Got to see Sandy perform this song in NY in 1974 and then Judy Collins perform it at Wolf Trap three decades later. It is amazing that her daughter, Georgia, is now involved in projects helping others rediscover her mother's music. Great job Blacksmith!
Yes, I had a good chat with Georgia at Cropredy this year and I am pleased to say that she is now the proud owner of our CDs! As, of course, are we proud owners of Carla’s. Thanks for your kind comment, it always warms our hearts when our efforts are appreciated!
To listen to such lyrics and realise that they were written by young people many years ago and yet they felt the inexorable flow of time as if they could view life from an entirely different perspective .
Beautiful voice, it should be turned up! Very nice all around - we love this song and Sandy Denny. Our buddy Moe Armstrong from Daddy Longlegs knew her well - only the good die young - RIP SD
Saw Beverly Craven sing this at a Swarbrick/Fairport do in Symphony Hall Bham, many years ago, it was beautiful, I even went so far as to get into touch with her management to ask if she would release her version, but they said unfortunately no such plans.
Sandy had such a powerful voice even when singly gently, mellifluous and silky smooth. The singer here has done an absolutely fantastic job, fully understanding the nuance in Sandy’s voice. Just beautiful.
wow how beautiful!!! beautiful bass intro- awesome guitar- mesmerizing mando - and could have sworn the beautiful sandy was amongst us- superb cover guys- truly authentic!!!
Wonderful. This is a song that is almost uncover able, and yet you've done a wonderful job. The band were all hearing this song when it first came out!
@BlacksmithFolk.Rock Band Beautiful rendition. You've not only captured the wistful ,airy quality that was Sandy's trademark , your natural range is even more expansive than Sandy's.
What a beautiful version of this song. The band at amazing. I've been a follower of Steeleye Span for many, many years, but Blacksmith can give Steeleye a run for their money. How about Blacksmith doing a version of All around my hat . Please come to Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire.i would love to see you all in concert . everyone in the band are fine musicians.. l look forward to hearing more. Well done. 👍🎼
Thanks so much for such a positive comment, it’s much appreciated. Yes we do sing All Around my Hat and you can find it here ua-cam.com/video/VptkJGe985s/v-deo.html Hopefully we’ll get to play in Hull sometime!!
@@blacksmithfolkrockband7280 Hello it's Martin Hall again, thank you for your reply. I've just listened to your version of All around my hat, and as i keep saying, it's just amazing. The quality and professionalism of Blacksmith is definitely on a par with Steeleye Span, Fairport Convention, Runrig and so many more I could mention. Do you have any CDs for sale ? As you can see, I am old fashion, I only have CDs and records . My favorite type of music has always been Traditional folk / folk rock / Celtic, English, Irish, Scottish. Very best wishes for the band. 👍🎼
Hi Martin, you can order the CD on our website www.blacksmithband.co.uk/merchandise.html - thanks for your interest & your kind comments - Still prefer vinyl & CD myself, the former for the artwork & the latter because I prefer to listen to music as albums rather than endless playlists! Stay well! Rick
Superb cover of this classic song which I would say is as good as the original. Everything about it is so right and Kathy's voice is remarkable. I never thought anyone could sing it as well as Sandy but I appear to be wrong.
Such a beautiful song. The best version is the first time it was recorded with the Strawbs which is on the original version of The Strawbs and Sandy Denny. It has to be the original though because subsequesnt pressings of the album included an uneccesary string accompaniment.
Martin Carthy said that the worst thing you can do to a song is never to perform it. There are times when I have doubts about that. As Richard Thompson wrote of Sandy: There's some who dare and some who shine And some who only drag behind And some who reap what others sow When memories fail, well, who's to know
Hmmm I think I'm with Martin on that one, but of course you have to stay true to the spirit of the original, which I think we've done. It goes down very well at gigs & we've introduced those who have asked to Sandy & Fairports music, not to mention Steeleye & other great bands of the era. Thanks for your observations.
Lovely version, but I've got to say I had a bad feeling as the singer looked to be struggling on those stairs. Whose idea was that, for a Sandy Denny song?
Just a combination of a long dress and an unfamiliar staircase, it wasn’t noticed at the time otherwise we’d have redone it - glad you liked the arrangement, thanks
@@jamesbutler6253 OMG we hadn't spotted that... absolutely not. We used the staircase to showcase the lovely stained glass window. We should have retaken that sequence, but somehow Kathy's falter didn't become evident at the time. The video was shot by our soundman, Derek, at my house in Winchester. I based the mandolin part around RT's guitar approach to the original. Tbh I'm a bit in shock that this has happened - maybe we can reshoot it sometime. Rick (mandolin/fiddle)
Beautiful. Captures the essence of the song amd Sandy so well
you guys are in a class all your own!!! just like miss sandy- every accompaniment distinct as you compliment each other☺️so so rare
That voice is so definitely capturing it takes you to a peaceful place

Gorgeous performance, I saw Fairport convention perform that about 50 years ago, it’s one of the most beautiful songs there is.

Sandy was a genius and my favorite singer ever. But I really do love this women's voice!
yes, this one always goes down a storm live, Kathy does a great job on it
Sandy had such a powerful voice even when singly gently, mellifluous and silky smooth. The singer here has done an absolutely fantastic job, fully understanding the nuance in Sandy’s voice.

Absolutely beautiful. Loved this song since I first heard Sandy do it on Unhalfbricking when it was first realised. This is up there.
The lyrics, the mix, the voice, and that mandolin, superb!

Well glad to see someone can sing this song with heart and give it justice. I wonder if Blackmores Night covers it..They should.
A beautiful performance of a superb song.
Nice version. Really like the voice, mandolin, and guitar interplay in the beginning.
Thank you very much!
Just heard this version of one of my favourite songs. Brilliant, restrained backing, excellent vocal. Brought tears to my eyes. Thank you.

High praise indeed! Thank you for this - much appreciated

lovely version--and dress and backdrop scenery--great visual band
Lovely.
Just fantastic I didn’t think anyone could match or surpass Sandy Denny’s version really good.
Wow, praise indeed!
Fabulous cover, THANK YOU!!!! Lead singer sounds very much like Sandy!
Thank you, she does, and that’s her natural voice
Great performance by all! Mando and vocals stand out.

Spoiled by the drums, Kate Wolf also did a delightful cover,

Right up there with my other two favorite versions by Judy Collins and of course Sandy Denny herself.

I too saw Sandy Denny sing this live. She was a fabulous singer songwriter who died far too young.
True, so many gems

The subtle melodic electric guitar playing of Richard Sinclair makes the Fairport studio version stand out to me.
She is beautiful.
Love this band

Very well done! I hope you all still play together publically.
Ps..I'm 62 and first started playing this song and pondering my life with a 12 string guitar 45 yrs ago...who knows indeed...
We do, next public gig is the Dave Swarbrick memorial concert at the Village Hall in Byfield on September 24, thanks
PS I am lead guitarist with Blacksmith.
I'm in nh in the states....
Thanks so much for making music...
If you come to states please tell me!!
We’d love to come to the States! Just waiting on the call from the label 😀
I want the bass tab, the bass is the best part
💪💪💪🇮🇹
There's no question in my mind this influenced the song "Sweet Melisa" by the Almond Brothers.
Interesting, hadn’t made that connection
Sandy Denny was like a British Janis Joplin.
I offered them an alternative "storyboard ", but got a chilly response. thx- knew they'd finally listen to someone.
Wonderful☺🥲

Fine version but some bad lip syncing in video!
Ha ha! We don’t have the budget for a Sony pictures production… one of these days 😀
@@blacksmithfolkrockband7280 Performance and Music... still GREAT!
Why did you use the staircase?
Did you mean to allude to how Sandy Denny died?
That is what I was going to write too.

Nice cover! But the best rendition of this beautiful song was performed by Eva Cassidy. Plain truth.
The instrumental arrangement is excellent - vocals are good but not in the class of Sandy Denny. Still, a pretty good effort to a great song
The mix buries her voice.
@@rossclark9155 Really? we tried to be careful to feature Kathy's voice & I thought we'd achieved that!
I thought your awkward walking down the stairs was dark.
see my response below - absolutely unintended. A combination of a long dress and unfamiliarity with the setting.
