(Short story time here) When I was in kindergarten I went to a costume ball dressed as Richard the Lionheart. Of course, I didn't know who he was, my parents bought me the costume and told me it belonged to a brave king, whose heart was that of a lion. I remember being so happy and proud, I just kept saying over and over again that I am Richard the Lionheart! Since then, his image always sticked with me and I like to think that somewhere, far away from here, I made him smile

Just visited the castle with which he was held for ransom in Austria. A mere ruin now, but you feel the history standing in there, overlooking the Wachau.
“Lionheart” added to his name is certainly contributing to his world renown fame, without which he probably would not stand out in history to the extent in which he still is. There were countless other monarchs leading countless war campaigns just like him, yet his character and popularity will remain amongst historians’ favorites. My parents named me after him, and as a child I felt as if I had to live up to the name as a life long personality empowering benediction. The documentary piece presented was very enjoyable to watch and I would love to know more about him. A fascinating fact of his time is probably the unbelievable lack of human life’s value compared to today, and how an average man’s life, when destined to military service was an inevitable early painful gruesome death. What I would like to find out the most about him in more detail is how did Richard the Lionheart stand out amongst his counterparts in bravery and leadership, was he a bold and fearless warrior in battle, was he a skilled fighter or rather he was not afraid to send his soldiers to fight? Being a king on a battlefield must have been a rather protected position so I would think this question is very relevant. His early passing likewise shows that only after so many campaigns, battles and sieges it was a crossbow that took his life, which was the most effective long distance weapon of the time. The fact that his death was a result of a rebellion against him would indicate that the heart he had would not be as appreciated today.
I really enjoy this biography on Richard 1, the Lion heart. They do miss the point about the execution of the garrison at Acre. Muslims did not blame Richard but Muslim records show that even in the Muslim eyes the fault was Saladin. He agreed to a settlement that he wouldn’t fulfill. From then on Saladin had a problem garrisoning a city. The soldiers didn’t want to be captured and be sacrificed since Saladin was not trustworthy in their eyes. This is an important fact that was skipped over. But it’s a fun biography.

A king dying of an easily treatable wound by current standards, the king's brother dying of dysentery which can be easily treated today even in third world countries, constant wars etc. I can see why it seems great to have lived in the high middle ages because it has been romanticized by chroniclers and historians, but believe me, you would not like to be a regular person living in these times. So, the major understandings that I take from this very very interesting and informative documentary is that a) if we are not in an alliance with France we are fighting against them and once we finish fighting them we a ruling them until we are allies again b) the situation in the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern regions is the same today as it was in King Richards crusader years and c) the whole of this era and to the present day are eerily similar, War then Peace and War again. I don’t think we will ever see true peace in the world. I really enjoy this biography on Richard 1, the Lion heart. They do miss the point about the execution of the garrison at Acre. Muslims did not blame Richard but Muslim records show that even in the Muslim eyes the fault was Saladin. He agreed to a settlement that he wouldn’t fulfill. From then on Saladin had a problem garrisoning a city. The soldiers didn’t want to be captured and be sacrificed since Saladin was not trustworthy in their eyes. This is an important fact that was skipped over. But it’s a fun biography.

Are you sure? A king dying of an easily treatable wound by current standards, the king's brother dying of dysentery which can be easily treated today even in third world countries, constant wars etc. I can see why it seems great to have lived in the high middle ages because it has been romanticized by chroniclers and historians, but believe me, you would not like to be a regular person living in these times. And the black plague was around the corner just for good measure.

So, the major understandings that I take from this very very interesting and informative documentary is that a) if we are not in an alliance with France we are fighting against them and once we finish fighting them we a ruling them until we are allies again b) the situation in the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern regions is the same today as it was in King Richards crusader years and c) the whole of this era and to the present day are eerily similar, War then Peace and War again. I don’t think we will ever see true peace in the world.
