Honestly once a month you should try and do a shop mod, I don’t think any of us would mind and it’s great for tips/tricks!
Like you said, it's basically free square footage in the space making it worth more for you which is always a plus for sure!
Nice idea to clean stuff up and take advantage of the vertical free real estate!
Lost of wasted space if you dont have a lift.
Definitely like the bathroom office idea
wobbly sauce hahaha 😂😂
Looks sweet! It would be sweet to frame walls up there and actually turn it into an office!
MotionAutoTv would be awesome if he strengthened the roof over the toilet and could frame that section as an office.
ikr he could Insulate all the framing and put a ac window unit underneath and it’ll be a great place for the tv and the whole top will me storage
Yeah, but to make it even better, why not also put a sliding pole there like the firemen so you can just drop down to the bathroom if you need to. LOL. Just make sure to have a lighted sign that says occupied when the light is on down there so they don't just drop on you.
Nice to see you here
This was awesome man loved watching this was always wondering why you didn't have one! Good work guys! Can't wait to see it all set up
If you are sick of looking at the boring ceiling, an easy fix is to stretch a camo net against the I beams, did the same in my own chill-loft, and for a nice light effect you could use cheapass rgb ledstrip between the net and the ceiling.
It’s August 20th 2022 at 1:24 am
and this video popped up. It feels like yesterday that I watched it. Time goes by so quick. By watching it it gives me flashback of things I did around this time as well. It’s insane 💯
It's a trip how music and things can do that huh? Aha
just popped up for me sheesh time flys man
“I can weld it together”😂
JimmyO does what Damian only daydreams about.... shots fired lol
Its the democrats fault Damien can't get a wall.
The wall is there now tho
Love how Jimmy just just gets his shit done but Damien just talks about it, like you can create a loft without plywood or drywall. It's actually easier that way that you have just the frame so you know exactly where the frame is instead of measuring every 16"
Never seen a UA-camr start and finish a build in one vid 😂🤪
Only thing I recommended is some metal hanger brackets for the stair stringer's
We neeed a lift in the shop
Anndy Diaz he could store more cars in that shop lol, pull an Adam lz and store a car on the lift and one under it lol
As a carpenter myself. I gotta say I'm proud of you Jimmy, nice job on building the loft. Minus the 12" gapping in the walls instead of 14"/14.5", nonetheless.
Great job Jimmy! Please think about some joist hangers for the floor joists. Looked like sheetrock screws. Those will snap if they have the load going the wrong way. 16d nails and joist hangers will make it much safer. Making moves!
now frame up some walls up top and insulate it so you can have a nice warm room to edit in/take naps/castingcouch/game/chill in your shop for the winter
So, basically move to the garage? Not saying it's a bad idea..
Casting couch 😬
Watched some other set- ups. This was an easier construction than what I’ve watched. I’ll be able to go this route. Great work.
As an architect, I can say well done. You did look at the right tables and even I checked the ones I have saved and you did it exactly right. 2x10's @ 12" on center is what I came up with too. The only thing I would've done differently is use joist hangers to secure the joists in a more "standard" way. But all in all, good work.
why not put 2x10's around perimeter and use 2x6 joists running the short span across instead of the full length 2x10's?
Jimbo the Mechanic, Engineer, and Carpenter!! Is there anything this man can't do
Beast of the East Isn’t he amazing?😍❤️
Steph Field Yes!!!
I wish I had a Jimmy O in my circle!
Smart dude with ambitions!
Keep it up man
I'm so proud of jimmy 💖 it's like watching my child grow . P.s. b-halls entrance was awesome
It makes the shop look bigger and definitely worth it great job Jimmy
You should anchor the TV on the wall [the one you share with drew and jips garage], the couch in the middle facing the tv and put your desk and storage on the side closer to the bathroom. Great video bro!! I look forward to watching your uploads everyday. You’re truly an inspiration 👌🏼
I have a feeling this is going to get a shit ton of views
Same
Looks great! Need the railings and support beams under the stairs, like you said. I'd put support beams under it and railings on the top.
I make my living as a carpenter. Could sit here and call out mistakes, but im seriously impressed. Might not pass inspection but id hang out with my kids on a trampoline all day up there!
TUCKER IS ADORABLE
I definitely think you need to put more support under the top of the stairs.
If you wall in, or partially wall in that bottom part, say a couple feet from the stairs, you’ll have both more support for the top, and a more separated space (whatever you choose you use it for)
Youve come so far since these days, never ever stop dude
Add support on the back wall too, and under the stairs (like acollumn), with all the stuff you will put onto it + multiple people....you're never too carefull !
You could build a little hinged door under the stairs for even more storage. Use it for Miscellaneous items so it makes your shelves look more organized and less of a cluster fuck.
Man that was so satisfying! Since i saw tokyo drift as a kid ive allways wanted a garage space with a loft
We are proud of you!
Just like morfab *build a loveshack for you and steph upstairs .. Lol*
Make sure its sturdy though!
angelf falcon if this loft is a rockin, don’t come a knockin
Why is your picture tommy you weird obsessive person..
BigB Dont worry about it
I’m pretty worried for yommyfyeah’s safety.
Atta boy for finally doing the loft mod! You can do above photos of cars from the loft too!
came for the loft, stayed fot Tucker. PLS MORE TUCKER CONTENT
You are such an underrated UA-camr, keep up the mean videos brother
Great fuckin Job looks perfect
*Jimmy good idea with the couch as the back line for the bathroom frame. Be sure to put a 2x4 or a wood stopper so the couch does slide back when people sit down. Speaking from experience, its necessary. Keep up the awesome content brother!
When tossing up whether to choose between a size like a 2 x 6 and 2 x 4, be confident in the 2 x 4 but just reduce your stud spacing. Just a note for anyone interested.
That workmanship is a million times better then some contractors out there
Only thing I'd add are some 12 inch long 2x4s running horizontal in the dead space in those wall frames. Just one 2x4 near the middle of each gap (stagger them if you need to or run the screws in crooked). Would help with bowing over time. It being level shows you guys definitely did a proper job building it without cutting corners!
So this just popped up on my feed... Daaaaaamn Jimmy without a beard is a culture shock 😂😂😂😂
i like seeing people build shit.. great video
Holy shit i admire you for getting that done in that amount of time
Tucker is the cutest dog ever, I love him
Jimmy a blind man would love to see that, Joking aside the only thing I would have done slightly different is used Joist hangers that are made from steel for the joists spanning the main gap.the rest just needs some hand rail for the ELF & SAFETY.
that and securing the stairs better is my only suggestion.
Literally put a comment explaining this😂😂 hangers on the staircase. But how'd you get the joist hangers when it's supported by the 2x4 frame "wall"
He put the joists above the frame butting up to another 2 inch plank that was screwed to the wall, take in to consideration expansion and contraction of the building would you like to walk on a joist balanced on less than an inch or for the security of a hanger attached to the side joist and going down the side and under the joist for what they cost especially a he cut down the side wall size and used 1 extra center cross that is doing nothing. @ Dez he has said the stairs are not finished he is going to secure it more and add a hand rail.
Formula 1Fan thermal expansion has negligible affect on wood. the floor joists have 2 inches of bearing on an overbuilt wall with an overbuilt floor system and probably isnt a big deal for a couple people on a couch playing fortnite. anything under 1.5 inches would need a hanger in most building codes im pretty sure. and the 2x4 down the center was just to hold the joists straight while he laid the plywood on top. he could take it off if he really wanted to, but if he took the time to center it why not leave it there in case he wanted to hang something in the center. like a light fixture or something
No need for hangers the joists are sitting on the walls and there no way they’re going to shrink an inch and a half
You can make a long loft at the side of your shop. Right were the red Z is.. you did a great job, i watch your video every day!
Jimmy you kill the car game and the construction game as well. This is why I love your channel doing awesome shit all the time.
Should make a standing bar at the top to overlook the shop! Dual purpose handrail/ bar top.
Well done man. Your happy that’s all that matters man!
New to the channel, really enjoying it. One tip: Screws are easy, but they split wood. Use nails for anything designed to carry real weight.
Jimmy the engineer, the mechanic, and now a carpenter. What a Legend.
You should put lights on the bottom of the loft and have a nice work bench area for detail work
Coming from a professional Carpenter and redseal you did a great job don't listen to the hater's. Next time put two top/cap plates on the support wall. But due to the josits being right above the stud it shouldn't be a problem And will last.
Where do I purchase josits?
That's pretty cool man. I kept thinking about putting stairs on the side there and then bam, you did exactly that. That's using your noodle as my niece once said to me. LOL. now that's a more useful space. Just need to get that cleaned up and get yourself a lift and that should be pretty nice. Just don't get full of too many cars that they take all the space and you have nowhere to work. I see so many shops like that and it just baffles the mind because then they can't even walk into their shops.
bhall coming out of nowhere lol 10/10 enthusiasm on that one
Good call on the loft! Literally making more usable space.
Keep doing stuff like this I like it also you could try to wall mount the tv.
Nice work and good use of vertical space! For future builds note that you should use nails to frame structural members. Screws are brittle and have no shear strength. Your loft is a compression load, so the screws will hold.
Jimmy Oakes killing it again 🤘🏻 kudos man , some paint to match the bathroom, some carpet for the top and some lights for underneath in the work space and your set !! Can’t wait to see what you do man, keep it up 👌🏻
Why wouldn't you use joist hangars? So much stronger (especially when you mount the stairs to the loft).
Dude this is so sick.. always loved lofts but put a loft in a garage and it’s so much better!
I have a Gazebo in mind at home........................
Patricia Oakes Put him to work lol
Jimmy help your mom out
I don’t normally comment but I have to on this one because of how awesome this turned out, one of my favorite videos you’ve made
Definitely shorten the stairs up, you'll get more room and also put some hangers underneath the stairs that's connected to the beams so if the screws do "fail" then it's got a metal hanger so it can still be supported . Also wood tends to sag once being used that's also the reason but great job!! No need 2x4 supports underneath the actual staircase. The staircase is designed to actually support all the weight it is intended for.
Awesome video. I'm in the same boat here, about to do the same thing being a car guy and not really a construction guy. This made it seem way less intimidating. Thanks a lot!
Probably your best video I’ve seen
Not only jimmy can teach your cars but can also teach you about being bob the builder , great job on the extra space
The loft is sick, finish it up!
I watched the whole 2 minute unskippable ad just for you Jimmy!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m so eager for my shed to go up now! Planning on building my own dry car storage off the front for my workable area!
Great idea with the loft. can you just for laughs throw the cappuccino under the loft lol gotta shoutout Justin tho he gave all the ideas lol
Cool work jimmy worth the money the garage looks better !
Just need a lift now get one make your life easier man !
That’s sick, I definitely wouldn’t mind if you put up the handrails and stair supports
OMG I LOVED IT!!! LIT CONTENT🔥 this makes the shop sooo nice paint it the same red like the bathroom wall, make railing for the stairs and the side make it look like a balcony!
Jesus christ. Work at 4. Looking around for a engine hoist to pull the miata engine! But Jimmy has to upload! Oh well time for a break. Hot af in florida today
Looks pretty good. Only a couple recommendations, when you have lumber in contact with concrete it should be pressure treated. It would have been good to put a membrane between the wood and concrete, usually either foam sill-seal or scrap asphalt roofing. Straight 3/4” decking like you used will work, but tongue-and-groove would have been a little better and a little stronger. Also, make sure you get that blocking in between all those floor joists! It will increase the rigidity of the floor greatly.
Not my vid, but thanks for the tips. I am considering a build like this myself.
Let's go Build that loft Jimmy O
This is actually sick. I don’t mind seein more like this
I've been waiting patiently for you to tackle this very project!!! The idea's that can be stemmed from the very mod being done..... Very excited to see out come here on out!
Very good job for a beginner, you should be proud of yourself
Welcome to the Jimmy Oakes garage its the we can do it all channel . Remodeling? We can Do it. Professional car builds we can do it. Wash the Tucker. Done. Hit the thumbs up button.
you can build another frame to put over the bathroom top so you can put the tv and couch it would give you more space
Loft is mint, good job there. You could do with some wheel dolly’s in the shop to move the cars ie the cappuccino side on under the loft, without having to drive them in order to reposition.
If i was single and didnt have a kid this would be my home my cars i work on and my living spot on top with everything i need
The loft looks so great dude.
Jesus jimmy, came a long way!
one reason i fuck wit jimmy oakes is cuz if he got a idea he gon actually follow thru n get shit done 👍🏾
Yo jimmy glad you finally fixed up the garage. Looks hot!! The shop definitely needs a lift and you’re Gucci
Yes a railing would be awesome and some bracing underneath would be sweet
Rebuild the bathroom roof. Worth the extra space. GOOD JOB JIMMY. virtual high five
I'd definitely add some metal support right under the center to help the flex of the wood and add some structural regidity and no damage with time dope man ! i'm really looking to do the same thing to my room
Looks nice and the idea is great but you need more support in the middle. 2x10 can only span 10 feet and you need more support on the corners also.. double studs on each corner will do the job.
Nice, I'll take how you put it and put it a little bit better. You made a loft which now serves as chill spot/slight storage area, making the old chill spot more square footage for cars, or full time storage, possibilities are endless. Getting to the storage area atop the bathroom has never been easier as well. Nicely done!
That's pretty badass you could make a paint booth out of the bottom part too
Just an FYI, 12" on center for joists and studs is a little over kill. Studs could've been 16" OC or even 24" OC, joists usually 16" OC. But atleast you won't have any troubles, just a little extra cost for the project.
B. Hall should make a sweet metal railing for the top
This just popped up in my recommended. Lol I watched this the day it was posted.
Duuude the loft is SICK! and "done" in one day?! It's awesome! Should hook up some lights under there though and have a little showcase of some of your cool shit :D
you need a MUCH BIGGER level to determine if that floor is actually level...
Very cool! Now slam the bathroom on tarmacs and zinc coat it.
