- British Version Of C.W Mcall's Convoy
It was a foggy day on the sixth of May
In a Scammell haulin' bricks
It was just crackin' dawn and I started to yawn
Cos I couldn't find any nice chicks.
I'd tried Newport Pagnell, Toddington,
And even Watford Gap,
But after so many eggs and chips, sausage and beans
What I really needed was a nap.
It's a lonely life, truck driving
But it's better than a bike
Cos when you're up in the cab, you're the king of the road
And it's dead romantic, like.
And then I remembered my two-way radio,
So I started feelin' better,
And I thought "I'll start a convoy"
"You know, just like that American feller."
[Chorus]
Thus began the saga
On the M1 Motorway
Of the biggest bloomin' convoy
Outside the USA.
Why not join our line-up?
It's completely free.
All you need is transport
And a current MOT.
Convoy!
[On the CB]
Hello, this is Super Scouse callin'. Anyone out there, come on?
Hello, hello, this is Plastic Chicken, go off?
That's "come on" - what's your load, Plastic Chicken?
Er, well it would have been quick-drying cement, but the rain got in - do you know anyone who wants to buy a three-ton brick?
So there we were, the two of us,
At the start of something big.
There was Plastic Chicken with his brick on wheels,
And me in my big rig.
With every junction that we passed
Others would tag on
There was even a London Transport bus
"Hey, that's a nice wagon - fares please..."
It certainly was an impressive sight,
To see us on the road
There was vehicles of every shape and size
It certainly had growed.
Suddenly there was this commotion,
There was a circus, and a fair.
There was an animal acrobatic act
"Ooh look - a bear in the air!"
[Chorus]
You're listening to the saga,
On the M1 Motorway.
Of the biggest blooming convoy,
Outside the USA.
We're half-way through our story,
But please don't go away.
They're on Spaghetti Junction
"We could be here all day..."
Convoy!
[On the CB] Hello, Plastic Chicken to Super Scouse, gerroff, I mean come in, er, come on - oh, do I have to say this every time?
Yeah - have you seen any fuzzboxes? - that's slang for police cars.
Er, Jackanory, Super Scouse - that's slang for No!
That's Negatory, you berk...
Ooh I say, is this a private convoy or can anyone join in?
What's your wheels, our kid?
Would you believe, a camper...?
Spaghetti Junction was coming up
So we were bound to lose a few.
And sure enough, the fork-lift truck,
Disappeared heading up towards Crewe.
The combine harvester shred a wheel,
And the driver lost control.
And a mobile DJ crashed his van,
So we ain't gonna play no Soul, 10 - 4.
[Chorus]
So we end our story,
On the M1 Motorway.
Of the biggest blooming convoy,
Outside the USA.
This record is good value,
As you can plainly see.
It's labelled as a tax disc
Though it's a Felony
Convoy!
[On the CB]
Er, Plastic Chicken to Super Scouse, there's a big black limo coming up behind...
Er, what about it?
Well it's got a flag on the front and a funny number plate - "HRH 1"
Mercy sakes, good buddy, you'd better give it the front door and wave her on, like...
Will do, Super Scouse, I'm waving her on - ooh look, she's waving back, isn't that nice...
Plastic Chicken, do you want to stick it in behind that suicide jockey?
What's a suicide jockey?
As it happens, How's about...
Er, Plastic Chicken, don't you think you'd better change gear for this hill?
What's wrong with the gear I've got on, doesn't it look right?
Change gear, ram your foot on the floor and change the gear, what you talking about, you don't know how to drive a truck do you, you've no idea how to drive a truck, you're mad... (continue to fade)
just noticed CW McCall sings 'we ain't gonna play no soul, 10-4'
“Convoy G.B.” was recorded by Laurie Lingo and the Dipsticks, who were actually BBC Radio 1 DJs Dave Lee Travis and Paul Burnett. The song was released in early 1976, and reportedly reached number 4 on the British pop chart.
U.S. Friend here. That was awesome. I grew up with C.W. McCall's "Convoy", so this was definitely something different. (Afraid I don't know much about the trucking industry in the UK, however.) Good Job!
Watch this and you will learn a lot. Like the fact that you are more likely to see a Mercedes Cab-over registered in Lithuania than a Mack.
I remember when this came out. Absolutely brilliant!! I say that as an ex lorry driver.
As an American I love this version a lot! It's variation from the orginal really makes it unique and still close enough to the original! Well 10-10 on the side and keep the greasy side down!
One of those I referenced when I was in the States under the heading of "Let me show you the songs of my people!" along with "not the wanderer" and "toast".
This was by two British DJ's called Dave lee Travis and Paul Burnett. They performed under the name " Laurie Lingo and the dipsticks". It reached number 4 in the UK charts in 1976.
my dad used to drive a scammell. when i was a lad i would run home from junior school to get a lift back to his works, which was all of 2 miles away. but i loved it lol grat memories
Bloody funny I must say, thanks, you just made my day.
I was 21 & just left the Army when this came out. LOL

Thanks Andy

Cracking Song. Scammell For Ever!
Well put together. I remember this in the charts, recorded by 'Laurie Lingo and the Dipsticks', who were really 2 of BBC Radio's DJs - Dave Lee Travis and Paul Burnett. Excellent

FOHEN BRILLIANT !!!!!!!!
Wonderful , it deserves more airtime than it got !
It's an awesome variation from C.W. McCall's songs the original and the version for the movie (which both are awesome too)! I like all 3 versions!
Quality, wish they still made songs like these :)

0:19 An important historical document - Toddington Services southbound from the overbridge. And I was taking photos of lakes and mountains which are now ten a penny!
"after [all that food], what I really needed was a nap" - all those years ago, I NEVER thought of an alternative rhyme for "Watford Gap"(!)
I would like to say that novelty records are better nowadays. Well, I'd like to!
Great illustrations!

Excellent

that record IS good value!
a brilliant spoof....
In the interest of people curious about the story behind this: "In 1976, a parody (of the US song Convoy) by Laurie Lingo & The Dipsticks entitled Convoy GB made #4 on the UK singles chart. The name "Laurie Lingo" is a pun; in the UK, a large truck is known as "lorry", and thus "lorry lingo" would be "truck slang". The act actually consisted of BBC Radio 1 DJs Dave Lee Travis and Paul Burnett with "The Dipsticks" being the Top of the Pops vocalists The Ladybirds. The parody used the same tune, but altered the song's lyrics to take place in the UK, with dialogue featuring Travis and Burnett as truckers "Superscouse" and "Plastic Chicken"." --- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convoy_(song)#Remakes_and_covers
So cool singing dude
Lee T. Walker thanks for sharing this history of the song Convoy (GB)! It's a great bit of radio history!

Lucy Wright Scottish people
@@9hd- Both Dave Lee Travis and Paul Burnett are English, not Scottish.

From the USA: "Crikey!"
copied comment
:-))
i want this song
@dreamer1215 : Me too. I might even still have it somewhere! Good memories.
The "it's a felony" line is ironic: the real artist on the record, BBC DJ Dave Lee Travis, was later convicted of indecent assault and served a three-month prison sentence.
He received a 2 year suspended sentence
@@duncanholding7636 Per wiki: "On Friday 26 September 2014 he was sentenced to three months in prison, suspended for two years."
@@robmclean4352 a suspended sentence means he didn't go inside....
@@duncanholding7636 Ah, got it. (Still doesn't look good on the ol' resume...)
@@robmclean4352 indeed not. He has made a comeback on the radio of sorts but nothing on the scale of his former career
Good job this vidéo
nice job mate.
Made me laugh!!!! So much 😭😭😭😭
DLT and PAUL BURNETT,, classic!

Rubber Duck, move over, the Plastic Chicken is a-comin' through!!!
What's next?

"I was hauling cement but the rain got in, anyone wanna buy some bricks?" lolololol

One of those truckers sounds like Wacko Warner
Class
can you remember the 2 radio one DJs behind this masterpiece?
Dave Lee Travis & Paul Burnett. They even wrote the cover notes for the "Radio 1 1976 Chartbusters" album of which I have in my collection of over 600 albums.
quality
very funny
that was meant to say "great". the excitement got to me a bit lol
Laurie Lingo and the Dipdicks alias Dave Lee Travis and Paul Burnett from 1975 great
Lmao, this is great....
:D Great :D
brill
THIS was voiced by Paul Burnett and Dave Lee Travis, if I remember correctly.
Lol. Nice one :)
The DIY video on this should be period classic trucks proper to 1976. DLT's "couldn't find any nice chicks" line is rather unfortunate.
mwe152 Scania 142?
If you like check out the song Driving a truck with my high heels on!
Somebody please post the lyrics ?
Its Barry and Terry.LOL
