The Titans being thought of as big has a lot to do with the fact that later writers confused and conflated them with the giants, who warred with the Olympians in a separate, later conflict. You can even see some of these later writers throw Titan names into lists of the giants who fought in the giant war.
I always assumed that Titans where simply a title/breed of a god. Just like the Olympians are a title for the gods or the Æsir for Nordic gods like Odin. Guess like always things are not that black and white.
The titans seem to represent a more primordial state of creation. A time when the universe was not yet evolved enough for humans. The 12 gods of olympus represent creations more human aspects which didn't evolve until later.

I don't have the answer BUT I have my own theory. You see, the Greek (and norse) mythology are amalgamations of the proto-indoropean people/religions and the religions of farmer people that originated from Anatolia with their own religion. As these two groups merged their religious ideas did aswell which lead to a fight of ideas and "gods" (referring to the Titanomachy and the fights of Venir and Æsir(?)). Where as the anatolian gods were more focused on nature and forces, the PIE gods were more based on human characteristics/inventions/ideals. So as the beliefs clashed and merged and adapted throughout time, the religious fights became mythology and the old gods (mainly the anatolian ones), which became less and less worshipped, gained the title of "Titan" to specify their rather old status in the religion. So basically they are the gods that came before the new ones (the olympians). Tho of course it's rather messy to show which of the old gods could stay as olympians, which would remain in the Titan category as gods who were less worshipped, and so on. I hope this helps to understand it a bit more, as I think this might be correct. You should watch Crecganford on that topic bc he talks a lot about religion and culture of ancient (especially Proto-Indoeuropeans) people and it might help form a better understanding abt the topic :) Have a great day
If only the ancient greeks organized all there beliefs into like big and widely used books or something and had hard definitions on things so it wouldn't come down to some future dudes being like "Well guess this means this." Oh well...atleast the stories are fun.
I’ve always just said that anyone who is a kid of Ouranos and Gaia is a Titan, and everyone else like Prometheus just got the title from being around at the same time
Its kinda similar to asatron(nordic mythology) many seem to believe that asarna was the only gods but I would argue that asarna, vaner, alver(elves) and jättarna(giants). Giants as a example is described as similar to the Asar or like similar to man. They are tho often linked with evil and trickery. Later in at least Swedish mythology they became bigger and linked with Glacial erratic. One myth from Sweden(think it was Östergötland) is that a giant threw a bolder to hit a church but missed it.
What is the difference between “Cronus” and “Kronos” I cant find anything about it but every time I almost find something they keep getting combined or mixed up.
I think titans are also portrayed as very huge individuals aside from the word "titan". The battle in which the god fight the titans is referred to the gigantomachy, another word that can be associated with "very big"
You're thinking of the Titanomachy. The Gigantomachy was the gods' battle with the giants born from Uranus's blood after his castration by Cronus. Come to think of it, the association of titans with large size probably comes from people conflating the two wars with each other.
@@EarleneKing-xq2wh Not quite. Uranus is the Roman transliteration of the Greek Ούρανός (which more accurately transliterates to Ouranos), but it wasn't his Roman name, at least not in the same vein as Jupiter or Minerva. The Roman name for Uranus was Caelus.
I mean, almost all religion text nowdays is fanfic. There was a huge deal of what and what not was canon even in Christianity and multiple people wrote their versions...wich can be consider fanfic.
Here's the cool thing with ancient mythologies, they're all fanfics to begin with. Everyone can do whatever they want with gods, it always was public domain. With today's monotheist religions, it's more written in stone and changing it is terribly seen
In my canon the Titans are the 12 children of Ouranus and Gaia, that Hesiod describe as Titans, thier children (except children of Kronos and Rhea) + Hekate, so yes I count for example the Muses as Titaneses
I was always confused as to how the Titans gave birth to the Gods as a species but the Titans being Gods with something… extra clears that up. It’s weird that it’s never really explained what that extra thing is considering how much the ancient Greeks loved exposition but still cool
I always thought it was to establish the different ages of gods, the earliest being primordial gods, the second being the titans, and the latest being the Olympians. Idk
Probably just a coincidence or something but with a lot of European Pagan religions (and even beyond) having a lot of similarities like Zeus and Thor being sky gods etc. Is there any possible connection between the Titans and the Jotnar of Norse mythology? Even beyond the likely coincidental similarity of being associated with giant stature, they still do have some connections like both being essentially primordial "gods before the gods" and of course the usual but not always hostility between them and the main gods. So is it possible they are both derived from some earlier concept like several other facets of these mythologies?
What I dont get though is why the titan Atlas, who holds up the sky, was turned into a mountain / mountain range when Perseus used Medusas head on him, doesn't that kinda imply that his size was already enormous?
Saying titans aren’t gods is like saying that gods like Zeus aren’t gods, they’re olympians. ( although it’s pretty easy to misunderstand based on how media almost always refers to them as titans)
If I remember correctly the reason they're called "Titans" is because Uranus (their father) called them the castrators which is "Tîtanès" in old Greek because they castrated their father.

I hope this helps to understand it a bit more, as I think this might be correct. You should watch Crecganford on that topic bc he talks a lot about religion and culture of ancient (especially Proto-Indoeuropeans) people and it might help form a better understanding abt the topic :)
Have a great day
If only the ancient greeks organized all there beliefs into like big and widely used books or something and had hard definitions on things so it wouldn't come down to some future dudes being like "Well guess this means this."
Oh well...atleast the stories are fun.
It might just be a generational term referring to the group of gods who were the parents of the olympians and/or the children of the primordials
Jake tell me something.. what are gods in Greek mythology??
Don't forget the Comedic Relief Character of the group: Epimetheus, Titan of Hindsight!
I’ve always just said that anyone who is a kid of Ouranos and Gaia is a Titan, and everyone else like Prometheus just got the title from being around at the same time
I liked the old format of these videos
What about metamorphoses by Ovid story 1
What about the primordials
Its kinda similar to asatron(nordic mythology) many seem to believe that asarna was the only gods but I would argue that asarna, vaner, alver(elves) and jättarna(giants). Giants as a example is described as similar to the Asar or like similar to man. They are tho often linked with evil and trickery. Later in at least Swedish mythology they became bigger and linked with Glacial erratic. One myth from Sweden(think it was Östergötland) is that a giant threw a bolder to hit a church but missed it.
My favorite depiction of titans is from the game coromon
woah coool
Precious baby boy. 🥺
What is the difference between “Cronus” and “Kronos” I cant find anything about it but every time I almost find something they keep getting combined or mixed up.
Yes!
@@JakeDoubleyoo actually its ouranus not uranus. uranus is the roman word for ouranus.
The Jamie who is king menos from ultrakill
(It has Greeck mythology )
The amount of AOT references ITS OVER 9000!
While I know it’s incorrect in the made up religious fanfic. I personally enjoy the modern take of making titans huge with distinct attributes.
“Religious fanfic”
Idk
I think that in House of Hades from Rick Riordan's Heroes of Olympus Hecate is also said to be a titan, just like you said.
I always thought it was a generational term, since it’s mostly Cronus’ generation being referred to as titans
