- If you've always wanted to learn how to make authentic flour tortillas but were intimidated, thinking they're too difficult, this video breaks it down into easy to follow, step-by-step instructions. This recipe yields about a dozen soft, thick, delicious tortillas, unlike anything you could buy at a store. (I like to call them New Mexico style because this is how most of us grew up eating them in my home state.) Here's what you'll need:
Authentic Flour Tortillas Recipe
4 cups all purpose flour
4 tsp. baking powder
1 1/2 tsp. salt
4 Tbsp. fat (lard or Crisco)
1 cup lukewarm water
(You'll also need a rolling pin & griddle!)
Sift flour, salt and baking powder together in large bowl. Add fat and break it up with fingers, making sure it is divided evenly through dough. Then add water a little at a time and knead as you go. You may need to add more than a cup of water, or it may take less to get the desired consistency. Once dough is well kneaded (should take about 5 minutes), form into a big ball, and let it rest for 15-20 minutes covered with a kitchen towel. After the dough has rested, set griddle to medium heat. Take dough and form it into smaller balls. Lightly dust flat surface with flour and place individual ball, and roll out with rolling pin to make large circle about 1/8" thick. (You roll up and down, then rotate the tortilla and repeat the process a few times. Do not flip tortilla over when you're rolling. Only roll on one side, but keep rotating as you go. Don't worry if your tortillas don't come out perfectly round. As with everything, it takes practice.) Cook on griddle, flipping over when small bubbles appear, or when tortilla starts to get light brown spots. Cook on both sides. It doesn't take long, so keep an eye on it. Place cooked tortilla on plate or dish and cover with dish towel to keep warm. Then repeat the process with the rest of your dough until all your tortillas have been made.
Tortillas are always the best when they are freshly made, so reward yourself by putting a little butter on one of them and eat it hot off the griddle!

Great video! I make tortillas every other day. I remember coming home from school and as my brother and I passed the neighbors houses we could smell what Mom's were cooking for dinner. Oh the smell of fresh tortillas, beans, enchiladas or tamales.... There is no place like home in the Great State of New Mexico.
YES!!! What a sweet memory. I loved reading that. Thanks so much for the comment.
I was searching for an authentic New Mexico tortilla recipe just like the one my Nana used to make. I am so overjoyed to discover your method is identical to hers. As a little girl I used to help her make them, had my own little rolling pin and towel. Thank you for taking me back to fond memories of her wonderful cooking. Can't wait to make these.
Your comment made me so happy. I know these thicker tortillas are very specific to New Mexico. And it even varies within the state. My mom always told the story of when she first married my dad and made tortillas, her new father-in-law (my grandpa) said, "estos no son tortillas!" Then he grabbed two so that they would be thick enough! Lol He was from Socorro, NM. Anyway, hope these turn out the way you remember them.
@@marcyinspired1442 Wow! My grandmother was from Socorro (Lemitar) too.
Name is Esther, I was born in Santa Fe . My Mama made tortillas every single day. My Grandpa Ellie and Grandma Josie Montoya owned Josie's Best Tortillas. I am happy I found you!!
Hi Esther. I'm so happy you found my channel, too. Sounds like you come from a family of great cooks. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
Loved your video and your style! You need to be on Food Network! I know you’ll take UA-cam by storm! God bless you!
Thank you so much for the encouragement. 🥰
This video made me so happy! I had been trying to make tortillas like my grandma used to make them going off memory because I didn't think I'd find a New Mexico recipe. I eventually looked it up and this was the first video I got so you can't imagine how happy you made me when you said it was that version! Looking forward to making them for my girlfriend as I tell her about Pecos :)
You make all your recipes so easy and whatever I do make turns out good! Your a great teacher of authentic Mexican food! Thank you!
Hi Marcy i recently started watch your videos; I’m was born in New Mexico, you make all those good foods like my Mom. I’m so inspired by your videos. Thank you
Your tortillas turned out perfect. The consistency was so amazing and pliable as you rolled them out. You made this look so easy. Loved this. Thank you!!❤
Thanks. I had a lot of practice growing up, but I was nervous when we were shooting this video because I hadn't made them in a while. Good thing it all came back to me! Lol I appreciate your nice feedback.
Love this! Just like my great grandma from Las Vegas New Mexico used to make for us when visiting us in San Diego
Omg finally I found my moms recipe 😍 you are a Saint. This is what I was looking for. Keep posting and go Instagram and til tok u r fabulous 🥰🥰🥰🥰
You are too kind, Victoria. Your comment made my day! 🥰 So happy you found what you were looking for. Thank you for taking the time to tell me. ❤️
I haven’t seen nice tortillas like that since my grandmother passed. Now I’m going to try to make them. I hate the flat store bought ones
Love all your videos. Your tortillas look delicious, especially with butter!
Thank you so much, Sally. The way I see it, you’ve gotta reward yourself after making tortillas. 😜
Thank You! What a wonderful and tasty easy recipe - we enjoyed it.
Slowly but surely I'm getting caught up on all your videos. Mom didn't have a "recipe" either but my older brother took it upon himself to put a measure on all the ingredients. It took several tries for him because, before he could capture and measure, she'd already thrown it into the mix. So funny, he then passed his results around his fraternity brothers and friends in college in the mid-sixties. Mom did say she had better results when we all made it into school before she made tortillas for the day. There were four of us kids, the eldest were two years apart, six years later I came along as the real test for my parents and the youngest was six years later. LOL Thank you for sharing!
Grew up on thicker, fluffier tortillas made by my grandmothers, mom and aunts in Colorado! Thank you for the recipe and instructional video. I'm ready to try to make them again and maybe someday they'll be beautifully golden and round as yours are!
You're so welcome. I'm happy to hear you're going to give them a try again. Let me know how they turn out for you.
Great job Marcie, I do make it exactly like you do. Yummy, I like it with butter too.
Thanks for sharing ur tortillas.
Hello your tortillas reminded me of my tias tortillas she made them the same way ! 👍😋😋😋😋 so many memories thanks for sharing your recipe blessings 🤗👍
Omg... those were beautifully perfect torts! You have inspired me to try making them again. Thanks Marcy!
It’s like riding a bike. It had been years since I made them myself. I was so relieved when it all came back to me. Lol
It’s not sexist. My mom made every morning too. Love them....
Right? I felt I needed to say it before people would criticize. Glad I'm not the only one proud of the fact I was raised by a mom who made tortillas every day. Thanks so much for your comment.
How funny you say that my dad use to say he use to make them then he started to a lid to make them round lol❤😊
I love your channel, that's 100% new Mexico way
Thank you! I've been searching for how to make a thicker flour tortilla. Only one aunt knows how to make them and now that she no longer talks to me, I can do it myself.
I'm happy to help. Hope you and your aunt can resolve things.
@@marcyinspired1442 You know how Latino families are.
I meant to ask you, I have a tortilla press, will that also work for flour tortillas?
@@F_Cad That's a good question. I have a tortilla press, too, but only use it for corn tortillas. I've never seen anyone use a tortilla press for flour tortillas. But, it can't hurt to try.
@@marcyinspired1442 I'll tell you how it turns out.
Tortilla press didn't work because it's so doughy unlike masa, they couldn't get thin enough no matter how hard I pressed. It's great if you want to make papusas though. I can't ever seem to make them round no matter how I rolled them out. All my tortillas are shaped like a bug that splattered on a windshield, but so tasty.
I make them to but im going to make them like yours thankyou ❤
They look delicious. Thank you for sharing
Yummmm they look really really delicious 😋
What is the best way to store these? Also can’t wait to make them! They look delicious!
Wow you make these look so easy & I can practically smell them through my laptop screen! Yes on the butter!
Ha! Butter is the reward for hard work! Although, it IS easy with a little practice.
I don't care if it sounds sexist...lol...nothing better than home made tortillas.
The whole time you were making those tortillas all I could taste was your mom's tortillas❤ great job, I thought you were going to do the squeeze spring test, hahaha
You mean, squish one in my hand and let it unfold itself? I forgot about that. I think I was just too hungry. (I had a crockpot on the counter with freshly made beans.)
Marcy do you have a corn tortillas ? I love this video
Yes, I do. Here's a link: ua-cam.com/video/cLOoy8jq-f8/v-deo.htmlsi=YtKhD0hqO5N3aumO
I learned early also, it’s cultural and as a Navajo I had to spend summers inside perfecting the dough. 😂
Do you ever use masa trigo instead of the flour?
I use to love when my mom made them. Hot off the comal with butter & especially peanut butter.
Yes!!! With peanut butter for an after school snack! Can't beat it.
❤❤❤❤❤
Good for you to settle down the crybabies calling things sexist. I learned best from a man to make tortillas. Yes NM food. OUR cultural food!!!
My dad use to say that what your mom said then he started using a lid lol
Why didn't you tie your hair back? My grandma would have smacked me if my hair was down.
