tip: if you homing attack a bit lower you can cheese it so when you stomp it automatically starts a drift. So the key is to do a very short hop and quick homing attack.
At max walking speed a simultaneous 90° very quick swift of the stick while holding the stomp button will get Sonic to drift no air time needed you can then alternate direction if Sonic slows down to keep his drift going no matter what thus charging the boost gauge easily.

You dont have to homing attack and stomp. Just walk forward and then quickly snap the analog stick in a direction and hold B, and it should work.
