It is an incredibly rare gift for a singer to take a song we've heard sung by so many others for so many years, and sing it as if we'd never heard it before--to take those same words and music and reach down inside of us and touch our very souls. Eva Cassidy did that with this and so many other songs. She was incredibly rare; her talent a gift from God.
What a voice. But it's not just the voice. It's the varied colors and textures and dynamics that set Eva apart from every other singer in music history. She never sat behind a golden microphone in a world-class studio. She never even got a contract. She was a nobody working clubs and weddings. And she was simply the most complete singer who ever lived. There is no other singer with such a varied song list. No one. Just Eva.
Sadness has been my constant companion through life. I did not choose her, she chose me, and now fast approaching the second half of my life I just want to shake these shackles off and walk into the light.
A month ago I was traveling from north dakota to the west coast when this popped up on my YT.I thought of my young grandaughters, and time gone by. I had to turn my face to shield my tears.
This always makes me remember the wild geese that used to practice formation flying above my land in Idaho in anticipation of the coming migration. Most people think that they just fly away one day. They don't. They practice for weeks and often it is very funny as they get lost or fail to fly in formation or straggle. Then one day you see them flying with intent and determination with the young ones in the lead and you know that now it is for real and they go.
"Now the warriors of winter they gave a cold triumphant shout And all that stays is dying and all that lives is getting out See the geese in chevron flight flapping and racing on before the snow They've got the urge for going and they've got the wings so they can go They get the urge for going When the meadow grass is turning brown Summertime is falling down and winter is closing in"
Interesting observation about the geese. One wonders if Joni Mitchell (in the quoted excerpt above from Urge For Going) was channeling Rachel Field’s “Something told the wild geese It was time to go. Though the fields lay golden Something whispered ‘Snow.’ ...Summer was on their wings Winter in their cry.”

I have heard plenty of versions of this song but this one makes me feel quite emotional, perhaps it is because Eva puts her heart and soul into the performance, R.I.P. Eva ,
Who knows how she did it, but, in almost all instances, Eva instinctively knew how to arrange and perform a song to bring out its absolute ultimate meanings and expression. The ensuring sadness is that most of her performances went unrecorded, unarchived. They're not saved. No tape. No records. No video. Makes what we have all the more precious.
Wayne Sanchez I believe I hear differences in the lyrical interpretations of Sandy Denny, Judy Collins, et al who have covered the song and Eva Cassidy. Honest question: What do you believe is the "ultimate meaning" here interpreted by Eva?

Real, raw and sung so honestly. Love her...always
every time I hear her voice I have to weep buckets , thank you Eva Cassidy
Ive listened in depth to many of the great female singers .and i feel eva is prob the most beautifully gifted of them all just tone power meaning feeling she is amazing gone far to soon we're the lucky ones to still have her voice r.i.p nightbird
Eva is a natural singer-arranger-interpreter
of songs.
A beautiful soul , pass to young
I have heard plenty of versions of this song but this one makes me feel quite emotional, perhaps it is because Eva puts her heart and soul into the performance, R.I.P. Eva ,
I fell in love with this song listening to Fairport Convention as a youngster. Listening over half a century later to Eva.
Yeah! Who knows where the time goes?
The most prolific voice I have ever heard..She is truly a songbird with a angelic voice.
Such a beautiful soul. Why do they leave us ? My heart crys ...
This song is very beautiful. It reminds me of another old favorite Sweet Melissa by the Allman brothers
I miss Eva so much.
Had never heard this song before till Firefly Lane. Eva was my favorite vocalist of all time ... this song is beautiful!
A great singer, gone before her time, but at least she was not corrupted by the generic and trashy big money record labels. RIPx
Most definitely that. Pure at heart
So rare in these days of the commercialization of anything & everything that can huck a buck
A great guitar player as well.
Such TIMELESS treasure she left for us all.. the most valuable inheritance 🎶🎤🎸🦋🌻🌿🌼 Thank you Thank you Eva Cassidy 💟💟💟💟💟💟
It's unbelievable that Eva's vocal range is mezzo to soprano, yet she sounds so gentle and lovely
I will never be able to hear Eva and not get very teary-eyed. So damned unfair.
Yes... my daughter has had advanced melanoma since age 25; now 32 and stage four. It is NOT fair.
A wonderful interpretation of a wonderful song.
Chissà dove va il tempo adesso che non ci sei più. Oggi 22 settembre 2023 manchi sempre più. CIAO EVA MY ANGEL...
I have no words to suffice, but now we know how God spent the 7th day. You are LOVED Eva!!
Amazing singer! Beautiful voice 🌷🌷🌷
Imagine the great music that lay ahead for us all
Best version of this song I've ever heard. ❤️
I SO AGREE💟🦋🌻🎶 Sad to see her Go, but forever grateful for the timeless treasures she left for us #forevergrateful
Another awesome version is Loudon wainwright Jr and Brandi Carlisle duet
