The Black Dahlia Murder - Matriarch Rhythm Playthrough

- Playing through the rhythm guitars of Matriarch, this was the first single from Nightbringers and for sure my quickest paced song, relentless on both hands. I've already done the solo cover on here so I figured I'd just rock the rhythm and show the riffs some love.
I used Moises to rip the drums/bass from the studio mix and played over it in one live take here. Rather than dubbing the harmonies in the background I figured I would just switch it up this time and play both parts in succession, I know some people prefer the guitar not to be masked by layers. It is always tricky to dial in a studio sounding mix with just one mono guitar but I think I've found a nice stereo spreading plugin (Brainworx Stereomaker).
This video goes along with my 40 minute lesson on Patreon explaining how to play all of these riffs and how I come up with the harmonies. You can find that below!

"Sometimes people ask us, why do we play Peavey. And it's quite simple...for brutality"
Dam straight bro lol Peavey express 112 transtube. Rr3 or charvel, with no pedal or effects. gain up, thrash button on. Send it

Excellent engineering
He's using an EVH here. I have this amp the el34 and it's quite different from a peavey to me at least. Not worse or better but different.
Dude seems pretty good at this guitar thing
First TBDM song I hear back in 2020! Proud to be a fan now
Exactly the same for me, been hooked ever since !
Nice man!@@DunlopTortex05mm
As someone who grew up during the 80’s, that crackle finish makes me very happy. 😍
Nice! This was the song that got me into TBDM, when you and Brian did a playthrough at Thomann
I love that video, Brian awkwardly straddling the V and staring into the camera
I like the shit outta that video. Esch at the end just having fun with it was cool. Ellis fuckin rips too. Love that dude.
Brian rode that V like harry potter riding a broomstick. 🤣
Watching Brian down pick the ascending run in the intro riff in that playthrough is fucked up. That's some seriously fast downpicking.
Absolutely love it, that right hand picking is so relaxed and deadly accurate like a vipers strike. 😎🤘💯
This is the groove that made me fall for you
GOD the little subtleties that you throw into these songs are nothing short of beautiful. Like how you changed up the way you played the chord at 1:01 just for that one second.
It's those small things that make it so amazing to listen to.
E open like 80s style?
@@MrKilllthelightt At 1:01 time mark it's G string on 5th fret and D string on the 7th.
It's very brief but definitely adds that "spicy flavor" to this either way catchy, mesmerizing riff.
Tone is immaculately clean
Fucking LOVE THESE PLAYTHROUGHS!
Brandon will hands down be one the best to play this genre of music of all time
I remember the good old days when I could write riffs like that but alas old age has taken their toll on these 52 year old hands. Keep up the good work Brandon cause those riffs are super tasty and catchy.
So awesome! That tone and playing are absolutely crushing brother Brandon!
I like how you alternate between your parts and Brians besides Ryans parts.
Killer Riff
this is the first thing i amwatching coming back from mh wisdom tooth removal, love this song
edit: do not remembwr typing this
IVE BEEN WATCHING YOU FOR WEEKS!
always get excited when see that blue dot pop up for a new video lol
That guitar is a thing of beauty!
Love this track! I constantly rewatch the playthrough you and Brian did on the Thomann sessions.
Just amazeballs 🖤 Hail to all BlastFiends 🦍
I think this is one of the best death metal songs of all time
This song is so sick. I always liked it but watching the playthrough gives me more appreciation. I'm gonna have to bust out my guitar and learn another Black Dahlia song.
Damn that tone is 🔥
I've watched the thomann session of that so many times
Gold and crackle. Nice!
Amazingly clean
This song made me a fan today and I wanted to see it covered
You killed it my guy
This guitar with an Ebony neck finish, my dudes....
That's so melodic and perfect !!! You look like you're loving playing it too . Total head banging song 🤘🤘🎶🎵🎶🎵
LOVE those riffs
love that guy) insane🤟
i want this guitar so much , thanks Brandon , so cool , next song to learn on my list !
Beautiful guitar!!
is the most beatiful guitar i have ever seen 😍!!!
and sounds killer in your hands!!
greetings from México.
Nice man! Thisi song is so cool! Really cool guitar tone too!
the riffage in this song is just fuckin nuts
Outstanding! I wish I could play like that! 🤘😎
Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo awesome!!
Love it my dude! Please please please include a 3 guitar instrumental song on the next album so Brian can come out and rip with you for old time’s sake!
Great skills hitting them licks I don't know what scale it is but with those triple gallops in between! What a well written piece of Metal work there
Hey Brandon- Did you have to alter the string gauge to accommodate the additional frets? Did it change the scale length?? Love that Kelly!
The additional frets does not change the scale length or anything about the guitar other than a longer fretboard and the body accomodating the access. BUT this guitar happens to have a 25.1" scale because I wanted it to feel like an HM Strat. So the highest frets are very close together
One of my fave BDM tracks.
The only metal song with so much groove it makes me want to break out in dance
My guy here clearly hasn't listened to much black dahlia
Hell of an axe!
The harmony between the 2 guitars always confused me because it sound different when I learn how to play TBDM songs ,with this playthrough I can understand exactly how 1 single guitar should sound
The parts are always hardpanned, so if you can use software to isolate just the left or right side, you can separate the parts as well
Your pinky is such an mvp my dude, mine's cramping just watching you, what can i do to help besides stretches, and continuing to practice?
It really is just practice for that IMO. When I was first learning, someone told me "not to become a three fingered guitarist" and I took that very seriously, so from day one I've always tried to use my pinky even if it was possible to use the ring finger.
You just have to do it and stick to it. I'm guessing it's a lot harder to undo the lack of using it than to just learn with it.
🔥🔥🔥
Brandon if you see this, can you please tell me if this playthrough Is what’s played in the studio version on left or right guitar tracks?Thank you brother your my inspiration,Much Love brother in Axe!

Great job. Brian plays a good fiddle.
Indeed he does! But this song was written and recorded by me
@@BrandonEllisGtr very good. I'm beyond hyped for the reply
Matriarch is tbdm finest
@@BrandonEllisGtrdamn didn't know that , i can't explain how well written this song ( and some other of course ) is , every riff are well put together , and most important for me , despite the complexity , its some riff you can sing ,same for nightbringer , i don't know how responsible you were for the writing of the song but your solo is majestic !
I can't wait to be finished with this old teethering of mine. 🗨😶🌌
yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Hola, ¿puedes hablar un poco de los pedales que usas? Me gusta el sonido que tienes. Un saludo.
Yyyeeeaaahhh!!!
🖤🖤🖤🖤
Hi Brandon, one question please, what string gauge do you recommend to play TBDM in C standard tuning, thank you very much!
Can you upload a playthrough together with Ryan ?
Arrrghhhhhhhhhh 🤘🤘
PLEASE COME TO CLEVELAND AND PLAY A PROPER VENUE
Nasty
This solo....
🌀🎸💫🎶
I mean the rhythm part is basically a solo hehe!
What´s the model series of this guitar? And... what strings size are you Using on this one?
In an IG post from a while back he said for C standard tuning he uses 11-56 gauge string. Model is a Jackson kelly.
@@Mikeisalright Thanks! I know It´s a kelly but Idk which series
@@oscarlysta6414 yea I mean I think the gold one he has here is a custom. But just google Brandon Ellis signature Jackson and the green version should come up.
Thanks to the metronome ! Otherwise he would finish the song in 1 minute !
Can someone help me learn to write riffs like this?
On my patreon I have a ton of guitar lessons breaking down my process including for this exact song! Patreon.com/brandonellis
Dragging ass for the first 30 seconds but I couldn't do it better. I just think there is a latency between recording in and play out
Sometime my neighbours ask "why do you play?? Why?"
Title is feminist propaganda
One of my favs. This track has some sick fuckin lyrics. Trevor was a fuckin Picasso with words, Fuck!! R.I.P.🖤
Тут должны быть миллионы просмотров!!!!
Да зачем) Это будет наш маленький приятный музыкальный секрет))
Love this song!
This song is a fucking monster. Melodic and tech without it being for the sake of being tech. It rips
Melhor forma de se aprender o que é metal , em todos os sentidos!
