This is the best detailed and usable description of the pre-launch and launch operations I've seen and heard yet. By usable, I mean the CCP PLAN would copy the procedures and staff methods from your launch description to re-verify their existing figurative launch operations manual for the Liaoning launch procedure.
One of the most amazing things about UA-cam has to be how much access we have to seeing people going about their awesomeness. I don't just mean Pail, who is demonstrably awesome, but the deck crew who move this ballet of certain death with such deftness, that it makes whatever the rest of us do look like colouring farmyard animals. I've long held the belief that naval aviators are the best of the best and I thank you for the window into your world.
My oldest brother flew F-16s for 20 years and I had never really known how much of a badass he was until I started watching your videos. Granted, he never landed on an aircraft carrier, but thank you, Pail for the talk-through ride-along.
He’s right about the danger on the deck during flight ops. I was on the deck of the USS Hancock (WWII carrier) with its wooden deck and old steam catapults. I’ve also been on prop planes taking off and landing from the Hancock in the Gulf of Tonkin flying into Danang when I volunteered to go in country. I love these videos and thank you sir for your service. Go Navy and to my leatherneck brothers “Oorah!”
My late uncle was on the USS Hancock during WWII when it was hit by a Kamikaze. He was on the deck during the aftermath and kicked the dead pilots' head overboard. His name was Jack McWeeny.
I was a 12 year old kid in November 1976 when the USS Enterprise anchored in the Derwent River in Hobart, Tasmania. Our little town came alive and welcomed your sailors and aviators for 10 fleeting, glorious days. My family billeted a Chief Petty officer and navigator who took us aboard for a tour. I remember the sense of melancoly our town all felt when the Big E weighed anchor. The entire crew were celebrities, and now that they were gone, we felt a real sense of loss. Then, there was the earth shattering low level fly-over of six A-7 Corsairs and F-14 Tomcats all in formation delivering an awe inspiring and moving gesture of goodwill, and a heartfelt thanks for Hobart's hospitality. Seeing your videos in the visual detail and explicit commentary you provide is an extraordinary insight into where only angels fear to tread . And I thank you for it as a grateful admirer of what the US Navy, Marines and Army has unfailingly done, and continues to do for Australia.

Pail, my dad in World War 2 was a civilian flight trainer. He taught new Naval Aviators how to fly, i.e. get them a private pilot's license. At one time I wanted to be a Navy pilot, but my eyesight wouldn't let me, I'm near sighted. I love watching your videos, they help me learn more about aviation. The only thing I can fly is a computer, um ... Microsoft Flight Simulator X, though I do incorporate as much actual aviation as I can. Thank you.
Spent 4 years aboard the Eisenhower from 78-82 and love these videos to bring back so many memories . Spent countless hours as a slot checker on Cats 1&2 during my squadrons flight ops . Of coarse the F14 was the King back then . After receiving my back seat qualification i got to experience the rush a pilot feels on every flight . Appreciate your ride alongs . Wow Pail, just when we thought cat shot videos couldn't be any better, you come out with this! I have a co worker whose neice is part of a hawkeye crew on Theodore Roosevelt. My coworker knows zero about avaition, so last year i showed her both a cat shot, and a recovery. She greatly appreciated the info,is now a subscriber, and now understands more about what her neice is doing. These should be mandatory viewing for all Navy families! Thanks again for what you do. As a flight deck Ordie and the CAG5 Ordnance ARM/DEARM crew leader, I know the thrill of Flight Ops and I will always chime in on any Navy flight deck operations video. Awesome jam! Really appreciated the markings for clarification, and the photo showing the nose gear in tension. Please keep doing things like that. A few of the transition slides at the bit were slightly jarring/sudden, but damn, you're getting good at these. Thanks again!
Beautiful professional Naval Aviator. Appreciate the comments. Although I was surface line, I was Communications Officer on the USS Saratoga (CV-60) stationed in Mayport, FL. The CO lived in Norfolk, VA so he invited me to ride in the Carrier Onboard Delivery (COD). He allowed me to fly the COD and I have 30 hours in heaven! Fly Navy.
Pail, love the new touches! I so wanted to do what you're doing, but eyesight and a few other factors came into play. I did become a pilot and love flying, but getting launched off a carrier is a thrill I never got until you provided a way to experience it. I’m a veteran, Army 1966-69, and have loved flying since my first flight in a Beechcraft Staggerwing when I was 9 years old. The pilot let me fly it for :30, and when we landed I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life! Of course I wanted to be a fighter pilot like you, but because of my one bad eye, I couldn’t do that. So I went to a civilian flight school, got my ratings, (thank you GI Bill😏) and had a fantastic 43 year career flying for various corporations all over the world. I got to fly King Airs, Lear’s and Falcons, and also got the opportunity to became a helicopter pilot. Loved flying them-loads of fun. 😊 I’m semiretired now, working for a large simulator flight training company, and occasionally getting to fly with clients on their aircraft. Still love flying, even at the age of 76. I’ve been watching your videos for many months, and I wanted to tell you know much I have learned about carrier operations and Naval Aviation from you. Makes me proud of the many men and woman who do such a fantastic job protecting our nation. I know you’re now training the next generation of Naval Aviators, and it’s such an important job and a great responsibility. So gald you are allowed to produce these videos. You have great tone and cadence in your voice over, so easy to listen to, the information is just right as well, like pointing out the catapult safe shot lines, hadn't heard of those before. Some of the "professional" voice over is way to hyped and over the top, and just plain annoying with too much hype. Thanks for taking the effort to produce these videos and thanks DoD for allowing it.

Love it pail! Got a question about wiping out the controls. Would one of your displays show an error if a control surface didn't reach full deflection during the wipeout? Is someone on the flight deck watching for full deflection as you wipeout the controls? Thanks for the awesome videos!
I really enjoy your videos. I'm 75, was a "land based sailor." USN, 68-74, ETR-2, NAS Miramar, 70-74, I maintained GCA RADAR and TACAN. Back then carriers used CCA, and I was amazed that there seemed to be no cross training from GCA to CCA. We had 3 GCA at Miarmar, then, 2x FPN-36 QUADs and an FPN-52, the PAR section of the old CPN-4 with solid state IF in the receiver. Went to GCA school in Glynco GA, in the old wooden blimp hanger. I also had part time job at Miramar Auto hobby shop, met a lot of great guys there.
I am a former Marine and served 1973 to 1977 as a plane captain on the A4 Skyhawk. I was one of those guys outside your window directing pilots just like you. Love this stuff. Fly safe
I was thinking about the tight relationships between the aviators and the ground crew. As a Marine, it wasn't understood by anyone outside of the community, especially the Grunts. Soeaking to officers so informally, sometimes heated, was frowned upon by the 'spit and polish'. At the end of the day, Grunts would call for CAS, and VMA-533 was always 'on time and on-target'! I was an IMA avionics tech, we had pilots stopping by our shop often. Asking good, intelligent questions about how the equipment worked, how to get the most out of it, etc. Through your videos, I'm reliving some very fond memories. Thanks! Great days in NAVAIR!

I have total admiration and envy for what you do. I am an 83 old, former Air Force vet who never was stationed at a base which even had a flight line, because I was in intelligence during the cold war stationed at reconnaissance bases. My dream was to be in a flight crew which, I never realized. But to watch you and the ability and skill you possess, gives me satisfaction in knowing I was at least a part of your brother-hood. Even though the Midway only had 2 cats, it was still hectic working the roof. It's been over 40 years and I still fondly rember the hectic nature of flight ops.

I worked for 4 years active duty on the Lincoln and 20 more years as a contractor for the navy doing the same ole job as when active duty. Now I’m retired and thought I’d never say I miss the smell of jet exhaust and JP-5. Loved the ships, loved the sound of freedom ( roar of jet engines) and the harmony of the big orchestra of pilots and all the handlers working together! Beautiful show to watch.
@@torn-_shuttle123 I know when I was active on a carrier, we resented civilians so bad then all a sudden I was one of them. A lot of the crews that accompanied me never had been on a carrier and didn’t understand why they treated them with a cold shoulder but I knew exactly why !

Yes I can smell the fuel pail. For me it’s like this I joined Air cadets in the UK as a kid I got to fly a Bulldog twin seater single prop aerobatic capable. Was the business for us helmet hooked up to the radio we had a parachute on packed by none other than the Paras even the foot on my shoulder ramming that seat strap down. Yes I can buddy 😂… so why ain’t I now right? Funnily enough I was a natural at it did enough to do my solo. But that’s tough to get done before 18th birthday K/O time. My eyes are -7 short sighted. Yes I should have been one no I did not but I’m not salty I waited years to see you guys get clearance to allow me watch it here. Bust the tower for me buddy 🤣👍
My husband and I celebrated our USNA Firstie getting his 1st choice Service Assignment (Navy NFO) by watching some more Growler Jams! Ryan has wanted Growler NFO for years. His uncle was an EA-6B ECMO and my son just felt totally at home with the Growler ready room on the USS Gerald Ford this summer. Thank you for the incredible education you provide to parents who don't have any aviation background. Wayback machine memories. Only for me it was TA-4J Skyhawks and when we went to the boat I final checked on the cats. Then did any jet shop work if needed but it was rare as we went to the boat for carrier quals for around 7 to 10 days at a time and the jets went to the beach at night unless broken. Then we fixed them and they flew the next day with only a couple exceptions. AD3, VT-24, 04/77-04/81. 42.5 years since I got out. I joined the Navy to see the world so they sent me to Texas.Thank you Sir for the memories. Be safe and Fly Navy!

Beautiful professional Naval Aviator. Appreciate the comments. Although I was surface line, I was Communications Officer on the USS Saratoga (CV-60) stationed in Mayport, FL. The CO lived in Norfolk, VA so he invited me to ride in the Carrier Onboard Delivery (COD). He allowed me to fly the COD and I have 30 hours in heaven! Fly Navy.
Pail, love the new touches! I so wanted to do what you're doing, but eyesight and a few other factors came into play. I did become a pilot and love flying, but getting launched off a carrier is a thrill I never got until you provided a way to experience it. Thank you sir for your service and for giving us old guys a thrill!

I’m a veteran, Army 1966-69, and have loved flying since my first flight in a Beechcraft Staggerwing when I was 9 years old. The pilot let me fly it for :30, and when we landed I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life!
Of course I wanted to be a fighter pilot like you, but because of my one bad eye, I couldn’t do that. So I went to a civilian flight school, got my ratings, (thank you GI Bill😏) and had a fantastic 43 year career flying for various corporations all over the world. I got to fly King Airs, Lear’s and Falcons, and also got the opportunity to became a helicopter pilot. Loved flying them-loads of fun. 😊
I’m semiretired now, working for a large simulator flight training company, and occasionally getting to fly with clients on their aircraft. Still love flying, even at the age of 76.
I’ve been watching your videos for many months, and I wanted to tell you know much I have learned about carrier operations and Naval Aviation from you. Makes me proud of the many men and woman who do such a fantastic job protecting our nation.
I know you’re now training the next generation of Naval Aviators, and it’s such an important job and a great responsibility. I know you’ll do a great job there as well, and I’m looking forward to watching more videos about this stage of your career.

So gald you are allowed to produce these videos. You have great tone and cadence in your voice over, so easy to listen to, the information is just right as well, like pointing out the catapult safe shot lines, hadn't heard of those before. Some of the "professional" voice over is way to hyped and over the top, and just plain annoying with too much hype. Thanks for taking the effort to produce these videos and thanks DoD for allowing it.

Love it pail! Got a question about wiping out the controls. Would one of your displays show an error if a control surface didn't reach full deflection during the wipeout? Is someone on the flight deck watching for full deflection as you wipeout the controls? Thanks for the awesome videos!
Yes, our FCS would show an X or fault. We also have people watching the control surfaces to make sure they move.

I really enjoy your videos. I'm 75, was a "land based sailor." USN, 68-74, ETR-2, NAS Miramar, 70-74, I maintained GCA RADAR and TACAN. Back then carriers used CCA, and I was amazed that there seemed to be no cross training from GCA to CCA. We had 3 GCA at Miarmar, then, 2x FPN-36 QUADs and an FPN-52, the PAR section of the old CPN-4 with solid state IF in the receiver. Went to GCA school in Glynco GA, in the old wooden blimp hanger. I also had part time job at Miramar Auto hobby shop, met a lot of great guys there.

I was thinking about the tight relationships between the aviators and the ground crew. As a Marine, it wasn't understood by anyone outside of the community, especially the Grunts.
Soeaking to officers so informally, sometimes heated, was frowned upon by the 'spit and polish'. At the end of the day, Grunts would call for CAS, and VMA-533 was always 'on time and on-target'! I was an IMA avionics tech, we had pilots stopping by our shop often. Asking good, intelligent questions about how the equipment worked, how to get the most out of it, etc. Through your videos, I'm reliving some very fond memories. Thanks! Great days in NAVAIR!
I soloed in 1959 at 15 years old. Exhilarating, but also learned I was not cut out to be a commercial pilot. Thanks for letting me ride along!

I have total admiration and envy for what you do. I am an 83 old, former Air Force vet who never was stationed at a base which even had a flight line, because I was in intelligence during the cold war stationed at reconnaissance bases. My dream was to be in a flight crew which, I never realized. But to watch you and the ability and skill you possess, gives me satisfaction in knowing I was at least a part of your brother-hood. I worked for 4 years active duty on the Lincoln and 20 more years as a contractor for the navy doing the same ole job as when active duty. Now I’m retired and thought I’d never say I miss the smell of jet exhaust and JP-5. Loved the ships, loved the sound of freedom ( roar of jet engines) and the harmony of the big orchestra of pilots and all the handlers working together! Beautiful show to watch.

I know when I was active on a carrier, we resented civilians so bad then all a sudden I was one of them. A lot of the crews that accompanied me never had been on a carrier and didn’t understand why they treated them with a cold shoulder but I knew exactly why !

Yes I can smell the fuel pail. For me it’s like this I joined Air cadets in the UK as a kid I got to fly a Bulldog twin seater single prop aerobatic capable. Was the business for us helmet hooked up to the radio we had a parachute on packed by none other than the Paras even the foot on my shoulder ramming that seat strap down. Yes I can buddy 😂… so why ain’t I now right? Funnily enough I was a natural at it did enough to do my solo. But that’s tough to get done before 18th birthday K/O time. My eyes are -7 short sighted. Yes I should have been one no I did not but I’m not salty I waited years to see you guys get clearance to allow me watch it here. Bust the tower for me buddy 🤣👍

My husband and I celebrated our USNA Firstie getting his 1st choice Service Assignment (Navy NFO) by watching some more Growler Jams! Ryan has wanted Growler NFO for years. His uncle was an EA-6B ECMO and my son just felt totally at home with the Growler ready room on the USS Gerald Ford this summer. Thank you for the incredible education you provide to parents who don't have any aviation background. I send USNA parents to your channel when they complain that they can't understand what their MIDN is saying!

Wayback machine memories. Only for me it was TA-4J Skyhawks and when we went to the boat I final checked on the cats. Then did any jet shop work if needed but it was rare as we went to the boat for carrier quals for around 7 to 10 days at a time and the jets went to the beach at night unless broken. Then we fixed them and they flew the next day with only a couple exceptions. AD3, VT-24, 04/77-04/81. 42.5 years since I got out. I joined the Navy to see the world so they sent me to Texas.Thank you Sir for the memories. Be safe and Fly Navy!

Pail - love your videos. I was a CVN CHENG 20 years ago. You were probably in junior high! I loved watching flight ops then and still do. Your videos are great as it gives me a perspective of what the pilots do from the cockpit. I crack up every time I hear “signature move, no big deal”. I really enjoyed the video with your Dad. My son is a shipboard department head. I can relate to the pride your Dad feels seeing you serve our great nation.
