    Natural way to work on the hull, not as costly as a crane.

      Definitely not as costly, would highly recommend this spot, no rocks and hard pack sand, Windy Bay and Hazelwood Island

    The captain of Sailing Lucky Fish said that the slime on a hull causes bottom growth to disregard the bottom paint and stick to your hulls. A pressure washer works underwater and can pump salt water to clean your boat. Just purge the pump with fresh water. The pump is usually made with ceramic and doesn't corrode

    • @sailingwiththejamess

      Would love to have a pressure washer! Would have made the job so much easier! She will be water blasted when she gets hauled out in the Slings for the antifouling early next year.
      Thank you for watching! Really good to hear people are enjoying the videos ❤️❤️

    👍🏼 you guys would need to
    Pack those prop hubs with the correct grade marine grease.. ...
    If you had a grease gun that could lock on or be screwed in under water that might work... but looking at other folks in tropical shoreline waters 3 months between scrape downs and prop checks seems to be about right. ...so get used to drying out ...
    Look up Mangrove Jack.. his home built wooden cat is a regular as his name implies.
    Charlie 😂 youve just learnt that some places are very tidal. ... the good news is they are great for building sand and mud pies making channels and digging ponds.
    And chasing huge numbers of small crab's.

    • @sailingwiththejamess
      @sailingwiththejamess  11 місяців тому +2

      Hey Clive,
      The grease points take a very fine pointed grease nipple adapter so it may be able to be applied under water. We don't want to have to dry out every 3 months so we are swapping to a softer antifowl and going to try a different brand of props. I feel that the kiwi props don't quite give us enough push and it would seem that we have reached our limit of getting weight off and making this girl lighter. Will do a video on weather it was the right decision or not and let everyone know. I personally hope that it does lol. Charlie is growing up so fast and I am super grateful to be able to spend so much time with her.

    Hi guys, your video brought a smile to my face....especially Charlie. I have been sailing my catamaran around the UK south coast for 20 years. I have been beaching at least twice a year to scrub off and change anodes for all these years. Its getting hard work now I^m in my late 60s but I get help now. My cat is a 12 m Dazcat called Cloud 9. A quick google will give you an idea of what she^s like. I have similar but bigger and deeper fixed keels hence we take to the ground very well without tipping forward too much.
    I have 30 hp volvo 2030 engines with saildrives. 20 years old now but still going strong. I have volvo 3 blade folding props which have been excellent. Full power in forward and reverse. I have changed the hubs on the props a couple of years ago as i had a bit of corrosion on the splines but i think that was my own fault as i was a bit mean with the grease. Originally i wanted to use Gori folders but after 4 props that vibrated i gave up and went for volvos. Dont go for Gori props....real vibration problems.
    I also noticed that you scraped your hull clean with scrapers. I scrape but also use a heavy duty scotch brite pad to remove the top surface of the antifoul which removes the depleted biocide layer so you have a fresh biocide rich layer. I use a commercial Jotun Seaforce 90 antifoul which is good for 5 years ....its meant for shipping in continual use up to 20 knots. I have scrubbed the antifoul through to the primer in places but i just use a can of quick drying Jotun Aquiline to touch up...seems to work.
    Cheers
    Chris

      @sailingwiththejamess  11 місяців тому +2

      Hey Chris,
      Cheers for the advice! I am sort of glad to here the feed back about gori props as we have also found them to be the most expensive 😀. I have herd good things about the Volvo props and I love the shape of them. 5 yrs out of antifowl is amazing! We have just purchased the international antifowl but will definitely look into the jotun option for the slipping after next.
      -sam

    • @chrisjones9089
      @chrisjones9089 11 місяців тому +2

      Sam, I forgot one more interesting antifouling snippet. For the last couple of years I have been using a product called Lanoguard which is basically sheep Lanolin with a bit of antifoul mixed in. It's a heavy grease that smells like sheep s##t! I use it as antifoul on my props. I have never ever been able to get any antifoul to stick on props...tried all sorts. I simply get a great gob of Lanoguard and spread it liberally all over the props. It seems to work quite well but the big advantage is you can get a big gob of this stuff and wipe it on the props even when they are submerged. The other bonus seems to be that it provides a very effective anti corrosion layer. My prop anodes this year were virtually completely intact...they usually disintegrate to white dust.

    • @sailingwiththejamess
      @sailingwiththejamess  11 місяців тому +1

      Wow I have just purchased prop one for the new props but I will definitely add lanoguard to the list it would be great to be able to apply under water. How long do you get out of each application? I absolutely love non standard options.
      -sam

    • @chrisjones9089
      @chrisjones9089 11 місяців тому +2

      Sam ,
      I began using Lanogoard on my props a few years ago. Originally I applied it all over the existing antifoul on both the props and the saildrives. For several years I topped it up quite frequently as I was on a swinging mooring in Chichester Harbour that dries out every tide hence no problems with access. The lanoguard goes a very long way so one tub is good for a while. A couple of years ago I moved my boat to a pontoon mooring that doesn't dry out on a river estuary on the Isle of wight hence I can't get to the bottom of my boat unless I find somewhere to beach it. I went back to Chichester harbour a couple of months ago which was the first time for a whole year. The props had quite a bit of fouling after a whole year but I could still make 6 knots flat out under engine vs 9+ knots flat out when hull and props are absolutely clean. Not bad after 1 year. I have also tried Duralac as a prop antifoul...chromate paste...worked OK but it fell off the blades. The main problem with most prop antifouls is they need time to cure which is difficult between tides. I try to limit lifting my boat out to once every 5 years and prop antifoul doesn't last that long. I now use Lanoguard products on loads of things...they do a spray which is great for outboards. ...it stops corrosion. I also use Duralac around metal to metal contacts to passify the contact area such as rivets in a mast. Trouble with boats everything above the water wants to corrode and anything below the water wants to foul and corrode!

    • @sailingwiththejamess
      @sailingwiththejamess  10 місяців тому +1

      Hahaha I hear you on that one. Aluminium is such a soft metal. Thank you for the wonderful information. I believe that I will use lanoguard on the moving parts of the prop and prop one on the blades and see how that goes.

    Would love to chat with you about that plastic you have on your chain ! In stead or using plastic you can use the metal that chopping blocks are made of . It would ware out far less then plastic that the sun will deteriorate. Now another suggestion for bottom paint. Stop using Anti foul ! Look into Ringo liner . It will help with flotation as well as harden you bottom. Never worry about beaching . Cleaning would be a rag across the bottom and done. Maybe redo in 5 to 8 years .

      Yes, we are not the biggest fans of sail drives. Shaft drives were on the "strongly want" list when we were looking at boats. This girl's design was for sail drives and the first owners did not want them so when they had her built they had the engines moved to under the aft beds, a skeg designed and shaft drives. The original area for the engines are now amazing storage lockers and tool workshop. The previous owners were awesome and gave us a bunch of photos are her build from skeleton to launch 🤗

    Here is a Tip use in your Antifouling the hottest Chili Powder you can find, ad that to the paint about 1 Part in 6 or 7 Parts of Paint, the Result will surprise you.

      Thank you for the tip! Adding Chili powder has been recommended by a handful of people now, we will do some investigation on it as everyone who has recommended it has said amazing things! 👏🌶

    Gori props. Folding, Over Drive, Better Speed in flat water and save fuel. Only negative is they are not that strong in reverse but once you know that, not a prob. Peter A - Smokyjim

    Loving the videos! Any updates on how you‘re gonna tackle boat weightloss? As a non-boat owner that watches way to much sailing-tube i was wondering if fuel weight thats below the waterline counts towards the boat weight? Greetings from the Netherlands

    • @sailingwiththejamess
      @sailingwiththejamess  11 місяців тому +5

      Greetings! Fuel weight does count. Specific gravity of salt water is 1.025 and the average diesel Specific gravity is 0.86 so if we go in volume then we still gain some buoyancy when our tanks are pressed.

      Yes, Gori props look marvellous, but unfortunately, they are a little out of our budget. We went for flexofold as we felt that they were slightly better value for money.

    We used to beach our trymaran at Seabrook Island at our gramps and scrubbed the underside. And do small maintenance and away we went. Not sure why yours are so overgrown this bad after 6 weeks. That's allot we used
    Spartan Multi-Season Antifouling Paint & Sharkskin Hard BP.

    Hi just watched your video and see you have vivid petit antifoul. We also have an aluminium cat and are about to use the same antifoul, our question is how long have you have this antifoul on for , we were hoping for around 12/ 18 months

    • @sailingwiththejamess
      @sailingwiththejamess  11 місяців тому +2

      It has I high amount of biocides in it which we found works well for about 14 months but then the antifowl is not very soft and we had trouble reaching the speeds required for the antifowl to start to self polish. That is why we are trying internationals version (which is softer) we will let you know which one we find is best.

      @sailingwiththejamess  10 місяців тому +3

      You are exactly right, We hadn't been there in a long time and didn't know how flat it was, but we put the anchor out just in case. Our plan was to move/set the anchor by hand to check position for best escape route but were lucky we didn't need it.

      I looked into it and it would seem that if you pay an environmental levy then it is OK. I fail to see how paying money to the federal government makes a difference to the environment but whatever works I guess.
