That one line is the perfect culmination of Mario's arc as a character within this universe. It was exemplified in the video, but nowadays with his old family (Toad, Woody, Shrek, Black Yoshi) mainly out of the picture, Mario's life is quiet and empty. Mario (And, to a lesser extent, Junior) are characters who only work when they have other characters and factors they can play off of and react to.The world happens to Mario, not the other way around. Without them, he's nothing. He's learned to accept and enjoy the company he gets because he doesn't know if they'll be around much longer.
You know what they should’ve done? Made this into an interactive game. Like choices like should Mario adopt Jeffy? Yes or no? Or should Mario call the police? Yes or no?
