To put this in perspective - Dressel just dumped a half second off of the 50 yard free record. HALF A SECOND. That's insane in this event. Unheard of. This is bigger than what Bolt lopped off the 100m. He Just buried this record under a layer of concrete
Michelangelo more like .6 but yeah
When are you guys going to join ths rest of the world and use metres
😁😁
@@AdamHallacher
A standard Olympic pool is 50 metres not 50 yards
You guys do know that a metre is longer than a yard right ?
@@barefootbeachrunner9498 lol sorry i meant metres

I saw that lmao the look at the clock
Wow, random but you have my old facebook profile picture from years ago lmao
When I started swimming in college, the record was still 19.05 by Tom Jager. At the end of the season, Fred Bousquet went like 18.7 and everyone was dumbfounded. Breaking 18 was mythical. Going sub-18 by nearly half a second is insane. Just unreal.
I got to meet dressel at a swim clinic.
Dressel went 18.6 when he was 15 years old.
This is unimpressive. The solution to how to swim faster is found at my youtube channel "about" in linkedin: take a close read. Good day.
I went 21.98 and won my league in high school…
@@RR-vu3ol nope he was 18.67 at 18 and that’s when he was a freshman in college. That’s also the current 17-18 NAG today. He dropped 1 second in 50Free in 3 years of college when most collegiate swimmers don’t even drop half a second. The year before he didn’t even go under 18. He was just incredible this meet.
Legend has it Joseph Schooling went 17.62 in practice the day after
I love this.
XDDDD
I did too. Legend has it
Where schooling now? Dude only won 1 gold medal😂😂
@@Saiputera one medal beating Phelps. How many did you win?
Jesus Christ at 0:19 his turn is so fast the water shoots at the flags behind the officials and moves them backwards
yeah, that's nuts!
I still remember when I was in high school hearing about David Fox going 19.14. My high school best was 22.54. I was fast enough to win three straight conference championships but never once finished in the top 6 at state. I was 5’11” and 155 pounds. I didn’t swim after high school. Seeing the size of the swimmers and the times they were swimming was somewhere between humbling, humiliating and frightening. A 17.63 is wack! Dressel is the perfect sprinter. It’s controlled fury with perfect technique. He’s the spasmanian devil with perfect form. If watching that doesn’t make your hairs stand up you might be a zombie. 17 freaking 63?!? When will humans reach the limit?
david fox from nc?
moi meme Yes
I think the limit is 16.00
the only events i swim are 50 yard and meter free and 200 / 400 free relays, so im a sprinter, and this is next level. I dont understand how this is humanly possible while im chugging along at a 25 in meters
@Owen Atkins well yes, but actually no
This will never get old. It's up there with Jason Lezak going 46.06 in the 100 meter free on the relay and making up .7 of a second on the Olympic Gold medalist in 2008.
This may be pretty close to the human capacity.
AI experiments and testing shows human capacity is around a 16.64 seconds for 50 metre Freestyle.
I’m going faster than this
Seth Reno gonna be hard when you DQ in the 50 at state
@@jimmyjom1664 got many more brotha and I was robbed not DQed 😂
@@sethreno5566 actually I looked up your time and you were over two seconds slower than this. But wow 19.95 is crazy!!
For those that don't understand this I'll try to make an analogy.
A guy comes into the NFL combine and the buzz around him is that he might break the 40 yard dash record, which is a 4.22 and he might even go a 4.19, which would be incredible
Then he comes in and goes a 4.09
lol your analogy is way more obscure than the actual thing.

He BLEw AwAY ThE FASTEST IN HISTORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He's been there how many times...
Yep. 0.84 seconds faster than #2 all-time - Cielo. However, Cielo swam that time in a super-suit back in the day. So, technically speaking, the 2nd fastest all-time is Ryan Held - 18.56. That means Dressel is nearly a full second faster than the 2nd fastest man ever at this distance. INSANE.
I’m reading that in the Rowdy Gaines voice from the Beijing relay Jason Lezak anchored and went 46.06
Michelangelo best relay ever
That's exactly what it's from, the most epic relay in US swimming history
bruh, dressel was back faster than 3 of the guys went out... let that sink in. Dude is faster on a flip-turn than blake P from a start.
It’s absolutely mind boggling. My best ever to a touch was 8.9 allegedly but my coach has fast thumbs. Probably closer to 9.0 or 9.1. I can’t imagine someone pushing off and going that same speed.
I LOVE the roar of the crowd after they look at the time on the board! Beautiful!
Moral of the story:
Wall pushoffs determine the event
not even he was miles ahead of them at the start, it was his start and underwaters
Disagree. Being a genetic freak and having posidon-like fast-twich speed determines the event.
he won by over a second. A WHOLE SECOND. these swimmers are the best of the best for college athletes and he completely blew the competition out of the water. winning by a second is huge in the NCAA's, let alone in the 50 free.

Caaleb I will be rooting for you in Tokyo.
It's hard to comprehend that ALL of the other REALLY fast finalists are essentially swimming the same speed, and Dressel is a body length ahead of them?!!
I was the volunteer timer in his lane for that race. I got 17.62 on my watch and screamed like crazy when he went that freaky fast time!
Confession to make: somehow his towel that he used to wipe his block ended up in my belongings... weird
Jeff Nunn I believe you
this will never get old.
I swam a 21.98 and won the league champs final in high school. He beat me by over 4 seconds. That speed is unfathomable.
8:48s in a 25?!
I can't do that with fins on ....yet
The dropshot king It’s a dive so don’t worry
Based on his speed if he was in a 25meters pool he could be the 1st person in 19sec
50yards=45.72m divided by 17.63sec gives 2.593 meters/sec
In 1sec more he would have covered 48.3meters so 1.7meters extra needs 0.75sec
My estimation is that he could do that in ~19.5 while WR is 20.26
Κλεομένης Σαρρης You forgot to factor in breathing, and the fact that your speed decreases in relation to a distance increase, so not really. Also, his flip turn and impeccable off-the-wall underwater would be off slightly. Either way, César Cielo still wins
But remember he is a human not a machine that can keep the exact same time all the way up and all the time
Thanos yeah, that’s what I was trying to say, guess I didn’t word it very well haha. Like you said, he’ll get more tired after longer distances.
This would be correct, however official world records are only valid in long course pools (so no flip turn) which slows a swimmer down quite a lot
Can we all consider that he hasn't got the world record showing us that he hasn't done that yet and that was a year ago
Bruh I've never seen a 8 lane 25 yard pool struggle like that
insane breakout
Dressel is just shredding the water, like a motor boat! My best 50 is 25 seconds. Not too shabby for a 54 year old just learning how to swim correctly 😀
My best was 27-28 in 50m swimming pool
My best is 32
That makes this seem easy
Sean brought me here.
I saw him dive, then looked up to see the time real quick. When I looked back at the video he already was halfway back from the other side...
imagine going 18 seconds in a 50 free and still losing
That's not 50m, it's 45meter(50 yards)
bruh his first 25 is faster than my 25 time by 2 seconds
David X I don’t believe that at all
@@alvaroarroyo4734 Why not? It would make sense.

Greatest short distance swimmer of all time and gaining ground on phelps and a couple others overall
Not even close to phelps. No doubt dressel may have more speed. But Phelps was dominant and versatile, he could pretty much beat anyone in any event except for 50/100 free that’s about it. Dressel is fantastic but in Breaststroke/ Backstroke, and 200 Fly he can’t even compete LCM.
The man has a 41 inch vertical jump! Most NBA players don't even have that kind of jump. That's how he is able to have such powerful starts off the block and flip turns.
i have a 42 inch and that's terrible 💀
why’s the commentary sound like it was recorded in game chat

The fact that 2nd place went a full second slower than him is unbelievable

Dressel’s going to crush the long course record by Cialo in 2021!
He already has the short course meters record at 20.16!! it’s the argument of does the flip turn make you faster or slower? I think in the long course- he’ll clock around 20. 5 range. Shattering the record 20.91

Only recently did someone else just break 18 now the margin between 1st and 2nd all time is .30
Why this not consider as the new world record?
adrian sia it’s short course. Long course would be the full length in one stretch without turning around becuase turning around and going back is faster
he makes the pool look short - like it's 15 metres.

I would love it if ESPN where specific and said this was 50 yards!
