This never gets old! Who would have thought oil would be this fascinating, even for us gear heads. But then again, what's more important for any mechanical device rotating 1000's of times a minute for hours at a time than healthy oil. Love that you're testing and comparing the big brand names, too!
A channel about one of the most hotly debated and hated subjects on internet car forums, genius! Now we just need a guy to break down the science on tires and there will be no more fights on the forums! Great work on this channel, I love it!
I worked for 12 years at The Lubrizol Chemical plant at Deer Park, TX. I was an operator involved with the processing of the Marine Diesel Oil Detergent Component. It was a Labor Intensive Process, very little automation and Lots and Lots of Filtering the end product. The Plant was built in 1955. All the Bottling was done in Channelview,TX.
I grew up in Oil City too. I haven't lived there since '81, but I generally visit once a year. I've never been partial to either Pennzoil or Quaker State brands, but have been using QS Ultimate Durability oil for the past several years.
I'm old enough to remember "Pennsylvania grade" motor oil base. All I would run in my performance engines: HD40 for air-cooled engines, HD30 for water-cooled engines.

Bob is dead and has been for some time. He was a great guy I knew him and was on bitog from the beginning. He was a Schaeffers sale rep not a chemistist or tribologist. You did not know him and are talking out your rear! The modern site is a mere shadow of what it once was. On top of that NORIA is a better place to go if you actual want to have intelligent conversations about lubrication of all kinds!
“Bob is the oil guy”. BITOG is the OG of online oil forum and advice. Truly a pioneer. He will be missed. That said, this UA-cam channel is great as well. Cheers.
My Grandpa owned a filling station with a garage in the 40's to late 60's. He used to say only use Pennzoil its made from Pennsylvania crude and that's the best. I just got hooked on your channel. Thanks
would love to see a comparitive/review of the TriboDyn engine oils. There is very little information other than specs/certifications from the manufacturer - is the cost worth it!?!. Love your content!
History of motor oil would be great, especially the landmark court case between Mobil1 and Castrol which allowed any oil (semi synthetics included) which performed like a true synthetic to be called a synthetic in the US!
GTL based oils are one of my favorites. History of the oil would likely be helpful for many people. Especially an introduction of the various oil group types for some.
@@vais3he is obviously curious why you say GTL based oils are your favorite. Is it really that hard to figure out his question based on your comment? 🤦🏼♂️🤷♂️
@@supersportimpalass very open ended question to an entire statement. Yes, I will ask for clarity before conveying my message. I’m thankful you could respond for them.

I’m waiting for the the Amsoil test!!! I will say this I ran Amsoil 2 stroke oil in my chain saw years ago and it was like a brand new saw , I don’t cut much anymore haven’t used it since, back when I tried it it was hard to find “ early 90’s lol, you or anyone reading this I have a ford 3.5 ecoboost , I want to do what’s right , I just put a quart of Lucas in my oil change, I’m going to dump it out !!!
IN the mid 1970's Smokey wrote about and tested a synthetic oil called All proof 5w-50. The article was in Popular Science magazine. He built a mild 302 Chevy and gained 20 hp and lowered oil temp by about 15 degrees. Went back to mineral oil and lost the 20 hp. He pulled the heads between tests and checked the valves etc. I called Smokey and ordered enough oil for 2 302 Ford boat engines. My gains were similar to his. I was thrilled with the results and thrilled to speak with Smokey. When i called back to reorder for another oil change he informed me that the chemist died and his son changed the formula and he didn't like it. The oil came out of Superior, Wisconsin. Recently i read that the product became part of Royal Purple.I currently use Mobil 1 15w-50 in BBC marine engines and some hiper Chevy small block boat engines that don't always have oil coolers like the BBC. The Mobil 1 15w-50 was first marketed about 1986. Always looking for the " perfect" motor oil😂 Your information adds another level of understanding, Thanks
I changed the oil in my wife's car for years. It was only when I did the first change using Royal Purple with Synerlec (not the API certified oil) she came back and asked what did I do to the car. She said it drove better, quieter and engine felt stronger. She thought I did some kind of tune to the engine. I told her all I did was an oil change. That experience sold me on RP and I used that in my own car and the engine did feel stronger.
This is definitely one of my favorite channels on UA-cam! No other channel is doing what the motor oil geek is doing for us and showing us the actual science and not just repeating what the motor oil company is saying about their own oil! 👍👍👍
It's very obvious to many of us that you're speaking the truth based on science. So I think we would all love to see an episode, or more, on the history of motor oil I first became interested in motor oils when I bought my first brand new motorcycle in 1986. I wondered why there were car motor oils and motorcycle motor oils and wondered if I could run the cheaper of the two in my bike. I was also told at the time to not run synthetic oil in my bike because it would make the seals shrink causing oil leaks. Low and behold, against that original piece of advice, I did and actually started to see some oil seeping out of some seals which immediately made me switch back to conventional oil. That told me at the time there were significant differences in certain types of oils, but I'm also now aware that the additives are just as important, if not more, than what the base oil is made from. I'm so glad I found this channel and hope to get all of my questions answered over time as I watch future and past episodes. Thank you!
-My thoughts on oil and related topics : -My favorite oil is the cheapest often Costco supertech or Amazon. - I like Penzoil ultra platinum, but only when it’s on sale - Wix filters always. -I’ve found that using a fumoto drainvalve and changing the oil early works wonders if you’re looking to own a car long term like 200k miles -4k-5k in mileage is the sweet spot for changing oil within 6 months
Warren distribution stuff is low and group 3 and you’ll get more metals than Pennzoil platinum ultra, which is one of the best off shelf oils. 200,000 miles no problem with the Warren oil and wicks filter. If you want to go to 400,000 miles better use platinum ultra and Fram ultra or Amsoil filters. In some engines certain Amsoil oils perform better than platinum ultra, but you need to do analysis trending if that is the case with your application.
I use Pennzoil Platinum 5w-20 in my 07 Camry (only 68K miles) and 0W-20 (112K miles) high mileage in my 13 RAV4, I do 3000 mile oil changes on both cars using OEM filters. I am totally satisfied with the Pennzoil natural gas derived oils. My 07 Toyota Camry is a known oil eater, Toyota used low tension rings on the pistons from 2006 to 2009. I purchased this car in March 2023 with 61,100 verified miles on the vehicle (real good CarFax report). When I change oil it takes about 4.8 quarts to get to the fill line on the dip stick and around 2200 miles I have to pour the rest of the oil left in the 5qt jug to get it back to the fill line. I did 3 oil changes on it so far (little over 10,000 I put on it over the last year), all three change sequences were identical. I use 5w-20, the oil pass through over the rings is minimal, on the RAV4 there is NO oil pass through over the rings, I never have to add oil to that engine over the 3000 mile change interval.
I use pennzoil ultra-platinum in my 2017 v6 Tacoma for the last 2yrs. It is fantastic. Truck idles so smooth. Can't even tell it's running and has over 127k miles on it.
Oh this is awesome! I use both of these oils and I’ve often wondered the differences since they are both SOPUS products. Thanks so much for taking the time to properly inform fellow oil nerds like myself! I am really looking forward to your motor oil history video!
It’s still damn good oil and at a great price. Their Ultimate Protection is as good as any advanced synthetic oil out there and can be had for $22 at Walmart. Just a dollar more than SuperTech or Kirkland. For a 5,000 OCI , it just can’t be beat.
@@kalani1987 Which is why I bought it and I keep my cars "forever"...26 yrs. now with my daily driver. No issues. I also ignore the time interval between changes.
It’s good to hear you emphatically state IT’S NOT THE BRAND THAT MATTERS it’s WHAT’S IN THE BRAND. Too many car guys love to bluster on about what they always relied on “back in the day” because they had X number of cars run 250,000 miles without a hiccup using “good ol’ reliable ____”. I grew up loyal to conventional Quaker State in my first 30 years of cars (80s, 90s, 00’s). Then when everything changed and little GDI engines with turbos became the new normal I relearned how to find the right oil for each vehicle I bought based on its individual engine. I quickly learned brand is not what matters most anymore. Thank you for your analysis & advice on the samples I’ve sent to SpeedDiagnostix, and thank you for making these videos and continuing to educate!
First time seeing your video explaination. As an engineer (and old mechanic), I enjoyed it. I've beed using Pennz since the '70's and ling ago noticed customers who used QS in their cars tended to have paraffin gumming things up. Those who used Pennz, Valvoline or Castrol stayed clean. Much agree with the one who pointed out that oil change FREQUENCY is most important. Do the math and it would take a lot of " extra" oil changes to equal the cost of an overhaul...even one you do yourself...Same goes for paying a bit more for a Wix or quality oil filter.
Such a pleasure to listen to a fellow engineer. Having helped application engineer and sell API machinery governed by 2000 pages of enduser specs and Shell DEP specs, I can say for sure that their ultra tough project requirements tend to yield higher quality and consistency, and that Ultra certainly helped my car reach 400,000 miles. I did not know Shell owned them and the additive company until now....very interesting!!!! I consider myself fortunate to have met Shell engineers in a meeting.
I met Speed at a Carlisle seminar15 years ago, I believe He was working for Joe Gibbs? I asked a few questions wearing my AMSOIL hat & t-shirt? He seemed to not like me?

It would be really cool to see a video going over OEM diesel oils such as John Deere, AGCO, CNH, Kubota, CAT vs aftermarket like Rotella T4, T5, and T6, Delvac, and Delo. Would be nice to know what blends OEMs think work best in their equipment
Thank you Lake! I recall in 1991 after I built a 351C engine for street a drag usage after break in I chose Torco 5W-40, the dealer provided me with brochure's on the history of the Torco brand going back to the post WWII era. They spoke of Gus Johnston, Bob Lancaster who invented the first 20W-50 racing oil in 1948 long before SAE identified this viscosity. He was racing a Ariel Square Four at El Mirage dry lake in California and he needed to find a way make the engine live through a race.
Yes, I agree, and ai do miss beast, owned it 30 years. The guy I sold it to pulled the quench heads and put open chamber on it, big mistake, but yeah they can really make a lot of power.@@save16thave
I’d be interested in seeing the difference between CVT fluids. Such as Nissan brand NS2 vs Havoline, Valvoline, Castrol. I see Castrol sells at Walmart a universal CVT fluid that works in automatic transmission too. I wonder how safe it is to use in a CVT?
Do the history of oil. Can you see if you can get your hands on some old Arco graphite oil. Curious what’s in that old oil. My Dad thought that was greatest stuff ever. Love the channel.
Man. Can you just do an motor oil 101. GTL, group 3, pao, etc. what the differences are. How they’re made. What the pros and cons of each are. That’d be a great reference! Thanks!

Lake, I love all your videos. It's funny how many people blow off your advice, saying they don't trust random Internet dudes. They have mo clue of your knowledge and expertise. I just give up trying to teach people, and absorb as much as possible from your videos.
@garyszewc3339 It's the "random" part that loses credibility. One needs to read what they write then determine "does it pass the 'smell test"" and does it add up? Performance beats credentials every time. Having credentials, passing the "smell test" and "speaking the truth" are the marks of a true professional.
I've been using the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum synthetic for several years now instead of the Motorcraft brand for my Ford vehicle. Seems like my vehicle consumes less oil between changes with the Pennzoil. I look forward to seeing your evaluation results for your Porsche using the Pennzoil.
When I got my 2001 F450, Pennzoil made the only 5w20 synthetic I could buy on the open market. Others later became available. I believe Honda used the same oil.
Agreed. Eneos and Ravenol are two other brands I'm curious about. One way Lake could really set his channel apart from most others is by making videos on foreign brands that aren't common here.

I also can't wait for your history of motor oil video from Lake Speed Jr. I am a huge fan of him and his cutting through all the fog of motor oil. I am a retired 58 year old IT geek with a deep car history who geeks on all this stuff. My new favorite thing is thowing up lab analysis numbers on brands in oil debate forums. I truly 150% agree with Lake's statement, brand means little, it's all in the oil chemistry but you'll always have tons of hard core brand only loyalist on oil debate forums that feel better spending $12 a quart when the lab results show near identical numbers with $6.
@vinniemorciglio4632 Realize that OEMs fill their equipment with "break-in oil". They often use a moly disulfide cam lubricant and likely other additives in larger quantities than one would want to maintain. They also may well use a different blend for maintenance after the first oil change or two.
I’d be comfortable using either, but I do use Platinum. I’ll keep using it. I believe in top notch oil, I use a group 4 oil in my motorcycle, and the longevity shows. I agree, it’s not the brand, it’s the chemistry.
Great video, when two oils meet the same dexos 1 gen 3 specification, how would one oil backup with more additives significantly worse than the other one🤔?
Highly anticipating that video with your Porsche and Pennzoil Ultra Platinum oil analysis after 3K miles. Very interesting to hear your opinion about its performance and also your interpretation of its chemical and physical properties/coefficients after oil analysis. This is definitely a top content!
Hi Lake. Love your research & explanations. Question/Request: Can you explain why the top of the line Pennzoil "Ultimate Platinum" does not appear to meet Dexos1 standards, while the "Platinum" does.... at a considerably lesser price point? Pennzoil's back of the bottle comparisons simple show the difference as the "Ultimate" is for higher performance/protection than the regular "Platinum". Seems odd to me that a better performing, better protection & higher priced "Flag-ship" oil would knock itself out of GM specs..... Is it too good for GM? LOL. Thank you for your thoughts and explanations. I enjoy your channel!
When you pulled out that FTIR, you blew my mind. Hats off. That's one expensive test to run. Also thanks to your videos, I'm switching to SP for my GDI engine. To shed some light on GTL. I was with Shell during the period it launched. So in the middle east, hydrocarbons wells are richer in gas to liquid ratios compared to wells at say America or off the south china seas. For years refinery in the middle east have flared off the excess gas as by product (they were too abundant to consume locally and too 'sour' to sell to Europe). With GTL, shell figured out a way to convert the by product to base oil generating revenue. The newly created raw material was then pushed globally to America and Asia. (Wells in both of these regions has cleaner gas (less sulphur) mostly sold as LNG to nations with stringent environment emissions limits on their energy (IE Europe /Japan) From memory circa 9yrs ago, shell's semi syn was made of BaseOil 4 whereas the Ultra Fully Syn range was from BaseOil 6 blend. Tonight, I still wonder if the GTL molecular structure is less stable compared to other higher base oil groups? Chemical wise a C10-C11 hydrocarbon bond strength would be similar once created regardless of the C3-C4 that made it. But personally from using GTL Vs Non-GTL oil, I noticed that GTL blend oxidises faster.
I've had nothing but great success in the past 27 years with Pennzoil natural base oils and quality Wix oil filters. My current Hyundai daily driver is almost 13 years old and is just shy of 90,000 miles, I bought it new. It starts, runs, and drives perfectly every day and sounds completely happy. On other cars, even ones I bought new, I tried the expensive synthetics and had nothing but problems with them. I can't completely blame the oil though, it's critical to follow the instructions of the engineers who designed the engine and use what they intended to be used for lubrication.
Yes history please!!!!!!! Lubrizol plants in niagara falls Canada. Lots of the valvoline I ran came from there. Was interesting to drive through the plant. When they blended oil was usually with 50lbs bags of raw additives into a vat. Would mix overnight then would get tested and adjusted. There was a small window of variance between batches.
Any chance about transmission fluid. There's little said on the breakdown of the plethora of different types that are out there. Your the man to do it. If the engine is the heart the tranny is the soul.
I would certainly love to see the history of pennzoil and Quakerstate. I live in Pennsylvania and can’t find much history on those companies. I do like the pennzoil ultra platinum and I feel more confident now finding this channel and seeing that the marketing on the bottle isn’t b.s.!! Thanks!!
I'd be interested in a motor oil history video. I didn't know that Pennzoil and Quakerstate were both owned by Shell. Your oil analysis reports go into much more detail than Blackstone's. I like how your reports give an explanation of the purpose each additive performs.
Through my experience in the field of oils and my review of the comparisons and videos published on the Internet, I can say that this video is the best I have seen in my life. It touched on all the topics that affect those who work in the field of manufacturing oils.
An educated populace facilitates innovation for advancement in industry. I work at a large car parts supplier, and you have helped me better serve my customers; however, I would be watching your videos even if I wasn't employed there. Impartial information on motor oil is very rare, and can be nearly impossible to find when factoring in brand bias exclusivity. I appreciate you putting in the leg work to actually spread this knowledge, and your effort in including all the major brands. I would love to see oil filter brand comparisons in the future.
Use Pennzoil Platinum 10w 30 in a 2002 Buick Lesabre Custom with a 3.8 liter engine. It had a long life with AC Delco 10w 30. I continued to use the Mobil for a few changes and it ate it up. With the Pennzoil Platinum I hardly have to top it off every two weeks, unlike the Mobil or Quaker Ultimate I was using.
My 07 Toyota Camry is a known oil eater, Toyota used low tension rings on the pistons from 2006 to 2009. I purchased this car in March 2023 with 61,100 verified miles on the vehicle (real good CarFax report). It is sad the previous owner did not take part in the program Toyota had they could have had the ring issue fixed for free at Toyota. Thing is as time goes by it will get worse with a high risk of clogging up your Cat converters. It would be wise to have the rings changed. Wekll worth the money that engine with the new rings is a bullet proof engine that will easily last 300k miles if maintained. Do not wait too long because if you do the damage will get worse so get it in for repair before you have to rebuild that engine.@@oveidasinclair982

I drive past the former Quaker State corporate headquarters on my way to work ever day. Right up the road from there was the original Pennzoil refinery. I also drive past what used to be the Pennzoil research center on my way to work every day. When those companies were bought out by Shell, a HUGE amount of talent left the area when they shut everything down. I'm sure they make great oil, but I am having a hard time buying any of it since they left. Probably just being overly stubborn and bull headed, but I knew a lot of good people that lost good paying jobs and pretty much everything they owned in the aftermath. Some started over again, usually by moving out of the area. Many never recovered.
Just go with Valvoline ! An independent American owned company out of Ashland Tennessee. Their advanced synthetic offers great protection and is priced competitively. Their Extended protection is excellent, comparable to Pennzoil Ultra and costs less.

I remember reading about that oil in his book.
The oil cost $5.00 a quart, back in the 1970's and the 302 oil pans were oversize
and held 7-8 quarts each engine..

Wow, thank you!
It's very obvious to many of us that you're speaking the truth based on science. So I think we would all love to see an episode, or more, on the history of motor oil
I first became interested in motor oils when I bought my first brand new motorcycle in 1986.
Thank you!
Thank you so much for all the information and the video.

-My thoughts on oil and related topics :
-My favorite oil is the cheapest often Costco supertech or Amazon.
- I like Penzoil ultra platinum, but only when it’s on sale
- Wix filters always.
-I’ve found that using a fumoto drainvalve and changing the oil early works wonders if you’re looking to own a car long term like 200k miles
-4k-5k in mileage is the sweet spot for changing oil within 6 months
Warren distribution stuff is low and group 3 and you’ll get more metals than Pennzoil platinum ultra, which is one of the best off shelf oils. 200,000 miles no problem with the Warren oil and wicks filter. If you want to go to 400,000 miles better use platinum ultra and Fram ultra or Amsoil filters. In some engines certain Amsoil oils perform better than platinum ultra, but you need to do analysis trending if that is the case with your application.

I did 3 oil changes on it so far (little over 10,000 I put on it over the last year), all three change sequences were identical.

(Wells in both of these regions has cleaner gas (less sulphur) mostly sold as LNG to nations with stringent environment emissions limits on their energy (IE Europe /Japan)
From memory circa 9yrs ago, shell's semi syn was made of BaseOil 4 whereas the Ultra Fully Syn range was from BaseOil 6 blend.
Thanks for sharing! I'll keep an eye on the oxidation levels in my used oil samples from these oils.

Thank you so much!
Hard to beat the chemistry vs speculation vs real life comparisons done by Todd of Project Farm. In my opinion, The Motor Oil Geek is an advanced step up in the details of how and why and very, very interesting!
Thanks!
YES please do an episode on HISTORY of oil. I would love to see the introduction of synthetics

I'm curious if speed Diagnostics if it's possible to color code the additives in the oil examination or Diagnostics reports depending on the company they're manufactured by
That’s an interesting idea, but it would be very difficult to do with a high level of accuracy.
@@themotoroilgeek have you been to a tour at the Amsoil oil production facility
Just discovered your channel. Fascinating and very informative content. Thanks for these
Super interesting videos 👍🏻 Can you please make a video on transmission fluids as well like difference between OEM transmission fluid and Generic like Valvoline MaxLife ATF
Thank you🙏🏼
Add the Red Line DT6 to analysis too which is their Dexron VI Mercon LV product
The best oil is by whoever changes it the most.
I agree changing oil is more important. Frequency is everything.
Agree. It's a machine. Put oil in it. Change it once in a while...and don't drive like an idiot. You'll be fine.
Not really. The best oil is the one that has the best wear protection and sludge prevention and ALSO gets changed on time.
@@klauswilson4687 Nope, the additive package is everything.
@@lonniebeal6032There are folks with a LOT of miles on stuff like Kirkland and SuperTech synthetic. OG poster is correct. Keep it changed and clean without going overboard. If it's not a super car, get realistic and drop the super dee duper veja veeta vitamin oils. People are making obsession into a hobby. It's neurotic imo.
I ran Penzoil 10w40 in my FEs. Never lost a cam. And at 259,000 miles I tore it down and did even need to bore it! But I did.020 over for the forged pistons and the cork gaskets had a thick layer of sweat, but inside it was like new. Amazing. That old Penzoil 10w40 was really good!
FEs and Pennzoil!
Honest to goodness, this is a great channel! For the longest time in my younger days, I chose engine oil based upon what my favorite teams used because, “if it works for Dale/Rusty/Mark, then it works for me.”. Then, I spent time in the Air Force Propulsion Lab and learned what REALLY goes on with engine lubricants.
Lake, you are performing a public service. I believe it would be awesome to have you as a feature analyst before an event like Daytona or Indy to share some of your knowledge with viewers. While I know you could never go on there and give opinions on brands, you could certainly talk about fundamentals in a way that would resonate with millions, from car guys to noobs.
Subscribed.
What parts and lubricants a racing team uses are closely guarded secrets. The various names of auto products we see plasters to the side of a race car is just advertising.
Love your channel! Please do a video on history of oils 👌🏻

Yes sir I would love more history and content

Lake could you do a video on Valvoline's new oil Restore and Protect?
Thanks for the suggestion!
@@themotoroilgeekplease let us know your thoughts on Schaefer's oil products? I have asked this several times with no response. Please advise. Thank you. Need advice on Schaefer oil
Its awesome to select based on chemistry, but most of us done have the lab resources or subject matter expertise to make an educated decision. These videos certainly help with the expertise (Thanks!), but the chemistry is a mystery clouded in an enigma of marketing. Why I've been running Mobil 1 for 35 years - I've had good luck at tear down.
Finally, History of Oils - Yes please!.
Ok you got me. Having been a propulsion mgr in my previous life, I’ve always been big on maintenance. We’ll be watching.
Thanks!
super interested
Everything all the time yes

Amsoil ALWAYS tests the best and Pennzoil is ALWAYS a close second... Had a 2011 Mustang GT that was drag raced regularly and used Pennzoil Platinum 5w-30. Car had over 225,000 miles on it when i got rid of it... Engine had never been opened up...
Thanks for the video and thanks for the education. At 74n years young, someday I hope to be a "know it all".
Please do a history of oil. Also want to see the results of the porsche. Thanks for doing these video! I have learned so much...
You got it!
Any word on that new Valvoline Restore and protect oil? Considering running it in my vehicle but not sure how effective Valvoline's claim of removing *100% of deposits*
Can't wait for the results on pup versus QS.
