Hey Jake. It's come to my attention that several people may have been correcting you on the Hydra heads thing because of a video I put up a while back called "Every Mythical Inaccuracy in Disney's Hercules". Honestly that turned out to be a mistake on my end because I was using an older version of the story as a source and didn't take into account that there is actually another Greek telling where it grows back 2.
I apologize if this brought you any grief. On the upside, I'm very happy to have been directed to your channel because this video was extremely funny and well researched! Keep up the good work!

    • @JakeDoubleyoo

Hey man, I appreciate your response!
There was no grief at all, but it did capture my curiosity for a while! And I actually spent a few days trying to figure out where that version of the Hydra came from. Aaaaaand I may have just finished recording a whole video addressing it, which now I'll need to rework large portions of 🙃 But that's on me for not thinking to just contact you directly like this 😅
What source claims the Hydra only regrows one head at a time? I actually couldn't find any.
The oldest Greek source I found on the Hydra was Hesiod's Theogony, but he doesn't actually describe its appearance at all. And everyone after him seemed to present just slight variations on the same basic idea of a serpent that regrows 2 heads each.
One notable exception was Pausanias, who believed that the "real" hydra was actually just a one-headed snake and the whole thing with multiple heads was an embellishment by poets. But as far as anyone can tell, this belief of his wasn't based on a surviving literary source.
The only thing I could find with the Hydra you described was D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths. But that book doesn't have any citations, so I was left to assume it was just a creative liberty they took. 🤔

@@JakeDoubleyoo D'aulaires Greek Myths is indeed one of my sources. But the other one is a bit different.
See I read D'aulaires as a child and, as you know, it describes the Hydra as "no sooner had he knocked off one head than a new one grew in its place". That made me curious as a kid because I new of the multiple heads version from Disney.
Some years later, I was in Europe visiting family and I got a chance to actually go to Greece and visit a large ruin/museum there. They had a gorgeous ancient ceiling artwork of the labors of Heracles and the museum label also said that the Hydra regrew 1 each. I asked the tour guide about it and she backed it up saying the 2 heads thing was a later addition.
I wish I had a sample of the label for you but I couldn't find one anywhere. Unless I head back to Greece I'm afraid the trail stops here. Btw you have my full consent to quote me admitting my mistake in your video addressing it if you like.
The amount of research you do is very admirable and I truly believe your content has potential to be the next Overly Sarcastic Productions

      @JakeDoubleyoo  Рік тому +58

Well it was written by Ovid who A) wasn't Greek and B) was using it to express his personal views rather than Greek values. So no, I wouldn't consider it to technically be a *Greek* mythology source.
Buuuut I'm not above pulling from it if it can make the narrative more interesting, like with Medusa's backstory in my Perseus video.

    • @sonofcronos7831
      @sonofcronos7831 Рік тому

There is no such thing as reliable. Mythology is fiction so anyone can come up with their own story. And Ovid cant be really ignored because he provide a lot of details that we still use in rettelings of the myth that the greeks did not provide, so there is no reason to not use him to get details. Altrough he like most romans have a more negative view of the gods than the greeks have so we need to have this in mind.

Roman Mythology is just Greek mythology, literaly. The roman gods are a mixture of estrucan and latin gods (Mars, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn), and just alternative names to some gods (like Hades is Aita), and some they dindt even bother (Apollo is still Apollo). And all backstories of this gods are the exact same as the greek ones. For example Mars was an agricultural and war god, Ares was the closest to him in Greece so the romans started to say that Ares is Mars, and they took all stories of Ares and also give it to Mars, the same applies to all other gods that already existed in Rome before the syncretism.
Also they have the stories of Romulus and Remos, but that is it.

You forgot one thing about the nemean lion, Heracles tried to skin it with his knife, but it didn’t work. He then tried sharpening the knife with a nearby rock before trying again with no success. Eventually he got so frustrated that he just started bashing it with the previously mentioned rock until Athena showed up and was like “Hey Heracles, maybe you should try to skin the lion with one of its claws instead of bashing it with a rock.” And to Heracles’ surprise (and later, his cousin’s horror), it actually worked.

Funny thing about Hera feeding Heracles: he bit her teat hard enough to cause milk to spray and enough for her to chuck him at the ground like a Football at Touchdown. And that's how we got the Milky Way.
    Myths are weird.

I hate to be that guy, but wasn't there something about the Hydra not spawning more heads every time it's beheaded and just regeneratig two of the three over and over, while the third one was immortal?

      Diodorus:
"The second labor he undertook was the slaying of the Lernaean hydra, springing from whose single body were fashioned a hundred necks, each bearing the head of a serpent. And when one head was cut off, the place where it was severed put forth two others: for this reason it was considered to be invincible"
      Pseudo-Apollodorus:
"The hydra had a body of enormous size, and nine heads, of which eight were mortal, but the one in the centre immortal ... By striking the hydras heads off with his club, Heracles achieved nothing, for as soon as one was struck off, two grew up in its place"

      One, two, three
      Turn it up
      Big wheels keep on turnin'
Carry me home to see my kin
      Singin' songs about the south-land
I miss Alabamy once again and I think it's a sin, yes
Well I heard Mister Young sing about her
Well I heard ol' Neil put her down
Well I hope Neil Young will remember
A southern man don't need him around anyhow
      Sweet home Alabama
Where the skies are so blue
      Sweet home Alabama
Lord I'm comin' home to you
In Birmingham they love the governor (boo-hoo-hoo)
Now we all did what we could do
Now Watergate does not bother me
      Does your conscience bother you?

Now Muscle Shoals has got the Swampers
And they've been known to pick a song or two (yes they do)
Lord they get me off so much
They pick me up when I'm feelin' blue
      Now how about you?
      Sweet home Alabama
Where the skies are so blue
      Sweet home Alabama
Lord I'm comin' home to you
Sweet home Alabama (oh, sweet home)

      And the governor's true
      Sweet home Alabama (lordy)
Lord I'm comin' home to you, yeah, yeah
