    Like you said, it's basically free square footage in the space making it worth more for you which is always a plus for sure!
    Nice idea to clean stuff up and take advantage of the vertical free real estate!

      Yeah, but to make it even better, why not also put a sliding pole there like the firemen so you can just drop down to the bathroom if you need to. LOL. Just make sure to have a lighted sign that says occupied when the light is on down there so they don't just drop on you.

    If you are sick of looking at the boring ceiling, an easy fix is to stretch a camo net against the I beams, did the same in my own chill-loft, and for a nice light effect you could use cheapass rgb ledstrip between the net and the ceiling.

    Great job Jimmy! Please think about some joist hangers for the floor joists. Looked like sheetrock screws. Those will snap if they have the load going the wrong way. 16d nails and joist hangers will make it much safer. Making moves!

    As an architect, I can say well done. You did look at the right tables and even I checked the ones I have saved and you did it exactly right. 2x10's @ 12" on center is what I came up with too. The only thing I would've done differently is use joist hangers to secure the joists in a more "standard" way. But all in all, good work.

    • @erasethepatterns1
      @erasethepatterns1 Рік тому

      why not put 2x10's around perimeter and use 2x6 joists running the short span across instead of the full length 2x10's?

    I definitely think you need to put more support under the top of the stairs.
    If you wall in, or partially wall in that bottom part, say a couple feet from the stairs, you’ll have both more support for the top, and a more separated space (whatever you choose you use it for)

    Only thing I'd add are some 12 inch long 2x4s running horizontal in the dead space in those wall frames. Just one 2x4 near the middle of each gap (stagger them if you need to or run the screws in crooked). Would help with bowing over time. It being level shows you guys definitely did a proper job building it without cutting corners!

    Jimmy a blind man would love to see that, Joking aside the only thing I would have done slightly different is used Joist hangers that are made from steel for the joists spanning the main gap.the rest just needs some hand rail for the ELF & SAFETY.

    • @Tony_Tylinski
      @Tony_Tylinski 6 років тому +1

      Literally put a comment explaining this😂😂 hangers on the staircase. But how'd you get the joist hangers when it's supported by the 2x4 frame "wall"

    • @mclarenjohnf1
      @mclarenjohnf1 6 років тому +1

      He put the joists above the frame butting up to another 2 inch plank that was screwed to the wall, take in to consideration expansion and contraction of the building would you like to walk on a joist balanced on less than an inch or for the security of a hanger attached to the side joist and going down the side and under the joist for what they cost especially a he cut down the side wall size and used 1 extra center cross that is doing nothing. @ Dez he has said the stairs are not finished he is going to secure it more and add a hand rail.

    • @swigsfx2582
      @swigsfx2582 6 років тому

      Formula 1Fan thermal expansion has negligible affect on wood. the floor joists have 2 inches of bearing on an overbuilt wall with an overbuilt floor system and probably isnt a big deal for a couple people on a couch playing fortnite. anything under 1.5 inches would need a hanger in most building codes im pretty sure. and the 2x4 down the center was just to hold the joists straight while he laid the plywood on top. he could take it off if he really wanted to, but if he took the time to center it why not leave it there in case he wanted to hang something in the center. like a light fixture or something

    • @mackerelTmedia
      @mackerelTmedia 5 років тому

      No need for hangers the joists are sitting on the walls and there no way they’re going to shrink an inch and a half

    That's pretty cool man. I kept thinking about putting stairs on the side there and then bam, you did exactly that. That's using your noodle as my niece once said to me. LOL. now that's a more useful space. Just need to get that cleaned up and get yourself a lift and that should be pretty nice. Just don't get full of too many cars that they take all the space and you have nowhere to work. I see so many shops like that and it just baffles the mind because then they can't even walk into their shops.

    Nice work and good use of vertical space! For future builds note that you should use nails to frame structural members. Screws are brittle and have no shear strength. Your loft is a compression load, so the screws will hold.

    Definitely shorten the stairs up, you'll get more room and also put some hangers underneath the stairs that's connected to the beams so if the screws do "fail" then it's got a metal hanger so it can still be supported . Also wood tends to sag once being used that's also the reason but great job!! No need 2x4 supports underneath the actual staircase. The staircase is designed to actually support all the weight it is intended for.

    Looks pretty good. Only a couple recommendations, when you have lumber in contact with concrete it should be pressure treated. It would have been good to put a membrane between the wood and concrete, usually either foam sill-seal or scrap asphalt roofing. Straight 3/4” decking like you used will work, but tongue-and-groove would have been a little better and a little stronger. Also, make sure you get that blocking in between all those floor joists! It will increase the rigidity of the floor greatly.
