I appreciate the intent, but I think it would have been more effective to create a story inspired by Epictetus’ life with the main character being a girl who has her own name. Not only would it help avoid confusion but it would make it a little more accessible for girls who want to read a story that they think they will better relate to.

Great conversation! And yes, it's very interesting how much importance some put on the gender and race of a character instead of the core message of the story. The fact that people can't handle this kind of situations speak more of them than the book itself.

@@assassin415 I was extremely surprised with Ryan's decision to make Epictetus a girl. He definitely doesn't seem like the woke type of person. It would be interesting to hear Ryan go into further detail about the decision. On the surface, it appears like he wanted to capitalize on the wokeness of it. But maybe his decision was done deliberately to filter out fans who make a big deal about wokism for either being too woke or being too anti-woke. If his decision to make Epictetus a girl enraged someone enough to unsubscribe, they weren't wroth being a subscriber.

Great meditation to start the day and thanks for sharing your process and praxis. We need to be bold and explore examples like this of female intuition. We need to read our women thought leaders, Simone de Beauvoir, Azar Nafisi, Frida Khalo, Malala Yousafzai, Mariana Mazzucato, Esther Duflo, Hanna Arendt, Benazir Bhutto, Virginia Woolf, Cass Sunstein, Katherine Gehl, Naomi Klein, Juno Mac & Molly Smith, Emily Bronte, George Sand, George Eliot, Isak Dinesen, Maya Angelou, Harper Lee. We can never fully know as males what female intuition is, but we can get closer when we use some of their works to go "behind the mask" of some of these intellectual female giants. I also have framed on my atelier wall 6 of the global paper currencies that have female historical figures represented on the official national currency- it's a good reminder of the un-equal representation of females in S.T.E.A.M. fields like Finance and Economics.

That's a fallacy. I am not sure what Epictetus or others would have thought about that.
Yes Stoicism advocates for tolerance, understanding , not judging... But one of the pillar of this philosophy is to use your reason first, and i don't see the reasoning behind changing Epictetus' gender, hence changing who he was. Of course the content of his philosophy remains the same, but what's the message behind the change? Why ?
Is it because there isn't enough female Stoic to make a good story but we still want a parity male/female ? Or to satisfy the current woke culture?

Shouldn't we be talking more about the Female stoics in history instead of switching genders with already wildly popular Male stoics.? or the implication is that there are no good ideas from female stoics, so let's take a man's ideas and give it a female body..?

Only men with lots of masculine energy can truly understand stoicism. I don’t think he emotionally gets what it means to be a stoic. He very well gets it logically, of course being very smart.

I know I am late to this story, but I have to agree with the so called angry white man. Our culture in recent years has been re-writing all sort of movies and changing ethnicity and genders. Disney being a main source of these re-writes. I'm all for inclusivity and think we should return to the "melting pot" that we were intended to be - as it appears the Roman empire was from comments in the video. I wish you well with your book and hope it reaches the intended audience, but taking a historical figure that is male and making them female alienates many men who may have otherwise read the book. If the character would have been a student of Epictetus and went on her own journey it would stand as something new and many men would would be glad to read it. Men like strong rational women, especially women who display the the four virtues of courage, temperance, justice, and wisdom - at least this man does.
