Can't you do this with infantry squads with las cannons? I've been thinking about it for a few days. It's 130 pts. when they get out on an objective you have 20 OC, +1 to cover and a heavy weapon. I'm still learning, so maybe I'm missing something. But it seems viable.
I run mech guard, and infantry with plasma guns and lascannons are my go to. Put h. Bolter on the chimera and find a nice place to park for a turn. Getting lethal hits with that much shooting is a threat to everything.
It’s not a bad idea, but this also depends on the rest of your list. Running a bunch of sentinels and artillery? Your opponent will shoot up your chimeras first, they are harder to hide, cost more points and have OC. Running with a platoon of tanks? Now your opponent has a dilemma on hand. Sure Chimeras are softer targets and have OC, but those tanks will destroy his anti-tank and OC, Now they have to choose, go after your killing capacity or your objective capability.
Las cannons hit on a 6 in a moving Chimera. Mordian is trying to make a mechanized army list where his squishy troops shoot special weapons from inside Chimeras while rolling straight into the enemy and contesting far objectives.
@@lobo2367 you are mixing editions. In 10th heavy doesn’t have a detriment when moving. Only +1 to hit if stationary. Infantry lascannons have bs 5+, so hit on 5s when moving, 4s when stationary.
In a perfect world, the missile launcher loses the heavy keyword and goes up to bs4+ so it becomes the weapon to go for mechanized infantry. I just think it looks so cool man
You forgot to mention ripper Ogryns in a Chimera! Also the Catachan squad gets x2 special weapons (flamers) and scout for 55 points. BS 4 but flamers don't care about BS. The OG leafblower lists often ran a lot of flamers... (Platoon command squads also come with flamer + heavy flamer if you don't care about scouting.) 5(!) man Scion squads isn't cooking in a Chimera. They lack the critical mass of focused special weapons. Getting that SINGLE transported melta gun in range between ruins and a parking lot of 6 chimeras is going to be hard and often not worth it. Especially compared to what Catachans or Kasrkin does at the same range. 10(!) man Scion squads in a Chimera are just bad Kasrkins. x3 Melta/Plas *Kasrkin* PLUS x3 *Catachan/Ogryn* in 6 Chimeras; 885p~. Spend the remaining 1100p~ on Arty + Dedicated Anti Tank. That is the fire that will usher a mechanized meta into 10th.
Don't forget Bullgryn taxis for a rapid response melee threat that can actually defend objectives. Also to maximize Ogryn shooting, pack 3 squads of them in a Crasus for an alpha strike of S5 reroll wounds on 54 dmg2 shots!
Ok, something I've been mulling over, official 40K army builder that I pay for monthly says I can bring a Platoon Command Squad with a commander, a heavy weapon, a master vox, and a choice from your expected special weapons HOWEVER heavy flamer is on this list of options to replace a lasgun with. What says I cannot have a command squad in a chimera using its mobile command rule with a cheeky hvy flamer and lascannon poking out the firing deck?
Other options for embarking in the Chimera that are also not too expensive are: Ogryns - put out lots of heavy bolter like shots. Only hit on 4s but the volume is good. 135 pts for Chimera + 3 Ogryns Primaris Psyker - hits on 3s natively, has option for Dev wounds. Has a good volume of shots with D6+3 with blast if super charged. 130 pts for Chimera + 1 psyker Scion Commmand Squad - different options for loadouts for flexibility. Hit on 3s. Can do an order using the mobile command ability. Also, the unit has regiment key word so can order themselves if they need to get out, would have sustained hits too and can have a standard bearer to be strong on OC. 150 pts for Chimera + Scion Command squad
You want to get extra wacky? Platoon/cadian command squad with an ogryn bodyguard. The whole unit gets T6, you can load up on special weapons, punch people, and even throw the orders out of the chimera if opportunity arises. It's probably not crazy strong, but decently viable and REALLY surprising. The scion command squad doesn't have as good special weapons and MUCH more expensive. The only reason it might be usable is because it's regiment and can thus order itself.
@@cavemansam8400 So normally no, but in this case yes. You use the highest toughness in the unit, but it doesn't count for bodyguard units. However, neither the command squad not the ogryn bodyguard are bodyguards... somehow. If you attached some guardsmen they wouldn't benefit.
I wonder if you would ever play a chimera with a platoon command squad. Meaning you can get a lascannon and sniper if you plan on staying very far away or plasma gun combo. You seem to stay away from the good old infantry squads and platoon command. The other mega squad I love is 3 heavy bolter infantry squad 20 man + Platoon squad. with a tech engineer with servitors adding 1 more heavy bolter and plasma cannon.
Instead of Drive-by Guard, Drive-Sci Guard? GTA: Guard Tempestus Automotive? Sci-day by Rebecca Black? ( Which seat can I take?) The Shock Assault Bus? Any of these work?
My issue with Mech Guard is that I also play Space Marines. My currently prefered Marine list runs 4-5 units that can pop a T9, 3+ Sv unit each turn without questions asked. So for me is a list that relies on Chimeras to work a real gamble as I always have this gut feeling that they could be all dead by turn 3.
Personally I like putting a squad of ratling snipers and gaunts ghosts in a chimera at the beginning of the game. They have good BS, good weapons and can immediately threaten with Infiltrators.
I wonder if its a good idea to use 2 meltas and 2 HSVS? Drive up close to smash tough targets, hang back and give it FRFSRF when target hordes so it gets extra shots on a multilaser, stubber, lasgun array and 2 hsvgs? Idk if thats a bad idea or if its a bette idea to go with plasma on those? Also, i wonder if its a decent idea or not to put some catachans in tauroxes? Use them as basically a disposable screen, scout 6, move 12, advance, disembark and shoot and apply a lot of up close pressure turn 1?
You could argue that the cost isn’t 170 points and therefore comparable to a Leman Russ, but the cost is 45 points more than the Catachans they’d replace and therefore more comparable to that of a sentinel. Seems reasonable to swap out a couple of Catachan squads in your adeptacon mech list for Kaserkin.
I'm interested, but i take forver to finish my Chimera Being a perfectionnist is a pain when you paint the details of battle damages and making the metal look weathered.
What about the Platoon Command Squad in a Chimera? 70 points, built in order, and you can do 1 each of flamer/melta/plasma/grenade launcher, or swap in a HWT model.
Mordian, i think you read my mind because i have that crazy idea too, after i see your battlereport with catachan in chimeras easy controling the board i think, why catachans, why not scions, it will be better and if you have to many the enemy dont have enought anti tank, so you will be winning, i suggest you use your tournament list, just remplace catachan with scions, and see how it goes
I still think platoon command squad to have access to a hwt 2 special weapons and a plasma pistol with the ability to give an order which could help units coming in as reinforcements. Granted not a 3+bs but chimera puts in work now with what it has so I don't think the 3+ is a deal breaker. And if it's sitting on an objective that hwt will make use of heavy to help.

Ogryn Fake Taxi
In his recent chimera video he talks about both. He's got a video about using Catachans in them for mech infantry
