I definitely don’t have a whole tank company of basilisks ready to deploy in this “casual” game at a moment’s notice. Definitely not.

Guard Artillery is fabulous and always has been. But it's also a critical element of the guard playstyle. We don't have the super fast, super choppy, super shenanigany type units that can get around the board the way some other factions do. So, we take out the enemy by shelling them into oblivion.
Indirect is tricky. If its to strong, it makes for uninteractive, unfun games. Same with move-shoot-move. There are few things less fun than getting destroyed without any counterplay.
I would love for wg to make it more interactive. Like, make it really bad without a spotter, but really god with a spotter. That way, a good player will have better artillery, but a good opponent has counterplay by zoning out or destroying the spotters.
I agree with that, but don't we have scout sentinels for that purpose? Plus artillery is more integral to the guard than for other factions.
@@deanwalker2027 Its not about making guard better or worse, I want idirect to be interactive. The sentinel does that yes. That was my point, i want the indirect worse without, and better with a sentinel (or other spotters). I want to be rewarded for good play. Just pointing at a thing and rolling dice does not do it for me.
Which is why GW nerfing the points is clearly a poor solution, as we can see with guard it has done nothing. It's the hitting on 2s that is the issue, really indirect should never hit better than 4s, you shouldn't be able to push it to 2s and remover cover because they basically removes all the downside of indirect which is already a rule that has poor counterplay. It's a bit like making lone operatives too strong, if we start seeing lone operatives with amazing shooting that is a similar balance issue, it's uninteractive and too hard to counterplay, just has no downsides. That is the main issue with guard artillery, you can stack it so much it really has no downsides and with the rest of guard being so cheap it doesn't harm them to have 2-3-4 + pieces in the army with buffing units as they still have plenty of other units as well.
@@johannes8270 Technically guard artillery is already better with a Sentinel spotter, and worse without. That's how the mechanics work today, and why Scout Sentinels are on most lists with artillery.
But I guess you're implying, make indirect penalties even worse, but make Scout Sentinel's Daring Recon even better to offset... Thus making it all or nothing with the Scout Sentinels.
Then the opponent can focus them to cripple your artillery, or screen them out to prevent granting their bonus. Artillery great with spotter, and bad without.
@@justinmsc5 I agree with OP but guard would need more units that could be spotters or have the sentinel scout ability, maybe infantry squads with vox casters or a scout infantry/battle line squad with maybe 3-5 guards that have a lot of movement but only 80% of the units have las guns and 1 mandatory vox caster unit? That way artillery lists would still need a decent amount of infantry or something other than artillery to cover both the artillery and their spotters/scouts
Gotta love a Basilisk. Good damage and the ability to slow your enemy down. Earthshakers are good too if you have an STL 😊

The Manticore is still really good, hitting on 2's, rerolling 1's str 10, ap -2, lethal hits. flat 3 damage. Its essentially a Leman Russ Battle Tank with indirect. Into its preferred target, heavy infantry, its rerolling all hits. Emperor forbid you spec a regimental attache to give sustained hits, ursula creed for FoF, Exterminator and/or Hellhound and you get ap -3/4
Personally, I'm more interested in where Guard will go once they eventually gain more detachment options? Obviously, Born Soldiers will remain with the default detachment, which means others won't get it, or the Stratagems, but then what will they get, and if they gain a detachment that DOES focus on vehicles, or artillery, what will it do? Will any of the new ones be good enough at infantry, tanks, or artillery to be better than the one we already can use? I'm looking forward to seeing what they hive out...two weeks before they switch to 11e, but that's how Guard rolls.

Rulequestion: "Earthshaker Rounds: In your Shooting phase, after this model has shot, if one or more of those attacks made with its earthshaker cannon scored a hit against an enemy INFANTRY unit, until the end of your opponent’s next turn, that unit is shaken."
Does that mean, as long as I rolled a "hit", it doesnt matter if I also wounded the target or not for it to be "shaken"?
Been using Earthshakers and Medusas since the edition dropped. My waves of DK infantry blobs advancing behind the wall of artillery fire is just thematic as hell and actually effective. Scout sentinel swarms with infantry swarms with 5-6 artillery pieces.
That's because there are two kinds of people in this world, artillerists and targets.
I got into 40k to have a realistic amount of infantry and very few tanks, just to see everyone uses tanks
It's cheap (135pts for a Basilisk is a steal), buffed by orders, and the detachment bonus for lethals makes them really efficient! I personally think indirect fire needs to be changed as a mechanic all together.
Death guard can do something similar to this with pbc however we have to use alot of poxwalkers, nurglings and cultists

The only problem with giving Orders to artillery vehicles is that you either need to take a Tank Commander or the Lord Solar to do it and the Order can only go to a single vehicle. With vehicle orders in such short supply they’re usually better spent going to battle tanks. Orders work better for the Mortar squads and Field Ordnance Bombard units since any Officer can order them around.
My only anxiety about starting my new guard army and artillery is what FW options are gonna get dropped whenever the codex comes out. I suspect the carriage batteries aren't long for this world.
Artillery is powerfully because artillery is powerful.

Creed using fields of fire also adds +1 AP to the attacks .. Creed, Tank, and Hellhound can add +2 AP and remove cover... It is like +3 AP..
My favorite artillery is the wyvern. 😁
Underrated
Being able to buff against the penalties is the problem, hitting on 2s or even 3s is not ever really intended for indirect, nor is removing cover. A an artillery without LOS, shooting from the back of the map hitting more accurately (hitting on 2s, re-rolling 1s) than Custodes do 12" in direct LOS is basically silly and needs fixing. It should at best never be able to hit better than 4s and it shouldn't be able to remove cover. Clearly needs some changing there, rather than just points increases, like things don't need to get more expensive they need more logical rules. Basically add caveats to many of these rules that they can't apply to indirect.
I agree to some extent but the Guard isn't about having stand alone units, it's about synergy and supporting each other. Yes a Basilisk is 150, but that scout Sentinel is 60, Lord Solars Blob to order it is 255 Minimum. I've seen lists where they don't support arty and it just does nothing.

Whats everyone thoughts on Genestealer cult Brood Brothers and artillery, considering you got no order acess, and only half your force can be guard?
Decent artillery is important for Guard but it definitely needs to be reined in. Perhaps eliminate the heavy keyword. I don't think a bunch of indirect artillery hitting on 2's behind cover is a very interactive experience for the game.
Mine's the old Heavy Mortar, followed by the Thudd Gun.

I just think it’s a shame none of the lists represent the traditional view of Guard. I don’t want to buy loads of kasrkin and bullgryns, esp when I wouldn’t normally use basic Cadians. I appreciate that’s the current meta, hope it will change in the next slate.
if i have 3 EARTHSHAKER CARRIAGE BATTERY....and there is only 1 model per unit but it has the regiment keyword.... do i still need 1 order per model for take aim or do i only need 1 order for all 3 of them?? also same way with 3 baselisk... (they have the squadron keyword).... can i count them as 1 squadron of 3 units (rule of 3) or are they single and i need 1 order for each of them or 1 order for all of them??
As they are single model units, you will need an order per one
@@hammer1349 but so are the russes or tanks… they are one model units but you can have a squadron of 3 and what I have seen in games on YT is that they can get 1 order from tank commander and that will give that squadron of 3 the same order

Go watch Auspex Tactics recent vid on top Guard Armies that have won tournaments in the past month. Not to mention that Super major 7-0, all 6 of those lists run 2-3 Manticore, 2-3 Basilisk, 2-3 Bullgryns, and 2-3 Kasrkin. Sorry but it wasn't MG who shaped the meta. I still think there's a spy here. But those changes were long coming
Well...the other guy may not have artillery but he still might have deepstrike and a lictor is pretty cheap in comparison to most artillery...
I think I hope GW doesn't watch this video, and change my world!

You can be hitting on 2s as much as you want, but your number of shots will do you in. The manticore is d6+1 and the basilisk is only d6+3, thought it was worse than that. Yes they have blast. Both ideal targets for them are medium infantry which is generally 5 man units. Getting close to 500+ points for one combo is not a good thing for me. The exterminator falls off against anything in cover or a vehicle. Multimeltas are not anti-tank guns anymore. You'll probably get 1 turn of this combo before the offending support units get blown off the board. My sincerest apologies for the pessimism but im just saying it how i see it. That said, i really really miss my wyverns...
