Wow. Thanks for this. I bought the MD200 specifically to use w MIDI. Naturally the Boss manual is completely worthless. Huge thanks for putting this together. Invaluable!
I didn't come to learn about the midi features. But I was praying to find out how to access extending the memory bank. Pages 10, 14 of the manual didn't make it clear (to me) how to access this feature. You just showed me how to get to pages that I needed @ 2:53. Accessing the memory switching range by editing the ETF (EXTENT FROM) and ETT (EXTENT TO) settings 1 - up to 127. Thank you so much!! 🙏👍
thanks my dude, made me realize I need to resolder my midi cable, which was pined out differently...thought I was going crazy :)
Only one word : thank you (actually that’s two😂). This video is a mass Time saving. Very clear 😊 a must see for someone who want to understand MIDI and 200 series
You are a life saver my friend! Thanks for the comprehensive guides on everything MIDI. Your videos are BY FAR the best on the topic.
Man, Thanks for share your knowledge. Keep the good work.
Great there is a video about the midi stuff!
First off, thank you for such an informative video !!! I started off trying to communicate from my px-8 via 1/4 to 1/8 trs from my meris midi i/o box. That does not work with these 200 series pedals. Your cable diagram saved the day 😊😊🤘🤘. Going from the thru on the midi i/o box to the pedal work perfectly!!!! Thanks again!!!
Awesome! Great to hear!
UA-cam setup is looking good.
Great content as usual.
Thanks!
Thank you so much mate !!
Excellent, thank you.
thank you!
The alternative pin diagram.... Suddenly a great veil has been lifted 🤯
Great videos. Question. Looking at the Boss adapters. I've found two different kinds. 1. Shorter cables show "midi multidirectional" listing "5 pin 3 way exit" and the one you show listing "5 pin straight connector". What's the difference? (I ask, cuz first one are available in shorter lengths)
Awesome video, but I just noticed the pinout for those Boss midi TRS cables is Tip - 5, ring - 4, sleeve - 2. These are standard type A midi TRS cables.
Boss accepts any midi TRS type A cables ! Befaco sells 3xcables packs for around 10€/15$. And there are many other options than DIY or the official cables !
The MIDI cable pin diagram explains so much. Why they don't offer pedal board lengths for the MIDI cable I don't understand.
I would like to control the looper function via MIDI. CTRL1 CC=80, Value 0=Off, 127=On. I can assign LPS "loop on/of" to CTL1 and use the CC command to turn it on and off. I was thinking I would assign LPC to CTRL2, but have no idea what the values might be for play/overdub/stop. Any ideas?
man, this is a great video, butt i been searching for another one that you did, abot these boss 200 series, that talk about for exaple expand memory, but i couldnt find it, could you please link that ? thanxs!!
Can I connect a source audio tap tempo switch to the midi TRRS input on my boss dd200 to control the tempo on my delay? I’m trying to synchronize the tempo with my delay and loop pedal (boss rc2 that doesn’t have a midi in/out but DOES have a 3.5mm input for said tempo switch)
Hi - really useful as always - struggling with a Blackstar live logic controller and 3 midi devices - it sends on OMNI or individual midi channels - I have MD200 and DD200 and Blackstar S1-45 combo - how do I get a single patch change that can control the 3 different midI channels assigned to the devices
Sending a change via OMNI isn't ideal, but can still be used. I would program each device to the same PC value you would send. For example PC 1 could be the clean patch for all 3 devices, PC 2 the distortion patch for all 3, etc.
Wondered what sy200 midi could do. Thanks for answering question
I ordered the CME WIDI jack to set up where I can bypass the auto engage feature on the OD-200 using my phone… I’ve seen videos where people do it, but nobody ever explains how to set it up. Do you have any info or links to videos on that?
Great video, but I'm still seeking a way to connect a DD-200 with an MD-200 and have their delay times sync up. Is that possible?
I am having decent troubles with midi. What I am trying to accomplish is turning on a preset with A/B channels on the the EQ 200. Any tips?
Can MD200's effects loop be switched via midi?
Could be a cool way to control a non midi pedal. Would be like adding another loop to my loop switcher.
Can the 200 series (specifically DD-200) receive its tempo via Midi in? I'm envisioning using a loop pedal (possibly RC-500) to set a tempo, and then use a delay pedal with its tempo already set by the loop pedal. Is this possible?
Do program change messages turn the pedal on and off? Or do I have to send a PC and a CC to the unit to get it to go to the correct patch and turn on? I just want to be able to press one button on a midi controller and have it switch patches and turn on. Seems like boss's interface for controlling these pedals via midi is a bit cumbersome and clunky.
Heyman! Thanks for the video. So I am routing my midi controller (MC6) into the OD-200, and then midi out to other midi-enabled pedals. So I will need keep nTH (Midi thru) to ON - that is clear. But what about the other settings? Does midi transmit also need to be on?
I'd just keep everything else off. MIDI Thru will let any MIDI messages pass through, which is all you'll need.
@@ManBunMetalHead Terrific! Thanks a lot man!
Thx for this video and all your stuff it's great. I'm still wondering if I can use the tap tempo of the DD 200 to control the tempo of an hx stomp via this 5 pin midi cable. Can you just say yes or no, and if yes I will figure out how to do it by myself. Thx again.
Thanks! I'm about 98% positive the answer is yes. Good luck.
@@ManBunMetalHead thx for the quick answer ! I guess it's a CC change message (I watched yur midi basics video too !)and I know the midi clock is set on #64 on my hx, so I will jump in and buy the DD200, I will tell you if I succeed, or fail 😅
Hey Man Bun .... love your channel and responsiveness.
I wish you would do a video on how to update the EQ-200. There is one ambiguous one from Boss itself, but it uses the MD-200 as an example for all the series 200 pedals, but the EQ-200 has different interfaces. My problem was getting either my Mac or Windows Laptop to see the pedal in the UpdSMF player when downlaoded, so couldn't import the MIDI files. I will look out for a video as I said, the EQ-200 isn't the same animal for updating as the others.
Thanks man. That's interesting about the EQ-200. I've only updated the MD-200 but I been planning on getting the EQ-200. Didn't know the updating process was different. I'll probably pick it up soon and do an update video. Keep a look out.
@@ManBunMetalHead I have Roland involved now. Great sounding pedal ... very quiet & if only used to change volumes with the PC changes with an ES8 it is a pretty powerful tool for live gigging ... whenever that’s possible again in Canada
I'm only just getting into midi and it's a hell of a lot to learn. Noob question here, but can I use midi to get it to sync with the clock on my drum machine?
Definitely should be able to
This video is excellent, thank you for posting it. I had the OD-200 for a bit but was frustrated by the user interface. The fact that an industry leading music company like Roland/Boss offers a product with such a limited, outdated, and confusing UI in 2019 is absolutely unacceptable. Sorry Boss: major fail here.
Absolutely agree with you.
i really wish i could just manage all my settings and presets with an app on my computer for my eq200. there is a usb port i dont understand why i cant. f
I'm sorry, but I have to strongly disagree with this. The OD-200 is an incredibly simple pedal, it doesn't need any more than what it's got. It's not real intuitive, I can agree w/that, but if you can type the above sentence, you can figure it out, you just can't give up if it doesn't come naturally. I hated it for a few hours, but it's a monster pedal that has saved me so much board space & sounds amazing. Now that it's slaved to my two other 200 series pedals, I hardly every mess w/it unless I'm experimenting. It has its flaws, but there's no other pedal that offers all those tones at that quality for anywhere near $250.
Every time I turn on my pedalboard, my MD200 is in the 'ON' state...how can I make it be in the 'OFF' state, when I plug in my board. I can't find the setting, please help!
Thanks man bun ... I have a request ... Link the transmit channel to the digitech whammy ? Does the cc in the od200 save per program setting .. So the cc will control octave on one song for the whammy and 5th for another song? Im in confusion that cc on the od200 is per program or global?
That's a tough one. As far as I know, CC's are set globally, but I've never used the 200 series pedals to send CC's.
@@ManBunMetalHead thanks for replying MB .. I asked in a well known shop recently and they did not know either. Im not really prepared to shell out £170. / €200. On a midi box and cant see any other options so turning it manually seems only way.
Is there any benefit to using a midi controller with the IR200?
Hi, great video. Is it possible to control one of the 200 series with another 200 series pedals via midi? I'd like to be able to call up patches on the dd200 and md200 from the od200. Like, having patch #1 on the od200 recall DM and DD patches when activated. Does that make any sense?
Definitely possible. On the OD200, you'll have to turn your PC OUT setting (Pot) ON and make sure the MIDI Transmit Channel (tCh) on the OD200 matches the MIDI receive channel (rCh) on the units receiving the MIDI message.
@@ManBunMetalHead thanks a lot! I'll try that.
Does anyone know if the 1/8” midi plugs on the Boss 200 series pedals powered? For example can I connect a WIDI device without it needing an outside power source?
I'm fairly positive they are not powered
How do I set up so I can select patches using my iPhone? I’m new to MIDI and still completely lost after watching all the videos that “explain” how it works…
Thanks for this great video :) I'm trying to setup the od 200 for a friend of mine, but when I send a program change message to let's say PC 10, it goes to preset 11 on the pedal. So like on the pedal, preset 1 is PC 0. I think the manual setting (which should be PC 0) is not active for some reason. Do you maybe know how to solve this?
Unfortunately, that's how most of the 200 series are set up. You can change it in the menu. I go over it briefly at 5:10. You'll have to change ever single program channel number, which might be a pain.
Thanks for responding :) man... that will be a pain indeed. But it's worth it, to have everything lining up
Hey. Man Bun, thanks so much for this video. It’s a TON of info. I’m using a Disaster Area Micro pro and I’m trying to get it to change patches on both my Strymon Timeline and my MD 200. It works on the Strymon, but I can’t get the Disaster Area to do anything on the MD 200. I’ve got a Boss branded midi cable, and I’ve tried plugging directly into the MD 200, as well as daisy chained after my Timeline. Nothing. It’s pretty frustrating. The software on the Boss is up to date. Any suggestions? Thanks again
My first thought was the MIDI cable which is what gets most people, but the BOSS one should work. Other than that making sure the MIDI send from the Disaster Area and the MIDI receive on the MD200 are the same. If you have a multimeter you could pin out the cable just to verify, but I wouldn't worry about it too much. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what else to try though. Do you have any other MIDI controllers you could try with the MD200?
@@ManBunMetalHead thanks so much for the response! I actually was working on it this morning and made some progress. I got my Disaster Area into my Timeline, out of the Timeline into the Boss. They are both switching patches now when I hit the Disaster Area button, but the problem is they are both switching at the same time. I believe I should be able to switch them independently, but I’m having some trouble figuring that out. I’ve tried changing the MIDI input to separate channels (which I know is ultimately what I want to do) but when I do that, the Boss no longer receives Midi messages… I believe at this point it’s a Disaster Area question… thanks again for the knowledge
Your DIN to TRS wiring diagram (B protocol) is wrong and just cost me a bunch of time (or maybe I'm not seeing it in the right way. Numbering is different to other diagrams). MIDI works just fine through an A protocol TRS MIDI cable (pretty much the current standard). You don't need the specific Boss brand cable nor to make your own cable.
Wish they would have done the same approach to SY-200 for their previous 200 series. The bigger screen is a much better UI experience.
Completely agree! Being playing around with the SY200 and love that big display.
@@ManBunMetalHead Why don' t you do a video where you have multiple 200 series pedals being slaved to the SY-200? I was surprised you didn't cover that here, then I realized the pedal wasn't out when you published this vid lol. I just take all the SY out of the mix when I want a clean channel "preset", but still use it to control my other two 200 pedals. If you're looking for video ideas...
Just as a warning to anyone planning on buying one of these, there is a serious problem with MIDI clock functionality with all the 200 series pedals. MIDI clock sync is a global parameter rather than per preset, so it's not possible to have one preset using a fixed tempo, and another preset syncing to an external clock. Worse than that, once the pedal detects a clock signal it locks to that and after that will only respond to tempo changes by MIDI clock - so even if you stop the clock on your controller, the pedal will stay locked forever to the last tempo that you set and no preset or knob-twiddling can change it. The only way of clearing it is to power cycle the pedal. The SYNC parameter description says that the pedal will only sync if it detects MIDI clock and will normally use the internal tempo, however this isn't what happens in practice.
I wish you could do these pedals with boss es 8
Does this series of pedals have an editor?
I have synced my tempo correctly and it works! However, every time I go thru the memory slots and get back to "MAN", it is no longer in sync (goes to 75 bpm) until I turn the master clock tempo knob. Any suggestions?
Same problem with the DD200, i tried many ways to solve this. But still did not find the solution...
This explanation is great!
Question - how do I turn the pedal off via midi? Before I updated my 200 series pedals, I could scroll downward (3-2-1-off) using my midi switcher, but after the update they scroll around the horn (3-2-1-99-98, etc). Just trying to save loop space. Any suggestions?
You should be able to do this by sending a control change. You'll have to go into the menu and find "SW CC" on the EQ200 or "SWC" on the other pedals and find out what the CC# is. Then send a value of 0 to turn in off and 127 to turn it on. You might have to play around with the values, but that should get you in the right direction.
@@ManBunMetalHead It worked! Still learning about MIDI and you have helped tremendously. Thanks!
@@ManBunMetalHead hey I was having the same issue with my rjm PBC10 finally got it to work but now for some reason I have to click my foot switch twice to turn it on and twice again for off 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️any advice?
Sorry to ask, but how to control od 200 with a modeler like hx stomp, like pedal on off, boost on off etc.
manual is really confusing
thank you
Hello blogger, I have purchased BOSS OD200 and also a 5-pin to 3.5mm MIDI wire. After reading your explanation, I still cannot control my OD200 through MIDI control.
May I ask if it is necessary to purchase this MIDI cable from BOOS in order to fully control the OD200?
You may need the Boss MIDI cable. Not all 5 pin MIDI to 1/8" will work with the 200 series pedals.
@@ManBunMetalHead Okay, thank you for your answer. I'll buy a BOSS one to try.
@@ManBunMetalHead Hello, I have already purchased BOSS BMIDI5-35, but it is still connected to my Nural DSP quad core and there is no response. I have also carefully reviewed your MIDI settings on the 200 series and ultimately cannot control my OD200 with quad core. I would like to ask if these two cannot be connected and used. I watched other UA-cam bloggers and used quad cortex to control the preset switching of Effects unit such as H9 delay. I have replaced the cable now, but I still can't control it. I wonder if it's possible to switch the OD200 preset with a specialized MIDI controller.
So when I'm in the menu trying to set the memory EXT FROM/EXT TO, it wont let me go past M4? It just cycles through MAN-M4? ON/OFF switch toggles down, MEMORY footswitch toggles up. Not sure what I'm missing here? Does it need a firmware update or something? One of the reasons I got it was to have many different EQ presets for different pedals/amps etc.. No idea why it won't let me go past M4. HELP haha!
Nevermind, there is a firmware update with the increased presets. About to hit it up now.
Yep, was about to mention that. Same thing happened to be when I bought the pedal. You should be good to go after you update it.
@@ManBunMetalHead Yeah I got it all sorted out, but you're cool as shit for replying. Love your channel! You need a Boss endorsement for real..
Or you DESERVE a Boss endorsement I meant to say.
Much appreciated. Maybe one day they'll figure out I'm helping their customer base 😁.
hello what kind of cable needs from boss od 200 midi out to boss eq 200 midi in ???
Any 3.5mm or 1/8" TRS cable will work to connect the 200 series pedals to each other
@@ManBunMetalHead thank you bro :)
When I switch memories on the pedals, they are automatically turned on. Is there a way to switch from say memory 1 to memory 2 but not have memory 2 automatically turn on? I would prefer to be able to do this with a program change if possible.
With an ES-5 I can achieve everything I want to do. Also running a Strymon Conduit and it makes running cables to any brand effects unit easy since its programable to different midi cable types.
I want to use my rc-5 loop station with 3,5 midi out as master to enslave tempo on my dd-200 delay and sy-200 synth sequencers, can I do it using just 3.5 cables?
Yep, that should work no problem
@@ManBunMetalHead do you have info on this? can't find any and I'm trying to do something similar
What would be a null preset with this pedal ? I'd like to assign it to mem #1 to emulate the pedal is turned off. So it should be the most transparent possible. Of course if it is possible to control the on/off state with MIDI it would be even better, but I didn't find it.
If you go into the settings, find the CC# for EFC (or "SW CC" for the EQ200). Sending a CC value of 0 to that number should turn off/bypass the unit and 127 to turn it on.
@@ManBunMetalHead Excellent news thank you very much !! I'll try as soon as I get the Midi cable
I'm guessing I can't use a DD-200 on a midi synth, just for the delay effects? I'm routing the midi from the synth to the pedal to my scarlett midi in, but get no signal. Synth only has midi out, no 1/4 outputs.
Yes, the MIDI connections on the DD-200 are only for MIDI control. To get the delay effect you'd need to connect to the audio inputs/outputs.
@@ManBunMetalHead Drat, I was afraid you were gonna say that. Oh well, still a great guitar pedal and synth pedal on the synth that I do have audio IO.

I have just purchased the MD 200 and wish to operate it via a midi player, i tried mid-ox to test the switch ,however did not work, I tried Controller event # 28 ,27,etc though the pedal did not respond, any ideas would be appreciated, I just want to turn the unit off and on and select the 4 memory positions only. Thanks Ken
I'd make sure you have the right MIDI cable first. Not all off the shelf 5-pin to 3.5mm MIDI cables will work with the 200 series pedals.
@@ManBunMetalHead Thanks for that I checked the wiring of the one I have, and yes the boss wiring code is different, I will make one with the right pin code Thank You for your help
@@ManBunMetalHead Hi I made a new cable now it works from midi-ox ,However when I send a values to CC#82 the first time it activates the memory switch, then I send it again and nothing , if i change the value thne it changes, and each time I want it to change I have to change the value first . Does that sound right? Thanks Ken
I've never used the memory CC, so I'm not sure if that sounds right. If you're trying to recall a memory, I'd recommend using program changes (PC) instead.
@@ManBunMetalHeadThanks again for your help, I have been able to get the memory switch working ,it does seem a little messey. Where do I fined the way to do this, and the values to send to select N-1,N-2, N-3, N-4 Thanks Ken Your help has been Great
Here's another question for you - can I use one of my 200 series pedals to split my signal into stereo? If so, how?
Nvm, they split the signal from mono to stereo on their own! Thanks again!
@@jamesnichols5998 Any pedal that has stereo outs will always split your signal into stereo if you use both channels into another stereo pedal or two amps.
Hi there! I’ve watched your vids and they have been very helpful getting me started somewhat with midi!
I wondered if you may be able to help me solve a problem I have with a few of my devices. I have a midi baby 3 which I bought to expand using midi but for the time being I’m only trying to send midi clock to my boss MD200, strymon volante and boss DD200 (they are connected in that order using custom cables made my lynx custom cables) ... I have set the middle button to be tap tempo for midi clock (or I think I have) and simply just want those there devices to synch. I have set all three to synch to midi clock but it just doesn’t seem to work :/ my volante seems to recove it for a few seconds then the tap tempo switch in the volante flashes really fast and the effect goes off and I can’t seem to get the DD200 to synch to the midi clock...
I honestly have no idea what I’m doing. I planned to sending some preset changes and/ or change the effects levels on the fly to multiple pedals but I haven’t got to that stage as I can’t even do this simple task that will make things much easier for me to synch multiple pedals to a single tap tempo :(
Is there a way to use the "tap tempo" via MIDI?
You ever found out how to do that?
@@Hirti6 nope :(
@@Pyuras me neither :/
this is all I'm looking for and can't find it! all these other functions are useless. why would I need a MIDI patch change?
if someone is going to buy all these boss pedals isnt better to buy the boss gt 1000 and save all the hustle and confusion?
probably the dumbest of questions.... does this have anything to do with playing my guitar as a midi device or is this just about controls?
No worries, just had to do with the controlling it. I have a beginners guide to MIDI if you are interested ua-cam.com/video/9HvCc3-tGx0/v-deo.html.
