    Super trooper actually has the distinction of being the first live action gi joe commercial (not kids playing with action figures, an actual actor running around in costume getting shot at etc). He kicks the shit out of like 5 iron grenadiers.

    Have to confess, as a kid, I never made the connection between Super Trooper and Captain America. He was just a cool figure with a machine gun and shield.

    I think yeah, he is part of the GI Joe team.
    Just because he wasn't part of the media onslaught, doesn't mean he isn't part of the team.
    After all he is a toy and as kids we never had all the toys, any and all GI Joe figures were part of the team. Having them appear in the comic or cartoon was just a cool bonus.
    So in my opinion he is part of the team.
    A very reflecting part of the team.
    A part of the team that's very effective against laser weaponry. And his file card hints at the possibility that he might be the PR section of the team.
    A friendly ( and very shiny) face for the public.

    I'm so grateful you did this review. It's one of those figures I thought I imagined. I was 8, so the anticipation of getting him, just re-reading the mini-comics from the toys, I loved getting him. His vest broke apart quickly and his helmet wouldn't stay on, so my dad super-glued them on. Then the stock market crashed :(

    CHROME!!!!!! You just can't say no to that easily. That's why I put my chrome figures on a shelf. I can imagine Super Trooper being useful, his chrome parts could be made out of the laser proof material Sky Patrol vehicles were made of, although some arm and leg protection would help. And the enemies would be going WTF once he jumps into the battle field, and I can only imagine a trumpet orchestra playing when he's there. Nice review as usual.

    A special review for a really interesting story in my history of collecting GI Joe figures. So in 1988 I remember the certificates and mini-comic strip for the figure and was eager to do the mail-away but we didnt do it after the Sgt. Slaughter debacle (Due to the flood of orders it took us nearly a year to get the figure!) so all I had was the certificate and a dream. But in the era when stuff vanished never to be seen again it wasn't until the dawn of the ebay era that Super trooper was my first ebay purchase! And on my desk there is always an Iron Grenadier ready to clobber him from behind!

  • @ericsonofjames4573
    @ericsonofjames4573 5 років тому +4

    I never thought of him as a Captain America knockoff. I thought they were ripping off Robocop, which was popular at that time. (Because of the chrome. I know he wasn’t a cyborg. But maybe Hasbro was able to realize that dream when they made Robo-Joe a few years later)

    That was a great review. Super Trooper would fit in just fine in out playverse. We didn't have Super Trooper. We really didn't play g.i. joe we just played action figures. we found places for A team, gloob, Star Wars, Star Trek, Lanard, Visionaries, voltron, DnD, Lanard, Battle star galctica, Mork, Diamonds Commando, battle beasts, adventure people, Bronze bombers, secret wars, pretty much whatever we had found its way into our playverse.

    With that big shield, he would always be up front and leading the charge, first in through the door. the bright shield taking attention away from the Joe's following behind him. He would fit in nice with Shockwave or the DEF sub team, like a SWAT or Riot cop. The name comes from how he acts. Always up front and first in. Well, that's how I would use him in a story.

  • @elnatxoserra

    I think it does not fit badly in the gijoe team, the shield was a complement that in those days only had figures like Crystall Ball, (until the appearance of Viper alley),
    The defense shield is a weapon that is used by many security bodies around the world is very useful in the assault on buildings an d the urban warfare.
    The problem is that the file card does not appear any reference to this character is specialized in the assault on buildings or similar, does not explain the characteristics of the shield itself as they exist for different shooting powers.
    .....however, I really like the design of the shield and it is very cool
    Congratulations for your channel, I was a fan of the gijoe in my childhood and I am remembering and also discovering many figures and vehicles. A warm greeting from Spain.

    Anyone see that movie "Men Who Stare At Goats"?
    In my Joe-verse, Super Trooper is a product of the "Psychic Soldier" experiments conducted by the U.S. Military, hence all the reflective metallic (ie "tin foil") gear. That's what the "secret school" was. Crystal Ball messing up your soldiers? Send in Super Trooper! Need to "remote locate" a seclusive Cobra agent? Call in Super Trooper! Got a bunch of civilians who saw a whole lot of CLASSIFIED shit? Call in "Public Relations" Super Trooper!
    big fan of your channel. have a good one :)

    You know, some of that live action commercial is actually cool. Such as crashing through the skylight and how the camera follows behind him as he uses a Cobra soldier as a battering ram through the wall.

    • @JB0071051982
      @JB0071051982 5 років тому +3

      I still remember that commercial, him fighting all of the Iron Grenadiers( Destro's personal troops) in live action was impressive to my six year old self. As goofy as he looks, I cannot fault him to much since prior to 2008 (when Hasbro offered Doc in the 25th anniversary style) he was only mail in action figure that I owned as a kid. Yes, his chromed accessories was a big part of why I enjoyed him as a kid. Don't really have a use for him now, like HCC 788 I prefer the more realistic G.I. Joe action figures with real world military colors and skills that make sense.
      PS: I picked up a SkyPatrol Skyhawk to display him in, since the salesperson at the comic book store recommended it, and I wanted a vintage Skyhawk for my collection since I lost my original a long time ago.

    So, here is my spot for Super Trooper in my joeverse:
    I imagine the "order 66" from G.I.Joe2 going down and he, along with Starduster, 5 variants of the Steel Brigade, and Fridge are somehow banded together going into hiding from the Dreadnoks (who we didn't really see in the movie). They come across a Top Secret base with the Battle Force 2000 gear and weapons, being given to our 5 variants, who have finally earned their spot on the Joe team. The others get prototypes of the Sky patrol vehicles to use. This could also explain Super Troopers gear, being a prototype for Sky Patrol. From there, who knows? I haven't thought that far ahead. Maybe all the Sub Teams were out on missions, then band together to form a new Joe team? We'll, I'll be up the next 2 days I have off dreaming this onto paper! Thanks for the headache Hoodie Coco! And thank you for the review my friend! Loved it! Have an awesome day!

    Maybe it's an exercise in mental association, but I wonder if the Super Trooper's designers or someone else at Hasbro was a fan of the 1987 film _The Running Man_. At one point in the film, a character called Captain Freedom, played by Jesse Ventura, is urged out of retirement: Arnold Schwarzenegger's Richards is winning the fixed and murderous TV game show. Captain Freedom is given a new costume to show that he's better than ever--an all chrome, tech-decorated armor somewhat like the armor this Super Trooper wears. Captain Freedom didn't wear it long, as I recall--he didn't think much of the chrome, either!
    Depending on how long it took to design, the timing might be just about right...
    Fun video, as always!

    Should have made him a member of Star Brigade, he could have battled Lobotomaxx on a distant planet away from the rest of the Joe's. He had to be the beginning of what would follow in the 90s, although there are some good figures in the 90s line.

    The chest armor on mine is removable. It could be due to age and it does look like it was glued to his chest at one point, but I can't remember a time when I couldn't remove it, so I thought it was supposed to be like that especially since you can see the tiny little pegs and holes where the front piece fits together with the back.

    • @RogueTwo
      @RogueTwo 5 років тому +1

      It's only lightly glued to his chest and back. Someone at Hasbro apparently realized that it might be necessary to unscrew the figure to replace the o-ring. It's remarkably easy to dislodge the armor from the chest with no damage except some dried glue on the chest.

    I always thought of Super Trooper as a pretty boy douche bag Hawk parades around when The Jugglers want media exposure for G.I. Joe. Hawk can't send any of his "real Joes". Can you imagine Snake Eyes and or Outback doing The Today Show? That's why this guy exists. Give positive exposure to Joes while the real Joes get the dirty work done. Other Joes look at him as a joke.

    I have a hard time with these figures that didn't have appearances in other media. Like you were saying, they just don't feel like part of the team to me when I don't really get to see them in action. It also kind of sucks though cause I'm a more of a cartoon guy then a comic book fan, so that means there's kind a gap between the Sunbow and DIC era figures where there were some good figures, but they never feel connected to the rest of my figures to me.

    I use Super Trouper as a point man in urban warfare. The Joe's would smash in the door with Super Trouper, then Shock Wave, Beach Head, Law & Order, and then Scoop (or one of the intel team: Chuckles, Lady Jay, or Scarlett). After the action took place, Super Trouper would go out and talk to the news reports. Giving them some B.S. about a low budget movie being made. They were hoping to rap up production when things got out of hand.

    "Ok, GI Joe is pretty self-sustaining at this point, we are going to reassign the entire creative and development team to head other projects in their respected fields. Whom can we bring in to replace them? How about those guys that get us coffee and donuts every morning?"

I shrugged my shoulders and replied, "I guess he's the distraction. You want to send your troops in one way, you send him the other. The enemy spots him and starts shooting at him and leaves your troops alone." lol, that was the best excuse I could come up with back then.

    At 8:35 you say the cobra shield is not to dissimilar from super troopers..... except for the size, shape, and color, I guess your right.

    Just my opinion, but if i were to put Super Trooper in the comics or even a cartoon, I'd probably want to give him a clumsy goofball gimmick, were his antics end up getting him and the Joes in more trouble. Like Fackler from Police Academy, and he would be highly insecure which would explain the need for all the chrome.
    "Yeah.. well, Hawk calls me Super Trooper" lol
    great review, I would have loved to have had him back in the day, gijoes approach almost made you feel like you werent a true GIJoe fan unless you had the Super Trooper lol

    I think the cost was $1.25. Plus the 4 super trooper coupons.

    My idea for super trooper is that hes a guy only wearing the costume of a superhero in the gi joe universe, you know fiction within fiction type of thing

    I'd like to comment on super troopers last name Lattimer. In the G.I.Joe cartoon episode sink the Montana there was a character named Admiral George Lattimer. Could there be a connection?

    This figure was what I considered a Melvin back in the day. My definition of a Melvin is a character who didn't do much other than to be a plot point or background character - always the bridesmaid, never the bride. I also consider Fast-Draw, Sneak Peek, and sometimes Lightfoot to be Melvins too. For me this guy would go on his one-man dangerous mission and get captured, or get shot up and the Joe's would have to seek retribution. He'd be sidelined as either a turret gunner for the Desert Fox, OR his ultimate role in my play patterns was as an MP officer; I had seen the silver helmet in countless movies and even GI Joe episodes worn by MPs and this was the final depiction for his character- manning the Check Point Alpha or prison security with riot gear. Hey, he was already silver and check points need to be noticed and stand out. In my modern collection, I have cannibalized samples for parts of this figures head to make a Kwinn the Eskimo custom, which I do believe that I had shown to You HCC788 at Joecon this year. The body I used for GI JOE standard army builder recruits.

    My friends and I absolutely hated this figure. It didn't help that we were primarily Cobra fans, so Joes got a ribbing from us often, but Super Trooper got it the most. We called him "Stupid Trooper, Super Stupid, and Super Pooper." We were young. Give us a break! lol
