Alright, for real this time. Mega Man for the MS DOS is a licensed product developed by Hi Tech Expressions back in 1990. It is infamous for being one of the worst Mega Man games in existence. And while that is definitely true, it at least doesn't stick around for very long as there's only 3 Robot Master stages, 1 very brief intro stage, and 1 fortress stage, with Wily waiting at the end. Defeating Wily nets you a screen for your troubles, no credits to roll, and then the game crashes after you push shoot. Riveting.

This is the first Mega Man to have 4-way scrolling, it's the first to have one-piece stages (instead of sections stitched with ladders and edges of screens), it's the first to have an intro stage, the first to have platforms that can be jumped through, and it's also the first Mega Man to feature the curvy text logo...

Nah, Megaman 2's Wily Stage 6's soundtrack is better

Much of this game looks completely foreign to me, but some parts like the toxic waste barrels, the dripping lava, or the ants bring back of surge of memory from when I was maybe six years old. Funny how that works.

You all laugh but this was one of the "better" DOS games back in 1990. I played this on my dad's 286 computer in VGA graphics and maybe 5 FPS. No it wasn't great but it's what we had. :)
Also worth noting that Stephen Rozner worked at Capcom but didn't get to work on anything cool. So he worked on this game after-hours, and successfully sold it to Capcom later.
Two years later and he coded an original game with his brother, called Bioman. He showed it to Capcom, and then it was them who suggested they re-skin it into a Mega Man game, Mega Man 3 for DOS. (They skipped 2 for some reason).
Almost that, but no, it was Hi Tech Expressions who published this with permission from Capcom, and it was also Hi Tech Expressions who forced them to convert Bio Man to Mega Man because they already had the license for Mega Man & it was less risky than coming up with a new brand.

How do you get this game to run? Whenever I try to play DOS games on my PC they either crash or have really weird graphical glitches.

@@kawafernandes7025 i know this is like 10 months later and you probably dont care anymore, but I played it on internet archive and had to turn the joystick option to off when I started it up to get it to respond to the fire button being pressed. idk if its like that everywhere, but thats how it is on IA at least.

That's just being plain nasty, as someone who knows the background about this game.
I owned this back in the day. I owned an NES and SNES and loved Mega Man, but I was also super fascinated by DOS games. There weren't a lot of sidescrollers for DOS and none of them could compete with what was on the consoles. But they were interesting and felt so different, albeit janky.
