I was a Chemical Officer in the Army for 26 years. Airtight's bio is legit. I had the largest collection of plastic dinosaurs when I was a kid. The Chemical Corps is the Army place to find the people who were geeks as kids.
I loved Airtight, he could fit right in, especially underwater. That was when I had an imagination though. Looking back, he was probably the reason his team was constantly getting ambushed.
i think that one of the the things that makes gi joe the greatest toy line of all time is its broad range of characters/figures, featuring those who weren't "just" soldiers/sailors/marines, but had specialized skills beyond combat abilities that you could incorporate into your playtime in order to engage in a broad diversity of scenarios outside of just warfare. i think that Airtight is an example of a figure that was appealing for that reason, like others such as barbecue or dr mindbender.
He's a lot better than you're giving him credit for. He's an excellent figure with a variety of ways to play with him. Vehicle driver, diver, pilot, etc. Pretty close to top tier, if not solidly in the lower half of the top tier. I think he's really cool. And the fore grip fits in his hand just fine.
Airtight in my collection works with Tripwire, Tunnelrat and Lightfoot, disarming unexploded ordnance and in his case making sure it isn't poisonous. I always found it funny though, the Joes had a CBR soldier in 1982. Flash's laser rifle is technically a radiological weapon.
It's a great review, as usual. Since his secondary specialty is "ordinance" I would take that to mean he's qualified on arming vehicles (reloading ammo, mounting weapons, restocking missiles, etc) so between that and his toxic environment suit he makes a great support joe. He shows up after the battle is over for clean-up, seeing what munitions can be salvaged or needs to be destroyed as well as hazardous waste leaking from engines (remember, anti-freeze is toxic). It's not a glamorous role but a necessary one. I could see him with Crankcase or another mechanic and having to put together a vehicle like on the A-team to fight Cobra.
I figured the ordinance specialty was so he knew how to deal with IEDs that might be rigged to ordinance. They never featured him close to either way, though, so who knows?
Been a top fave since I first got him in 1985! I appreciated the special duties some figures had. Not every figure has to have the coolest weapons or uniform to lead the battle but they have to work with everyone else on the team in their designated roles.
Same here, I did not own Barbecue as kid( I did get him a few years later) but I loved that Hasbro included a military Firefighter as part of the line. It is a unique specialty, and I love the look of the figure. Plus his axe and fire extinguisher backpack are really fun accessories. I am really glad that in the modern era, Barbecue finally got some weapons to fight alongside his G.I. Joe teammates( his 2009 TRU excusive figure had an H&K MP5 sub-machine gun, a Benelli shotgun, and a rocket launcher).
Airtight was actually one of the few Joes I owned. I wish I had a lot more of them to be honest but I think as a kid I got more swept up with Transformers. Joe wise I had Airtight, Spearhead and Lady Jaye, and for Cobra I had a random Cobra Trooper, and the Baroness, along with some Action Force Red Shadows to help reinforce my Cobra troops.
I like the vid! Great job, man! I loved Airtight! Because I had the Bivouac, Airtight would deploy but stay at the Bivouac, monitoring comms, waiting for anything to happen. Serving in the Navy, especially on submarines, I now have a much greater appreciation for him. I now know his backpack more than likely had a vacuum pump and used mass spectrometry to identify the gases being sucked in. Different gases have different weights, hence the rifle intake system. His helmet would have to have some type of visual display as well. It would have been cool to see him using a Drager in the comics, fumbling with the glass tubes. My primary specialty was navigation and radio electronics, while my secondary specialty was atmosphere control. Nobody took their masks off until I said the air was clean enough to do so. Oh, I love the UHF audience scene. At least before Kramer took over the show!
Kudos to you 4 a review well done. A prankster you say. Well, that explains why he was collecting scorpions and placing them in a first aid can in his first appearance in Marvel G.I.Joe comics. He was setting up a good old fashion first-sting prank! Good one. Of course Destro and Dr. Brainwave... I mean Dr. Mindbender, weren't laughing when Airtight threw it at their windshield! It should have been bullet-proof!!! Always listen to an arms dealer!! Always liked that issue. Well, as always, keep up the great work you do for this channel!!!
Great review! Airtight was my first G.I. Joe figure. I like this figure. I think it would've been nice to have seen this figure with a removable helmet. I also think Airtight would've also been a great addition to the Eco-Warriors team.
Airtight is one of the most amazing and innovative characters/figures from the era, unfortunately not having a Cobra figure/vehicle equivalent to oppose made the figure to fade into oblivion. Great review!
Wow, the Sooner mindset was so different. We didn't have a problem finding a role for Airtight. Airtight was clearly a diver. Airtight s specialty was salvage missions.
I got into GI Joe when I was 4 years old, in 1987. I just missed the boat on the earlier figures, but I'd go to my cousins' house from time to time and I'd play with their toys when I visited, in the late 80s up to about 1991 or so. I remember a lot of the golden era Joes there, including Airtight. What I can remember is that the figure did not make a distinct impression on me. I just remember him being yellow and kind of boring. I'd play with Spirit, BBQ, Flint, any of the others. Airtight was just there. If his uniform had had some more detail, and a removable helmet, I might have been more drawn to that figure.
The sniffer went to a special place where a lot of backpacks and handheld devices go; in a pile that was utilized only when needed. Airtight was the resident scientist on the G.I. Joe team. He had the ear of Duke and Hawk in the realm of scientific theory as well as CBR. Airtight was also the co-pilot of the Vindicator and the secondary hovercraft.
Thanks for the Airtight review I got into the joes in 87 so I missed out on Airtight but had the bubble gum cards and always thought he was very Cool, Awesome figure/character
I understand your feeling towards target and those hoarders that get every new GI Joe action Cobra pursuit bums me out but I love watching your show brings me back to days long ago
"Tower, this is Banana Pants requesting a flyby" "Negative, Banana Pants. The pattern is full." He was a great pilot. Thanks for the video, Sir. Hope you guys have a wonderful Christmas.
What if it's a jungle full of bananas???? Airtight saves the day again. I like this NBC trooper a lot, when I was a kid he was a top tier Star Wars figure though
I LOVE Airtight! Because of him and Gung-Ho, I enlisted in the US Marine Corps after I graduated high school and took NBC as my MOS! Now it’s called CBRN or something. YO Joe!!!
one of my favorite figures as I have my first memory with him at about 3 years old it blew my mind I was 3 so I Was confused by the sniffer because I thought it was a gun that was broken-What I really remember is that backpack which makes for a great jet pack when you’re three years old
Although Airtight could fit in very well with the Eco Warriors?I'm glad they never put him in the series. He did get a figure based on the 2011 Renegades series and I have it somewhere.
Started watching your figure reviews around Thanksgiving, finished today! Now on to the vehicle and playset reviews! Love the channel keep up the great work.
Airtight is the only childhood Joe toy I can no longer find. I kind of used him to put out fires and stuff, and treated the 'weapon' he used as something like a fire extinguisher.
@@roguishpaladin He would have been... if I'd owned him! From the '85 Joes I didn't have Barbecue, Alpine or Dusty. Along with Cobra Commander, Storm Shadow and Zarana, they would be the figures I most wanted but never got (at least as a kid).
Never cared much for Airtight until I got my hands on the 30th anniversary Airtight. Wow! Such an awesome figure. The helmet is removable he includes both his basic gear of his 1985 version plus a new pack and a shotgun. You should also check out the episode of G.I. Joe Renegades The Anaconda Strain.
Airtight was the 3rd joe the i got as a gift back in the day, 1st two being a crimson guard and barbecue. The guard became my fav due to the fact that he was the only one with a gun. Use to imagine that they both had laser rifles but that downwards nozzle said otherwise
I was looking for G.I.JOE figures in U.S. Surplus shops in my part of the world. I found a Scoop figure. I thought Scoop was an unmasked Airtight. hehehe
I don’t mind airtight it was on of the first joes I got when I started collecting again great review I hope you and your family have a great holiday YoJoe!
I got a lot out of Airtight. There was a lot of support missions, & clean up missions. But some times he would go out with a group on a spy mission to check out to see if Cobra had made a new weapon system.
It's about time. I'm sorry he's not your favorite GI Joe, my friend but he's always been mine. I went through several of them even changing the arms out when the thumbs broke. His weapon was used as both a detector and neutralizer of hazardous material but if you were paying attention Airtight was not only smart but tough as hell. In his first appearance in the comics (issue #44 as you mentioned) he took charge and his teammates would have been lost without him. In the cartoon he took Dusty out with a single punch in the episode called "The Fun House" and the desert trooper was no slouch. Dusty kicked Shipwreck's but in the Traitor two part episode if you saw it. What I always liked about him is that he used his head before he resorted to violence defeating a Crimson Guardsman in the Germ with reason. However, it was always clear to me that when push came to shove he could dish it out as well as take it as good as if not better than most Joes. Airtight was in almost every one of my GI Joe missions as both a support and front line soldier. I never had any problems deciding where he'd fit in as he worked well with most of his fellow Joes. Thanks for the review and Happy Holidays.
Put some flippers on his feet and a harpoon gun in his hand and he'd make a good scuba diver. I didn't mind the figure's design, however, I'm a fan of guns and his lack of weapons was a deal breaker for me.

Airtight would hang out with snowjob back at the HQ until their specific talents were needed. “You two, guard the base until we get back.”
Along with Skidmark guarding Rip It as a prisoner
This looks like a go job for Snowjob!
'DON'T GOOGLE AIRTIGHT!!!' is still the thing that made me laugh the loudest from any of your videos, and there's been a few! :)
