So... If I'm understanding the description... The game speed is as high as it is because modern hardware doesn't even break a sweat handling the game and the game itself doesn't have a reasonable cap set on it's performance.
For a one man show, much less one that was completely out of house, this is pretty good considering how faithful it is to the original's formula. That's about all the praise I can afford this game though lol
Because it basically is an officially licensed bootleg... Capcom only published this, this was deved by one guy and i think he wasn't given much time and didn't have that much experience with making games... You can find more info online if you just do a cursory search for mega man dos.
I’ve had this game since I was a kid and hated it because I could never beat it like I could MMII on NES. You wouldn’t believe how much trouble just the damn frogs gave me at first. Pretty sure mine only had CGA, four colors though. Like cyan, blue, magenta and some other color.
Probably. It’s been so long I can’t remember. I played it on my first pc as a kid. A hand me down 286 ibm clone from my pops. It had EGA and was capable of 16 colors but I remember my copy only working in four color mode. Those were the good old days when shareware floppies were abundant, mice were barely utilized, having a joystick was a privilege and dialup modems were a luxury.
I played through this game in about 20 minutes, Jankiness aside it’s quite easy and I am not surprised it got completed this fast you COMPLETELY skipped volt man’s stage tho… how!?
Mega Man for DOS is a game that's largely dependent on CPU speed to run properly. This video shows the game running a lot too fast. TASVideos, y'all sure about this one? I mean, you can set DOSBox up to handle these games correctly, on the clock speed they were meant for. This is just laziness in handling games like this.
The trick is that they're not using DOSBox, they're using a Java PC emulator modified for recording/playing TASes: tasvideos.org/EmulatorResources/JPC.html The performance of the emulated machine is the same across all games.
You know how a lot of early games speed up to unplayable levels on modern computers without special countermeasures due to their having more processing power? Well, the Megaman DOS games ran too fast to play on computers that were *on shelves when it was released.* To quote the description: “This game runs too fast on anything more modern than a low-end 386 or so. As such, the encode is technically correct.”
K1naku5ana3R1ka The thing is programmers back then were super retarded and instead of doing things right they did fixed sleep loops which made the game dependant on the cpu's speed. Thats something youd make for a machine with no real time clock like the psx but not for a pc....
There was a giant argument about this on TASVideos, and this is apparently how it runs on a computer with the specs from the time, without hitting the speed adjust keys EDIT: This is also mentioned in the description

BUT WILL IT LAST!!!
For optimal viewing pleasure, I'd suggest watching in either 0.25 speed (which is closest to the "true" framerate for this game) or 0.5.
Nah, 2x is where it's at!
@@uubrmanx HELL YEA BROTHER
I'm pretty confident this is the Zelda CDI equivalent of MegaMan. Still it's interesting they have original bosses in it.
I like how Mega Man's stance in this is actually based on Cut Man's from MM1. I had this game on my 386SX. It was like 0.05x speed, so this is nice.
So that's why he looks so weird
Yeah he's like slanted to the side a bit

An attempt was certainly made.
Just, uh, not a great one.
It absolutely captures the _concept_ and that's about it.

Sonic The Hedgehog: *Hey, that's my job! Not yours...*
The blue bomber has now become the blue blur.
gotta raise and lower my X and Y values fast
This speedrun is better than the game itself, no joking...
But will it last!!!
However, Monkey Boy 4 or 5 wasn't produced for DOS

Published right before the AGDQ run of this game as well, nice
There was a delay with the GDQ crew. Dilation stations take time to set up.
now that's what I call a "speed run".
0:10 did i put this video at 2x speed?
One of the fastest clear time for any megaman game
I had to check my playback speed to see if it was at normal
I wonder how Stephen Rozner is doing now.
Gaming Historian just put out a video yesterday about the story of Mega Man for DOS, including an interview with Rozner
After playing Mega Man 2 on an NES I remember getting this game for my 486 and tried to play it with a keyboard.
It... did not go well.
I really appreciate the accurate PC speaker emulation.
Me too, nice
well, this is... something
Why it looks like a bootleg?
Letycjusz S.
Because the entire game was litterally made by one person. Take a look at the credits

@@JulesVonBasslake He wasn't even permited to get the original assets, that's horrible, there's so much a person can do.
Almost all early MS-DOS games look like bootlegs, especially arcade ports.
@@Schimnesthai I can only imagine these games being extremely good with original asset
The only hero that can beat all 3 bosses twice along with wily in less than 2 minutes! What a chad!
oh god this game

This game actually sounds quite good for an MS-DOS PC speaker. That's not saying much though.

So this is how hell sounds like

I blinked and missed the entire second level. :(
Wow. That was pretty fast.
Don't forget Mega Man for ms-dos to come out on gog (old games) so we can play
