Sailing with the James’s
Australia
Приєднався 1 вер 2022
We bought an unfinished, aluminum catamaran and are fixing her up as we sail the world.
Welcome aboard! We are Sam, Cait, and Charlie - the James Family!
Sam has always been a FIFO worker (Fly in, Fly Out) which came with its own challenges and when our daughter Charlie came along we thought that the juice just wasn't worth the squeeze anymore, it was time for a change.
It became more important to us than ever to take time out for family and we felt what better way to do this than by travelling the world and sharing unique experiences with each other. But most importantly, want to spend time together as a family during these formative years and create lasting memories with our beautiful daughter Charlie.
In 2022, we put our house on the market and traded suburban life in Airlie Beach, Australia for an adventure of a lifetime.
Join us and come along for the adventure!

Epic sail after major refit - Letting our aluminum catamaran stretch her legs (Ep. 115)
A couple weeks ago we relaunched our aluminum sailing catamaran after a major refit. The refit was packed with lots of modifications to improve the boats performance. Now, we’ve got some fantastic weather and a long stretch of coastline ahead, giving us the perfect opportunity to get the sails up and see how she handles. We're thrilled with how everything's come together and how well the boat is performing. Join us as we embark on an epic sail down the east coast of Australia!

Living the dream ! !
ok, so was those wind speeds apparent or true? Also, were you hard on the wind? The wind guage seemed to say you were 60 degs to the wind so you were really on a shy reach. Also if youre hard on the wind, why not put both boards down? However, those speeds are great. Phil
Hi Phil, the wind speed was true. We have a down wind screecher that doesn't point the best. I am hoping for new sails in the future as our centre of effort is aft of where it should be to to stretch. The reason we only had 1 dagger boards down was pure lazy news. We were only pinching for a bit then bearing away so we stayed with the one board. -sam
Are you guys stopping in Gladstone (QLD) on your way south?
We're out at Musgrave at the moment. Not sure what our plans are. We have herd great things about the Marina in Gladstone so we may go there but we will have to see. At this stage our plan is to go down to tin can to feed the dolphins. -sam
So happy to see your views growing with every vid .

Great to see sailing close to wind speed 🎉 a few bigger sailing channels would love to be doing so well, looking forward to your adventures in the new year

Cheers, we are excited for the new year too! 🙏 -sam
Could use a clear plastic bottle filled with fairy lights as decor.
We have some fairy lights onboard! Might give this a go! Thank you! -Cait
that hull slaps noisy
It can be. -sam
I think the windward bord gives te best lift against drift.
Hi Hanson, use both boards for different applications. In heavy seas is prefer to use my windward board but inside the reef on our boat she seems to prefom better with the leward board down. I start with both boards down and as the wind builds I start to lift the windward board, once it is all the way up then I start to lift the leward board. In strong winds when I am triple reefed I usually only have 1/3 the leward board down and if the swell is up then it would be the windward board. -sam
@@sailingwiththejamess Thank you that is very helpful. The design I am working on has two buoyancy keel wing shaped hulls 90% submerged holding a wide plaining hull above the waterline between them. The outboard hulls can be tilted outward so that the leeward hull provides lift against rotation. Waves can not get trapped between the hulls and pas over the buoyancy unless very large. I believe the greatest compromise in multihull design is trying to live in the buoyancy.
happy sailing , grins all round , 3 happy chapies ..... merry xmas and happy new year to the 3 of you , can't wait for the next video
Huge smiles all around! Cheers! Can't wait to share more with you in the new year ✨️ -Cait
Merry Christmas to you and wishing you a happy and healthy New Year!
Your mainsail looks massive from that angle looking up, also your hull extensions look like the water comes away from them really nicely. Did you get any professional advice when you made those or did you just follow the lines of the hull and added that length on? She seems to sail well in that breeze considering the weight you've added, I'm unsure if you remember i commented asking you if you had concerns about all the weight you were adding, but it doesn't look to hinder her at all. It looks like all the hard work is paying off in spades now, excellent stuff
CHEERS! Our mainsail is big for the boat she is 94m2. It is super low aspect which is great for cruising but we find that as the sail is 20 yrs old she is bagged out and with an 8 meter boom it brings the centre of effort a bit far aft. That is why our mast doesn't have any rake at the moment, I am trying to bring the centre of effort closer to the lateral resistance. We did put weight on but we also took weight off with going to dyneema rigging adding additional buoyancy in the sterns ect. We are a little heavier but not by much, you can only tell when we are full of fuel and water. With regards to the sterns I received alot of advice from lots of different people. One of my closest friends studied to be a naval architect and is heavily involved in the racing scene, the owner of cairns boat yard is the brother of the designer of mumby catamarans and he has built several himself, i myself am a marine engineer with a bachelor in nautical science. There were many other people that offered valuable advice along the way but you are right I have the build plans for the boat and I tried to follow the egsisting lines while stretching as much as I thought I could get away with and adding as much buoyancy as I thought I could get away with. -sam
Using that drill with your winches is genius! Basically turns your manual winches into electric. Super smart way to save money and your back. Good on ya mate!
I have no decor ideas but I so want to get my multihull soon
Hope you do to! Can definitely recommend the lifestyle! 🤙❤️ -Cait
Great to see you enjoying the benefits of your hard work from the refit.
Cheers, we are stoked with how she's going! 😊 -Cait
Thanks guys!
Cheers Trev! You are a legend! Thank you! -Cait
Is that an impact driver you were using on the hayards Sam?
No its the new brush less drill. Meant to be good for 130nm. I looked at getting a electric winch handle but they were a bit expensive so I got this from bunnings for $140 and got the winch adapter off Amazon for $50. It works great and this way if it cips a wave or something then its not such a huge deal. -sam
@@sailingwiththejamess nice.. Yeh those electric winch handles were developed by Ned Kelly's descendants I reckon. In comparison, some lime green Ryobi can afford to be quite sacrificial in comparison.. Plus it can be used around the boat for other jobs.
My thoughts exactly. Our main is over 100kgs and she lifts it fine on low gear. -sam
The little boat fairies getting a crop of freckles 😂 but still wants to climb in the bilges over dads shoulder. 😉
Thank you Clive!! She's getting a few freckles along the nose Ridge, and she thrives on helping out in the engine room, she loves it! 🥰🥰 -Caot
We also love Port Clinton and lived in Yeppoon for 33 years now boating and living on board cruising Moreton Bay, noticed when you show Navionics screen you don't have it showing head up, if you want head up just press triangle icon bottom left of screen 3 times, I find it much easier especially going around islands, safe travelling.
Cheers Sarah, We love the area around Yeppoon. The water is so clear and inviting at the keppels and then either side you have great places to go in a blow. You are so lucky to have it as your back yard! -sam
If those dolphin striker cable eyes had been 20cm higher they would have stayed out of the water reducing that extra bit of drag.
Oh definitely! I look at then and the inner fore stays dragging through the water wishing they were a bit higher. I tried to make them higher by lightning the boat but was not as successful in that endeavour as I would have liked to be. -sam
been waiting for this update. bloddyyy awesome mates
THANKS MATE! WE GREATLY APPRECIATE IT 🙏 🤙✨️ -Cait
Yes! Having that lovely beach to yourselves is a great reward for the work. Good to hear about the speed, and you guys are cruisin' nicely. Best part of the video: the clips of Charlie and Frank at the end. 🥰
Cheers Frank, Charlie and our frank are the dynamic duo. We are sooo happy that they get along so well! The Beach was fantastic and the best thing about the speed is we can now sail in light winds which was our ultimate goal! We always appreciate your support Frank, thank you and have a happy new year! -sam
That's pretty good boat speed verses wind speed. Your boat is a bit more than twice as heavy as a Mumby and I would have thought that your boat speed verses wind speed wouldn't be as good as it is and you were almost closed hulled. That's impressive with all that weight.
Thanks Rob! She's a Crowther 🤙 We are very pleased with all the modifications, wait till she has new sails on her -Cait
Hope you guys had a great Xmas. Thanks for letting us come along on your journey. At 60 I think it's too late for me now, the missus has never been on a sailboat that's moving, and I don't know how to get her on one, that's not a charter. Just want to let her experience it once, in a nice easy ride. Someone suggested a club, but I don't want to just throw her in a race, that'll be the end of the dream if I do.
Hi Shane, On the east coast of Australia on average about half the cruising community is 60 or more. There is more 70 yr old out here than you would think so I definitely don't think it's to late for you my friend! We had a wonderful Christmas at a hime made yacht club on keppel island with other cruisers. Have a great new years. -sam
Well the smile on your faces tell the whole story. So happy that the refit you did is really paying off for you guys that is amazing it's wonderful. All your hard work all those days and nights sweating and working finally you get to see the fruits of your labor. Another very nice video as always guys stay safe and God bless
Thank you so much for everything Kris! We are stoked with the outcome and it's been so much fun to get back out on the water with all the changes! Hope you have a very happy and healthy New Years! We appreciate you 🙏 ❤️ -Cait
ONLY Three people need to be happy with your Improvements and I can see three smiles! Your extra speed is fantastic, improving the performance and adding safety to your voyages. It also makes for longer passages with the ability to avoid bad weather. The improvements in speed decreases the pressure on your rig and sails, makes better response to helm input. P.S. like the redundancy of your Bilge pump system. I cannot wait for your assessment of the Dyneema shrouds after a bit of a workout. I think you will have those smiles for quite a long time. Congratulations again , wishing you Fair winds and smooth seas. please keep these videos up
Cheers for the kind words, we are so stoked with how she is going! -sam
Nice 👍
Thank you!
Just got back from helping a mate steam his stinkboat from Cairns to Sanctuary Cove. Had flashbacks about the humidity watching Sam sweat like a gypsy with a mortgage. Pity you didn’t get to Middle Percy the caretaker there does a mean home brew! Hope you get to Lady Musgrave it was awesome. We use a mushroom shaped stainless table lamp which lights down at the table top- good lighting ambience at night.
I like this mushroom lamp idea that points the light down, I'll look them up, and bonus that ss doesn't melt in the sun 😆💜 Yes Cairns was getting humid and hot, beautiful places, very luscious and green but yes humid! We stopped at Rescue Bay at Percy for the night, love the percys and the A frame - just magical there ✨️ -Cait
Frank has indeed seems to just roll with the waves and very accepting of his "forever home " at sea - he is a great addition to your Sailing Family.
He's doing great and very lucky with his personality, he very very chilled and relaxed and loves to hang out with whoever is on watch! -Cait
EXCELLENT RESULTS.
Thank you Brad! We are happy with all the modifications -Cait
Two weeks ago I helped a mate move his stinkboat down from Cairns to Sanctuary Cove . I had flashbacks to how humid it was watching Sam sweat like a gypsy with a mortgage. I also had to laugh at the melting table lights. We use mushroom shaped LED lamps in Stainless Steel. They give a diffused light aimed down at the tabletop. Pity you didn’t stop at middle percy the caretaker there is a great bloke
I like the mushroom lights idea. The led strip's are left over from another project and we have been looking into other options. We stopped at rescue Bay over night on the perceys as she was a northerly but Cait loves the perceys so I imagine we will stop there again on our way north next yr. -sam
I’ve been waiting for this update. Great result all round, you must be stoked! Well done guys.
Cheers! It was a good run for it, we definitely got to stretch her legs! 😁 -Cait
loved this video. The modifications you've made to the hulls look to be paying off with extra speed. Keep em coming
They are definitely paying off and the best thing about them isn't the top speed but we can now sail in a light breeze. Fair weather sailers here we come lol! -sam
Wow amazing speed. Looks like it was handling it with easy. I was worried how it would track with the keels removed, doesn't look like the removal effected the tracking. Cheers guy's
Thanks! it was a really fun sail and great stretch down the coast. we removed the skegs (no keels) that encased the prop shafts for the ability to beach the boat, it was a bitter-sweet decisions as we loved that the skegs provided protection to the running gear and gave us the ability to beach the boat, but happy that we removed them as they were toed in and has freed the boat up. We are stoked with the outcome from everything! 💜 -Cait

Does the sail catch the wind...if so , the color is fine
Hahaha well tom the 20 yr old sail catches the wind perfect down wind but it is debatable as to how well it goes up wind lol. Having said that i understand what you mean about the colour and i completely agree that is why cait makes all the colour decisions. -sam

Kings and BCF Sups can be trickier to stand up on compared to solid sups. I experienced that myself. Mates laughing at me cos I couldnt stand up very well.. Then tried their solid boards and it was easy.. They tried my inflatable and had more difficulty. Sam, the problem is exaggerated for us good looking blokes who carry a few extra kilos....urm .. insulation. But thats why Sup yoga looks so easy.. Better boards.
Oh wow I was wondering if i was a. It heavy for the board. Last weight in i was 117kg so I guess there's a bit of insulation there lol. I might look into a soled one then. It's a super fun sport and one of the sups has failed already so we may need to replace it. Cheers sam
@@sailingwiththejamess Yep I really struggled. Im sure another boat will have a solid one you can beg borrow or steal to try at some point. Or even an off the beach hire co. I still love my sup. I use it for putting out crab traps in local waterways (Central Coast NSW). Though I do kneel most of the time due to the balance issue. Enjoying your vids mate.. Merry xmas.
Yeah that's an aw idea. I'll keep an eye out for one on the back of a boat. Don't know if I'd be brave enough to put pot out on the sup lol, she is a bit crocky in alot of the creeks up here. Cheers for the support brother and merry Christmas.
@@sailingwiththejamess All good mate.. Merry xmas.

The white looks good hopefully it helps stoping melting your thongs.
Your channel's startup theme about us wishing to drop everything to sail has been overused. Sounds stupid.
Hey Mloret! We appreciate you watching! Yes I understand what you mean, we are greatful to be living out on the water spending time with Charlie. If you get a chance, we've just finished a major refit to our boat and hope you are able to spare a few minutes and check out a few videos of the refit. We have done some major modifications to the boat! Hope you enjoyed the rest of the video and hope you are able to check out some of our others! ! Cheers M! -Cait
