Re the iron oxide/rust spots, there is surprisingly an easy fix. I ground a shackle off my anchor on the foredeck with a grinder peppering the boat with small iron particles. I got distracted and went back a week later and to my dismay, there were rust spots everywhere on the deck. My neighbour in the harbour suggested car brake dust remover. Got Sonax Iron Remover and that contains the magic ingredient, Sodium Thioglycolic acid. It works like an absolute charm. Converts the iron oxide into some bright purple compound that is water soluble that you can hose off

Those welding sparks are not an accident. Any welder knows you cant just weld next to anything, much less a FIBERGLASS BOAT and the sparks and smoke not damage it. The sparks are essentially cooked into the gel coat. Who ever was in charge of the welder needs fired. Its not an accident, its pure laziness. They make welding blankets for a damn reason.
Top comment! But how could it have gotten EVERYWHERE -both above and underneath the boat is my question? Plus there is the REAL risk of fire if they are welding THAT close to the boat the sparks can land everywhere....🧐🤔
The cradles that the yachts sit in are welded onto the deck to stop them moving around during shipping and then removed with a grinder... you might think they would put up some protection, but these ships are under a lot of pressure to get moving again...
Not only welding sparks but also the cutting wheels used to cut the welds off after while they remove the supports that were welded to the ships deck can cause more damage. Check all windows for pitting as the are also going to get pitting from sparks.

My guess is not welding spots. Smoke from ship diesels has sulfur in it which settles on boat. Salt spray or rain turns sulfur into sulfur dioxide which is an acid & will eat metal, f glass, etc. Check that f glass gel coat is not actually etched/pitted

Thank you for sharing this experience. Crossing an ocean is a huge challenge and things can happen. Knowing that this is an option for someone is very valuable alternative. Even when things happen the alternative to leaving a boat somewhere or shipping in certain circumstances is huge! Thank you!
I've shipped a (Larger) yacht before and went with it as a "Rider". Throughout the 2 months onboard the ship's crew were treating rust on deck; grinding & painting everyday. Also, depending on the wind direction, the ships exhaust caused black stains on deck. I kept on top of it with daily cleaning otherwise it would have been exactly the same as yours. The only solution would have been to "Wrap it" in plastic (At a cost of several thousand) and even that comes with complications. There's no easy answer to this...
In my conversation with 7 star, they strongly suggest not wrapping stating that in most cases, the wrap does not survive the journey and causes damage to the tires and other boats as it disembarks on its own accord.
Yes there is an easy answer: C/O should ensure cargo is looked after on any ship, and organised the crew appropriately Any grinding of steel should be done in ballast not next to valuable cargo especially in the wind. Each of those particles will rust and damage any surface. This is pure carelessness by people who always have someone else to clean up after them.
Awesome talk guys! Glad you had a positive experience with shipping - even with the damage happy to hear that working the company is going smoothly. Looking forward to seeing you guys have fun in the med! Cheers legends!

Loved everything about this! Honest descriptions of the process and options, results and implications etc. Dealing with bureaucracy, whether shipping agents or insurance or whoever is vaguely terrifying for me! That needs work on my part. The "things we forgot" section must be one of the most important bits of sailing info ever put on UA-cam Plus the last 10 seconds are probably some of my favourite all-time Ruby Rose comments.
Glad things went relatively well. Thank you for the explanation. I had wondered about what the damage would be like and your reasons for shipping. It's your boat and your life to do what you want and you just take us along for the ride. Enjoy Greece.
So sorry about all the little rust spots. I know just how difficult that kind of rust stain is to remove and then the polish and waxing of the gelcoat on such a new vessel. You two are maintaining such a great attitude about the situation. Hats off to you.

18 months?!?! I’d ship too and just get on with life. This was a great episode. I’m happy to see that you’re safe and back in Europe. The shipping story was so interesting. You two deserve to get a break! Geez. Hopefully your time with family on the Mediterranean will be blissful.
I was able to follow the entire journey from when you went out to the ship and was parked next to it for several hours, down around the cape, the stop in Gibraltar and finally the disembarking in Turkey. A lot of things I witnessed along the journey now make sense with you sharing your experience. Thanks you for taking the time to do this.
Sailing for 18 months, 3 ocean crossings, unforeseen expenses, damage and repairs vs shipping over a few weeks, unforeseen damage and repairs. I'd choose shipping too. At least you didn't risk losing a rudder or two to those hooligan orcas in the Eastern Atlantic. Besides, getting to Greece to sail with your family sooner rather than later is as important a reason enough to ship a boat.
I found the process of deciding to ship RR2 and what you went thru upon receiving her in Turkey fascinating. Just reinforces my motto: no matter what it is, nothing is EVER simple. Glad you and RR2 are in the Med relatively safe and sound and wait to see you in Greece. One of my FAVORITE countries!
Excellent video. I really enjoyed hearing your well thought through, calm, and rational perspective on the damage and the company’s response. Enjoy your time in the Med and in particular Greece. 😊❤
Great episode guys. We cannot believe that people would berate you for not sailing to Europe. They must have nothing better to do with their time. We look forward to following your Mediterranean adventures. Cheers
Absolutely angel grinding sparks. And they could have been doing this anywhere on the ship that was up wind from your boat. I put my boat in a marina for a day and a night and came back to find it had blue paint spots everywhere and someone had sprayed a boat 100 meters away and up wind. So yes we know exactly how you feel. Regards from Oz
To be fair i like your decision to ship the boat and start making videos from your desired destination. I'm sure we will feel the good vibes in the coming videos. Cheers and have fun sailing Greece!

Guys, I absolutely love your attitude! It is YOUR choice to sail or not sail to be honest! Your response to the rust specks is commendable. ‘Things’ happen and as long as one puts one’s hand up and say my fault, then what more can be done. No matter how much jumping up and down and remonstrating you feel like exuding, it ain’t going to make matters better. I am confident the matter will be resolved. Blimey, I would have been mad though! 😂 Thanks for sharing!
Your relationship with your wife is just the same as mine is with my wife! I burst out laughing when she shut you down, no comments about “y” certain nations. As to shipping your yacht, not my cup of tea but also not my yacht. I still love your channel and watching your personality work together. And cudos to you for your volunteering work most commendable!
Stuff what anyone else thinks! It's your home and your choice! I will echo what many are saying - THANK YOU for letting us in to your adventures, warts and all!
Great episode. Very interesting. Loved the fact you will get resolved with the shipping company. You answered some questions that may pop up when shipping. I hope you have a somewhat stress free end and this will soon be something in the past. Cheers from the West Coast of Canada.
This was a great video! I recently used 7-Star as well to ship SV Areté from France to the US. For some reason, I did not receive any negative feedback for that decision. I didn't have any damage from shipping. I really really appreciated your highlighting the costs of sailing across oceans. The planning, extra equipment, wear and tear, fuel and excess provisioning are significant costs. Your catamaran reviews and the more family centered videos from Sailing Zatara gave us the confidence to buy a Catamaran and begin our adventure. Thank You!
Thanks for the update. I am looking forward to seeing your next sailing adventure. Very informative and honest about the journey. Also, enjoy watching your videos.
No need to apologize, you made the best decision, is your boat your life and your youtube channel, we are just tagging along with you. Can wait for the EU adventures coming. Greetings
This was super informative. I have been involved with shipping of a variety or products over many years (never shipped a boat before though) and the one thing that I can say on the subject is, if you insure (actually you MUST insure) the goods in transit and properly declare everything then the insurance usually pays out marine insurance is not like household or car insurance there are literally 100's of years of laws that have been refined over time that maritime insurance follows.
Absolute Correct Decision To Ship. 18 month minimum to get there... Yep, I'd have done it too. Now you're where you want to be... Kudos! Glad RR2 is all ok...lol😊
Really interesting to learn what was involved in the shipping process of RR2! Thanks for sharing and I'm looking forward to your videos of sailing in the Med.
Sailing from northern France, thanks to Covid, after a glorious year of sailing we had to ship from Ft Lauderdale to Vancouver. We used Seven Seas Yacht Transport... they were outstanding. Not only in the transport but during the panic of lockdowns and boarder closure, as we were sailing madly from the most eastern ports of the Bahamas to Ft Lauderdale, they arranged moorage and a delivery skipper to care for our boat and load it for us... phew... Yes it cost a lot ... yes we would have preferred to sail her.... but we arrived in the USA 2 days before the boarder closed! Again... phew. Covid massively screwed our sailing plans for a few years indeed but we have our ship here at home with us!
Thanks so much for the update! I am sorry that you experienced damage, but I am pleased that the shipping company has taken responsibility. I honestly hope your experiences in the Mediterranean match your expectations, and I look forward to (virtually) tagging along. I have enjoyed each and every episode. Thanks again 😊
Wow, that is a pretty extensive process Nick. And it is too bad that that un-named Country caused the vast majority of issues here. And the fact you cant name them in fear of be demonetized is nuts. But she is there finally and you guys will be sailing around the Med soon
Sorry people are picking apart your decisions. Thank you for the detailed discussion of the why's - REALLY informative. Glad you all got to the Med OK and I'm really looking forward to living vicariously through your videos!
Thanks for that run-down of counting the costs of shipping vs sailing to your parents' stomping grounds. It really helps us simple-minded folk see what needs to go into making such a decision. Also loved the dancing around the problems along the Suez route.
I love you two and love watching your videos. I hope that everyone else that are watching are learning from your experiences. Also I recommend watching sailing Yaba for your own personal enjoyment. And for hopefully easing your anxiety nick. You’ll like them I swear.😊
CONGRATULATIONS on being in the Mediterranean!! Doesn't matter how you got there!! As long as you got there safe and sound!! Your boat, your life - up to you how you do it!!
Great episode. Thanks for all the great information about shipping. Really it is not anyone’s business why you shipped instead of sailing. I really enjoy all your episodes.
Learned a lot from this video and found it extremely interesting. I always enjoy these types of episodes as well as your technical videos. Keep the content coming.
Think you made the right decision. Not sure why anyone would be bothered either way by your choice, but as you said, it's the internet. Don't think I've ever shipped something considerable overseas, be it a car, household etc without something getting damaged or stolen. Upsetting but some things just are what they are and its simpler just to be prepared for it and deal with it after.
Very informative. What I find really amazing is the fact that a de facto monopoly company takes so much care of their customers. Looking forward to your Greek adventures.
Very good and as usual introduced perfectly ,the shipping company might think of wrapping boats as I presume yours was not the only one with the damage ,it makes more sense to ship than sail
Look forward to seeing your mum and dad on your new beautiful home!! Great video for information. Have an amazing time sailing in the Mediterranean!! You did the right thing shipping your boat.
So glad the transport worked out for you!👍Thanks for the useful info! I've been browsing your channel for a while and finally committed to subscription - if only to see Nick in a sarong ;) LOL! Cheers guys!
Love your videos and honesty. I have been in the international shipping (primarily household goods) for over 40 years and as you said, mistakes happen, but it is all about the resolution. All the best to you.
Awesome description of your latest adventures! I think you are so smart to ship around the trouble spots and to save your lovely boat and your nerves slogging to where you really wanted to be. Respect and congratulations.
This could well be iron particles from welding nearby. If that was the case it would be localised and not seen in areas that were “shaded”by the contours in the moulding. Another possible problem ( which I have seen before on shipping large composite structures on deck) could attack of the gel coat from the exhaust from the engines of the ship. This is acidic and can go for gel coat. It will give a pitted appearance and will hold dirt and look similar to what you have. It may also expose any porosity that may have been present in the gel coat.
That was a really interesting episode. Shipping made sense for your situation - doing a circumnavigation, or even half a one, is a massive undertaking. You an always take off for massive passages again when you have had the current planned adventures and have the boat working exactly as you want it to. Enjoy the Med season.
Probably already resolved but use a specialist to repair that rust. It is likely embedded int the gel coat. A deep wet sand and polishing schedule should remove the grinding particles. These ships are perpetually rusting and work to maintain them done in transit , sadly your finish looks like it copped the fallout. Good times ahead in the med. Ross
in case you are looking to ship again in the future, please note that there are alternatives to the two shipping companies you mentioned in your episode - having shipped a number of boats to/from the Med and Middle East - dirty boats is a common issue, in your case rust stains, often sod stains from the shipping boats exhaust as well (which is very difficult to remove from teak decks for example) - where possible it is work considering shrink-wrapping the boat - not always possible and comes at a cost, but may save hassle on arrival

Plus there is a break from the boat. That is always a good idea
Glad you are back to sailing, love your videos. I have been following you since the beginning.
Very insightful and glad you both are back on your beautiful boat! Happy Sailing in the Med.
To be fair i like your decision to ship the boat and start making videos from your desired destination. I'm sure we will feel the good vibes in the coming videos. Cheers and have fun sailing Greece!
One of my favourite things about you guys is how practical you are.
Love this , first ever video on shipping I have seen.
❤ Excellent informative video, it's your boat, your choice, your life, stuff what others think. That's why we follow these channels, learn stuff, have a laugh, fill in rainy days.
Enjoy, Cheers from New Zealand.
Thank you for video! Can appreciate the pragmatic approach you both took given the circumstances.
Shipping was the right solution for sure!
wow great video, but we kind of expect that from you guys! can't wait for more!
Great episode. Very interesting. Loved the fact you will get resolved with the shipping company. You answered some questions that may pop up when shipping. I hope you have a somewhat stress free end and this will soon be something in the past. Cheers from the West Coast of Canada.
Nice talking heads videos. Glad it’s all seemingly worked out and you’re enjoying Turkey and Greece. Stay safe.
Thank You!
CONGRATULATIONS!! How very exciting! Do you have a SM to follow?
Sorry to hear of the hassles you guys endured hope sailing in the “home waters” goes quite well for you-good luck
Thanks for the update. I am looking forward to seeing your next sailing adventure. Very informative and honest about the journey. Also, enjoy watching your videos.
One of your best vids, thanks for the interesting shipping of your new home and hope all plans now falls into place for you both.
No need to apologize, you made the best decision, is your boat your life and your youtube channel, we are just tagging along with you. Can wait for the EU adventures coming. Greetings
Very useful information. Thanks Nick and Terysa!
Glad you found it useful Cecil!
Thanks again 😊
what a great team you both are, always look forward to your video's.
Think it is great that you shipped your boat and looking forward to your adventures in the Med.!
Wow, that is a pretty extensive process Nick. And it is too bad that that un-named Country caused the vast majority of issues here. And the fact you cant name them in fear of be demonetized is nuts. But she is there finally and you guys will be sailing around the Med soon
Thank you for the details on the experience and the process. Enjoy the Med!
Sorry people are picking apart your decisions. Thank you for the detailed discussion of the why's - REALLY informative. Glad you all got to the Med OK and I'm really looking forward to living vicariously through your videos!
so, so thankful for yet another indeed valuable video. Thank you so very much and I wish you good times in the Med.
Thanks for that run-down of counting the costs of shipping vs sailing to your parents' stomping grounds. It really helps us simple-minded folk see what needs to go into making such a decision.
Also loved the dancing around the problems along the Suez route.
That was really interesting! I can’t believe how quick the time went watching this!
I love you two and love watching your videos. I hope that everyone else that are watching are learning from your experiences. Also I recommend watching sailing Yaba for your own personal enjoyment. And for hopefully easing your anxiety nick. You’ll like them I swear.😊
It's about you guys, not the boat. We can all see lots of nice boats sailing everywhere, on a million channels but only one has you! 🐬
CONGRATULATIONS on being in the Mediterranean!! Doesn't matter how you got there!! As long as you got there safe and sound!! Your boat, your life - up to you how you do it!!
So informative love it all like always. Thank you guys look forward to Greece!
Awesome, thank you!
Cool beans, you have a new subscriber. Loved this episode!
Great video, and it was very informative. I love your chemistry.
I feel so sorry for you two hope it all gets sorted asap
Very smart decision, crazy to sail all that distance
Awesome description of your latest adventures! I think you are so smart to ship around the trouble spots and to save your lovely boat and your nerves slogging to where you really wanted to be. Respect and congratulations.
Really interesting. Thanks for taking us on the journey with you
This is all extremely valuable info.
You two are the best, thanks for the honesty! ❤
Regardless, what the nay or yeah sayers comment...you summed it up when both of you stated, "...it would not work for you"...the long transit. 😊
Very interesting chat on the process.
Ross
in case you are looking to ship again in the future, please note that there are alternatives to the two shipping companies you mentioned in your episode - having shipped a number of boats to/from the Med and Middle East - dirty boats is a common issue, in your case rust stains, often sod stains from the shipping boats exhaust as well (which is very difficult to remove from teak decks for example) - where possible it is work considering shrink-wrapping the boat - not always possible and comes at a cost, but may save hassle on arrival
incredible adventure , love the patience and we will sail again attitude
That was really interesting. Thank you for sharing that information.
HA! "Someone" and the Blowfish. That was good. On a scale of 1-10, my knowledge of music might be a 1 at best and even I got that one.
You guys do what feels right for you and ignore all the naysayers.
