortcut to the 'exit' really. What a shame, isn't it? Thanks for watching ! 😊
Yo are wonderful....I am excited on your video...and it inspires me and giving hope to my future age . I am now in 53 and doing cycling last 7 years...🥰🥰😆
Thank you, brother ! Keep riding. 👍 Age is all very relative. 😊
It was my Sunday afternoon relaxing time at home, nice and silent with a cup of mushroom coffee in my hand, looking for something worth watching, I saw the title on UA-cam, and it caught my attention, I watched the entire video… love it. About age is just a number, your heart is ticking and your mind wanders, don’t we all? But you have the right attitude and your spirit in the right direction. Keep going as long as you can while you can. Thank you for sharing your video, Is wonderful and very inspiring.
Thank you, Werner. Glad I could contribute to a nice Sunday afternoon for you. 😊 Maybe I might make another film called "Age... one of the great mysteries of Life" 😀
Thank you for this wonderful video Eddy. Such a pleasure to see these far away (from me) and beautiful landscapes and peoplescapes from your cyclist perspective. I enjoyed very much. Alex, California USA
My pleasure, Alex. Glad you have enjoyed it. Thanks for watching ! 😊
thank you sooo much Eddy...you are awesome...God bless
Thank you, Umberto. 🙏
Ik vind het leuk wat je doet. Ook ses-en-sestig, en ook en fietser mijn hele leven.
All those trucks using what appears to be just a cycle path!
Thanks William. Keep on riding, brother! 😊
Congratulations Eddy for your adventurous spirit. you Transmit joy and simplicity, calmly appreciating the beautiful things in life. It doesn't matter the age, but the path to be taken in peace and harmony with nature. Greetings from Brazil. I'm 75 and still enjoy my motorcycle rides.
Thanks bro ! Keep on rolling... 😃👍
Very inspiring,I'm 68 & will keep pedaling til I plotz!!Great advice,to follow our ❤! Happy trails friend!😉👋
Thank you ! You too enjoy your travels ! 👍🙏
Thouroughly enjoyed watching your videos eddy, looking forward to seeing more in the future. Thank you from wales uk.
Thank you, Deano. More coming after my next summer ride... 😊
At 63 sometimes I think I’ve missed the starting gun with my riding, but need to think again. What a wonderful journey, very inspirational. Bike-touring is challenging in Australia where I live, due to the distances involved and heat, but who knows, maybe one day I will get to experience the luxury of riding in Europe!
Never too late to start riding, Kathleen. And I wouldn't disqualify Australia for it. I've cycled almost 10.000km there, half of which between Perth and Melbourne, and I have good memories about it. Although that was 25 years ago and I might have forgotten about the tough bits. Don't know if I would still appreciate it now at my age, although I love deserts, the Outback, the vast open spaces where the roads are quiet... and I admit I'm thouroughly enjoying the comforts of the European bike infrastructures. Blessings! 🙏
Thank you. I’m 76 and recovering from a torn tendon. This is what I need to hear.
I wish you a smooth recovery, Gary ! And many enjoyable miles on the bike ! 😊🙏
Bro, absolutely Brilliant..very inspirational indeed
Thank you, Carl ! 👍😊
Nice video. I like the respect you show the country and the simple living people you meet along the way.
Thanks, Mick ! 😊👍
Thank you Eddy for this awesome account of your bike travels. I like that you revel in the simplicity of bike touring and acknowledge how summer heat and riding hills affect you. I like how you travel solo slowly and quietly, walk up hills, are open to what the Universe provides, and are comfortable not knowing where you'll sleep at night. For me this is the essence of bike touring! Since 2014, I have been touring as you and Flavius do to many countries where I have met wonderful and kind people whose language I do not speak. I am 77 and crazy in love with bike touring. Bon voyage Eddy!
So it looks like we're kindred spirits as bike tourers. Good on you, mate! Wishing you many more wonderful trips. And I hope I will still go full power when I'll be your age! 👍🙏
I am 69 and still on the bike.
More or less the way you do it.
Good on you, Heinz! Keep on rolling! 😊👍
Fantastic ride and video, so inspiring! Many thank for posting, and RIDE ON Eddie!!
Thank you, Carsten ! 😊
Love watching your clips as myself a "dormant" bike tourist currently. I am like your friend who says since he had his first child the traveling sort of went on hold. Seeing you doing at 65 gives me inspiration👍
Thank you Chris. Why not 'wake up' and relive the joy of biking...? Keeps you young of body and heart. 😊
Loved your videos, brilliant...and your sons too
Thanks for watching ! 😊
love this channel... great adventure... nice sceneries along the way... and most of all story that comes along with it... eagerly waiting for your next pilgrim....
Thank you, Melvin ! Next film definitely coming after my next bike ride this summer. 😊

Thank you, James ! That's exactly my phylosophie as well. So let's keep on riding... 👍
Cheers. Keep it going.
Lucky life
So im watching another great Eddie adventure this morning and the scene of you getting hosed down in your skivies almost made me spit my coffee across the room. Im still laughing my ass off 😅😅😅.
Always remember, adventure is the elixer that feeds the fountain of youth. Thanks for sharing and wind to your back, and sun in your face.
"Adventure is the elixir that feeds the fountain of youth"... Well said, Tim! 👍I guess that qualifies me to reach 100 years, at which age I intend to still be making a bike touring film every year...! So you've been warned for next time you see a new film of mine appear...: make sure you will have finished your coffee before pushing that play button, cos my screenplay ideas might become crazier every year... 🤪 Thanks for watching, bro ! 😎
@@65andbackonthebike Hey eddie I am going to be in Amsterdam on friday (my son is visiting universities). Is it pretty easy to rent tour bikes in the Netherlands? Im actually thinking about bringing my panniers and going for a jaunt for a few days. Let me know your thoughts.
Great video and very inspiring 👏🙏

Amazing how philosophical people are. What a wonderful experience! Thank you for sharing with us!

So refreshing to see your film, humanity and free spirit in a rapidly changing world where the political class and media try their hardest to control us. As you see from your travels, we are all equal, all trying to get on with our life, taking joy in simple pleasures. I look forward to seeing your next adventure.
Thank you ! Yes, indeed a free spirit, simplicity, and a strong sense of togetherness/solidarity are the things that will be able to unstoppably beat the control mechanisms in the end... 😊
Thank you… I needed this today. I’m 66. I have been outfitting my bike for bike packing - I need a pilgrimage…. 6 months today that my beloved husband passed on. Broken.
I'm sorry to hear that, Jan. My condoleances. I'd say go on that trip, no matter the destination, and let yourself be spirited by whatever and whichever beautiful soul you come across on your pilgrimage, slowly healing your own scars. Blessings ! 🙏

Wonderful film - warm, encouraging and professionally made. Many bikers can recognize themselves in it. And a very nice song that I cannot stop singing! Greetings from Poland (still waiting for my own trip this year).
Thank you so much ! 🙏 And good luck on your trip !
I was so pleased to see that you had made another journey and taken the time record this beautiful film. I'm 66 and a pretty much 'lapsed' cyclist - I now own more bicycles than I ride miles per week. You are an inspiration to us all and make the best argument possible for us all to spend time in the saddle. Thank you so much for letting us join you on this trip. Cheers 👍🏼
My pleasure, Mick. Glad I might have inspired you to maybe turn around that equation... 😃
hello Eddy, i'm enjoy a lot watching your video, and learn something... simple plan and start cycling... taka care sir.
