Cover versions aren't always a pleasure, but this one is absolutely stunning! Wish that Jill Barber would lend her amazing voice to this kind of music a bit more often...
My now husband and I saw Buffy in 1969 as students, long before marriage. Few in the audience; we got to stay for the 2nd performance, too, and were about the only ones in the audience. We loved her voice, piano playing, guitar playing, stage presence, her songwriting and her musically delivered message. We have always sung together, met as performers in musical groups. This is BUFFY'S song. Nobody sings it like she does, nor should they try to imitate artists' uniqueness.
17 references the card game but for myself it has double meaning. I turned 17 years of age in 1971 and worked construction in McKenzie BC. The song is so reflecting of those times. Nice job in this production.
Beautiful! This Songwriter also wrote One of Canada's MOST PASSIONATE Tunes with SYLVIA, his Wife: "FOUR STRONG WINDS" Apparently, it's One of Neil Young's FAVOURITES! Seriously! CHECK This Out!!! ABSOLUTELY! ❤ 😅
quite the splendid cover however they neglected to do the little know 4th verse ( see tony rice and/or david bromberg's cover on you tube) ... 'she's a lady so fine i best never try to find her cause good memories are all that we shared, and they should never be changed cause they're all i can take with me since i gambled and lost my summer wages' and it's that verse that completes the song so well..
IT STARTS AT 2:14 MINUTE THANKS BEAUTIFUL SONGS NEEDS MORE VIOLINS AND FRENCH HORN WILL SOIND SO MUCH BETTER SOME MORE GUITAR LEAD AND SIME GUITAR DUSTIRSION GOD BLESS YOU ALL THERE
Nice version, I've been listening to various versions but David Bromberg is the one who really nailed it. The spoken introduction here really does no justice to the song which is way more tragic.
interesting introduction... about working in the bush, cutting trees, etc. I wonder what part of the lyrics he doesn't understand? ---- "I'm going to work on them towboats With my slippery city shoes Lord I swore I would never do that again Through the great fog bound straights" --- Towboats, things that float up and down waterways
too much yakking before performing. Go to 2:15 to avoid what you don't care about. Good harmony performance after that, though. Out of curiosity, I'd love to hear Matthew sing some verses, solo, with Jill joining in for the chorus parts.
The yakking explains what the song's about for people who aren't familiar with the song or the subject matter. Could have done without all the personal details, but I was OK with it. Lots of time on my hands, I guess.
Ian Tyson did not write this song, he stole it from a BC Logger named Larry Click. Larry had the opportunity to play it for Tyson without first copyrighting it and Tyson stole it as his own. How do I know this? I am an old BC Logger who has worked with Larry Click
He actually bought the song from the writer. This version is not like the original. Listen to the original you will hear although good just another group screwing up some ones song!!!!
Wonderful cover. Just can't stop watching it. Wish I'd been there for the show. And Jill--what a cutie!
Great song. Canadians are lucky to have heard and known. RIP Ian. Passed at age 89. Dec. 31, 2022
Outstanding. The smooth swing is perfect for this song. I'm sure Ian would approve.
Wonderful arrangement of a beautiful song. I’m sure Ian loved it.
True magic some of these covers from this album
Wow!!! I was skeptical at first, but a great cover of a great song by a Canadian Icon.
Effin' brilliant, great song, EXCELLENT cover. Canadian X2!!!
Amazing... just stumbled on these two while searching UA-cam... love their sound 💞
Ian & Sylvia’s self-titled country album from 1971 brought me here. That’s a great album!
You really brought back why I've always loved this song so much.
Woooow beautiful coverrrr 😍😍😍😍😍♥️🎸👌🔥🔥
Cover versions aren't always a pleasure, but this one is absolutely stunning! Wish that Jill Barber would lend her amazing voice to this kind of music a bit more often...
Colter Wall. I will say no more.
I prefer the Nanci Griffith version.
What a beautiful song!!

That’s beautiful. My all time favourite song and you did it justice. Thanks so much.
love the tyson music, great job you two, real nice groove on that song
Best cover of this to date. Your harmony is husky and to a perfection. Thank you.
I love this album, but I might love these live performances even more. Put these on some vinyl and I might buy the album a second time!
THIS IS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!! SPINE CHILLING!!!!!!!
This is a great version of this song!
Great song, and great CD... make another one please.
Well Done You All, Love This Song

FYI, song starts after 2:12. Nice version.

Wonderful cover. Doing Ian Tyson proud.
Nice performance and a really good quality video - thank you!

I agree!
That's how Vancouver was born. That and the navies who blasted a highway to the city.

I wonder what part of the lyrics he doesn't understand?
----
"I'm going to work on them towboats
With my slippery city shoes
Lord I swore I would never do that again
Through the great fog bound straights"
---
Towboats, things that float up and down waterways
I think the lyrics refer to towboats that ferry logs to the sawmills.
Summer wages, it is you that do not understand . . . . . . . .
"Things that float up and down waterways," are you kidding, where are you from ?
.
People arguing about lyrics on the internet lol 😂
Covers don't get any better.
I personally like this one more ua-cam.com/video/hh-jwdWmgxg/v-deo.html
Yes they do. Colter Wall's version of this song is in my mind waaaay better. This is too happy sounding.

You won the gamble only you .

Ian never wrote this song he only sang it
not true

who wrote it Dave ?
What a horrible version of a great song.
You got that right
If I agreed with both of you, we'd all be dead wrong.
what a needlessly rude comment
sounds like Wilco but more righteous
