  • My Oni Girl Netflix Anime Movie Review
The long-awaited fourth feature-length film and latest work from Studio Colorido tells the story of a boy and an oni (demon) girl.
This film will be directed by Tomotaka Shibayama, who, after working for Studio Ghibli, has participated in many TV commercials and film works at Studio Colorido, where he made his feature-length directorial debut, "A Whisker Away."
Yearning to get along with others and not be disliked, first-year high school student Hiiragi finds himself unable to say no whenever someone requests something of him.
One summer day, while unsuccessfully carrying out yet another request, he encounters an oni girl named Tsumugi, who has come to the human world to search for her mother.
She does whatever she pleases and is the complete opposite of Hiiragi.
Studio Colorido presents this fantasy tale of youth that unfolds over one wintery summer.

Thought it was good in the beginning and the end was super rushed and confusing.

Very very disappointed with the overall experience. I don't recommend the movie. The story build up just left us with more questions and if you watch the movie a 2nd time it's only worse . Love the art style beautifully animated, weak story with no real reason to be emotionally connected to any of the characters. Heck even Hiiragi the main character basically forgets about "his oni girl" and the story just explains it away as only oni can enter the village but why would that be if the village is no longer hidden based off the ending. The end just brings more questions that break the logic the movie establishes in the first 15 mins of the hour plus runtime

I watched this film yesterday and, i enjoyed it. It was a pretty heart warming tale. However, i wasn't as invested in the story or the characters. I don't know what it was that stopped me from being invested in them. I feel like, it didn't dive that deep into the Oni. And i think it should have explored Hiragi's issues with his father just a little bit more. Also, maybe i just didn't understand it or i missed something. I don't think i quite understood the Snow Gods. They were once protectors of the village. Then they started eating Oni. Maybe i missed something or it just didn't explain it well enough. But overall.. I enjoyed this movie quite a bit.

Just finished it and it was an overall enjoyable experience. Not the best anime stand alone movie I've seen but not bad either. Enjoyable music, animations, and easy theme that wasn't beaten over your head with. However, I do take issue with the world building, or lack there of. Spoilers below, just had so many questions i wanted to get off my chest.
So what exactly are Oni in this movie other than people with horns that ordinary humans can't even notice, like individuals who bottle up their emotions or something? An Oni can be naturally born or be created when a human accumulates to much emotion whilst producing lots of mini-oni? They dont seem to have any other note worthy trait than the horns, which again, normal humans cant even notice unless i guess they themselves are on their way to become an Oni and bump their head with an Oni, other human characters touched the girl but never noticed her horn either.
Why was the Oni village hidden away again? I might have immediately forgotten the point if they mentioned it, but like since humans normally would never notice the Oni being, well, Oni, they shouldn't be hiding away from humans out of fear of persecution. I think the girl that it was a place for them to be themselves or something, but then again, they are literally living the same as ordinary humans but in an isolated snowy mountain village. Oni do leave apparently when given permission, if not, how do they have electricity, running water, beer, or the materials to build up the village to its current form?
They also have like a sacrificial event where a member of the community just leaves to the shrine and never return to summon the snow gods, which just make snow, eat oni and mini oni, and i guess make the pathway to the village only accessible to the oni? I dont know why they leave, maybe when the last sacrifice fully dies, so the oni need someone to leave again. If this is the case, then why did the dad, and all the other adults for that matter, refuse to tell the girl the reason her mom left. It might as well be a huge honor since it helps keep the Oni village hidden, and helps the kids understand the importance of why people leave for the sake of the village. The mom got angry for feeling left out which made the snow gods rampage, isnt that a big issue? Like apparently this has happened before based on the screen found in the tea shop, so then why keep sacrificing people if there is a chance of it back firing. I get the village needs to be hidden, but again, what are they even hiding from to justify the risk of just getting eaten by their "protectors" if the person sacrificed feels bad about missing out to live their life out with their loved ones?
That brings another question, where was the mom chilling out when the girl found her? Like a hidden hidden village where people sacrificed to or violently eaten by the snow gods go to chill? What happened to the other villagers that were eaten, did they get returned off screen? Since the mom is apparently alive and was able to go back to live with her family, then i guess the deal is off with the snow gods and the mask is gone(?)? The village elder even said that the village would need to change, so like are they done sacrificing people and will just register themselves as Japanese citizens that happen to live in a mountain and are super isolated? Or i suppose just continue to live in isolation without the aid of the snow gods, since no other humans know of the place anyway, but thats brings the question again of why they even bothered with the Snow gods to be hidden in the first place.
It kinda just makes one of the core driving points of the whole story seem redundant. No one can tell that they are onis, no one knows where they are there and its super hard to get to the place due to its geographical location regardless, so the snow gods arent needed, if they arent needed, then sacrifices arent needed and the girl woulnt have been looking for her mom and run into the protag.
I know this is all super nit picky and i guess its just a matter of suspending your disbelief for the sake of the story , but i would have liked a bit of depth in the world building. Again, i might have missed an important line of dialogue which explains some of my questions, so feel free to point them out. Overall, a decent anime stand alone movie, but there was definitely room for improvement. Time i feel was a major restraint and this story might have been more suitable as a 12 ep anime than an under 2 hour movie. Would have given more time to flesh out the characters, as well as the circumstances of the village and the whole concept of being an Oni and also exploring the main message of making your thoughts known in a reasonable fashion as opposed to bottling them up.

A for me, incredible animation, no need to be the best, just quality. Story is great too. Its just good. Must watch.
also its not an A+ because the ending left a lot to uncover. I would defently love if they did a prequel or sequel adding more into the lore of the world or something... Actually not even a part two, just like adding to it
