im currently trying to do this. im trying to do it your way to avoid risk. exactly how do you turn the motor over from the flywheel bolt. im new to riding mowers by the way
The safer way to do this is to pop the plastic cap off of the very top and turn the engine with the flywheel nut using a socket or breaker bar. You do not even have to take the plastic shroud off of the engine. Removing the spark plugs helps once is starts moving because you are not fighting the engine's compression, and you can spray a little engine oil or other lubricant into the spark plug hole to help you free it up.
Thank you Eric, Cool name by the way :) Yes, this makes sense, and moving forward I will keep this in mind. I'm all about safety as well. Be safe and stay healthy. -Erick
vapor lock because of the fuel in the block. The Nikki6 carb's suck and will leak fuel through the carb and into the intake valve back into the engine block. You may want to check if the carb is still leaking. If the oil gets thinned out too much you will ruin the engine. Check the oil level, if it appears to be filled too much loosen the drain bolt and check if the oil looks too thin and smells like fuel.
Thank you for the insight. The Sears mechanic that replace the carburetor never mention the root cause of why the oil got mixed with the ⛽ gas. So a BIG TEXAS THANK YOU!
Thanks, you saved me $1500. I was ready to buy a new one and I decided to check UA-cam for ideas before I went out. After the third video with no luck, this was the one to help get it started again.
you can also turn it from the bottom of the main pulley. there is a screw in the shaft on the main pulley I think I used maybe a 15 or 16 mm socket with an extension to break mine lose.
If you put some oil in the spark plug hole that helps a lot too and then you can go forward and backwards you don't just have to turn it one way. Good job I have that same mower been through a lot and it still fires right up.
Most likely it was not seized up that bad, trust me ive seen seized engines that size lock up and they will put full force on the internal parts and it is full lock down and them things almost never come undone without getting the piston pressed out!
A hearty thanks for this video. Saved my life and the price of a new engine! In my case it was my tiller that locked up due to my not checking to see if I had oil in the engine. I filled the oil and turned it from the crank shaft. thanks again!
Yes, I just tried turning engine over with an impact on said nut. Come to find out o had a stuck exhaust valve. Was happy when I pulled the head and realized it was a pushrod motor. Spins pretty easy now, hope it has comepression!
I simply added the oil through the oil spout I normally use to add oil. Yes I should be more clearer, this was my first video I was a bit nervous. Thanks for watching.
You're welcome actually I still have that lawnmower today it still works I used it yesterday to work on my property it's been working fine ever since of course oil changes spark plug changes that kind of thing normal maintenance but it still run. Glad it helped
Chris Kolling if your engine squeaks like his, it won’t be long before you need to spend some money. You need to replace your bushings, piston rings and score your cylinders
stupid questions maybe, but I have the same engine, same problem. For clarity, when you say add oil to the motor, do you just mean into the regular oil fill or somewhere else?
I got an old weed eater leaf blower 2cycle an one time i put unmixed fuel by mistake it froze up , I then just let it completely cool down , poured out gas refilled with premix an slowly pulled starter rope to free piston. It became loose an was able to fire back up.
going to try this tomorrow..my 18.5 b&S just did this.. i heard it doing it the last time when i was on a ditch line. but once i leveled off the motor sounded normal.. then yesterday i was trying to beat out the storm and she locked up. praying this works hate to have to spend 500 on a new motor
yeah ours locked up after a week of rain and when having it looked at and looking at it ourselves the valves had been messed with before its last run and thatsbwhy it locked up, it spins now but needs a new header and new deck and belts and stuff and I just haven't felt like fixing it, just going to try to get a new one
Thanks, I was going to try your fix, but when I took the flywheel cover off I found that one of the starter bolts had come off and was wedged against the flywheel. I removed it and all is well now.
carburetor needle valve and seat sometimes lets gas leak into the oil in the crankcase. by removing the spark plug and see if engine cranks over then and gas shoots out of the spark plug hole..be sure to drain the oil and refill with new oil, install a fuel shut off valve and always yes always shut it off when mower is not in use.
I ran lawn mower without oil yesterday and locked up engine. Just tried what you did and it worked. Just tell thanks a lot. You just saved me from buying new lawn mower. Great video
Hello. I just change my transmission belt, but I played the lawnmower on its side. I struggled getting the belt off thinking I had to remove the flywheel smh. I never got the bolt loose cause the flywheel wouldn't lock. Looked at a different video, seen how to remove n replace belt without taking fly wheel off. I got the belt back on with no problem. Now the flywheel is locked. Is it because I played the lawnmower on its side now the oil is in the motor? I'm lost.
Hi Greg and in my case the gas got mixed up with the oil and I had to drain the oil and replace the carburetor. After the carburetor was replaced I added enough oil just to check if it would start, this was in the winter I waited a while before starting it up again without remembering I needed to add more oil the engine froze up after a few minutes. This video shows on alternative to help release the flywheel. I'm sure someone on UA-cam has an answer to your issue. Good luck.
@@edawg1960 Hey thanks. Not sure if ut was a video, or comment I read. But something said take the spark out. Took spark out and it was full of oil. The oil drain out, I turn the key with spark plug still out, and it turned, even cranked. So I cleaned the plug with a wire brush, put the plug back in, it cranked and now running with no problem. I think I flooded it laying it on the side to change belt. If I looked at a few videos 1st, like I normally do, that wouldn't have happened. But this guy video with mower on side was one of the 1st....SMH
Wow, Many thanks from here. This helped me too. Only thing I suggest is to add 4 ounces of marvel mystery oil. For better gear lubrication. Many thanks. Also, If you have trouble moving the crank shaft, Turn it backwards (Counter clockwise) And it'll help lubricate. I Turned it counter clockwise and cranked it, And it had enough force to move the cylinder without my assistance so it went back to life. Very happy. And thanks again.
You could have took off the screen on the flywheel and turned the motor over from the flywheel bolt, it would have been easier and not risky

Breaks and Scrapem!
Thanks for the advice. I did this and it helped start my riding mower up.

I know this is an old video, but isnt their a nut on top of the motor you can put a socket on?
Yes, I just tried turning engine over with an impact on said nut. Come to find out o had a stuck exhaust valve. Was happy when I pulled the head and realized it was a pushrod motor. Spins pretty easy now, hope it has comepression!
When you said you put oil inside the engine what do you mean?
I simply added the oil through the oil spout I normally use to add oil. Yes I should be more clearer, this was my first video I was a bit nervous. Thanks for watching.
Thank you, thank you thank you.👍👍👍

THANK YOU, you saved me from either having an engine block replacement ($$$) or a used riding mower ($$$$). Worked like a charm!!!
Chris Kolling if your engine squeaks like his, it won’t be long before you need to spend some money. You need to replace your bushings, piston rings and score your cylinders
Thank you so much!! Worked perfect!!
Your so welcome. Glad the video helped out. Thanks for watching.
stupid questions maybe, but I have the same engine, same problem. For clarity, when you say add oil to the motor, do you just mean into the regular oil fill or somewhere else?
Gary Rosenfeld into the oil fill. But if your engine seizes, it’s done it needs an overhaul
I had a similar problem, tried everything, then thanks to this video, I tilted the mower and got rid of all the oil, and bingo on first pull.
Way to go!! I'm gonna get rid of my oil before this happens to mine.
Thanks great info
Mine (frozed) up and can I use a different crow bar I don't have a Craftsman. I have oil in the oil thanks for the tips.
I got an old weed eater leaf blower 2cycle an one time i put unmixed fuel by mistake it froze up , I then just let it completely cool down , poured out gas refilled with premix an slowly pulled starter rope to free piston. It became loose an was able to fire back up.
Thank you. I am fixing a mower that sat outside for about 8 years in the snow and rain and this was a life saver. The engine now runs. Thank you
Same here I just got mine freed up
wish I knew what you did, because I need to do this to mine. Was the only trick pushing the wheel with that screwdriver/pryer you had?
i did this and it actually worked thx common sense dude. then i adjusted the valves and it runs like new again. 16.5hp i/c briggs
going to try this tomorrow..my 18.5 b&S just did this.. i heard it doing it the last time when i was on a ditch line. but once i leveled off the motor sounded normal.. then yesterday i was trying to beat out the storm and she locked up. praying this works hate to have to spend 500 on a new motor
What the hell? At 1:14 the sound shuts off so I have no clue what you did?
yeah ours locked up after a week of rain and when having it looked at and looking at it ourselves the valves had been messed with before its last run and thatsbwhy it locked up, it spins now but needs a new header and new deck and belts and stuff and I just haven't felt like fixing it, just going to try to get a new one
Same problem with my engine and was able to lose but it turned 3/4 of the way then it stopped again
Did you ever get it running with this method?
Thanks, I was going to try your fix, but when I took the flywheel cover off I found that one of the starter bolts had come off and was wedged against the flywheel. I removed it and all is well now.

Thank you for the detail explanation. The tech from Sears who replaced the carburetor also advise to remove the oil. Thanks.

What is the torch spec on head bolts for 19 horsepower mower?

Just what did you Do? Hello I'm sorry I didn't get it.
This doesn't work at all
Thank you so much you are a life saver!!!! God bless you!!!
great video....
Mine turned clockwise.
hallo vero c jack lol
This video saved me. Thank you!!
Your so welcome. I still use the lawnmower in the video today. Be safe and stay healthy.
are you sure that turns clock wise? it looks counter when it come to a stop.
Robert Corkern They do run clockwise

"frozed Up?"
Robert Quinting I knew some one would make this comment so I would have to. 👍🏻
