I am a part-time watchmaker live in Vietnam. The movement in DW, I bought from Chinese's trader for 30usd/1kg. Yes you heard it, they sell it not by piece, but by bulk with kg as a measure. 80% of those movement will die in 1-1,5 years; 15% die in 6-12 months; 5% die under 6 months. And I never bought more than 5kg to benefit from the "15% discount for every 5kg". Just want to share, sorry for my English.
@7/11 WAS A PART TIME JOB He's right. Miyota movements are super cheap (not every one is, but the lower tier quartz ones in the DW are). Miyota says they are manufactured in Japan, but as with everything, there is usually a hint that indicates that some of the production is done in China.
Nonsense. DW movement is cheap but not as 80% die in under 2 years. Otherwise DW would be in bankruptcy right now as their warranty is 2 years. I personally own a DW I wear daily with minimal care still doing well after 3 years.

Nice review Ben! I'm happy to say I just bought a Seiko 5 (my first automatic watch) for almost half the price of the Daniel Wellington. Keep up the good work. Cheers from Ohio!
4 years ago, I got a legitimate DW Classic Sheffield watch from a reputable dept. store and other than changing the battery once, it still works like new till this day. No visible scratches whatsoever. Yes, I can get counterfeit DW watches online which are 10x cheaper, but if anything goes wrong with them, there'd be no warranty. I know DW watches aren't the best quality, but I like how it looks and no other watches from other brands look *EXACTLY* like it. Many look similar but none has the exact same slimness the DW watch has. See, my work requires me to wear long sleeved business shirts, hence my sleeves looks uneven if I wear other thicker watches. I wear my DW watch on the daily to the office on the weekdays and if I head out on the weekends, I switch it up to something more expensive looking like the Orient or the Seiko.
I have a Daniel Wellington and I’m keeping it until it breaks. After that I’ll go for Casio or seiko. Maybe a Vostok if I feel a bit crazy. I made a bad decision but if I already have it I might as well use it.
So Filip Tysander, founder of Daniel Wellington met a British gentleman years ago, with impeccable yet understated style and wore his vintage watches on Nato straps. Filip Tysander met TGV then?
I have a Daniel Wellington watch with the bracelet and I actually enjoy it. It tells the time and it cute and small on my wrist. I got it for Christmas a few years ago and I really can’t complain 🤷🏽♀️ I guess to each is it’s own 💕thanks for sharing
The issue is you're overpaying for what's basically a $15 AliExpress outsourced watch from China. If you paid anything less than $50, cool. If you like it, even better. But $250? You have to be hyper-soft in the head to think that's a clever investment.
You should do a review of a Fillipo Loreti watch, I’ve seen their ads on UA-cam and their designs and functions are compelling for the price point PS- Love your channels keep up the good work
As a kid I always thought the watches on display in stores that had their second hand not moving were dead. Didn't even know that there was a thing called a mechanical watch.
Interesting. I'm not a millennial (now in my late 50s) but about 5 years ago I was looking for a nice watch and all my Google searches led me down a rabbit hole of DW watches with fabric straps. I had reached the stage of making my final choice of colours when I actually saw them on display in a shop and thought, "Ugh!" A triumph of marketing over quality.
I bought the 36mm variant in 2016 or so, because of the slimness and the style; but it was pure accident thst I chose this brand, as I had originally planned to buy a Skagen but the dealer didn't had those available and patience is not my strongest virtue. Except for the strap that I had to replace after about a year or two, so far I had no problems with the quality. Before the DW, I had a Junkers automatic that was twice as expensive and utterly disappointing for me. The slim and reliable (sic!) DW has bern doing a better job since; but probably a lot of cheaper options would have as well.
For this price you can get a Seiko 5 Automatic with Day and Date Complication, the Pedigree of a Watch Company such as Seiko, and Exhibition back, where you can see the 21 Jewel Movement. You could also get Swiss Made Tissot, MIDO, Wenger, or Luminox.
So glad that you made a separate channel for topics related to watches..really like your detailed presentation and videos about overpriced 'luxury' watches. Keep it up!
The people who buy fashion watches are the same ones who think Beats are high end headphones. They only care about looks and the logo, no matter how overpriced the product is.
It makes me laugh that some people would pay 350 USD for a watch that worth no more than 8 USD. They are basically paying 98% of the price for two letters printed on the dial of a generic Chinese watch.
I was out looking for a Christmas present for my mother earlier. I saw a rather nice watch and jewellery set in a jewellery store. I almost bought it, but I saw that the watch was indeed a Daniel Wellington. I immediately changed my mind
The problem I see here, is that youtubers and reviewers keep reviewing this brand over and over again, which gives them more bigger audience reach. Why not just stop doing it and forget it even exists. This brand is in range of the ben10, pokemon, happy meals watches. This is a mass produced ~5-10usd, and they sell for ~250usd. I do not own a DW, but appreciate the work the John Filip has done since 2011.
Because, quite frankly, it gives him hits and exposure. And there'll always be all those paid influencer reviews, so it's nice to have at least some counterpoints.
Eh, not my style... I prefer watches that are built to take a beating. Those can get pretty pricey as well tho. I think Timex just released a solar powered explorer watch for like 40 bucks, supposedly recharges from any light. I'd prefer that over DW watches for sure.
Fidel Cashflow the Explorer Gallatin. I bought one but honestly I’m disappointed with it. It looks cool in pictures but it’s very cheap feeling in person and the case is plastic that feels cheap, I’ve also seen pictures of lugs being completely broken off. I don’t recommend it.
I didn't know a thing about Daniel Wellington watches till today. I have two DW watches; one from 2014 (bought used from eBay, Still works great tho after 7 years) and one from last year from an outlet. They look great but I'm glad I didn't spend more than 60 for both. Those two will be my last. Great video!
Remember when luxury was more than style? When it was something made with high quality materials by expert craftsmen and meant to last a lifetime. I feel like most people don't look below the surface for real quality anymore. All they see is price and appearance
I have a co worker friend that wears a Daniel Wellington at work, and I do say it looks nice. I think he told me he got it on Amazon. I thought of getting one myself, but I would get something different since I don’t want to be a copycat and I seen other watches I like more from Tissot to Seiko. One thing I do like about DW watches is they are thin.
@@djayyoda Nope, I'm sick of Rolex and their overpriced steel Watches? I'm starting to collect Invicta watches. Archie has better jump on the horn and tell those Swiss to stop playing around?
Basically design VS material. I'm on the design end. Compromising on material for design is well worth and is how many millennials live by. It's the first and lasting impression you make on the masses.
I’m looking for a Apple Watch case to make Apple Watch look luxurious, I saw the Daniel wellington Apple Watch case, do you have any brand you can recommend for luxury Apple Watch case?
I suspect that this is a re-labelled SKMEI, so is not a bad watch, but should cost £10-£20. I've noticed a brand on Amazon called DISTRICT LDN which is a Chinese watch re-badge job, but instead of ridiculous money, their versions come in at £20-£30 which is reasonable I guess if they take care of after-sales service and provide British-based support.
Hey Ben could you make a video for Kane watches? I've seen them on their official website and I was surprised about their style. They are minimalistic watches.
It is a nice review and it is hard to disagree to it. Yet what is missing here what all those fashion brands are targeting mainly women's watch market. And if for gents watches there are so many much better alternatives and normal person even don't look at those ridiculous products, for ladies situation and criteria are different. Personally I don't like DW, MVT , etc but there is a clear lack for entry level modern style ladies watches. This allows such pseudo brands to thrive. Maybe Swatch doing good job here but not in classic style. And to say honestly if I look to the entry product lineup of other respectable brands for ladies I.e. Seiko and Tissot etc. it is rather poor, stylistically outdated and not sufficient. Such very nice brands with history as Casio and Timex are somehow considered as too cheap to wear as fashion/bijoux accessory ( clear marketing mistakes). So situation in this market is more complex creating opportunities for DW and similar.
I can get a DW St. Mawes watch online for $41 Canadian. Likely from the same Chinese supplier that makes them for DW. I'm not a millennial but I do like the minimalist style every now and then. I would pay the $41 for the Daniel Wellington but I also have a Skagen Jorn that has been a favorite of mine since I picked it up at Costco a couple of years ago.
Guys u got to be real now tho... minimalist design, good material, good build and simple. Maybe seen too much around already, but this shows how cool it really is, not how smart you are and how stupid we are.
That's how I feel haha . I like it but I can clearly see they over charge . But don't all bullshit companies? Never ganna buy another one but eh, i don't feel too bad about it
quick google search will tell you everything you need to know about DW watches. I almost bought a Hugo Boss if my friend didn't stop me. and people buy fashion watches all for the same reason, not for the look, you can match it with Frederique Constant or anything else, but to have one more brand name somewhere hanging.
But Frederique Constant costs quite a bit more, and they like to be inspired by other, greater brands IMHO. Also, their quartz watches are a bit of daylight robbery in terms of what you're getting (as in... qwartz).
Based on the toxicity and elitism in the comment section I will probably drown in insults, but ..Yes, I bought one of these! Oh god, why? Well, let me tell you a story. Since my work requires me to wear a suit from time to time, and my older watch, that I used to wear during college was a little too bulky for that, I needed, or rather wanted, a new watch. I went to a store. A jewelry store to be exact. It is an old jewelry store in my hometown that my family went to since I can remember. I actually I got my first watch from that store and every watch ever since. I walked into the store without having watched a single video and without having read a single article about watches. Dumb me huh? I dont have an instagram account and couldn't give less of a shit about brands. I just happen to like clean and minimalist watches. I asked the staff for their options of slim watches without complications, because I honestly hated the analog calendar complications I experienced in the past and every modern watch with a look that somewhat appeals to me seems to come with these nowadays. I was presented with a few different models and I opted for the DW, without ever having heard about the brand or any of the hype that seemingly existed, just because I liked the look the most and it was the most comfortable model I tried that day - in fact, I would have preferred a watch with no branding at all, but I cant really blame manufacturers or brands for putting their logo somewhere. I picked two different strap colors, they ordered it for me and a few days later I picked it up. Since then I have worn it to work every day. It doesn't have a single scratch, probably because I took good care of it, it has been reliable in the single function it has and I still really like the look whenever I check the time. After watching this very informative video, I know that I probably overpaid - a lot! And I also know that the youtube watch-snob army will probably turn away in disgust, as soon as they take a look at my wrist. But honestly, this makes me like the watch even more. So thank you for this video. I will probably come back to this channel to make a more informed buying decision next time. But even If in the future I end up buying the most feature complete, value-for-money optimized and internet hero approved watch in existence, I hopefully never end up like some of the toxic trash in the comment section.
Got one of these as a gift (with metal band) and I absolutely love it too. I probably would never spend retail on a watch (any watch), but as a gift, it means a lot to me that I got one that I love and it looks great with a button down. If you're really into watches, you probably will stay away from this brand, and that is OK. If you want to look good, and have functionality, this brand is an OK buy, especially if you have the funds and you like it. After all, that's all that really matters.
I have 4 affordable (200-400 usd) automatic Seiko watches (2 Seiko 5s, a Presage and a Prospex), the problem is, if and when they stop working, there isn't much point in having them serviced, since the service is going to cost more than the watches are worth. I'm looking at the new Longines Hydroconquest (ref L3.782.4.56.9) for my next watch. One thing I don't like about Seiko is that now they've artificially differentiated their collections with pricing and movements. Previously the 4r36 and 4r35 could be found in Seiko 5s, now it seems they're moving that to Prospex and Presage lines for around 400-500 usd and the 6r15 has moved to around 800-1000 usd, whereas that could be found at a lower price previously. Also they keep releasing too many "limited and "special" editions all the time. I did see somewhere that Seiko is going to up the power reserve to 80 hours on the 4r35 and 4r36 to match Swatch group movements, which would be a good thing.
Great vid on an ‘uncool’ watch in my opinion, as the social media herd bought them and other similar fashion watches which is all the DW is. Having said that, buy what you like and wear what you like and be yourself. Just don’t get ripped off.
As for daniel wellington watches I really think that they have not so much quality. I would prefer to pay 30€ extra for a vintage style Orient than buying this.
I hate to admit that I paid for the name brand rather than the actual value (I have two DW watches). While the watch has been doing just fine over the past two and a half years, but I can see why getting a cheaper alternative like the Casio would be a better value. It's basically the iPhones of the affordable luxury watch category lol.
Can you look into Carl Edmond? Also swedish recentlly bankrupt, designed by Eric Giroud!Much cheaper now than a DW. Would be cool to see your take on it
Ben, I have found the DW, VINCERO & MVMT ultimate Assasin, THE KILLER that will come in at around 150 USD in Auto, with a Seagul Movement, hand assembed, it is a dress watch. I will see if they will send you one, as this proves everything you have been saying, even the packaging walks all over these other brands.
@Tom The Fish I haven't seen a misaligned bezel on a Seiko 5 - though those are in-house automatic movements with sweeping seconds, so even if they were misaligned you wouldn't be able to tell.

update
You should do a review of a Fillipo Loreti watch, I’ve seen their ads on UA-cam and their designs and functions are compelling for the price point
PS- Love your channels keep up the good work
🤮
Y’know, I gotta say, I love the lighting in these thumbnails! Cheers Ben!
As a kid I always thought the watches on display in stores that had their second hand not moving were dead. Didn't even know that there was a thing called a mechanical watch.
I am so glad Casio makes these as well, much better and much cheaper. Casio is like the Superman of a watch word!
I'm trying to get my first watch and this video was incredibly helpful. Keep it up man
Interesting.
Are you paying Archie any royalties for that snippet? 😂
I also think that what is particularly offensive is their marketing. As such I judge them as definitely uncool.
Keep it up!
Trash. Minimal value, maximum ripoff
So it still has value.....for DW ! ;)
They make so much money. This is a genius business model. I hope to build and own a business like this. Genius.
Wanting to make loads of money by ripping people off. Wonderful.
Great video! Completely agree! Also that Casio is a nice find, I haven't seen it before! Reminds me of some Nomos watches!
Wish I'd found it months ago!
Exactly! It’s not a bad watch. But you can find the same thing for $15 at a drugstore.
Because, quite frankly, it gives him hits and exposure. And there'll always be all those paid influencer reviews, so it's nice to have at least some counterpoints.
You know Pokemon has better staying power than most brands created in the last 30 years.
To me the design is quite good, very versatile, but i wouldn't pay for that price.
I recently purchased a similar design but only cost less than $10.
It was way different back then. People didn’t buy online and shops would often hike up the prices.
Can't wait for the casio review!
My video wish list:
Braun watch review
GF reacts to watches
Affordable Vintage watches
NO. I would prefer ask the time to someone along the street than wear a Daniel Wellington.
Woah what a pleasant and detailed review! You've earned a sub. Keep it up dude
I got one for my birthday and I'm very happy with it (I'm in my sixties)
What the components cost isn't relevant P. Johnson
Actually he met Archie Luxury in Australia and talked high end watches and doesn't want to pay Archie any royalties.
Dave Nolan you gotta buy rowwwwleckkkks not ssshhiiitters!
@@djayyoda Nope, I'm sick of Rolex and their overpriced steel Watches? I'm starting to collect Invicta watches. Archie has better jump on the horn and tell those Swiss to stop playing around?
The D is backwards... I know you know that, but... the D is backwards
H
Basically design VS material.
I'm on the design end. Compromising on material for design is well worth and is how many millennials live by. It's the first and lasting impression you make on the masses.
Very Good video, i just got this watch and i see why people hate it but i didnt and i would never pay full price but only paid $30 for it
It’s not for me. I wear my Seiko 5 daily, Timex for sentimental reasons, a Longines DolceVita for the evening, and Casio. Saving for an Patek!
I’m looking for a Apple Watch case to make Apple Watch look luxurious, I saw the Daniel wellington Apple Watch case, do you have any brand you can recommend for luxury Apple Watch case?
I'm in the military I have been using this watch for about 2 months now
I suspect that this is a re-labelled SKMEI, so is not a bad watch, but should cost £10-£20. I've noticed a brand on Amazon called DISTRICT LDN which is a Chinese watch re-badge job, but instead of ridiculous money, their versions come in at £20-£30 which is reasonable I guess if they take care of after-sales service and provide British-based support.
James Bond Ω watch for life.
i have mine i bought 20,000 rwandan francs ($11) i know it sounds cheap but it looks so amazing
Hey Ben could you make a video for Kane watches? I've seen them on their official website and I was surprised about their style. They are minimalistic watches.
I’m not a watch guy but I got this watch as gift and I get compliments on it all the time, though granted not from obnoxious youtubers.
You should have offered alternatives in the DW price range - a few examples of great stuff you can get for $150.
Great video, helped me a lot to come to a decision, thank you!
I think that Casio Sapphire actually has DW on the case back :D
Casio and Timex should sponsor you, from this collection of 5 videos on minimalist watches, they're all sold out!
Agree. Some women are more particular with a watch's fashion factor more than other components that make a great watch. DW thrives on that criteria.
I just ordered a SKMEI watch from Amazon. It looks exactly the same as a DW watch but for only 15 dollars. lol
The John Cena bit was brilliant! nice work
Can't go wrong with an Orient Bambino... Cheaper and groingrabbingly awesome.
Even the new Orient Symphony looks nice and have a good movement for the price
@@simonas925 absolutely, they are good robust design.
I've known DW since the start and they used to be like 50 bucks, now they go 300% that
I don't agree about seiko. The only model I liked was 275 euros. Casio too, is not less expensive than wellington.
They are not well made.
There is another brand called PX. That’s really nice looking. I found cheap version DW on wish for 25 usd. Let’s see what’s all about.
Have ever considered a Marloe Coniston to review? Under £300 and something I’m very tempted to buy next.
I have a DW and I love it. It tells the time looks great and I like the slim fit . Shame I over paid.
That's how I feel haha . I like it but I can clearly see they over charge . But don't all bullshit companies? Never ganna buy another one but eh, i don't feel too bad about it
Totally agree, we all probably pay to much for everything we buy, I enjoy it and it’s been holding up over the years
quick google search will tell you everything you need to know about DW watches.
13:43 woah woah woah, that’s an entirely unfair comparison. Manure makes great fertilizer!
My wife saved up and surprised me with my dream watch ⌚️. A Nomos Tangente.
Haven't been using my DW watch for years now, it just stopped prior to me not using it. And I begged my sister for gifting it to me😢
What do you think about fossil commuter
Opinion on Timex Weekenders?
You don't know if DW was the first with this design?
How about the Junghans Max Bill in 1961?
minimalist garbage, seen my friends bought it and the mineral cracks after 1 year
should i go for Orient Bambino Open Heart watch ?
That's a good choice if you like it!
Nicely reviewed
Want an affordable and great watch? Get a Seiko
@Tom The Fish I haven't seen a misaligned bezel on a Seiko 5 - though those are in-house automatic movements with sweeping seconds, so even if they were misaligned you wouldn't be able to tell.
Doxa D-Light, Tissot Everytime...swiss made, sapphire, you can get the Doxa for about 100$ on sale, the Tissot is about 250$
And still, my DW is my prized possesion and it sits happily on my wrist every single day.
Oh no
I've waited for this
Me too mate haha
