There's something I don't see other people do that was one of the first things I learned years back and I fully forgot after years away from the sport.
When you're on a longboard and the breaks are powerful and struggling to duck dive, instead of grabbing the rails to get the nose down, just grab the nose and force that down and forget about everything else for a second. You won't get through as cleanly as a good duck dive but you won't get tumbled back up the beach like I did all day yesterday until I remembered that.
Yes! Amazing paddle out tips. These are things that have taken me years to learn on my own. Thanks for the amazing info.
No worries at all! Hope they're useful! Yewww!
Using the rip current has been a HUGE help for my improvement

Thanks so much!!! Really really appreciate it!
Thanks Ben. Turtle roll and especially longboard duck five would be great to get tips on.
No worries at all!
Okay perfect I’ll definitely schedule those in for upcoming edits, thanks for that, yewww!!
On turtle roll i like to pull the nose under a bit to let Whitewater pass bye, elbows bent n arm's hold bord solid, flip over n get get back on n paddle quik to channel.
🙌👏
Thank you
No worries at all!!! 🙏🤙
The safety of others in the lineup is crucial. If you are going to paddle out you better be ready to take an extra thumping if that means preventing other from dangerous situations that you we be the cause of.
This might happen when you are paddling out and there are other surfers outside of you catching waves if you are in there surf lane you might have to paddle deeper in front of the whitewater and take a harder section of the wave on the head in order to not block their wave and potentially act as a human road coan made of floating lead. Or the other way around you might have somebody right in your line while riding a wave and you have to cut back and completely loose the face of a wave in order to keep from running that person over. On a crowded day every single person can have 100% good intentions and still there are situations where thing go wrong.
I hate, hate, hate getting in confrontations in the water, I can fight but I'm not a fighter I'm a surfer. I'll let a cook get away with dropping in on me oncebor twice 10 to 1 before tolerating dangerous situation where other guy are making bad or more likley inexperienced calls and causing or even potentially causing accidents.
Also keep in mind if you have a 9 1/2 foot long board and the same-ish length leash, a leash can stretch out to almost double its length so you have close to a 25 or 30 feet betwee you and the beach that can be a potential hazard. Bottom line never paddle out directly behind someone and never bail you're bored with someone directly behind you even if that means taking a harder thumping than you otherwise would.
Thank you so much !!
My pleasure !!! Thanks so much for the great question!! If there’s anything else you’d like to know just let me know, yewww!!
Thanks for the tips! Visual example would help though
I call your up & over, The Cowboy. Horse rears up, you move your weight toward the horses head. The only disadvantage to the cowboy is potential for rash on the inside of the thigh as you launch yourself up towards the nose. (I trunk it due to 86f/30c water 😂)
So what to do when a massive set is heading your way and your caught in the impact zone?
Really good, informative video. thanks!
great thanks good points but I always wonder what I have to do if there is somebody behind me? Holding on to your board sounds easy but how can I do that without hurting myself. How would you clinch to your board in such a situation, if the wave is just too big for a turtle roll and a chicken dive would endanger other people in the water?
Usually if a wave is too big to hold on to a longboard turtling than you’re on the wrong board to begin with.
Though you never ditch your board regardless of any situation. Even if you hurt yourself you hold on to it. If you choose to hurt others over your self you’re a asshole.
I am just a beginner but stupid enough to go in bigger waves... when i freak out and turtle rolls don't work, i grab the leash just behind the tail and lower myself into the water. As you feel the wave rolling over you, give the leash a little yank so you stay pretty much stationary and not dragged towards the shoreline. Don't do this when people are too close behind you.. if so stick with the board and eat the misery sanwich yourself !
For now i've been using this with an 8' in about 1.8m waves or about 6ft.
I was a skater when i was younger so balance isn't hard for me after popping up. If you have difficulties popping up or balance, don't go into big waves yet. Keep trying the smaller ones.
What about hugging the board by the nose and holding the nose down with the other hand? I was told to do this by another very good longboarder but never see anyone talk about it.
How big of a wave can I take with a longboard like 7"
With turtle rolling, what about if the wave is about to break? I tried to turtle roll today and my board just got swooped up and taken with the wave as it was breaking and I ended up getting carried back 20ft. How do I prevent myself from getting taken with the wave as I turtle roll? Thanks!
Hey Joss! That's a tricky one, there are a couple of exceptions - if the wave is too big then we may not be able to turtle roll it unfortunately as there's too much power and we can't hold the board. And the same is for times when the wave breaks on us, its more powerful at this point and so harder to hold onto. Some things you can try is hold the board closer to the nose when you're turtle rolling and you will have a bit more control, but otherwise it may be a call for a duckdive or ditching the board (safely, with a legrope and noone behind you). i know not perfect options but sometimes the ocean places us in tricky situations hey! haha
I hope thats able to help! If you did have any further questions at all or wanted more depth/clarity on anything please don't hesitate to message - email is longboardcoaching@outlook.com if you did :) , yewww cheers joss!
At some point you have to "go beyond your experience level" or you will never advance.
