These Chinese mini-humuckers have an interesting construction. If you open them up, you'll see it's just two ceramic bars next to each other, wrapped in coil wire. No pole pieces or rails.
It doesn't sound "bad" it just sounds "different" than you were expecting. Some players can make beautiful sounds with gear that rhe majority would consider unusable.
Hi Ryan. Great Surf guitar there as the big shark's / dolphin fin at the top back makes it!! You could call it Flipper or The White Pointer! Greg - (Aussie surf guitar nut)
I had a Firebird V years ago and really loved the minihum in the neck but the bridge mini was too thin and frail sounding. This one doesn't sound too bad for $12.
It's a nerdy thing on my part but I noticed you changed the pots and the bridge pickup. I don't quite have the ear to tell how much of an effect that has on the final result, though you do, the brightness you refer to. I'll have to replay the video and listen again. My first thought would be if I were doing this (as a total nerd) would be to change one thing at a time to see what the effect is. My learning curve. That bridge pickup is certainly more subtle compared to the P90s, really interesting. The P90s are just more joyful.
Dang I’ve been looking at those awhile now! I’m digging the look and sound of that Firebird style pickup in yours. Please Rondo make one last run if you still can! I promise I’ll buy one this time!
In the loop jam, it sounded fine. By comparison with the P90, it sounded rough imo, but maybe that's just volume bias since it's a bit quieter? Either way, these are my favorite types of videos of yours. Keep it up!
Oh! Ryan, you made the sinful string swap! So much sadness now. Always always use the old strings for the A/B test of new tone parts. Otherwise too many players think their expensive hardware swap was "Awesome!" where they run around telling all the forums about it (like Tone Wood) when the audible real change was the new strings.
So happy I grabbed one of these guitars before it was too late! Your fault, thanks! Seems the trem version had been sold out for a while. Finally found one on Reverb. Stupidly, AS SOON AS I got it, before I even plugged it in, I accidentally took it way too far apart simply trying to modify the pickguard lol! Maybe Adrian Belew taught me that. At any rate, upon plugging it in, something is WRONG! Lots of noise and I don't know what I'm doing! While it looks amazing hanging on my wall, I REALLY look forward to dissecting it all over again and trying to truly learn the ins and outs the art of cheap, err. inexpensive guitar mods. AND ACTUALLY PLAYING IT! Referencing this vid and your previous one (and following along on hopeful future mutations) will surely help me tremendously! MuchThanks & Cheers! Oh, and also really dig that "jam" btw!!!!
There are not enough UA-cam videos on swapping a mini-humbucker in place of a P90. Especially since there are lot of different ways of mounting both. So, thanks for adding another one!
I really love this guitar! Rondo needs to bring it back (in red with three p90s and JM trem). I would buy one TODAY. Every time Ryan does a video with this guitar in view, I look to see if Rondo has it back. No dice! Maybe a Ryan SIGNATURE Surfbuddy Guitar. COME ON RONDO!
Ryan, P90s are pretty hot on their own so putting in a mini humbucker wouldn't boost the signal unless it was specifically overwound. Play with pickup heights by ear, including bass and treble tip. Check out old Hendrix videos and you'll see he set his pickups by ear at angles.
I’m as far from Hendrix as possible, but 100% set your pickup height by ear. You’re speaking facts. Every pickup in every one of my guitars gets this treatment and it makes a world of difference.
That 12 dollar bridge humbucker clean is like what clean bridge humbuckers sound to people who don't like clean bridge humbucker tones..... and by people I mean me LOL single coils for the win is all I gotta say 😌
Well it's only got a 7k output so I would imagine that would explain the low volume. Also with it being microphonic, just ditch it or fix it if possible. :P
Definitely sounds a bit thin and quiet. I would’ve expected a bit of grit from adding a mini humbucker as well, but the stock p90s seemed to have more body and grit than the humbucker. The mini bucket doesn’t sound bad really, but I think the p90 that was in it sounds better to my ears. But for surfy lead stuff that mini bucket could be useful as long as you compensate for the volume drop.
Looks and sounds cool Ryan. Just an observation, the Wang head would balance out look wise if you put it on top of your tan Princeton to mirror your Fender Reverb on your black Princeton.🤔 Just a thought.
A decent compromise between single coils and humbuckers is 300k pots. I did this on a Jet King and it sounded so much more even between full humbucker and coil split. PRS has resistors (and sometimes capacitors) on their coil split push-pull pots to do something similar.
Ryan, call me crazy, but the biggest buck/bang came from the POTS upgrade (not the pickup swap)! I enjoyed watching you go through the upgrade process! 👍
Have to say I'm a big fan of a P90 in the bridge position specifically; I'd be tempted to put that miniHB somewhere else or even in another guitar. As others have said P90s are generally the highest output so the miniHB most likely should be quieter. edit: think I was half-asleep when first commented; also enjoyed the SP homage
That $12 pickup might function better in the middle position as a change up to the P-90. I have a pair of Mojotone Johnny Winter Firebird pickups in an 80's American Standard Strat with a Strat pickup in the middle. They don't sound as anemic-they are louder than the Strat pickup. What can you expect from a $12 pickup anyways?
I don’t know if the bar magnet in the minibucker is the same size as a regular humbucker, but if it is you might try a magnet swap. They are super cheap and make a huge difference. Well even if it isn’t, still try it. You might get some magical tones out of that cheapie. All things considered, other than being a bit thin, it doesn’t sound too bad as is.
Your background music has grown on me so much, think it was the Harley Benton Jazzmaster kit build where I heard it first and thought "thats a weird asf song idk about it", but now I cant not vibe to it in all the fastforwarding sections lmao
I wonder what magnet is in it? I'd probably take the cover off and have a look, might be oriented wrong if you think you wired it in the right way. Could also measure the output and try it in the neck position, might work better there if it's low output
Precision Guitar offers custom SX Liquid pickguards on Reverb if you don't want to bother with tracing... Not that I've envisioned putting a purple pearl one on that beautiful surf green or anything. I'm not envious at all. Or so I keep telling myself.
I think it looks great, more on the difference of the pots? when you get the height dialed in it will be more like a humbukka. the out of phase thing is interesting, microphonic thing isn't good imo
This got me curious about the sound from the Humbucker, long story but after some reading I discovered that the way a guitar is wired, and the position of the capacitors on the pots, affects the sound of the Humbucker. Apparently in the 1950s the wiring of the LP guitars was different than that of the 1960s and the sound was brighter. I can believe that listening to Les Paul play. I have no idea if 50s wiring would make any difference to this situation. Apparently the capacitor itself also matters. I am intrigued.
What was the difference of the resistance between the P90 and Humbucker if you checked? Could be the issue of the humbucker being a little quieter. I always regret not getting one of the Liquid SX guitars when the were dirt cheap last time I checked they were around $260.00 still inexpensive but not long ago they were half that. I never had an issue with any guitar from Rondo music.
Loved the jam. I thought the mini sounded like it should with distortion. Someone below mentioned putting the mini in the middle. 🤔 Honestly, I would leave the Liquid stock. I had an SX Strat with P90s... I was always well satiated when I played that guitar. One of those, 'not sure why I sold it' guitars.
Last I looked there was still a bunch of these. Then I see this video and immediately went to Rondo and... they're gone. All of them. Guess my green hardtail will have to suffice. Really wanted another though.
it's out of phase wire the humbucker backwards and it will sound thick and loud. Matching single coils and humbuckers be a chore but worth the work most the time.
Pretty sure he’s just using the donner. He’s got a video or two on it and there is multiple other companies with the same stuff built in. One at least costs more but I think there was 3 that cost less depending on what you’re hunting for or want new/used 40/50ish is going to be the low end. Donner did have a sale a bit back on refurbished ones that were that much but still had whatever the warranty was.
Also ryan has an Amazon link to it up above apparently. He’s good like that. It’s got a $15 off thing I think you need to ckick and another $5 one underneath that when I looked. I was actually curious if they’d made an update. I think those came out originally over 5 years ago. Where’s our new model?
I would recommend Warmann FireBuckers instead as cheap replacement pickups. For something hot, DiMarzio Super Distortion in P90 size, but that is a complete different price and might be to hot, I use a 1mill Bournes pot with the one I got, but using that generally with all hot DiMarzio pups since I disconnect the tonepot.
Hmm I kind of like the sound of the cheapo pickup it’s very different to the P90s of course the obvious next step is to set it in the other two positions and see how it sounds….
The stock pickups sound great, but I don't like the idea of P90s so much , so I'm going to replace one with absolute junk. 👀 I was going to say "it sounds bad, and you should feel bad" but you didn't specifically ask for rude and nasty comments this time, so instead I'll say it was fun and maybe you should swap out the minibucker for an entwistlepickups H90. Facts.
Maybe a replacement pick guard could be shaped to come off without removing the neck?
Is it going to be in phase with the other pickups?
Yes, AND trimming the pole screws will change the sound because it changes the mass of the vibration sensing of the magnetic field.

I put that same pickup in the neck position of my Squier tele a year ago and love it
How about moving it to the middle position?
It's be a little louder and thicker sounding there and you could get the nice position 2 & 4 sounds.
6:40 Rondo has been known to superglue the pots to the knobs.
4:44 maybe mod the pickguard so it’s more easily removable

I want one!

Yeah, the Les Paul Deluxe has mini humbuckers. Play one sometime. They're absolutely nutless.
I put one of those mini humbuckers on a project guitar and I love the sound.
What a unique sound, wouldn't change it. Good video

Is the 'bucker definitely
wired in series NOT parallel?
I think it looks great, more on the difference of the pots? when you get the height dialed in it will be more like a humbukka. the out of phase thing is interesting, microphonic thing isn't good imo
Can't wait to see more demos with the Loopers!

Checkout the Wilkinson versions. They’re pretty good. Maybe move that janky pickup to the middle position as your microphonic, out of phase wildcard.
I’ve been thinking about it

Rondo's inventory is a mere shade of what it used to be 10 years ago!
I had a look, they have FA models left on the site at all!
That 6 Underground jam sounded great.
I listened to that jam at the end at 2x speed and it sounded really good 😹
sounds better than the old one
I totally love these guitars!
I might be the only nut
in the UK owns one?!!
(I'm unsure how HumBucker can be quieter than a single coil though )
Nice 6 Underground jam!
Cheapest is a moving target... now there's one for $9.99 (free delivery). You could have saved A DOLLAR!
Oh man, the knob puller can double as a post-digger.
Tonally, don't hate it. Just quiet. Sounds similar to the P90 style pickups that came stock on my GearIT LP from Amazon.
Spin spin sugar!! ❤
it's out of phase wire the humbucker backwards and it will sound thick and loud. Matching single coils and humbuckers be a chore but worth the work most the time.
Hi! What’s your current demo rig? What are you using for the drums? Sounds awesome!

You would not be happy if it sounded too close to the middle and neck pups. It's thin & bright and it complements the other two. Awesome loop jam...
Video starts at 21:35

6:01 fucking killed me 🤣 fantastic work editing Ryan.
14:21 Can you please get a Solder Fan! That stuff is really toxic!
why is it mini? It fits perfectly into place!
I hope you like the screw pin connectors I found (sent to the FB short comments).
I can't unsee the green muppet...
Don't think i seen rondo sell the 3 pickup with a trem before
The P90 all day for me
The stock pickups sound great, but I don't like the idea of P90s so much , so I'm going to replace one with absolute junk. 👀
I was going to say "it sounds bad, and you should feel bad" but you didn't specifically ask for rude and nasty comments this time, so instead I'll say it was fun and maybe you should swap out the minibucker for an entwistlepickups H90. (12K NEODYMIUM HUMBUCKER IN P90 CASING how ferocious does THAT sound like it's gonna be??)
Kind of a bummer they are discontinuing these if they are. I never been a mini humbucker fan so I can't really comment on that, but wish I could.
I think P-90 pickups sound way too brittle and twangy with 500k pots. But, then again, a 250k with a humbucker is way too muddy. I would go with GFS ferrite p90s personally
MB prob underwound, ceramic p/up! WHADDAYA expect for $12? Rrrrruber biscuit? Bao bao bao!
Honestly I don’t think it sounds that bad… especially with distortion. I think it could be fun for the right thing.
them lo-fi pickups
At that price, why not buy three?
should still add the aluminum neck to that thing
io was gonna do this to my epiphone. i was gonna buy a temu pickup but idk
I hope the $24 one sounds twice as good because that was pretty awful played clean lol.
I could make you a mini bucker for 10 times the price that would sound 10 times as bad!
They're the type of pickups that come stock in those Chinese 'factory' knock-offs. Best place to install them is the trash bin ;) A GM Songbird mini-bucker is a far better option at around $19.99. They can be coil split too. I put a pair in my non reverse FB. ua-cam.com/video/-piYJNZ_l8I/v-deo.html
a 12 dollar mini humbucker is going to be super microphonic
Poof! 😂
What I noticed in difference between the stock and minibucker, is that other than having less highs (maybe partly due to the new pots) the stock also have significantly more lows, which might make it sound like it's louder. Well it does have more signal, but I don't think that the peaks are that different.
Kind of sounded like the neck pickup was active in the middle position.
It seems like it is trying to be a Firebird pickup. Based on the spec listed on their website, it's wound to less than half of what a Gibson 'bird would be. The P-90s are probably over 8K, which is 16% more output, minimum. It's hard to tell if it is internally wired out of phase with itself, or if this is like the Gretsch 2220 bass "humbuckers" that are actually single coils. Since you like the sound of the combined bridge-mid pickups, I have a wacky idea - move the mini to the MIDDLE position so you can try to get that OOP sound in both 2 & 4 positions. Yeah, it means more drilling and soldering, but more unique sonic possibility.
3:15 he's not a cat...?
new haircut
I also don't think it sounds bad, its just thinner sounding and lower output compared to the p90s
Don’t fix it back. It has a nasty 70s classic rock thing going for it. You might wax pot the new mini bucker, though.
I can get cheaper pickups than that. Mr Fancy-pants gets pickups that come in a box. Try demoing a set that comes wrapped in newspaper, then we'll talk about cheap.
Change it back Ryan.
i have one and it humms so bad i dont play it
I like the shape of this guitar so much it makes me angry
Small pots have small sound. You definitely need to change them to big pots because big pots have BIG sound (Dylan sells them). Definitely the 12USD pickup sounded BAD. You have to pay 100USD for a pickup and it will sound GOOD. You have to change also the capacitor to an orange drop because other capacitors sound BAD (Dylan sells also those). Even better is to change the capacitor to a paper in oil capacitor. Here is the thing, oil in capacitor reduces the friction so electrons can move freely inside capacitor. The result is smooth oily high end and tight middle range with full bodied bass.
i'd put the p90 back
Upgrade the minibucker
Sounds anemic.
Still to expensive - these can be had for $10 for a pair on "other sites 😅
sissy strut in there?
Very thin and extremely bright, I have to admit
I'm really not feeling that reverb. Sorry.
