  • In this video I will show you how to restore a rusty 5x9 utility trailer and turn it into a robust platform for two heavy adventure motorcycles. Step by step/what you need/how much it cost.
We are going to an adventure motorcycle course in Mojave Desert, California.(ZAKAR RAWHYDE)
It`s 2500 mi (4000 km) away from Florida where we live so we need a trailer.
I was lucky enough to find a rusty one in my neighbourhood and restore it myself.

Great video and advice. I was gonna put 2x6 boards but I liked your idea much better. Also cuts down immensely on the weight. And I never considered brush painting. Again, great job my man. Be blessed.

Great video. Your story of finding the trailer is very similar to mine. But I will use 2x6 boards instead of mesh to haul dirt, etc. Thanks for sharing!

How did you handle the leaf springs? Take them apart to sand or just stay on outside?
Remember to repack your wheel bearings with grease every 10k or once a year. Give or take. It gives you a chance to clean and inspect the bearings, race and the pole it spins on for any hot spots/wear & tear. Provides peace of mind while you are spinning down the road at 60 mph

Great job, except, expanded metal floor will stretch over time carrying bikes. If you want really solid, put diamond plate on, yes it is heavier, which is why wood is often used. Expanded steel is good for a short ramp. Good luck...

Excellent Work! So much better than that old trailer going to scrap. Your neighbor got $100 and some junk hauled off, you got a project to take pride in and saved yourself some cash. I have rehabbed more than a few of these small trailers as a side hustle. It doesn't look like it has any kind of identifying marks left after pulling it from the weeds - did you need to register it as a homemade trailer for your state to get a license plate? I would recommend having your welder put your name and the ID of the trailer on the tongue and a few other spots using weld in case it gets stolen.

How much do you make off your side hustle

@@DarthNihilus863 it was great during COVID, now not so much. but only because I have less time on my hands. I rehabbed about 10 trailers and just shy of 75 riding mowers in 2 years. Probably made 15k.

I noticed during the video that you were able to work on the underside of the trailer by flipping it up. I would like to do that as well, but don't know how. Would appreciate your response. Thanks.

I really like what you have done to the trailer and it didn't go to waste. But money wise it would be cheaper to buy a better used one or maybe even a new one. All the hours you've spent, time is money right.

    Hi,
What size are the trailer Wheels?
Also do you have a link on where to buy both tires? That was a good price.
    Thanks

Good job on the video. Do you have ties to Nova Scotia?

  • @jwyoungy

Is that flag a merger of the two Scottish flags? It's the Nova Scotia (Canada) flag with the exception of the white and blue being opposite. The NS flag is all white with the blue stripes and the lion. I've never seen the one you have. Nice job on the trailer btw

I'm doing the same thing. I have taken it all apart. I can't get it down to bare metal even with a chemical stripper. I guess I have to give up that goal. Does it matter? Looks like you used two primers. Can you tell me why that is? Please?

Good day, Leon here from South Africa....
I am also restoring an old trailer and was also wondering if it is really necessary to get ALL the paint of. Mine is about 70% clean. Did you manage to find an answer?
It seems that Ons should at least have all the rust out and the survaces flattened (smooth)
I'd like to hear what you found out. Cheers
