This paddle out on these big days are truly a test lol! Although i timed it completely wrong proud to say i did not slow pace entire time, did not fail and go in cave, and eventually made it out to finish a 3 hr session, id broken my board and swam in got another board and this was second paddle out 😂 yahoo!!
This was, in truth, so much more interesting than many videos of people surfing -the kind of videos where it starts w/someone a second or 2 before they stand up, and there is generic loud pounding music, and some people making generic loud pointless commentary. This was beautiful too - the sound and colours of the water and sky, seeing the surfer being swept back and forth by the power of the waves. An almost endless struggle. The strength and commitment that this must require is almost more telling than the minute standing on the board. Very interesting.
Most people posting videos on UA-cam think that using a Video Editor makes them movie directors. They make the big mistake of adding their favorite music to dozens of perfect surf rides. In the end, these videos become more like cheap surf commercials.
Totally agree. If you surf you know that it's these times, when your having to paddle through wave after wave, that you, your fitness and your water knowledge are tested.
absolutely. dude is a machine. he easily navigates and paddles through this potential near death situation with stunning levels of fitness and calmness. really impressive. he is indeed a world class athlete.
@@handkantenronny1716 You are absolutely right. He is cool under pressure I would've crapped myself and paddled in. Funny thing is I think he was carrying a " Go Pro " in his mouth aswel, aha
Glad it’s just not me 😂. At ulus I found it’s just easier to just paddle straight and let it drag me to the right (almost get trashed half way into thomas beach ). Then on the outside it drags you back to ulus .
right, I have a whole new level of RESPECT for Nathan going back out 2x & doing that until session success !! I was out of energy near half way just from watching. MAde me feel all of my age. But I stayed till the end.....had to right ??
My hat is off to Nate. His stamina and endurance is amazing! He looked really tired at the end,but he pushed threw like the big wave charger that he is and actually made it look easy especially with that current screaming down the beach. Haven't surfed in months and this just brought me right back. As fun as riding waves is, this is equally a satisfying part of surfing for me. The mental challenge and physically demanding nature of surfing on big days is what brings so much satisfaction to each wave. Putting in work like this and then finally catching a wave is what creates the dopamine rush and adrenaline that come with each successful wave. Thanks for sharing this raw footage, pleasure to watch.
Bigger waves can be such a pain in the arse, and you can end up getting nowhere (especially with huge beachies, where there's no channel out, or the rip isn't easy to manoeuvre. But for any non-surfers watching this demonstrates why most surfers have such a great physique.... it's damn hard work sometimes.

A testament to just how good Nate's content truly is, as I watched the whole thing. A guy paddling. Not even one wave. Well done dude. You rock. Wrong way to do big Ulu's, but any who have done it soon learn. (Hence the vid title, I suppose?)
I never paddled out at Uluwatu but to me this was not a timing issue. I wrote this comment on Notepad before I knew who it was, but please tell me if I am wrong here, it's super weird to me that a famous guy can do this. 30 seconds of studying the currents show you that the water is pouring in off the cliffs on the left, sliding right, and then obviously must go out in a rip on the right (of of field of view). He paddles *against* the rightways current all the way left to the cliffs then out *against* the incoming current then back again with the rightways current and after 4 minutes he is a 1 minute paddle farther out than where he started from. After that at 4:24 you can see someone taking the easy ride in the rip I expect he would have been in if he had just paddled facing the horizon and let the current take him. A 2nd person again resting in the rip at 5:06. At 5:18 the rip is clearly demarcated. I don't know if there are rocks to avoid on the right (we never see in the shot) but even if there are I would expect the rip must pick you up before you get into them because of the huge volume of water needing to return to sea hitting those rocks and turning seaward. I'm not writing this to be clever. I'm writing because I'm sincerely confused by his comment saying he got the timing wrong. That first 4 minute paddle to nowhere and back (super impressive physically as it was) would have buggered any timing up anyway. Just super curious.
@@greatbriton8425 when you go out at ulus you enter the water through a cave and there is no beaches, only rock faces so you need to go left and out straight away, if you try to go right you just get smashed back into the rocks and cliffs

First time I surfed Uluwatu was BIG. I did not look and wait for the true sets so I was frothing after getting off the plane and paddled out with zero local knowledge here😳 Anyway, I made it out paddling very wide straight to the Outside corner. Then the real sets came.Hollow and powerful. I just made it under the lip of each wave in this mega set and as I duckdived I counted 7 seconds underwater before busting through the back of the wave 🌊 and was almost sucked over the falls backwards on the last wave in this set. I started paddling in and didn't even bother sitting out there. It was big. An Indo on a jet ski rode up from Padang and with some assistance i managed to get to the cave entrance and I actually kissed the wall of the cave once I felt safe. I was truly humbled. Uluwatu......you WON !

Here in South Korea, today got a big swell of the year, I tried to paddle out for 30 minutes but failed and came home sullen. You are my motivation. thank you
I'd say you have to time it, and read the water, but it's just relentlessly consistent and that current is wicked! Took all that hammering and with a GoPro (it appears) in his mouth!!! Bravo!
Nathan this has inspired me to get fitter and healthier. Not just saying that. I let myself turn into a lazy mal rider with a beer gut lmao. Seeing you pull off this paddle out without stopping is truly inspirational 😂🤙🏼
Been there done that. Worst surf day I've had in my life, got dragged what seems like forever to the right of screen, constant duck diving, finally made it out the back, caught one wave, saw the cave and went in. I was exhausted, had a bit of flu too which didn't help. High tide, big waves is a true challenge out there. That was 30 years ago.
i dont surf but i was a kayaking guide for a number of years and i've got a lot of experience paddling into breaking waves, scooping up kids from the surf zone, dropping down big waves on a touring kayak [as fun as it looks] etc. surely you could head to lookers right and paddle out where everyone else seems to be paddling out?? you're just charging right down the fall line and you could have probably made it easier on yourself going around to where the waves aren't building to that degree or where it's deeper and they're not breaking at all. on your left, yeah it's a cliff. on the right i bet it's a breeze compared to charing right down the middle where the reef is the shallowest. cheers and stay safe. a few mouths full of water or a bad cramp in a bad spot and you're really playing with fire here.
Having dived, but not surfed in Indo, I can say that the currents are nuts, can remember an epic drift in the Gili's where on the tidal change we went one way, and then came back up to 5m and went back to where we started

Reminds me of getting caught in the washing machine inside maxed out Big Haleiwa. There you just get pounded and slammed by solid walls of whitewater over a shallow reef. No mercy. Haven't surfed there but it looked like he paddled 100yds parallel to the shore against the current before heading out to the lineup and eventually ended up around the same area if he had just paddled straight out. Can't tell if maybe he did it because of the reef ... you can't see (appears to be high tide)? ... definitely looked like he took the scenic route.
Congratulations 🎉

Glad to find I'm not the only one who struggles to get out beyond the surf
What a machine!! I see that his cross fit training pays off in times like these!! Great video’s Nathan, keep them coming!!
That was insane! Do you do any workouts to improve your paddle fitness outside of the water? I've had to take a nap just from watching that!
I do, on link in bio my onlyfans is a lessons channel lol
@@NathanFlorence 😂 slide in some foot pics bro
@@lesss4067 lol!
@@NathanFlorence I'm no surfer but I can appreciate the slog! Beautifully relaxing to watch, I cannot imagine the level of fitness it takes to do.

Love the paddle out videos! No one dose that. Keep up the good work Nathan 👏
13 minutes in and my arms exhausted for you lol much respect for the level of consistency

Riveted. It was like watching Rudy. I even double tapped at one point then had to double back tap just in case I missed anything. Never stop posting unedited long shots!
Strength and endurance is superb
Watch all your work out vid thanks for sharing
For anyone that thinks surfers aren't top tier athletes, just have a look at this video. Great work Nate

just the shear fact that you made that WITH A GOPRO IN YOUR MOUTH is crazy
He didn't miss a beat with his paddling. Most of us guys would have given up 10 minutes ago! Good job Nate!
I would of given up a long time ago.Really admire that kind of determination.
Once he got swept past the cave, giving up is not an option, You'd get bashed against the shoreline cliff if you came in.
i would've given up at the parking lot
Casi me rindo de verlo en UA-cam
I’m halfway in and my shoulders are burning just watching this. Your level of fitness is insane
Dude, I would love to workout with Nathan. This dude is definitely Doing Something Right in his trainings. Here in Florida all we know is paddle hard!
I bet with those hurricane swells! Low interval and a hundred waves! Imagine the paddle outs are brutal!
@@NathanFlorence The Great Lakes are short period and constant as well when it gets bigger for us 😎
Your fit Nate, that was savage!
Hurricane swells..........
Why you say that?
Exactly! Hurricane Sandy was the last one to really separate
the boys from the pros! 😂
Impressive Nate. You don't see the real hard work of paddling before catching a waves. Real deal content.

A heavy commitment just paddling out. Impressive fitness
Great job to make on this day! Amazing paddle out man!
Insane stamina! 💪
yea man good workout and humbling. why he didn't paddle out to the right across racetrack and circle left but kept fighting against the current will remain a mystery 🙃
Hats off to you nate charging the surf...what a workout that must have been for you...well heres to better conditions and epic surf sessions in the future!!!
I remember my second time surfing at ulus. First day i got a nice wave as a total beginner figured i had cracked the code. Went out the very next day in pumping conditions, i took a couple of strokes out the cave and quickly ended up at the next beach which had my name on it 😅 That was scary.

Happens to all of us who paid out dues at Ulus. Those caves are so scary especially on a rising big swell and rising tide
Tomas beach 🤣🤣🤣
Thomas Beach is the first "safe" bailout. Good news is, with that current, you get there very fast.
the commentary in the background is also pretty cool. no one's talking themselves up, but just how they gave it a go on a macking day where i'd just be sitting under an umbrella up top taking pictures and pounding Bintangs.... 👍😎🤙
Nate you’re the freaking man that paddle out there was a consistent one take it as a good work 💯🔥

Paddling demonstrated some fitness but the duck dives looked kind of shallow? Like ass high in air? Is that just from riding a bigger board due to the size?
I would have packed my bags and got on the first flight out…
😂😂😂
and I would have been on the next flight after you
This is the best surf video I have seen this year! Respect for keeping it real!
While this may have been absolutely miserable for you, I’m in my bed having a great time watching you suffer. Thanks for the entertainment once again. It’s rare seeing pro surfers show this side of the sport

Am I too stoned right now or was that the most mental fucked up paddle out ever
Legend had it he's still paddling out to this day
I just went straight forward and let the current sweep me to the right. Then all the way around at a slow pace. Problem when its bigger, you might want a bigger board, but its harder to duck-dive. Get back soon before dark, you could be missing the entry of cave depending on the current. Then you need get out at Padang Padang in the dark.
Thumbs up!

That was brutal to watch. Reminded me of the little engine that could. Just kept chugging.
I thought right at the start it was the uluwatu's channel I thought that looks like Nathan then I was ok he came out the cave then where in the hell is he going. Boy you got your work out in and the wife would have been proud. How many stories Nate have we heard about big Uluwatu and the paddle well you got to live it. Stay safe my friend!

First time I surfed Uluwatu was BIG.
I did not look and wait for the true sets so I was frothing after getting off the plane and paddled out with zero local knowledge here😳
Anyway, I made it out paddling very wide straight to the Outside corner.
Then the real sets came.Hollow and
powerful.
Good to see ppl post the bads along w/the goods.. to show it’s not all gravy 🤙🏽
Bro i think you can only get to this level of endurance by surfing giant wave for every day since you we’re a kid. This is not something the gym can make you do.. crazy

Absolute beast! Elite Level Cardio 10/10 👑
The average surfer wouldn't have made it out ! Seriously heavy currents require stamina ! I'm too old for that ! I'll stick with the little 3' waves that break in the Gulf of Mexico ! You can usually just walk out !
Holy crap, i was mind blown watching this, but after Reading nathans comment i was just crapped out my mind, so impressive!

Thanks for the paddle video, they are hard to find. Good job getting into the channel. My local spot can be a difficult paddle. I loved watching the surfing final in the 2020 Olympics because it showed the negotiation of rough water. Thanks

I think you gamble to make your way to Temples. I usually paddle out diagonally right from the cave, trying to use the current energy to take me out. Once I am outside, is just a long paddle to the spots at Ulus.
Yes. And if you paddle way outside, the current goes the other way.
I took a 2 advertisement hold-down waiting for you to make it out! Heavy.
Impressive Nathan. And if you miss the cave as your exit, your screwed and have to paddle back around again. As I watched many do last week.
You are a paddling beast so it just shows knowledge and timing is everything when it’s big and the currents pushing

Here in South Korea, today got a big swell of the year, I tried to paddle out for 30 minutes but failed and came home sullen. You are my motivation. thank you
Why did you paddle to the left first before getting pulled all the way to the right?
Holy shit! I'm exhausted just from watching this! Bravo, Nate!
Thanks for sharing this! For me as a recreational surfer paddle outs at beach breaks mean so much, its all about mentality and perseverance
What really impresses me is that apart from the evident level of resistance NF has, he is holding his GoPro with his mouth all the time.
And without even looking tired. Like a paddling man machine
Haha! Get it brother!! Get that engine up and running again! Paddle for days!
Same here! Watching that makes me motivated to up my game!
11:50 audio got me in tears 😂
Guy rocking up with a 5'8 on a day like this... Really shows you what kind of crowd this place attracts.
My shoulders started aching at the 10min mark………..and I’m in a chair! Legend Nath👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽
Great to see... Would have been nice to see you get a wave at the end man..that's making me think twice about paddle out there
Dude! I am so out of shape, I got gassed watching you... Great job and solid pace!
Having dived, but not surfed in Indo, I can say that the currents are nuts, can remember an epic drift in the Gili's where on the tidal change we went one way, and then came back up to 5m and went back to where we started
OMG!! Serious props to Nathan here!! Superhuman!!

Yep yep yep .. my first ever paddle out here i got sucked around the corner right up against the cliff took me 40min of none stop paddling to get out the back... totally dehydrated by the time i got my first wave.. people dont realise its damn hot here so its not just the paddle its the heat that kills ya
Congratulations 🎉

Reminds me of getting caught in the washing machine inside maxed out Big Haleiwa. There you just get pounded and slammed by solid walls of whitewater over a shallow reef. No mercy. If you eventually make it outside, the rip current is so strong that you have to constantly paddle just to stay in the lineup…
haha oh man. Tried to sneak straight out to the point and ended up having to go around. We'll all been there thinking "dang it, I should have just jumped in way down the point and done the long paddle once I'm outside". You're a beast brother.
Haha so hectic, was in a rush too cause it was mid session and i was going back out! Brutal!
I lost track if I was rooting for him or against him, but what a beast. I wouldn't have lasted a quarter that time.
