What Life Was Like for a Medieval Crusader

- Like any great conflict, the Crusades have been the subject of myths and misinformation for years. While few still believe the propaganda that justified the fighting, various false facts have proliferated over the years, concerning everything from the motivations of the Crusaders to their reception in Arab lands.
It's easy to understand how both storytellers and audiences get swept up in the romance of the Crusades. The epic sweep, the clash of cultures, and the stunning aggression still thrill us today. But what was life actually like for a medieval crusader? Of course, the answer varies. The wars were radically different experiences for a noble knight than they would be for a common farmer.

Saladin showed his graciousness once when he was engaged in a battle with Richard Lionheart. Saladin watched Richards forces be surrounded by his men, expecting Richard to surrender. Instead Richard and his outnumbered men fought on and they did so valiantly. In fact Richards horse had been killed and he fought on the ground in a very vulnerable position. Saladin was very impressed, when his men broke he wasnt even upset. After the battle Saladin sent Richard one of his favorite horses to replace his recently lost one.
Respect between strong adversaries is badass.
Both are so badass
He also sent him ice packed in sawdust, to cool his fever when he heard Richard had fallen ill.
Damn, that’s class
And when Richard sacked one of his estates Richard literally bought copies of his deco and sent them to saladin
...in fact they never met personally...!

"Is that Jerusalem?"
"No clue, but let's sack it and go home"
they nvr did
@@alizain5420 yes they did
Constantinople was sacked for prolonged back stabbing, served them right.
I recommend educating yourself.
The Crusader (and to an extend venetian) weren't paid by the Byzantines. That's why they sacked Constantinople.
Century later the Byzantine hired Turkish mercenaries, who weren't paid (again). And they sacked towns in Thrace region.

Q: What life was like for Medieval Crusaders
A: probably not that long
Or very smelly, bloody, sunburnt and mad stressful
@@JGreen1 dont forget the mosquitoes
@@JGreen1 Depends on which crusade, for the knights of the 1st Crusade life was pretty dam excellent, it was their kids and grandkids that had issues
@@AeneasGemini Wtf are you saying? Half of them died already on their way to Jerusalem in the First Crusade. They didn't have food so they started hunting muslim civilians and eat them. They didn't even have wood in the area around Jerusalem to build siege engines so they had to walk kilometres to just get some wood to build 2 siege engines. The First Crusade was extremely hard

Hello and greetings from a small town in Indiana! Sadly, I have to tell you that my husband and I lost our only child, Eddie at age 21, in a car accident in August 2020. Im only telling you this to let you know your videos have been a real lifeline for me!! I’m a huge history buff and enjoy them SO much. Your voice is calming and your humor makes me smile . I don’t know if you will read this...but I wanted to thank you just the same. Thanks again and keep fighting the good fight. ❤️ much love- Julie

King Phillip II of Spain??? Children’s Crusade??? They’re centuries apart.
i think he meant Phillip II of France

@@steelyphil4859 But it was illustrated by portraits of the Spanish one
@@ulutiu The channel is known to take a shall we say liberal approach to the historical accuracy of the illustrations
7:00-ish How can they have asked Philip II of Spain? The Children's Crusade happened around 1200... 300 odd years before Philip II ruled over Spain.
Edit; Perhaps you meant Philip II of France?
Are you saying that “weird history” made a mistake? Noooo. I don’t believe it. The channel that once claimed William Shakespeare wrote a speech for Henry V at Agincourt? No way.... 🙄
that's a big mistake.
weird history does a video about the wives of henry viii- mentions he was married to Bond Girl Dr Quinn Medicine Woman
Phillip Augustus
Yes, they meant the french one we get it
I have heard so many stories of medieval knights falling in to streams or rivers in their armor and drowning because of it. I think it even pre-dates them as well with Constantine's victory at Milvian Bridge. Even to this day the armor that soldiers wear doesn't have the best quick-release features although they do have some.
Well most ofthem couldn't swim. Which doesn't help. There are however reenactors who managed to swim in fullplate or chainmail armor.
I just love this channel. You guys kill it.

03:24 A crusader wearing a 19th Century British pith helmet. Now that IS weird history!
You used (at 7:12) an immage of Philip II of Habsburg, king of Spain from 1555 to 1598, over three centuries after the children's crusade.... maybe you meant to use a picture of Philip II of France (also known as Philip Augustus).
A+ video!
Fascinating history about their culture!
Thank you. Always something interesting.
King Philip II (1212) was king of France, not Spain. The king Philip II of Spain was the son of emperor Charles V (the first person to have an "empire where the sun never sets") and lived in the sixteenth century. That's also the person depicted on the paintings you used in this video.
You mentioned war dogs in your Henry the 8th video, I'd love to see a video about different uses for dogs through history.

No, ancient Romans used oils along with wooden scrapers. The barbarians, however, did use soap, made from butter and/or fat, which the Romans considered to stink.

Could the next video cover the history of the Knights Templar, up until their dissolution?
This is great and now I wanna know what's it's like to be a roman at the end of the Byzantine times.
Or the beginnings of the Dark/Middle Ages. Either way sounds very interesting.
@Max K they were still roman, they are basicaly greek romans, but still called themselves roman
Max K
They called themselves Romans and it was only sources after the dissolution of the empire that referred to them as the Byzantines
Kind of like how it feels to be an American in 2020
@A H I know all that but imagine putting yourself in the boots of a normal byzantine soldier or citizen. Not a general or anyone famous. Just a normal Joe/Jane at the time. I want to know what they had while living at that time.
I've heard that Saladin's mercy was overhyped, that he wanted to massacre Jerusalem after taking it but agreed not to because the commander of the Garrison there threatened to destroy every Islamic Holy Place in the city if it's people weren't spared. Even then Saladin still enslaved those who couldn't pay a ransom.
Who told you that. The toothfairy?
Saladin showed mercy, but notice he is the only example ever given of such a thing. Many more instances of no mercy being shown (on either side).

If at all possible, I would like to learn about how African-Americans got their last names after slavery. My last name is McKinney but I'm not from Ireland or Scotland. So.....
A lot of African Americans after slavery kept the names of their former slave-owners, and considering that those slave-owners were descended from people who migrated to the Americas from all over Europe, including Ireland, probably explains why you would have that name

Richard The Lionheart defeated Saladin in every single engagement.
wow you are right that is why he left without capturing Jerusalem and that is why the whole middle east we still Muslims and till the current time dumdum
@Erfan Uddin Ok, first off, Richard voluntarily abandoned the attack on Jerusalem even though he marched to within sight of it, Reason being he didn't think he could hold it after the attack which would of succeeded as the Muslim defenders were already starving inside. Take a look at the only major battle Richard fought against Saladin, the battle of Arsuf (7 Sept 1191), Richard wiped out Saladin's forces it wasn't even close, Saladin lost 7, 000 men, Richard 700. Not to mention Acre quickly fell to the crusaders once Richard arrived. There is not a single battle that Richard lost to Saladin. Richard also captured Jaffa from Saladin...TWICE!!

It really wasn’t as cracked up as Assassin’s Creed made it look. Being raised as an Assassin, or a “Hashashin”, meant that you were constantly beaten and underwent rigorous combat and stealth training from a very young age, basically being brainwashed to be a killing machine. You were drugged constantly and developed an addiction as a result, and then taken off drugs and being put in a cage for a period of time only to lose your mind because you weren’t provided with drugs and you were forbidden to speak or make contact with any women. By the time you were considered ready for combat, you were basically a high and horny fucked up killer who was messed up in the head and could die at any moment.
