    That is the place I went for wood for the very first time! I don't think I met Lars but one of the ladies at the front desk took me for a tour of their selections and discusses how they did pricing and was very helpful and informative to a guy who was 'drinking from the fire hose'.

    Americans are so lucky with the hardwoods they have readily available to them. Very informative video thanks a lot

      Charlie Cage yeah exactly. I'm just jealous really because over here lumber costs so much money and is limited in variety

      Norwegian Wood Yes, I guess the softwoods predominate as land get closer to the top of the earth ... I live on the border where we still have at least some hardwoods, but most have to get shipped in

      Charlie Cage : This is so true:
      Several years ago while vacationing in Acapulco, Mexico, a group of guests at the resort I was staying were having a friendly Happy Hour conversation. A response to what someone had said brought an interesting statement from a Mexican lady at our table. This really made me stop and realize what was being said.
      The lady, who happened to be the owner of a plastics manufacturer in Mexico City, was very well spoken and had made a point caught by everyone in the room. This lady said that many in other countries are offended by the arrogance portrayed by many who refer themselves as U.S. citizens as being absurd thinking themselves as being the only American people. Her point was very true in that everywhere in the world people from the U. S. are called Statesman. This brought to mind that a Britt will say; “Oh, You’re from The States!”
      Canadian’s, Mexican’s, Brazilian’s, Chilean’s, Ecuadorians to name a few are all Americans. Those countries are all in the continent of The Americas.
      The point was also made that the majority of the people who live in the Latin American countries had roots extending farther back than some others. This point was that when the Spaniards settled in Mexico and South America, they married the Native American people who lived there for decades.
      Instead, the Anglo Sextons who settled in the north now known as The United States and Canada Murdered their Native people and rounded them up like cattle, therefore not having ancestry dating as far back to the land.

    Good video for a beginner looking to learn about purchasing lumber from the mill, for me this is really the only place I go...better prices, better quality versus the box store.

      The ShavingWood Workshop Thanks for the note Tommy, yes, when you have mills around, and know your way around wood with experience, I would agree, still there are specialty woods from the tropics that it's nice to have for certain builds too which are not available locally. Good points buddy, thanks

    That was a great tour. I have some mills hear in PA. But have been intimidated by not having "lingo language". I don't want to waist time not do l want to waist the lumber yards time. I will go on their website. That mail order sounds good.

      Charlie Wood I would have thought your area would be pretty rich with lumber availability, but sounds like not so much ... thanks for the note, good to know

      WoodWorkWeb No the big box stores have wiped out the mom and pop stores it is what it is but I keep looking

    • @knecht105
      @knecht105  9 років тому

      Charlie Wood That's a pity because the big box stores around here have very poor selection of specialty woods so they didn't really affect that part of the business. Perhaps there are some smaller mills in your area too, they are another source of wood. Thanks to the update Charlie ... great to have you with us

    Another woodworking video that makes me want to move to the USA or Canada. Try finding a shop like that in Europe......

      +JD Worx Really?, I did no know finding lumber in Europe was that difficult

    • @marquisbois990
      @marquisbois990 9 років тому

      +WoodWorkWeb Near on impossible in France, Germany and Spain these days, unless you're after local Oak. Not too bad in UK, but prices through the roof last few years and no chance of such a large selection in one place.

    Irregular wood imho should be weighed. The average density of a species of wood should be reasonably consistent at a given moisture content. Be more consistent for the consumer and more accurate for the lumberyard.

    @Kuntzie1311 8 років тому +1

    Yeah, wood is not very flat and straight. Especially if you shop for wood at places like Menards and Home Depot.

      Backyard Woodworking Yes, one of the markets for this business is the boat build business more so than the furniture type businesses, so I think that helps them too.

      ***** I have not thought about teaching boat building, and I really do no know any old Japanese boat building techniques, but I love that style of boat building.
