WHAT QUESTIONS DO YOU HAVE ABOUT THE BIG DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION COMPANIES LIKE TUNECORE, CDBABY, & SONGTRUST? Let me know so I can address these questions in my next video! :)
A break down of how cd baby, tooncore, distrokid etc all differ! This video was very helpful in simplifying the terminology in the industry. Thank you!
@@johnnytsunami7150 I've actually been thinking about doing a video like this for a while now, but I feel like there's already many out there talking about this! Have you watched any of the other videos? Were there things missing that you wanted to know?
Great videos!!! Thank you 😊 🙌🏾 I’m thinking of leaving cdbaby but I don’t want to lose all the views and comments from the UA-cam videos they put of mine. Can I just put my new music on tunecore or distrokid (depending on which one I end up choosing if I can)
Tynia Coats I guess what I’m saying is can I use both cd baby and another distributor at the same time for different songs/albums. I hope hat made sense 😬
Some clarity needs to be said in regards to this video. When we are talking about a "producer", we are NOT talking about someone who just "records the song / instrumental". In the context that NOT being said in the video, a producer has to have SOME of the creative involvement such as adding a melody line or extra bass line for example using the digital audio workstation (DAW) software... There are many songwriters who also act on their own as producers. Many producers are simply working in a recording engineer role in a recording studio. They record the song or instrumental as intended by the songwriter. Adding reverb, setting volume levels and mixing down tracks as normally done during recording of the song or instrumental, and as such doing that alone DOES NOT give a producer rights to royalties. This video implies that, and that is the wrong information to be disseminating to other new folks out here.
TYNIIIIIA - you are my hero sistah - i really needed this breakdown i'm w BMI and the 100% 200% was so confusing to me andNOW I KNOW its bcz of BMI rules its 2000% thank you soooo much for this - i'm fiinally getting to really understand this stuff and ive been doing it for 20 years!
6:54 it baffles me how it seemingly needs 11 (or more) songwriters to make a track. Crazy. However if it is simply a substitute for paying a wage or a fee for an individual musician (i.e. a flat rate versus a share or potential revenue) then that does sound quite an attractive business model, based on incentivisation.
I'm impressed..euphoric delivery! (Super Important) Just 1 ? - Where Ya Goin So Fast? You Could Get It All If You Walk Down That HILL!! I KNOW..and I Love Music..
Thank you for acknowledging how producers who sells a beat to someone should still receive royalties. People really buys beats online and don’t pay royalties back to the producers
Unfortunatley according to the Copyright Act that is not the case, Every beatmaker or person that makes a beat is not a producer and every producer does not make beats. Copyright is a combination of lyrics and melody. Drum patterns and loops are not copyrightable. Most beatmakers are not actively involved in the production of the song.compilation. The ones that are involved are mainly producers thus a percentage in the royalties. That is why a actual song is valuable and when its in a fixed form two copyrights exist albeit limitations for the sound recording in some instances. This is not a knock against anyone making beats as most havent went far enough to learn that lesson.
@ you stating I’m wrong doesn’t make you correct. Before you comment back you should state the purpose of the A.M.P. ACT. I’d provide actual case law if you would be honest enough to send a donation. Otherwise you’re more than welcome to substantiate your “claim”

This video is so valuable to those who needs to know how they are to monetize with their music! I speak to countless writers out there who kept wondering why they never got paid for their music that has been played in various mediums, well Thanks to you they do now!
Greetings from Canada! Thank you Tynia, you have enlightened me with all your information. After watching a few of your videos, you have answered so many questions I had, as a songwriter/producer and where to go from here. I am with Socan, here in Canada but needed an American company. BMI sounds like a good company!
How does an artist ensure we have administration rates so they can move forward with a sync placement for TV commercial or film if a producer has some recording and songwriting percentages. FaceTime typical industry standards to producers always get a percentage of the song writing even if the artist wrote the lyrics the vocal melody and the initial cords but the producer then takes those cords in lyrics and melody of the report and creates the arrangement the beat and instrumentation
This is the second video I've watched, and I really like your content. It certainly gives me a greater understanding of what I'm getting myself into. Thanks for sharing
5:15 what about producers who find the rhythm, has band mates who add to the idea on hand, fro vocals or instrumentation. Not only that I might of written verses or add bit myself to the project this all within the recording bit which I also do the sound capturing on my equipment & from there I end up doing the Arrangements, mixing mastering. Any advice?? Thank you for your time.
Wow the universe!!? I'm putting that on a mug or t-shirt then haha just kidding. That means so much to me though that the information is resonating with you!
Thanks for the info. I have a question regarding the performer (artist) in BMI case. Let's say my friend and me wrote a song (I was composer and arranger and my friend helped with the arrangement). For the recording, we asked his sister to record the vocals (she is the artist/performer). In BMI (without a publisher), how do we split percentages? In my country, we don't enter percentage for performer in the submission because performing rights are subject to another regulations. We enter only creators (author of the lyrics, composser for melody and the arranger for the harmony). The percentages are split by the regulations: composer gets the most, than the arranger and then the author it the lyrics. As you can see, it's oriented more towards the music creation.
I would love to see a breakdown of the CDBaby-type publisher/administrators. Do they get half the royalties? Also, since PRO's are for mostly radio, what are the split arrangements for mechanical royalties like streaming services or CD sales?
I played on a sample Kanye used in “All Day Nigger” and because I was one of those old skool musician who went to the studio and knew nothing about publishing nor copywriting (music done 30+ years) None of the musicians got nothing
Let's say you are buying a beat with exclusive rights off beatstars or another website from a total stranger and it says 50% publishing share. If you wrote the lyrics solely by yourself, what does the 50% publishing share allude to as far as the producer collecting royalties?
Thank you for clearing all of this up for me as far as writers, publishers , ect...You're the first that have explained it this good to me....I always like watching your channel

Am in the uk I’m with bmi but I’m considering changing to prs uk company I tried to phone bmi cause off different country the time to phone is complex I’m finding this hard cause I need to sort out publishing rites to my song
At 5:45 shes only half correct here - you can pay for a beat in total which is an agreed walkway amount from that producer - what shes talking about is leasing a beat from a beat maker but you do have the option to offer the beat maker a one time payment then YOU own the beat YOU Copyright it under you and you only .
That happened to me, my producer(beat maker) registered our songs but only registered his name and not mine. He registered as the writer and publisher. So I don't know what to do
Soundexchange has been giving me the run around and requesting I register now for a 2nd time as if the 1st time wasn't already time consuming enough to begin with while the rude staff I speak with on a regular basis always end up robotically repeating the same information over and over again like broken records (as if I hadn't heard them the first ten thousand times) with them being unable and unwilling to help me whatsoever. I am both the rights owner 100% and the artist 100% in all my songs with all my songs registered with the U.S. Copyright Office which go as far back as the 80's but apparently discrimination runs deeper in the State of Washington and throughout the south with Soundexchange as the poster child for it and all the unneccessary evil that dates back to the 1800's which use to come in the color black which today all comes down to the color brown with Soundexchange's inability and unwillingness to actually help songwriters/artists like myself to get registered just because of the color of our skin. So much for equal rights and opportunities in the year 2021 and beyond fellas!
Can you explain what is meant by these 1. What is my royalty? 2. What is my publishing interest? 3. What is the rate of my publishing? I think I know what 2 means as I am guessing it's just share but the others confuse me as everyone uses different words.
